Magna Alert amplifiers available from QED have all the same features as a normal 100V line amplifier but with the added feature of an alarm input to trigger any MP3 file that has been downloaded to the amplifiers internal memory. The Alert series amplifiers are aimed at both retail and industrial applications.

Getting started

The product comes with a user manual that gives adequate guidance on: • The safety of the product • Front and Rear description of input connections, relays and outputs • Wiring diagrams for multiple types of speakers connected to the unit • Unit operation • Connection diagrams • Alarm triggering to activate the pre-recorded message that can be attached to the device.

One thing should be noted; little additional information is available for this product online, only copies of the provided user manual from resellers.

If the unit is to be used as a simple AV amplifier, connected to FM radio and used to make announcements, then following the user manual will provide a simple plug and play setup. However this system can also be connected to third party systems to provide alert/alarm triggering in the event of the onboard contacts being shorted. If this is to be done, the user will require to set up priority using the dipswitches so that the amplifier knows to silence the other connected channels.

Performance

This compact public address unit provides a powerful 60w output and can be configured for multiple different speaker types dependant on its use.

The sound quality of the unit is great, even when pushing a pre-recorded message. This was tested with connection to CCTV, intruder and fire alarm systems to test the response of the alarm triggering.

The build quality of the unit is great, a very sturdy and well put together piece of equipment. All the connections and dials on the unit are reliable and able to take abuse, which is great if this unit is to be used as part of a busy integrated system.

Conclusion

This unit would be suited for a typical office environment where a simple AV solution would be required. But this device provides an “all-inone” PA solution when connected to 3rd party security systems. This would make a great addition to: • An external intrusion system to trigger an alert and an announcement over external PA system in the event of detection • CCTV systems allowing for an operator to communicate with site over the wired or wireless MIC inputs • Disabled WC alarms providing audible announcement in the event an alarm is triggered, requesting attendance from staff.

Please be aware that this should only be used for supplementary use, and should not be connected to a fire alarm system to provide a means of raising the alarm.
