Smart IoT project to digitally transform Aberdeenshire

Residents and visitors across Aberdeenshire are set to benefit from a new Internet of Things (IoT) project which can potentially transform the lives of those who live and work in the area.

The project will see Aberdeenshire Council trial six smart technologies in partnership with North, the UK’s leading IoT and solutions provider, as part of the company’s IoT Accelerator Pack Programme. The pilots will provide the council with access to real-time data insights on building health, social housing, water monitoring, waste management, air quality, and road surface temperature monitoring – allowing the council to make more informed decisions that will benefit the local communities.

The Accelerator Packs are being rolled out to 12 towns across Aberdeenshire, including Westhill, Ellon and Stonehaven, allowing the council to explore reductions across cost and energy consumption while improving operational efficiencies and reducing carbon footprint, in support of the council’s net zero commitments.

As part of the project, smart solutions will see five road temperature sensors installed across the region, increasing the council’s ability to make more informed decisions, such as when to dispatch gritters, and reducing emissions generated by extra trips, while smart waste management solutions will

2N achieves Secured by Design accreditation on intercoms and access unit readers

2N, a manufacturer of internet-enabled intercoms and access control systems, has announced that all of its intercoms and access unit readers have become Secured by Design (SBD) accredited.

SBD is the flagship UK police initiative to help ‘design out’ crime through the use of high-quality, innovative products and processes. To achieve SBD status, 2N’s intercoms and access unit readers (the 2N Access Unit 2.0 and the 2N Access Unit M), had to adhere to rigorous test standards required by the police, which assessed their resistance to forced entry. When installed along with the 2N Security Relay, all of these products now have the right to carry the SBD logo.

SBD standards have a tangible impact in terms of protecting against crime. In West Yorkshire, for example, research demonstrated that newly-built developments built to SBD standards were up to 75% less likely to be burgled. In Glasgow, a separate study concluded that refurbished developments employing SBD principles were up to 63% less likely to experience crime.

Michael Nicholson, 2N’s Business Development Manager for the UK & Ireland, said: “We are very proud that our intercoms and access unit readers are
