The benefi ts of radar protection

Traditional perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) can be effective but each technology can also have its downsides. Buried cables and fence detection systems can be relatively expensive to install and can suffer from false positives or false negative detections. Even camera based perimeter protection systems can suffer from adverse environmental conditions such as large bodies of water, snow, fog and heavy rain. In addition, some camera systems can be vulnerable to false alarms caused by small animals and swaying branches.

According to Dahua, combined radar and video intrusion detection systems, formally known as Radar Perimeter Protection Solution, overcome many of these problems. Radar (radio detection and ranging) uses radio waves to define the distance, angle and velocity of objects relative to it. It consists of a transmitter producing electromagnetic waves, and a receiver and processor. Radio waves from the transmitter reflect off an object and return to the receiver, providing information on the object’s location and speed.

Multi-dimensional protection

A Radar Perimeter Protection Solution provides a ‘multi-dimensional’ solution. The first ‘dimension’ is security radar, which is used to acquire targets in the monitored area. Once the object is detected, radar can track the target, obtaining data about its speed, heading and distance. The second ‘dimension’ is high resolution and intelligent video.

In essence, the radar detects a moving object while the camera provides video verification of the detection, so that control room operators can obtain a detailed picture of the object detected by tracking and zooming into the target. A third ‘dimension’ of thermal imaging can be added for certain application scenarios such as forest areas, lakes and rivers, and water reservoirs.

Types of system:

Radar only system: This is most suitable when detection of perimeter crossing only is needed, especially in applications with frequent perimeter crossings.

Radar with multiple PTZs: Multiple PTZ cameras can be used simultaneously in the monitored With the increasing number of perimeter protection monitoring related scenarios, more and more customers are no longer satisfi ed with simple video surveillance solutions. What they need is a more comprehensive, accurate, and intelligent global perimeter protection monitoring solution

area of the radar to carry out linkage tasks. The radar allocates the control of the camera according to the speed and distance of the target entering the monitored area.

Multiple radars with one PTZ: Three or four radars are integrated into a 360-degree area connected to one PTZ camera to realize whatever is detected, saving costs on multiple camera installations.

The Radar Perimeter Protection Solution is especially effective in monitoring large areas with multiple activities, such as waterways, critical national infrastructure sites, multiple lane road systems, and large high-end sites such as resorts and parks.

The addition of radar to video technology delivers a powerful detection and surveillance tool which is greater than the sum of its parts. Users of such systems will have the assurance that they have the best solution to protect their sites from unwanted intrusions and activities. Port upgrades CCTV to benefi t from deep learning analytics

Assan Port in Turkey was established in June 2010 as the first dedicated container terminal in the Gulf of Iskenderun and caters to international container shipping companies (general cargo ships, project cargo ships, and dry bulk carriers) with an annual established capacity of 250,000 TEU (Twenty Equipment Unit). Assan Port’s leadership is aiming to reach a capacity of 400,000 TEU with new investments. The Port’s security operations were hindered by an old CCTV system that wasn’t flexible or detailed enough for operators to fully understand what was happening on-site. The site security identified a need to improve security efficiency and situational awareness, to effectively protect the Port’s ships, equipment, shipyards, and containers. The system had to combat a range of threats including theft, vandalism and sabotage, trespassing, and terrorism. Hanwha Techwin technology was chosen for the project by Teknoteam Teknoloji Ürünleri. The entire existing system was replaced with Wisenet devices, including over 177 Wisenet Q Series cameras and three Wisenet X PTZ PLUS cameras. The team also invested in the 64-channel XRN6410DB4 NVR, which is equipped with a dual switched-mode power supply that ensures continuity of recording for mission-critical applications. Moreover, the NVRs are able to read AI metadata, enabling operators to quickly search video for objects and attributes associated to them.

The Wisenet X PTZ PLUS range enables users to capture evidence-grade images of activity occurring in large open area applications. This makes it ideal for monitoring the large Assan Port shipyard to capture images of objects up to a distance of 200 metres in all lighting conditions. The range also comes with an AI auto-tracking feature which allows control room operators to monitor the movement of objects whilst remaining hands-free to control other cameras. Operators can program a camera to lock onto and auto-track a specific object with the help of deep learning video analytics which detects and classifies people and vehicles. The video analytics is supported by AI algorithms unique to Hanwha Techwin.

“Thanks to Hanwha Techwin technology, the solution now in place provides a complete and accurate overview of Assan Port,” says Adnan Sanli of Teknoteam Teknoloji Ürünleri. “Using AI to automatically track objects and calling on deep learning to search for and classify objects helps keep this vital port secure - and the shipping that relies on it flowing efficiently.”

The Q Series cameras - of which 110 have been installed at the site - feature Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which performs at up to 120dB to produce clear images from scenes containing a challenging mix of bright and dark areas. The devices support PoE, which reduced the installation time. There is also the option to store video and data at the edge via an SD/ SDHC/SDXC memory slot, so if there is any disruption to the network, video evidence is not lost.

With the new Wisenet solution, security team members are able to monitor the shipyard and its assets 24/7 both on-site and remotely. They can also view live and recorded video via smart tablets — which enables them to continue monitoring the Port and investigate events while moving around the site.

The team plans to install Wisenet cameras across three different locations with all video footage and data being monitored from one central control room. Assan Port’s leadership team is looking for more efficient ways to increase its load capacity while maintaining the same level of service and without adding a significant headcount. The efficiency and scalability of the Wisenet system is supporting them in meeting this goal.

