Annual Report FY 2014 | 2

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT When I joined NARAL in early 2013, I knew I was up for a challenge. NARAL is a critical organization at a crucial moment. Just in my tenure as president, I’ve seen anti-choice opponents attack reproductive freedom from all sides, using state legislatures, Congress, even the highest courts to restrict access to reproductive services, from birth control to abortion care. At the same time, we’re seeing watershed moments that are pushing our supporters to take action, demand access on their own terms, and even expand reproductive freedom to ensure millions of women have the services they want and need. Reproductive freedom – including abortion access, birth control, and healthy pregnancies – is at the heart of gender equality. Put simply, women will never be in control of their own destinies without the basic freedom to choose how, when, whether, and with whom to have a family. NARAL and our national network of 22 state chapters and affiliates is taking on these fights and organizing our members to put the brakes on anti-choice policies. We saw some incredible moments this past year, from stopping an anti-choice judicial nominee from rising to

the federal bench to pushing back against discriminatory court rulings and expanding abortion access in California. Those moments, taken together, are part of a much larger movement of powerful voices that are speaking out for reproductive freedom to ensure that women can have the same opportunities as men and be truly equal – not just in some aspects, but in all aspects. We couldn’t do any of this without our members and supporters. Thank you to everyone who is standing by us and the millions of women in the United States who need – and deserve – full reproductive freedom.

Ilyse G. Hogue President

Annual Report FY 2014 | 3

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRS History, as the saying goes, has a way of repeating itself. And if we’re not careful, reproductive freedom’s own dark past is in danger of doing just that. In many parts of the country, it already is.

sometimes struggle to make ends meet. We’re inspirational women and male allies — straight, gay, cis, trans — who know that reproductive freedom matters to everyone. We’re strong, and we won’t give up the fight for our rights.

Across America, anti-choice opponents are working to dismantle women’s hard-fought freedom to choose: to choose if and when to have a child, to choose the right kind of birth control – ultimately, to choose what’s best for themselves, their families, and their futures.

We’re you.

Reproductive freedom is critical to true equality – without it, women cannot be fully equal and make the best decisions to ensure their own futures. But while reproductive decisions are at the heart of equality for women, reproductive freedom is critical to everyone. To have true equality, we need everyone – men, women, younger supporters, people of color, parents – to mobilize to protect those rights. That’s why at this moment, NARAL’s work is so important. NARAL is mobilizing and organizing new faces and new voices to stand up for reproductive freedom and ensure that the next generation secures the same rights we’ve fought so long for. We must make sure that everyone – regardless of income, background, or where they live – is able to easily access the services they need and want. NARAL and our members can be found in every state of the union and Washington, D.C. Who are we? We’re young people, apprehensive and excited about the future. We’re parents and grandparents who know the fight for our children doesn’t end when they leave the house. We’re people of faith and volunteers in our communities. We’re hard workers who

As long-standing supporters of NARAL – as board chairs, champions, advocates, and donors – we both know we need all of our supporters, from all parts of the country, from all backgrounds and experiences, to win this fight. We know what a world without full reproductive freedom looks like – including illegal abortions and women being cut off from opportunities – and we’re working to stop that and even expand reproductive freedom. In the coming years, we’ll continue to work to bring more supporters and leaders into the fold, to help them join NARAL, and to stand up for the rights we all need and deserve in order to fully thrive.

THE NARAL NETWORK NARAL Pro-Choice America has 22 state affiliates and chapters, which are independent entities that work in partnership with NARAL Pro-Choice America and NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation to advance pro-choice policies and combat anti-choice attacks. Check out our map to see highlights of their work and if there’s an affiliate or chapter in your state!

COLORADO

WISCONSIN

MASSACHUSETTS

We teamed with our affiliate to lead a c3 voter education campaign to stop Amendment 67 (“personhood”), reaching more than 62,000 voters via phone and mail.

We partnered with our affiliate on a c3 voter turnout project, reaching more than 23,000 voters through a phone and mail campaign.

We worked with our affiliate to build a rally of more than 1,500 after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state’s clinic buffer-zone law, and to help Gov. Deval Patrick enact a new buffer-zone law to ensure women and clinic staff remain safe.

CALIFORNIA Our California team conducted more than four dozen undercover investigations in the state at so-called crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) -- fake clinics that mislead, lie to, and bully women to block them from getting abortion care -- as part of a major report exposing their tactics and educating the public.

TEXAS

NARAL-affiliated states Non-affiliated states

Leveraging training from our national team, our Texas affiliate, in partnership with Progress Texas, went undercover at an anti-choice seminar on how to target and harass doctors, staff, and even patients at abortion clinics. Their findings were widely covered in national, regional, and local media.

OUR VOLUNTEERS AND ACTIVISTS CONTACTED 72,000 PEOPLE. NARAL MEMBERS VOLUNTEERED 8,624 HOURS -- THAT’S 1,232 WORK DAYS!

MOMENTS OF IMPACT Anti-choice opponents are attacking reproductive freedom across the United States. With your support, we’re not just fighting back and holding opponents accountable -- we’re expanding reproductive freedom.

