MISSIONS NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation’s mission is to support and protect, as a fundamental right and value, a woman’s freedom to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices through education, training, organizing, legal action, and public policy. NARAL Pro-Choice America’s mission is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.

MESSAGE FROM OUR President It’s clear we’re facing a truly precipitous moment in the fight for reproductive rights. And while 2015 was an important year, in many ways it set the stage for an even bigger 2016. As you’ll see in this report, while much of our work had a direct and immediate impact, we’ve also got our eye on the big picture, creating campaigns that build beyond a single year, toward our vision that all women—regardless of income, geography, race, or circumstance—have access to all of the reproductive health care they need and deserve. Friends, It may not feel like it, but in many ways, the past year was a good one for reproductive freedom. Our supporters took more than 809,500 actions to stand up for their rights. We mobilized nearly 10,000 Iowans to pledge to caucus around reproductive freedom. We held anti-choice officials and organizations accountable for lying to the public about their efforts to restrict our rights. Nationally, we helped beat back a 20-week abortion ban and led the call for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate a rash of clinic attacks as domestic terrorism. In California, women will finally be guaranteed truthful information about their reproductive healthcare options, including financial assistance for low-income women, thanks to the proactive Reproductive FACT Act. We have so much to be proud of. But the past year was—no question—an incredibly challenging one as well, one that included a slew of state-level restrictions that are closing clinics left and right; the release of deceitfully edited videos that aim to smear abortion providers and further cut off access; and increasingly vitriolic anti-choice rhetoric that preceded—and continued even after—a deadly shooting at a Colorado abortion clinic.

4 | Annual Report FY 2015

Just how long it takes to realize that vision will in many ways be determined in the months ahead, which promise to serve up history-making moments in this decades-long battle for our rights. Regardless of the outcomes, NARAL will stay on offense, pushing proactive policies and mobilizing the 7 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion. And we will work to stop anti-choice opponents’ efforts to take back what is rightfully ours. NARAL doesn’t operate or litigate. We exist to advocate and educate. To mobilize. To organize. To push back against anti-choice opponents, hold them accountable for trying to block our rights, and make proactive policies that improve access for women. We can’t do all of this without the millions of people who stand with us in this fight. I want to thank everyone who has supported and joined with NARAL over the past year, whether signing petitions, volunteering to knock on doors, or helping us fund these campaigns. None of this would be possible without you. Warmly,

Ilyse G. Hogue President

MESSAGE FROM OUR Board Chairs Friends, 1973 was a landmark year for reproductive rights. More than four decades later, we’re at yet another critical juncture for the future of reproductive freedom. After years of repeated and often successful efforts to chip away, restriction by restriction, at women’s access to reproductive health care, we’re facing a watershed U.S. Supreme Court case out of Texas that challenges medically unnecessary laws meant to deny women their rights. It’s a decision that will reverberate through the states and impact the rights of women for generations to come. It’s not just the courts. At clinics in the U.S., violent attacks remain a real, visceral concern. And antichoice lawmakers and leaders are doing little to calm the violence, instead using inflammatory rhetoric and threatening to pass even more restrictions at the state and national levels that choke off women’s access to safe, legal abortion care and contraception. Amidst all of this, NARAL is on the front lines working to ensure women have access to the services they want and deserve, not just by mobilizing to stop anti-choice policy, but by growing the movement and building broad support to ensure we protect and expand reproductive rights in the years ahead.

Our members, activists, and supporters have been with us every step of the way, showing up in the cold to knock on doors in Iowa; calling policymakers to tell them to support proactive, prochoice policies; turning up in front of the Supreme Court to be visible and loud about birth control; and supporting our campaigns to make it possible for us to get truthful information and better access to reproductive health care. As long-standing supporters of NARAL—as board chairs, advocates, and donors—we both know we need all of our supporters, from all parts of the country, from all backgrounds and experiences, to win this fight. That’s why our members, activists, and supporters are so critical to our mission, especially in the year ahead. Without you, none of this is possible. And with so much on the line, we’ll continue to stand with NARAL and bring new supporters into the fold to help us all work toward a vision that all women have access to the reproductive health care they need, want, and deserve. Sincerely,

Sachin Chheda Chair, NARAL Pro-Choice America

That’s why we continue to be committed to NARAL. We see the day-to-day impact our campaigns have on the lives of women and families. From helping pass proactive laws that improve information and access, to breaking down the stigma and shame around abortion and birth control, to ensuring workers have access to meaningful parental-leave policies, NARAL is leading a movement.

2014 ELECTIONS: Exposing the Real Agenda HOLDING GARDNER ACCOUNTABLE

Full-page ad in

The Denver Post

When Sen. Cory Gardner tried to cover his anti-choice tracks, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran an ad series in Colorado exposing his real record on birth control. And our full-page ad in The Denver Post took its editorial board to task for endorsing a candidate whose views deeply conflict with its own editorial stance.

SPOTLIGHTING THEIR REAL PRIORITIES NARAL Pro-Choice America exposed the real agendas of anti-choice governors in Kansas (Sam Brownback), Florida (Rick Scott), and Wisconsin (Scott Walker), using targeted mail, phone calls, and TV ads to show voters that instead of focusing on jobs, these politicians went to work restricting women’s rights.

CALLING OUT WALKER’S HYPOCRISY NARAL hit back at Gov. Scott Walker with an ad exposing his anti-choice record, after he lied to Wisconsin voters in his own TV ad claiming he felt abortion was a decision between a woman and her doctor. None of the work described on this page was paid for or endorsed by our 501(c)(3), NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation.

EXPOSING THE TRUTH ABOUT CPCs Our national report—highlighting investigations in 10 states—exposed how so-called crisis pregnancy centers use deceptive practices to lure pregnant women to their facilities to try and block them from considering abortion. Read more at ProChoiceAmerica.org/CPCReport

MOBILIZING THE NEXT GENERATION Our campus program added over 2,100 new members to educate and mobilize students around reproductive freedom!

Mobilizing

STOPPING STUDENT REFERRALS TO CPCs Thanks to pressure from NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina student leaders, NC State University’s health website will no longer direct students to so-called crisis pregnancy centers.

EXPANDING ACCESS FOR STUDENTS Clark University’s NARAL chapter and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts successfully lobbied school administration to pass a campus Reproductive Bill of Rights— ensuring student access to no-cost emergency contraception, condoms in dorms, centralized sexual-assault resources, and permanent gender-neutral bathrooms.

CHANGING HEALTH CARE FOR OREGON WOMEN NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon launched its One Key Question initiative, urging primary care doctors to proactively ask patients, “Would you like to become pregnant in the next year?”—a simple but powerful initiative to change health care for women!
