Dear Como Friends supporters, Como Park Zoo and Conservatory has counted on a long list of champions over the last century, from Horace Cleveland, to Sparky the Sea Lion (numbers I through VI…), to the more than 1,380 individuals who volunteered at Como this year. Every voice committed to Como has helped strengthen this legacy, but one visionary who deserves special notice this year is our friend Leonard Wilkening, who died in January 2013 at the age of 87. Leonard assembled the board and staff that first incorporated Como Friends. As our founding board chair, he was hard-headed about ethics and sound fiscal policy, and soft-hearted about Como’s capacity to build community and widen horizons for people from every walk of life. A great promoter of public and private partnerships, Leonard believed that communities are stronger when public dollars are met by private supporters willing to put their voices and resources behind the organizations that matter most. Leonard was proud of Como Friends’ progress over the last decade, investing more than $35 million in projects like Tropical Wilkening Encounters and Polar Bear Odyssey while keeping Como free of was a fierce charge for the two million visitors who come to Como each year. At Como Friends, we were proud to see Leonard’s legacy champion carried on this spring with the unveiling of two long-awaited in our first improvements that proved the power of the public/private decade. partnership he envisioned for Como. In April, the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory invited visitors to The Ordway Gardens, a beautiful new wing dedicated to Como’s first-class Japanese botanical collection. In June, Como Zoo pulled the curtain on Gorilla Forest, a progressive new habitat for an expanded troop of western lowland gorillas. The first was funded by private contributions, the second by the citizens of the state of Minnesota, but neither improvement would have been possible without the commitment of generous corporations, foundations, and individuals like you. Your continued support makes a powerful case for Como every day. At Como Friends, we feel so fortunate to have had the support of a fierce champion like Leonard Wilkening in our first decade, and to enjoy the continued confidence of the volunteers, sponsors, members and donors listed in the following pages, who helped to keep Como growing strong in 2013.

Thank you for all you do for Como!

THE Ordway A family legacy and private contributions created a long-awaited addition to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory

OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, painstaking training

“The Ordway Gardens are a perfect example of what private contributions make possible,” says Como Friends board member Greg McNeely, seen here with Phil Ordway and John “Smokey” Ordway, Jr. In April, a crowd of Como Friends supporters came to the freezing cold ribbon-cutting ceremony for this $2.8 million wing to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. and tender care have turned the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory’s array of Bonsai into one of the nation’s premier collections—and one of Como’s best-kept secrets. With limited display space for these delicate trees—some more than a century old—many of Como’s most valued potted trees were confined behind the scenes, on growing benches in the Conservatory’s greenhouse. All of that changed in April, when Como unveiled The Ordway Gardens, a new wing to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory that combines year-round display space for Bonsai with an inviting new path into the Charlotte Partridge Ordway Japanese Garden, creating a harmonious connection between these two treasures of Como’s horticultural collection. “The Ordway Gardens are a wonderful addition to the Japanese Garden and the Conservatory,” says Marla Ordway, a Como Friends board member, who adds that the Japanese Garden has had special interest to the Ordway family. Charlotte’s daughters first proposed a Japanese garden at Como in the early 1970s to honor their mother’s strong interest in gardening. A family gift in 1978 established the Japanese garden as a living memorial to Charlotte Partridge Ordway. Thirty-two years later, Charlotte’s son, John “Smokey” Ordway, Jr., carried the family’s commitment to Como forward, providing the lead gift to ensure the creation of the Bonsai Terrace and pedestrian path that invites visitors to see this historic garden in a new way.

“Watching the Japanese Garden develop from an unnoticed corner of Como to a nationally ranked garden has been a thrilling experience for the Ordway family,” Marla Ordway says. “We’re excited at the way The Ordway Gardens wing will encourage visitors to rediscover the outdoor garden, and learn more about Japanese culture along the way.” The economic recession forced Como to postpone construction of the new wing for two full years while the volunteer committees of the Campaign for Como worked to secure the full $2.8 million in constructions costs from private donors. One benefit of the extended timeline was the chance it gave Como’s horticultural staff to “remodel” the Japanese Garden to reflect the original vision of Masami Matsuda, the renowned landscape designer chosen by Nagasaki, Japan to create the garden for its sister city of St. Paul. Community support for The Ordway Gardens was so enthusiastic that not even a surprise April snow storm and freezing temperatures could keep Como Friends members and donors away from ribbon-cutting previews in April. “The Ordway Gardens wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment of thousands of people who want Como to be the world-class destination our community deserves,” says Como Friends board member Greg McNeely. “The Ordway Gardens are a perfect example of what private contributions make possible at Como every day. People really care about Como”

