PHCS

To be, or not to be?

THATcertainly was the ‘burning’ question of the evening on 7th July, when members of Probus Historic Cornwall Society (PHCS) joined Redruth Old Cornwall Society to celebrate a postponed Tansys Golowan (Midsummer Eve).

Probus

Defibrillator

Campaign update

ASof Wednesday 23rd August, following very generous donations from Roseland Kennels & Cattery, Probus Parish Players, A&H Duct Cleaning Services Ltd and an anonymous donor, we have raised £3,642 (and still counting!), so that puts us very close to our target.

Probus Parish Council has agreed to fund the difference, and that means we will be able to purchase all three new defibrillators (and associated cabinets) for the village.

Thanks to every who has supported this campaign — it’s been a truly fantastic community effort. Watch out for a further update once they arrive and are installed and available for use.

The event was due to take place on 23rd June, the Celtic Midsummer’s Eve, now referred to as gol-Jowan or St John’s Eve but, on the advice of the Fire Brigade, was postponed. The prolonged spell of very dry weather had made the lighting of the bonfire too dangerous. Unfortunately, the situation on 7th July was not much better and the organisers very sensibly decided that it was ‘not to be’. A very small fire was lit so that the traditional burning of the herbs could take place, but it was immediately extinguished.

Despite the lack of the usual inferno, the evening was a great success and all enjoyed their pasties, chatting and listening to the hurdy-gurdy man.

Probus Comrades Club

WEDNESDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2023 AT 7:45 PM

Everyone welcome - come along and find out about your village magazine.

Are you curious, or perhaps interested in getting involved in the production or delivery of the magazine? We are always looking for help with interviewing, reporting/story gathering, editing, layout and graphic design. If you have skills we could use, or are interested in learning new skills, then we can help. The AGM is an opportunity to meet with the committee, without obligation, to find out what we do. You’ll find us welcoming, open for new ideas and very keen to get younger age groups involved - vital for protecting the long-term future of our village magazine.

From Fun Week HQ

WEare now two weeks after the final events of Probus Fun Week, and boy what a week it was!

When the committee was first formed, we had one objective and that was to put on a week of events that would bring the whole community together. Overall, we felt everyone came together and did a fantastic job and we achieved what we set out to achieve. However it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the whole village so with that we want to thank you wholeheartedly.

You will be pleased to know that the wheels are already in motion for Probus Fun Week 2024, so hold the dates of 11th-17th August 2024 and add them to your calendar’s now.

The bright and colourful bunting strung

along stretches of Fore Street during Probus Fun Week looked wonderful! For next years fun week, we need even more bunting, in fact, enough to stretch the entire length of the village. To do that we need a lot of help during this autumn and winter!

If you have spare bright-coloured fabric, or if you’re able to cut out triangles or sew them together and onto the tape, we’d love to hear from you! Templates will be provided, and we are planning some fun workshop times at the village hall.

To get involved, please contact Tammie on 07980 031248 or probusfunweek@ gmail.com.

Finally, The Probus Fun Week Team would love to hear your feedback. Scan this QR code to fill out a questionnaire.

Thank you!

THEend of the school year was a busy one, with the summer fayre being very well attended and received whilst raising funds towards our goals. The leavers’ disco was a great evening for all with memories being made and a lot of smiles all around — we wish Year 6 the best of luck in their adventures.

We would like to thank Sophie Baker, our Chair for the last two years. Sophie has overseen some great events during some very tricky times and we are very grateful for everything she has done.

This month we have launched a lottery to raise money and make a difference for our children. Please support us if you can.

A message from the curate

ASI write this, we are in the middle of Probus Fun Week and I have just got back from Homebase with some poles and cable ties for putting together banners for the Probus Church walking float in the carnival procession. It’s great to get involved with this community initiative and historic tradition (even if it hasn’t happened for a few years now). But banners, processions, rogations and walks of witness have been part of the history of the church for the last two thousand years. These ancient processions would start with a cross bearer, followed perhaps by a bible, the relics of a saint and then maybe a choir. Some processions would be times of celebration or unity, but unfortunately others could be weaponised to stir up division.