01

We proved the majority of Americans support legal access to abortion. Our polling shows that 7 in 10 Americans stand with us as a pro-choice majority – and we’re using that data to shift the narrative around abortion and reach new audiences that share our values.

02

We stopped an anti-choice nominee from receiving a lifetime appointment to the bench. NARAL rallied the progressive community to keep Michael Boggs – a Georgia judge and former state senator – off the federal bench. His record on women, the LGBTQ community, and civil rights is abysmal. Forty-one organizations signed on to our letter to senators asking them to reject Boggs’ nomination, our supporters took more than 42,500 actions, and 12 U.S. senators expressed reservations about Boggs’ ability to rule fairly and impartially. Boggs’ nomination process slowed to a crawl, and President Barack Obama later announced that he won’t renominate him.

#NotMyBoss’Business

03

We rallied against Supreme Court rulings that jeopardize reproductive freedom. NARAL mobilized our supporters and allies around the Hobby Lobby and McCullen decisions, pushing back by introducing policy fixes, channeling public outrage, and ensuring leaders heard from constituents. For Hobby Lobby, we led organizing, messaging, and branding around #NotMyBossBusiness, reaching 3.7 million+ people online, and our activists took 40,000+ actions in the lead-up to the Senate vote to support the Not My Boss’ Business Act.

Annual Report FY 2014 | 6

04

We worked with Google and Yahoo! to take down deceptive CPC ads. NARAL worked closely with Google to remove twothirds of identified deceptive ads for crisis pregnancy centers (fake clinics that mislead, lie to, and bully women to block them from getting abortion care) that appeared on the search engine. We then turned to Yahoo!, which quickly followed suit. The consequences are real: Google handles more than 3 billion searches daily, including those for abortion and reproductive-health services; because of our organizing, thousands of women will receive the accurate information they need and deserve.

05

06

We broke down cultural barriers and stigma around abortion. NARAL and Upworthy partnered to launch Feminent Domain, a highly successful website with the goal of reducing the silence and stigma around abortion and sex. More than 6.2 million people visited the site to view everything from the Emily Letts video documenting her abortion, to cartoons exploring stigma around birth control and comedians talking about the insanity of transvaginal ultrasound laws. We reached new audiences and used data-driven metrics to find out what resonates with them to work to erase the stigma and shame surrounding these issues.

We held a judge accountable for bringing his anti-choice bias into the courtroom. After a 16-year-old living in foster care was denied an abortion by anti-choice Judge Peter Bataillon, who let his personal bias influence his decision, we joined with RH Reality Check, CREDO Action, and MoveOn to collect 86,849 petition signatures calling for the judge to be sanctioned. While the Nebraska Commission on Judicial Qualifications chose not to punish him, it was the state’s first significant review of judicial conduct on our issues in decades.

07 We galvanized more than 36,000 voices against harmful, anti-choice Pennsylvania laws.

“They got 86,000 to sign a petition they put out on the Internet. I thought that was remarkable.” ---- Sue Ellen Wall, Nebraska family law attorney and Republican pro-choice activist

NARAL organized our activists on behalf of Jennifer Whalen, who was sent to prison for helping her daughter obtain a medical abortion – a desperate decision resulting from restrictive laws that make it increasingly difficult for women to get abortion care. We delivered a petition signed by 36,000+ people to the Pennsylvania House speaker, asking the legislature to change the draconian laws that forced Whalen into a bad situation.

08

We grew our base – bringing in nontraditional constituencies – and strengthened our organizing. Hundreds of people turned out for our annual Men for Choice events in Washington, D.C., and New York City. Our guests of honor included state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in New York, and in D.C., Dr. Willie Parker, who was profiled in Esquire as the last doctor at the last clinic in Mississippi where women can receive safe, legal abortion care. Our hashtag – #MenForChoice – even trended nationally. These events are a great chance to expand and bring in nontraditional supporters, which only strengthens our movement!

09

10

We exposed CPCs on a national scale. NARAL and our affiliate network have been at the forefront of exposing CPCs, fake clinics that mislead, lie to, and bully women to block them from getting abortion care. Last year, we invested in five states through affiliate partnerships and grants to more deeply and widely investigate these fake clinics, laying the groundwork for a national report looking at the issue across the United States.

NARAL Pro-Choice America went on the campaign trail with our allies to protect reproductive freedom. We worked with our New Mexico affiliate and teamed with the Respect ABQ Women coalition to successfully defeat – by 10 points – the first municipal abortion ban on a ballot. We sent our organizers to knock on doors and helped reach more than 100,000 Latino voters through a Spanish/English radio ad – narrated by legendary Dolores Huerta – done in partnership with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, Advocates for Youth, and Young Women United. We also partnered with our Virginia affiliate to help elect prochoice Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Targeting pro-choice women who don’t consistently vote, we held Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli accountable for his dangerous anti-choice priorities as a state senator and attorney general. Through campus organizing, we called and knocked on the doors of 15,000 voters; sent direct mail targeting another 30,000 voters; and ran digital ads targeting women statewide in this neck-and-neck race that had a significant impact on the future of reproductive freedom for Virginia’s residents.
