FIRE Conference to take place in October in London

The FIRE Conference returns in 2023 taking place on Tuesday 17 October at The Institution of Engineering and Technology in London. This year’s instalment will address sustainability, new legislation and leading the future of fire safety in a time of unprecedented change.

Organised by the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE), the Fire Protection Association (FPA), the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and the Fire Sector Federation (FSF), the event will provide key updates and drive momentum in evolving best practices, plus the one-day event will offer seminars and workshops delivered by industry experts.

The hybrid event will address the new scope of meeting building safety expectations, the future of certification, and keeping pace with new legislative change and sustainable developments. It will also provide an update on the progress of the national fire strategy white paper, produced by the Fire Sector Federation Fire Strategy Board and launched at FIRE 2022, which seeks a framework to effectively manage fire risk to help achieve a sustainable and safer society.

This year’s conference will be chaired by Broadcaster, Sima Kotecha. Commenting on FIRE Conference 2023, Sima said: “Events like this are pivotal to professionals working in fire and showcases developments and a hopeful future in the sector. This year’s format will focus on the future and key developments from the four leading organisations in fire safety; I’m really looking forward to being part of these conversations.”

Delegates will hear from conference leaders and each party will provide an update on developments in place to ensure a future safer from fire.

Secure Logiq and BriefCam in new partnership

Secure Logiq and BriefCam have announced a new technology partnership to combine the benefits of BriefCam’s video analytics solutions with Secure Logiq’s servers specifically designed for HD surveillance applications to create a security solution that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Paxton’s test facility is renamed as Brighton EMC

Brighton EMC is the new brand for what was called The Paxton Test Facility, which provides UKAS accredited EMC testing services to electronic product manufacturers.

Brett Glass, Compliance Manager at Brighton EMC, said: “Rebranding to Brighton EMC gives us greater visibility and recognition as an independent UKAS accredited test facility, providing reliable EMC testing services to manufacturers.”

Brighton EMC is located in Paxton’s Technology Centre in Brighton. In addition to EMC testing, the company has Environmental Chambers to test the impact to products from environmental factors, and equipment to carry out Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), surge, transients, and power quality tests.

New fire and security apprenticeship for Wales

The Fire and Security Association (FSA) and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) have welcomed Welsh Government’s approval of a new Apprenticeship Pathway in Fire and Security.

This completes the mission of the fire, emergency and security systems (FESS) sector to make a specialist apprenticeship available to employers and learners in every part of the UK.

Tom Brookes, FSA Chair, said: “The new apprenticeship in fire and security marks an important step forward for FESS standards in Wales. As such, it represents a fantastic achievement for the close and effective partnership on competence and skills now developing between Welsh Government and industry employers. We look forward to seeing this partnership continue to grow and strengthen further over time.”

Trevor Jenks, SSAIB National Training Manager, said: “SSAIB are delighted to have been involved in the development of the new Welsh Apprenticeship Pathway, which both aligns with the UK-wide FESS Technician Standard and respects Wales’s specific training identity and norms.”

Development of this apprenticeship, which was jointly funded by FSA and SSAIB, has come as a direct response to employer demand in Wales. Employers were also closely involved in the steering group which oversaw the development process.

Welsh apprentices and employers will benefit from the curriculum aligned with UK-wide technical and occupational competence standards. The apprenticeship features two qualifications which have now been designated by Qualifications Wales: the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems, and the EAL Level 3 Knowledge Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems. On completion, individuals will achieve UK FESS Technician status and entitlement to apply for a gold card under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS).

Significantly, the establishment of this new benchmark also provides a route for the existing workforce in Wales to upskill from Operative to gold card Technician level when the FESS Experience Worker Assessment route becomes widely available later this year across the whole UK.

Wales’s Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething said: “This new apprenticeship will raise standards across the fire, emergency and security systems industry and make a significant contribution to the competence and skills of the workforce in Wales. The fact the apprenticeship was jointly developed across the sector is testament to the value and strength of collaborative working in meeting industry needs.”
