EDITORIAL
What cinema has always known El c ine lo h a s ab i d o d e s d e s i e m pr e In Chile, the year began with massive marches throughout the country, demanding a change to the economic model and a new social paradigm that would place human dignity at its center. We witnessed and participated in mobilizations that for some meant a paralysis in daily life, and for others, an awakening of consciousness that had been dormant since the return to democracy 30 years ago. When the contours of a more just society were starting to be outlined, the borders of the world were closed on high alert due to the pandemic. The taking to the streets of a united audiovisual community, that was working to record and document the protests as well as injustices and violence, had to be put on pause due to the emergence of Covid-19, better known as coronavirus.
En Chile, comenzamos el año con marchas ciudadanas masivas en cada urbe, en demanda por un cambio al modelo económico y de paradigma social que ponga en el centro la dignidad humana. Fuimos testigos y partícipes de movilizaciones que para algunos significaron una parálisis en la cotidianidad nacional y, para otros, un despertar y puesta en acción de conciencias dormidas desde el retorno a la democracia hace 30 años. Cuando recién se estaban pudiendo vislumbrar los contornos de una sociedad más justa, las fronteras del mundo se cerraron en alerta máxima por la pandemia. El surgimiento del Covid-19, más conocido como coronavirus, puso en pausa el trabajo territorial que se estaba haciendo, dónde unidos y unidas como comunidad audiovisual estábamos saliendo a la calle para registrar y documentar las manifestaciones así como también, las injusticias y la violencia.

The pandemic forced us to resignify different forms of creation, resistance, and unity, in which sheltering in place and maintaining distance from our loved ones became the highest possible gesture of solidarity. At a distance, new ways of connecting and supporting each other have began taking shape, and we continued to advance together towards a more egalitarian world, fighting to push greed aside. The audiovisual brigades that had been recording the mass protests now began to document the community food banks in different neighborhoods of the outskirts of Santiago. The screening of films in public plazas was now shown on the shared walls of different apartment buildings, visible from multiple balconies. Audiovisual content was released virtually instead of in theatres, now just a click away. Undoubtedly, in Chile as in the rest of the world, the audiovisual sector has managed to reconfigure its place on the map, reshaping new forms of creation and means of production, distribution and expansion. It is evident that now, more than ever, visual storytelling is vital for human survival in times of crisis, and that our digital platforms facilitate this coming together, through cinema and series without borders.
La pandemia nos obligó a resignificar las distintas formas de creación, resistencia y unión, en donde quedarnos en casa, lejos de nuestros seres queridos, se convirtió en el gesto de solidaridad por excelencia. Así de a poco y a la distancia, se han ido forjando nuevas maneras de conectarnos y brindarnos apoyo, de seguir remando hacia un mundo más igualitario, de no dejar que el individualismo nos gane. Las brigadas audiovisuales que antes estaban grabando las marchas masivas empezaron a registrar las ollas comunes en distintos barrios de la periferia, la proyección de películas en plazas se empezaron a hacer en murallas visibles desde el balcón de distintos recintos, y el acceso a una multiplicidad de contenidos audiovisuales se liberaron virtualmente, a solo un clic de distancia. Sin duda, en Chile como en el resto del mundo, la comunidad audiovisual ha logrado reconfigurar su lugar en el mapa, ha vuelto a trazar nuevas formas de gestión, distribución y expansión, confirmando que ahora más que nunca, que las historias en imágenes son vitales para la supervivencia humana en tiempos de crisis y que nuestros soportes digitales facilitaron esta unión sin fronteras a través del cine y las series.

At a time when the whole world is living one common experience, the necessity to stay united takes on a new meaning, and that is our call to humanity from the pages of this humble editorial. It is what cinema has always know. This spirit is what inspires us today, the one that makes us share with the world who we are and what we do.
Durante un periodo histórico en el que el mundo entero ha estado viviendo una experiencia en común, la necesidad de mantenernos unidos y unidas se resignifica y es nuestro llamado a la humanidad desde esta humilde página editorial. El cine lo ha sabido desde siempre. Ese espíritu es el que nos inspira hoy, el que nos hace compartir con el mundo lo que somos y lo que hacemos.
The pages of our International Catalogue of New Chilean Films is woven together by a multiplicity of cinematic voices, personal approaches towards filmmaking that when put side by side, reflect the collective experience of living in a country and in a world in transition.
En las páginas de nuestro nuevo Catálogo Internacional de Cine se van hilando las diversas propuestas cinemáticas de las y los autores nacionales, miradas personales frente al cine que, en su conjunto, reflejan la experiencia colectiva de vivir en un país y en un mundo en tránsito.
The Chilean films that will be released to the world in 2020 trace the political, from the most recent social movements to personal experiences, reflecting on topics such as social exclusion, access to mental healthcare, and clandestine abortion, as well as friendship, passion for art, and community.
Las nuevas películas chilenas que se lanzarán al mundo en este 2020 trazan lo político, desde los movimientos sociales más recientes hasta las fibras personales, reflexionando acerca de temáticas como la exclusión social, el acceso a la salud mental y el aborto clandestino, y también sobre la amistad, la pasión por el arte y el reencuentro.

In Chilean cinema, the shifting framework where the personal is political also includes the means of production, where linear hierarchies of power are being deconstructed, where we see more and more women and queer folks behind the camera, where the questions about who and how images are being generated are constantly in flux.
En el cine chileno, este entramado en donde lo personal es a su vez político, ha trascendido a las formas de producción de las obras, con jerarquías lineales de poder que se van rearmando hacía lo grupal, donde cada vez vemos a más mujeres y disidencias detrás de la cámara, donde las preguntas por quién y cómo se generan las imágenes están en constante mutación.
Our catalogue of 97 works highlights the relevance of these question, positioning cinema as a space of communion, as a bridge towards others, as a call to action.
Este catálogo de 97 obras pone en evidencia la vigencia de estas preguntas y posiciona al cine como un lugar de encuentro, como un puente hacia el otro, como un llamado a la acción.

Nino is a spoiled child who, immersed by a strong fever, is absorbed by a mysterious painting. Even though his mother had warned him, the trick that made him fall prey of the painting is unleashed. And so, Nino does nothing but get lost in a maze of images trying to return home.

The film looks to delve into the conflict, always with the focus on the walls of the Ground Zero territory of Santiago, the new Dignity Main Square. Las murallas dicen es un documental de observación que retrata mensajes y el arte callejero producido durante la revolución chilena de octubre de 2019. El filme busca ahondar en el conflicto, siempre con el foco en las murallas de la “zona cero” de Santiago, la nueva Plaza Dignidad.
Registro documental de la protesta social que sacudió a Chile durante los últimos meses de 2019. Específicamente, de las manifestaciones que tuvieron lugar en la Plaza de Armas en la ciudad de Punta Arenas, capital de la región de Magallanes.

A friendly tree tells where to go towards to southern forests. The “seeker” interprets the message and begins a journey that starts from a desolate sea onto the forests. During his trip, he knows, understands and listens to trees and forests and portrays his experience through the writing of haikus.