Gorilla Forest

Como Zoo’s newest habitat expands the perspective for primates and people

visitors to Como Zoo’s new Gorilla Forest noticed when it opened in June was the striking new view. Instead of visitors gazing down on the gorillas, Como’s seven western lowland gorillas now observe families and field trip groups from a grassy, elevated pitch. “It’s a small shift, but from the perspective of the gorillas it’s a huge improvement,” says senior zookeeper Jo Kelly, who says the discomfort of “being looked down on” is just one of the traits humans and great apes share. “The new design puts them more at ease, which is why visitors have had such a great glimpse of the gorillas’ natural behaviors since they moved in.” Giving Como Zoo’s gorillas the great care they deserve was a passion for Arlene Scheunemann, a long-time Como Friends board member and volunteer who died in 2013 just before the exhibit opened. A former Zoo Docent, Scheunemann helped lift Como Zoo’s profile as a leader in primate care by successfully hand-raising two gorilla infants and ten orangutans in her family’s St. Paul home in the days before Como had the facilities to care for zoo babies. “Arlene was a tremendous advocate for Como, and one of so many volunteers and supporters who helped make the case for improving primate care,” says Jackie Sticha, President of Como Friends. “Strong community support from people like her was critical to convincing lawmakers to invest in the $11 million expansion.” Gorilla Forest is the largest mesh-enclosed primate exhibit in North America, and includes a working waterfall, natural substrate, and a sky-light filled day room where gorillas can soak up vitamin D, even during the winter. The state-of-the-art facilities make it possible for Como Zoo, a long-time partner to the Gorilla Species Survival Plan program, to care for two gorilla groupings—a breeding troop of three females led by Schroeder, a 500-plus pound silverback, and a boisterous trio of related bachelors, all of them 14 years old. “It’s wonderful to have an exhibit that finally reflects the great care that goes on behind-the-scenes at Como Zoo every day,” says Sticha. “Gorilla Forest has definitely improved the experience for primates on both sides of the exhibit.” ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS

Como Zoo docents like Arlene Scheunemann were early advocates for the improved primate care now possible in Gorilla Forest, an $11 million expansion for Como’s troop of western lowland gorillas.

Growing Stronger...

THE HEART OF COMO:

Preserving Como’s deep roots in our community while supporting progressive improvements and education programs has been the vision behind Como Friends for more than a decade. Here’s a look at how your contributions and commitments helped Como grow in 2013. CAMP COMO:

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE:

In 2013, Como saw a 27 percent surge in summer camp enrollment, with fun new programs for kids from preschool to eighth grade. Contributions to Como Friends help underwrite the cost of these week-long, budget-friendly programs, while providing scholarships to low-income kids.

10

From greeting visitors to potting plants to feeding amphibians, Como’s volunteers make a difference every day. Como’s volunteer services organization grew stronger in 2013, thanks to 186 “fresh recruits” who joined more than a thousand already active volunteers.

Making smart use of our resources is second nature at Como Friends, where your support for the Como Shuttle Service kept an estimated 22 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere in 2013. Contributions to the Chipotle Edible Garden also helped grow more than 1,786 pound of produce used to feed animals at Como Zoo, and teach St. Paul rec center students about healthy cooking and nutrition.

Open Door Policy:

Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is open every day, and welcomed nearly 2 million visitors in 2013. Your support for Como groups from more than 60 Minnesota counties, continuing Como’s long-standing tradition as the state’s most visited cultural institution.

When Como Friends members failed to eat their as at the opening preview of Gorilla Forest, we passed more than 900 bananas to Como Zoo’s seven western lowland gorillas.

Como Friends counted on more than 340 costumed volunteers to create fright-free fun for more than 15,000 trick-or-treaters.