Well this year we won’t be carrying any relics and nor will there be a choir sadly but I do intend to carry a cross with me at the head of our procession followed by church members bearing banners representing our saints (Probus and Grace) and what they stand for,

along with banners for a number of groups based at the church such as the community larder, Little Lights, Spotlights and Messy Church. The motivation for marching may have changed over the years, but today there are two reasons I’m excited about Saturday. Firstly, this is an opportunity for the church to celebrate being a central part of the village community — something it always endeavours to be but which cannot be taken for granted these days. And secondly, this is a chance to for us to lift high the cross and show pride in the faith we share — not in an arrogant or divisive way but in a way that says ‘we love and follow Jesus and we’re not ashamed of that’. By the time you read this the carnival will be over and the bunting stowed away for next year, but my hope is that what we’ll be celebrating on Saturday will remain true all year round and can be demonstrated regularly without necessarily the need for a banner.

Blessings,

Probus Art Exhibition WHERE

does the time go? It’s hard to believe that it’s almost two years since the last art exhibition was held in the church! This year’s exhibition will be open to the public from Friday 8th September until Sunday 10th, and will feature drawings, paintings and prints, photographs, wood turning and carving, and stained glass by a wide range of talented local artists. Most of the work will be for sale, with a percentage of the money raised going to Probus Parish Church Fund — so as well as getting the chance to pick up a unique piece of original art, you’ll also be supporting a worthwhile local cause. The last exhibition raised just

over £1800 for the church. This year exhibition volunteer Neil McGill has managed to secure a ‘charity match’ through his employers, Hanson Marine, who will very generously match any money raised up to the value of £500.

The exhibition will close on the Sunday evening with a concert by the Mevagissey Male Voice Choir. Tickets are £6 each and can be obtained in advance by emailing probus.churchevents@ gmail.com, calling 07510 054838 or on the door.

Probus Fun Week

THEREis little chance that we can do justice in reporting on every event held over the Fun Week 2023. There were just so many events that we couldn’t possibly get to them all!

The organising committee that included Jonathan, Graham Bishop Snr, Naomi K, Oliver, Karen, Nik, Paul, Debbie, Michelle, Jill and Naomi B (aided by a host of volunteers) led by the ever capable Tammie Rowe and Graham Bishop Macrides did a superb job. They created a diverse range of inclusive

Bronte and Kitto enjoying the bouncy castle (Image by Emily)

events over seven days that appealed to a wide age range. They publicised the events widely and effectively (including on BBC Radio Cornwall), and engaged with the residents of Probus and surrounds to such an extent that most events were either very well attended or sold out. The ‘It’s a Knockout’ attracted a large number of teams to enter and the parade enticed lots of floats along with groups of local clubs and families on foot. Both were supported and encouraged by large crowds from the village. The waterslide on the field by the surgery brought more smiles to both kids, and parents, faces than I’d seen for a long time.

The events the team put on ranged from bingo to a family treasure trail, to board games, to a very competitive interactive

quiz between teams in The Hawkins Arms and teams in Probus Comrades Club. It continued with It’s a Knockout in two locations, with waterslide and bouncy castle. Then there was the a barn dance, followed by Johnny Cowling and Jailhouse, the kids sports and fun day, and Drums4Fun. The the Shindig vintage rally, returned with a fleet of steam engines, tractors and vintage vehicles, helped along with live music by Black Velvet and Flipside. The hightlight for many was the carnival procession (the first one in Probus for many, many years) with Probus Royalty taking centre stage. Finally, the ‘after party’ and BBQ at the Hawkins Arms. Phew! I’m sure to have missed something out - oh yes, the visiting Repair Van! Well done to everyone involved — it was a week that’ll stay in the collective memory for a long time.

Roseland U3A diary

OURbook this month was A Widow for One Year by John Irving. This is rather a long book, 637 pages, and is written in three parts. The first part is from 1958 when Ruth is 4 years old, the second part is from 1990, the third to 1995 when she is 41 and a widow with one child.

Some of the group were put off straight away by the basic language used. The story follows the life of Ruth Cole. She is the daughter of Marion and her philandering husband Ted, who is an author and artist. She was conceived after her two brothers had been killed in a car crash.