Adding extra padlocks to existing security system

The University of Galway needed an updated security solution to integrate into its existing locking system specifically a solution to integrate newer areas of the premises with padlocks and combine them with the existing security system. Having worked previously with local locksmith Collerans, university caretaken Tom Craven decided to reach out to see if they could help. He explains: “I wanted to add some padlocks around the university and add them to our current system of locks. I have a master key to give me full access to the different locks across the grounds and buildings, so I was looking to combine the padlocks with these existing locks so I could open everything with the one key.”

Mike Colleran, owner of Collerans Locksmiths says: “We chose the Burg-Wächter 116 Profi PC padlock which is really convenient to integrate into existing key systems due to the fact that it takes almost any Euro profile half cylinder from other manufactures.”

The 116 Profi PC is a solid brass padlock that can be fitted with half cylinders. Manufactured in Germany, this padlock has a stainless steel hardened shackle which is double-bolted for additional security. It also boasts a rustproof locking mechanism to offer long lasting reliability. Mike goes on to explain: “We rekeyed the Euro half cylinders to match the existing locks at the university before fitting them into the padlocks. Because the padlocks already come prepared for cylinder fitting, this made the job really easy and we were able to get the padlocks to Tom within a week.”

The padlocks were used on bollards and external access areas, with Tom saying: “90% of the Burg-Wächter padlocks are used externally and exposed to the harsh environment of the west coast of Ireland and perform extremely well. Once a year, they require a little squirt of oil but I have never had a problem.” Thanks to the serial number system, Collerans can quickly and easily make more padlocks in the future for Tom, should he require them.

Casino protects high-stakes poker tournament

The Merit Royal Hotel and Casino hosts the world’s largest roulette table (with a diameter of 20 metres), 950 of the latest slot and gambling machines, 63 live gaming tables and a number of luxurious VIP lounges.

To enhance security in preparation for the World Poker Tour’s Texas Hold’em poker tournament, as well as to ensure the safety of VIP guests, a video surveillance upgrade was required within weeks. The casino needed to have comprehensive coverage, not just to secure premises but to also protect against fraud and theft as well as to fulfil legal requirements set by local regulators.

Volga Elektronik was awarded the installation contract and deployed an end-to-end IDIS solution. To improve video coverage of gaming tables and the casino floor, Volga’s engineers installed IDIS 5MP dome cameras with motorised lenses, true WDR and IR up to 30 metres.

Seamless DirectIP plug-and-play connection of the cameras, 24 PoE switches with 64-channel network video recorders (NVRs), which come pre-installed with IDIS Solution Suite (ISS) VMS, meant cybersecure, yet rapid and hassle-free installation for Volga’s engineers.

ISS Expert provides control room staff with an easy-to-use VMS designed for mission-critical surveillance operations including administration, video wall monitoring, streaming, and recording services. The rich feature set allows operators to detect, verify, analyse, and rapidly respond to security and safety events and meet the requirements of regulatory gaming integrity.

Malik Oguz, Director of Security Systems at Merit Royal Hotel and Casino said: “Our security team can quickly and efficiently respond to incidents and resolve disputes to reduce table stoppages. The result is an enhanced patron’s experience that builds on our reputation as one of Europe’s top gaming destinations. The resort can now benefit from a truly scalable and futureproof solution, with the assurance of a low total cost of ownership.”

The Merit Royal already has plans to extend the system to cover hotel facilities and spacious outdoor areas, featuring two swimming pools, gardens, and a private beach.

MONITOR

Managing the switch to IP

The programme to migrate all of the UK’s phone lines and channels to All-IP is now in full swing with a deadline of completing the switchover by December 2025. Security installers need to act to ensure connectivity

The nationwide move to IP will affect not only voice calls but also lines of communication such as the link between alarm systems and the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). In most cases, in order for the panel to continue to be connected after switchover an installer will need to fit a device to the unit which, given the number of jobs this represents and the cost of fuel at the moment, is not going to be a simple and cost effective procedure. However there is another option.

Texecom Monitor provides a digital solution to the impending issue meaning that Texecom Premier Elite systems with SmartCom communicators can switch seamlessly and easily.

Following the launch of Texecom Monitor in April 2022 the system has been adopted by a host of alarm monitoring companies including SMC, Scutum Digital, EMCS, Fenix Monitoring, First County Monitoring and also Southern & Northern Monitoring. The company also recently announced that further ARCs have signed up with DSOC, RE:SURE, RMS, ASM, QVIS Monitoring and Corps Monitoring all becoming approved users of the technology.

Texecom Monitor offers SP2, SP2 Radio, DP2, DP3 and DP4 primary alarm signalling to leading Alarm Receiving Centres. The service is accessed from Premier Elite systems via dual-path SmartCom 4G communicators which provide connectivity to all the major UK telecommunication networks, including O2, EE, 3 (H3G) and Vodafone.

In essence Texecom Monitor makes adding primary alarm communications simple and easy. No messing about for installers in ordering bespoke equipment from ARCs for a particular, specific, site. No time-consuming wiring, programming and testing regime. No arduous ARC account setup process. Texecom Monitor is fully integrated with Premier Elite alarm systems making alarm signalling plug-and-play for the field alarm installer.

The nationwide move to IP will affect not only voice calls but also lines of communication such as the link between alarm systems and the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC)