Partnerships create value for Como’s two million visitors and greater visibility for the corporations and businesses that provided cash and in-kind contributions to Como Friends in 2013. Growing partnerships stirred up everything from guacamole-making demonstrations in the Chipotle Edible Garden to year-long conservation education activities sponsored by Xcel Energy. Partners even helped fill goodie bags at ZooBoo by donating more than 200,000 toys and healthy treats. CORPORATE CONTRIBUTIONS:

Growing Stronger...

GREAT MIGRATIONS: A Legacy for Learning: Education funding secured by Como Friends helped carry on the popular early childhood program “Lil Explorers” long after the original seed funding provided by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment. The weekly early childhood program has proven to be a of entry to a host of conservation programs that now reach more than 500,000 children and adults every year.

82% POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT:

How do you get a gorilla to cooperate with his own health care? “Very carefully” is the takehome lesson more than 30,000 Como Zoo visitors got in 2013 thanks to a new daily training program that brings the behindthe-scenes connections Como Zoo keepers make with great apes front and center where visitors can see it. Your contributions to Como Friends have helped fuel this progressive approach to animal care, with an operant conditioning training program that uses positive reinforcement to reduce animal stress and improve care for dozens of species, from Galapagos tortoises to reticulated giraffes.

Como Friends launched a conservation travel program in 2013 that took 16 intrepid Como Friends adventurers to Churchill, Manitoba in November to see the polar bears make their annual return to the sea ice of the Hudson Bay. “Seeing an animal like that in the wild really makes you want to be part of their preservation,” says Arta Cheney, a Como Friends board member who joined the tour, created in partnership with our friends at Schulke Travel, Frontiers North Adventures, and Polar Bears International. Proceeds helped to support Como Zoo’s own polar bear twins, Buzz and Neil, along with high priority projects across the campus.

SNEAK PEEKS:

Como Friends members turned out in force for several preview events that invited our biggest fans The Ordway Gardens and Gorilla Forest. Sparky the Sea Lion also tried out some splashy new moves in several early morning shows performed exclusively for her Como Friends.

Growing Stronger...

Back from the brink:

Como Zoo keeper Bree Barney takes care of 30 adult Wyoming toads in a bio-secure room behind-thescenes at Como—just one of the many conservation efforts your support helps make possible. Though the Wyoming toad was once believed to be extinct in the wild, this critically endangered amphibian may bounce back thanks to an aggressive species breeding project Como Zoo has been part of for the past three years. In July, Barney shipped the latest generation of toads bred at Como Zoo by FedEx to Wyoming, and traveled to repatriate them to their native habitat in the Laramie Basin. “Thanks to the support provided through Como Friends, I have been able to grow professionally through course work and hands on experiences I may have never gotten the opportunity to do otherwise,” says Barney. “We need to make sure these little

Live music made a return to Como in 2013 with “Music Under Glass” and “Groovin’ in the Garden,” two free concert series funded by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment. 14

CONSERVATION AND CONVERSATION: Your contributions to Como Friends help build great partnerships like “ZooSkillz,” a class that helps kids with autism spectrum disorders make new friends while connecting the dots between animals, plants and people. “I would tell other school groups that if you’ve got an idea you think could work, bring it to Como,” says Nora Slawik, Director of Education and Training at the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM). “They’re really the gold standard when it comes to being educational partners.”

Record-setting Sunset Affair: “Urban Jungle” was the theme of Como Friends’ 2013 Travelers Sunset Affair—another sell-out thanks to long-time supporters who’ve made the fundraising gala one of the summer’s hottest tickets. Guests at the 12th annual Travelers Sunset Affair event set a new record for fund-a-need contributions, helping Como Friends raise a total of $140,000 for high-priority projects at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory and Como Zoo. Making the Case for Como: Como welcomes nearly 2 million visitors for less than $4 per person—a great return on investment for our community. In fact, the $9 million of public funding invested in Polar Bear Odyssey has had more than $50 million in economic impact in our region. In 2013, Como Friends advocates shared the impact of Como’s cost effective programs with state lawmakers, who voted to increase Como’s Legacy Amendment funding by more than $600,000 over the next biennium. The funding infusion will expand the reach of education programs and provide other improvements over the next two years. 15