Marion cannot get over the death of their two sons so her husband hires a teenager to help him with his work, but in reality he hopes that Marion might take him as a lover, which she does. The young man is Eddie and he falls in love with Marion, that love was to last a lifetime. Her mother can feel no love for Ruth, as she cannot get over the loss of her two sons, so she abandons her young daughter and leaves her in the care of her father. This is just the beginning!

It is a very difficult book to describe in a small space, so I am borrowing a few words. It is a multi-layered love story of emotional force, erotic, ribald and funny. A brilliant novel about the passage of time and relentless grief.

There are so many characters that are in the book throughout and you do get to know them well. It is a book that I could easily read again.

Environmental Action Group were delighted when the chair of the Cornwall Bat Group, Rick Payne, visited us at the churchyard with detectors to assess what sort of bats there were in the area. These detectors pick up the frequency of the high-pitched sounds the bats emit to locate insects for their food, and each type of bat has a specific frequency enabling their identification. At sunset, we identified a couple of pipistrelles which are the smallest bats in the UK but no other species.

Rick gave us advice on how we could provide places for bats to roost and what plants to grow to attract insects and moths for them to eat. There are 18 species of bat living in the UK and it would be great if we could see more of them living here.

In July, the team tidied up the area around the large yew tree at the back of the church and removed bramble and overgrown holly from its base. Near there, we examined the very interesting gravestone of John Best, who died in December 1861. He left an important message for us all, however old or young we are, engraved on the headstone.

At the top of it, it reads ‘Time how short, Eternity how long’, underneath which is written:

Visiting Merlin ARNAS

Merlin helicopter landed in the playing field on Friday 18th August, we think as part of a training exercise. Thanks to Abigail Dawe and Nik Budden for the images.

We don’t know what John Best died of at such an early age, but his epitaph is as relevant today as it was when it was engraved on the headstone 162 years ago.

We’re so choughed

THISsummer conservationists celebrate a record-breaking year in the population numbers of choughs in Cornwall, with approximately 112 chicks fledged by 39 successful breeding pairs. The Cornish Chough population continues to spread around the Cornish coast this year, with breeding success on the Roseland and north of the Camel Estuary.

The oldest Cornish Chough, at 18 years old, once again fledged five chicks this year with his mate, for the third time in four years. Choughs were once extinct in Kernow and numbers are still struggling elsewhere in the UK.

The success in bringing choughs back to Cornwall is down to the partnership work of the RSPB, The National Trust, Natural England, Cornwall Birds (CBWPS), nature-friendly farmers and landowners, and dedicated volunteers. If you spot a chough in Cornwall, even in your garden, email your sightings to: choughs@cbwps.org.uk.

Girls’ football

FOLLOWING

the terrific Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, it would be remiss of us not to write about girls’ or women’s football this month especially as one of the current England women’s squad (Katie Robinson) is from Newquay and started playing for a youth team in Newquay.

Sadly there isn’t currently an all-girls team in the village, but there are several girls playing in mixed teams and some playing in girls’ teams elsewhere. In the first of two articles, we wanted to interview some of these young players to get their perspectives.

The first interview was with Perdy, who is 13 with her Dad Jon and Mum Becky

PN: Perdy, how old were you when you started to play football?

Perdy: I was eleven years old.

PN: Had you never played football before that?

Perdy: I played during breaks with the boys at Grampound Road primary school but never in a team.

PN: Who do you play for now?

Perdy: Probus. I’m just starting with U14s. I also play in the girls’ team at The Roseland Academy — It’s a mixed age girls’ team with girls in years 7, 8 and 9.

PN: What position do you play?

Perdy: It varies. For Probus I play in defence or midfield. In school I play wherever they want me to play.

PN: Where do you prefer to play?

Perdy: I like to play in defence.

Jon: You are quite good at stopping the boys coming through.

PN: Good for you Perdy. Is football something that you think you will

continue with for the coming years?

Perdy: Yes. I really enjoy it.

PN: Do you think you are a good player?

Perdy: I can be.

PN: Do you ever get to play up front? Maybe going up for corners to knock the odd header in?

Perdy: Not up front. I do go up for corners but tend to stay at the back a bit in case the ball pops out.

PN: Have you been following the Women’s world cup and do you have a favourite player?

Perdy: Yes, Lucy Bronze.

PN: A defender like you?

