Dear Friends, THANK YOU for your support of the Pro Bono Partnership mission and for joining us for our first virtual gala! When we settled on our gala theme at the end of last year, we didn’t imagine the additional relevance “Envision, Empower, Impact” would take on in this most unusual year. For 23 years, the Partnership has worked to ENVISION and make reality a world where nonprofits have the legal resources they need, free of charge, to operate with maximum efficiency. This year many nonprofits have stretched capacity to the limit in an effort to serve unprecedented need in our communities. The Partnership provides a reliable and trusted legal resource to turn to amid all the uncertainty, serving to strengthen and EMPOWER nonprofits to respond and adapt quickly to meet growing need. Because of our collective efforts, more than 900 nonprofits are able to positively IMPACT thousands of individuals throughout the tristate each year. Those organizations shape our neighborhoods and change thousands of lives—all as a result of the educational resources and sound legal advice they receive as Pro Bono Partnership clients. You can learn more about how clients rely on the Partnership in the Volunteers of the Year section of this program, or by visiting probonopartner.org. The impact this year’s honorees have had on the legal community, and on society as a whole, is truly remarkable. We are proud to call Martin Lipton, Founding Partner of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and the Bristol Myers Squibb Law Department our 2020 Pro Bono Champions. We look forward to celebrating with you, and to sharing examples of our mission at work for the legal and nonprofit communities on the pages that follow and in tonight’s event. With appreciation,

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Each and every one of our 1,400 volunteers is integral to the Pro Bono Partnership mission, and our 900+ nonprofit clients would agree that each has provided expert counsel to their organizations at critical junctures. That’s what makes selecting our regional Volunteers of the Year so difficult. This year we are proud to recognize 10 outstanding volunteers who have gone above and beyond to help our nonprofit clients serve more constituents, enhance programming, and make our neighborhoods better places to live and work. Their work has made our nonprofit community stronger, more resilient, and more sustainable. Each year the VOTY awards are a great source of hope and inspiration, and during this time of unimaginable challenges, we need that message more than ever. Please join us in thanking and celebrating our VOTY honorees!
Lauren R. Fishman, Esq. Pro Bono Manager
Rachel Sachs Pro Bono Coordinator
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR VOTY SPONSORS
CONNECTICUT VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Daniel Cooper
Daniel Cooper, an Intellectual Property attorney at Cooper and Kurz, has been a committed Pro Bono Partnership volunteer since 2016. In four years, Dan has become one of our go-to IP attorneys, having assisted 13 nonprofit clients with 16 matters. One of those clients is Forge City Works, Inc., a nonprofit that helps people change their lives through their sustainable social enterprises, job training, and food access. The organization wanted to change their name and do some rebranding, and they needed an IP attorney who could help along the way. Dan enthusiastically volunteered, and ended up helping Forge City Works research and protect their new identity. Asked about his pro bono work, Dan said, “Through my work with PBP, I hope I can be even a small help to organizations that already do so much in our community.” We appreciate Dan’s outstanding contributions to the nonprofit community!
CONNECTICUT VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP
Morgan Lewis has been instrumental in assisting Pro Bono Partnership clients throughout our service area, and especially the greater Hartford region, since 2006. In that time, 151 Morgan Lewis attorneys assisted with 236 matters for 164 clients! When New Haven-based nonprofit Schooner, Inc. faced financial difficulties and needed to wind down operations, a team of Morgan Lewis attorneys led the successful transfer of its program and assets to New Haven Land Trust so the mission of Schooner, environmental literacy and character development through education and access to Long Island Sound and its watershed, could continue to serve the community. Kyle Pedersen, Treasurer, New Haven Land Trust (formerly, President of Schooner, Inc.) was thankful to the Morgan Lewis team for “being incredibly responsive throughout the entire process… and allowing the time needed to make very serious decisions.” We are grateful for Morgan Lewis’ dedication to the Partnership and for the work they do to strengthen our communities!
NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Robert A. Farber
Robert A. Farber, Director of Contracts and Counsel for Sea Box, Inc., a manufacturer of shipping containers and containerized modular solutions, has been using his contracting expertise to assist Pro Bono Partnership clients for almost a decade. Robert has assisted many nonprofit clients over the years, including most recently University NOW Day Nursery (UNOW), a nonprofit on the campus of Princeton University that provides a joyful, play-based learning experience that nurtures all aspects of a child’s development. By skillfully navigating a novel contracts issue for UNOW, Robert helped the organization respond to the new reality presented by COVID-19 and, more importantly, gave UNOW time to focus on its mission. New Jersey Program Director, Christine Michelle Duffy noted that Robert isn’t afraid to tackle complex contractual problems that seem intractable and find and negotiate solutions that help preserve the limited financial resources of our nonprofit clients.

NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Gary A. Laurie
Gary Laurie, a solo practitioner who focuses on entertainment and arts law, intellectual property licensing, and general business and contract law, began volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership in 2017. Since then, Gary has volunteered on 17 matters ranging from copyright protection and website reviews to drafting social media policies. Gary enjoys working with nonprofits “because they provide a valuable educational, artistic, and social resource that the government and private sector do not, and thus create immeasurable value for our society.” One of those appreciative nonprofits is Ladies of Hip Hop Festival that just recently received its trademark approval thanks to Gary’s work! PBP Senior Staff Attorney, Kent Hansen noted, “Gary’s expertise in a number of practice areas has been a great benefit to many of our clients. In addition to his legal skills, Gary brings a warm and enthusiastic personal approach to his work with clients.” Gary’s work has made a difference to so many, and we are thankful!
NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR John G. Webb III
John Webb is an experienced general counsel and transactional business lawyer with a track record of consistent and reliable volunteering for the Pro Bono Partnership New Jersey program. John has worked on an impressive 47 legal matters, most often helping nonprofits with a review of their bylaws, a critical albeit time consuming process. In 2018, John assisted Shore House with a review of their bylaws and conflicts of interest policy to help further their mission to restore hope, independence, and self-worth for people living with a mental illness by providing access to social, educational, and employment opportunities. John described his work for Shore House as “professionally satisfying” and also noted “it is an honor to use my legal training and experience to play a small part in enabling our clients’ good work.” It is our great honor to recognize John for his many years of hard work helping nonprofits build capacity.
NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Audible Legal
Audible has a deep commitment to volunteerism and to the renaissance of the City of Newark, and so does its legal department. In 2019, nine Audible lawyers provided free legal assistance to twelve New Jersey nonprofits with thirty-eight legal matters. Newark-based Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District was a beneficiary, and the organization’s Executive Director, Anthony Smith, credits Audible Legal with being “nothing short of amazing” on numerous projects as the nonprofit works to build a comprehensive arts and cultural program in the city. The Audible legal team has assisted with drafting and reviewing contracts, corporate governance, employment law, fundraising compliance, and trademark applications. The Audible Legal pro bono program is led by Stas Zakharenko and Catherine Thompson, who both volunteer on projects with the Partnership. We are grateful for their dedication and thrilled to recognize the team’s commitment to empowering nonprofits and enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
NEW YORK & FAIRFIELD COUNTY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR James P. Greifzu
James Greifzu, a partner in the Stamford, CT office of Wiggin and Dana LLP, has been a tremendous asset to Partnership clients with complex corporate legal issues such as mergers and dissolutions. Last year James assisted Arts for Healing, a Fairfield County nonprofit that provides therapy in the form of creative arts to children and adults with special needs, with a merger negotiation. “This merger could not have happened as well as it did if it wasn’t for James and [his associate’s] expertise in handling negotiations and their extensive knowledge of the merger process,” said Karen Nisenson, Clinical Director of Arts for Healing. While James’ work with the Partnership allows him to help nonprofits in the community, it also provides “a unique and invaluable way to teach junior attorneys and give them exposure to the same types of issues and challenges in for-profit transactions.” We are grateful for James’ dedication to pro bono work.
NEW YORK & FAIRFIELD COUNTY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Elissa D. Hecker
Elissa Hecker, a Westchester-based solo practitioner, is one of Pro Bono Partnership’s most prolific volunteers. Since 2014 Elissa has worked on nearly 30 matters, lending her expertise on issues ranging from trademark protection to website reviews. Like many of our volunteers, Elissa appreciates that the Partnership brings vetted, discrete transactional pro bono opportunities directly to her inbox, and she “looks forward to the emails [from PBP] detailing what wonderful organizations need assistance.” One such organization, Soul Ryeders, a Westchester nonprofit committed to empowering community members affected by cancer, has benefitted from Elissa’s expertise on numerous occasions. Elissa and the Soul Ryeders staff have developed a wonderful relationship over the years, which is one of the reasons Elissa enjoys her work with Partnership so much. Elissa explains, “the nonprofits I’ve worked with are so appreciative, the work is really gratifying, and often long-term relationships are created... The fact that I’m indirectly helping hundreds or even thousands of people served by my nonprofit clients feeds my soul.”
NEW YORK & FAIRFIELD COUNTY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Joel Wolfson
Joel Wolfson, Director and Associate General Counsel at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, works on commercial, contractual, and intellectual property matters for the broker-dealer unit. He began volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership in 2018 and quickly became the go-to volunteer for amending Certificates of Incorporation. Typically an intricate process, Joel embraced this volunteer specialty, noting that by “concentrating on and mastering this one process, and coming to know the personalities and preferences of the officials involved I can quickly and repeatedly provide services to many nonprofits, without having to spend a lot of time learning all aspects of New York nonprofit law.” Joel’s choice of matters enables him to form strong connections with all of the nonprofits he assists, including The Matthew Wallace Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to engaging and inspiring community leaders (particularly students and young adults) and providing goods and services in underserved communities. The Partnership is grateful for Joel’s commitment to the Partnership and our clients.
NEW YORK & FAIRFIELD COUNTY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR Winston & Strawn LLP
For the past 18 years, Winston & Strawn has been one of Pro Bono Partnership’s most ardent supporters. Winston & Strawn volunteers have offered their expertise to the Partnership’s clients seeking advice on a wide array of subject matters. Whether real estate, corporate, employment, or tax law matters, the firm’s commitment to pro bono work and to helping the nonprofit community is unwavering. In one recent project, capital markets partner Elliott Smith and associate Stephanie Parker reviewed the bylaws and conflicts of interest policy for New York Therapy Animals. Executive Director Nancy George-Michalson described their assistance as “wonderful for our organization,” and allowed them to focus on their mission of providing animal therapy resources to those that may not otherwise have access. Pro Bono Partnership truly appreciates the 89 Winston & Strawn lawyers who have generously donated their time and expertise to our nonprofit clients, and all of those at the firm who supported their efforts.