Perdy: Yes.

PN: Would you like to continue playing up to U16s and beyond?

Jon: The coaches say she can, but it’s up to Perdy. It will get harder as the boys get older and stronger.

Perdy: Yes, I’d like to continue. Hopefully get into a girls’ team at Probus.

What is your keepy uppy record?

Perdy: 22 I think.

PN: Thank you Perdy, Jon and Becky.

The second interview was with Layla and her mum Naomi.

PN: Hi Layla, how long have you been playing football?

Layla: Two years — I’m just going into the third season. Before this I never played with a team. One day the boys asked me to join and although I quite nervous, as I never really knew how to play, I did join them, and I must have played pretty well because they asked me to join them again and always after that.

PN: So, are you a good player then?

Layla: Apparently, I am.

PN: What team are you playing in now?

Layla: I’m just starting with the under 12s with manager Nigel Harding.

PN: What position do you play in?

Layla: I play in defence? I like to play there — I wouldn’t like to play up front.

PN: How many girls are in your team?

Layla: Just me, but there may be a new girl starting this season.

PN: Do you like being a defender?

Layla: Well, usually. Most of the time I like to have someone nearby to talk to.

PN: Have you learned the off-side trap yet?

Layla: Yes, I love it when we step forward and catch the other side out. One game an opposition player kept going offside, even though everyone was shouting ‘offside’, and I loved that.

PN: As a defender, what does it feel like to get the ball off an attacking player?

Layla: Most of the time I only play against boys. I always look out to see if there is a girl in the opposition team, but it’s rare. So, whenever it’s boys, I know I must play a bit rougher, to get the ball off them and that’s fun. As I’ve played against boys for two years now, I feel if I were to play in a girls’ team now, I’d be better in a way because I’ve only ever played against boys.

PN: Do the boys hate it when you defend well and get the ball off them?

Layla: It doesn’t really matter. Boy or girl, they’ve lost the ball and that’s what’s important.

PN: Have you been watching the women’s world cup?

Layla: No, not really — I like playing it, not watching it so much.

PN: How long can you continue to play for Probus?

Layla: I’m not sure I would like to play for anyone else. For the coming season we are getting new players in, so I’ll see how we get on this season.

PN: Will you play football The Roseland Academy?

Layla: I’m starting there in September. So, I have to see if I can get to the games.

PN: What’s you keepy uppy record?

Layla: I’m not sure I haven’t tried them for a while. I think it was 9, but I don’t really practise or train at home. I just turn up and play football.

PN: Thank you Layla and Naomi.

Voneus Broadband National Village Cup:

winners of the Western section towards the end of August. Congratulations, ladies.

Senior League roundup:

GRAMPOUND

Road’s historic Cup run finally came to an end on Sunday 30th July when they played Kent side Leeds and Broomfield CC at home in the National semi-final.

The Kent side batted first and showed their class by reaching a total of 1935 in their 40 overs. Best bowling for the Road was 2-37 from Alex Lean and 2-38 from Lewis Sanders. Alex Lean also claimed best batting score (26) by being the only Grampound Road batsman to reach double figures. They were bowled out for 70, meaning a disappointing end to what had been a fantastic cup run. Although not quite making it to the Lord’s Final, it was quite an achievement to reach this stage with over 350 teams from all over the country entering the competition and going further than any other Cornish side since 1994.

Women’s XI:

The Women’s XI has had a successful season, winning the East section of the Cornwall Women’s League with some outstanding performances and victories along the way. They are due to meet the

At the time of writing, the 1st XI’s results have taken an upward turn and the team are easing away from the relegation danger zone, and with a game in hand over their nearest rivals, are hopeful of a mid-table finish to the season.

The 2nds are fairly comfortable in their division 3 League, but the 3rds and 4ths have found it difficult this year to keep settled sides due to unavailability of players on a regular basis. The 4th XI use their League to introduce our younger players to senior cricket, so results are not seen as important as giving this valuable experience.

We are proud to be hosting this event and hope to see a large number of supporters enjoying a great day, all in the name of raising funds for a fantastic cause. Everyone welcome. We had a very disappointing season. Despite recruiting several new members, we were relegated to Division 2 in the mens league due to several key players being absent at crucial times.
