34TH SEASON As the Board President of Capital Repertory Theatre, I’m extremely excited to welcome you to our 34th Season! For more than three decades we’ve created meaningful theatre with an authentic connection to the community. This season will undoubtedly be another great one that we look forward to sharing with you! On behalf of our Board of Trustees, staff, and actors, thank you for your continued support of our beloved artistic institution. TheREP plays a leading role in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Albany and the community at large. Your critical support makes this possible. Why are the Arts so important?
“We have to stop thinking about arts and culture as simply nice-to-haves. They are just as important as well-maintained roads and bridges. By giving us the chance to stimulate our minds with new ideas and experiences, they give us the opportunity to become more creative. Arts and culture are infrastructure for the mind.” – Todd Hirsch The arts are not ancillary. They, and theREP, as one of the largest arts organization in the region, are economic assets that form the bedrock of a successful community. Our diverse programming including the subscription series, On-The-Go! Educational tours, and summer acting camps, foster the creativity and innovation that is the foundation of our growing regional economy. With an annual budget over $2 million, a history of producing more than 5,000 performances and employing more than 1,500 professional artists, theREP returns more than 83% of our budget directly back to the local community. We bring vitality and commerce to downtown Albany in the form of more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists. We’re an economic engine not only for the entertainment district on North Pearl Street, but for the City of Albany and the Capital Region as a whole. It’s our hope that you enjoy a fantastic performance here at Capital Repertory Theatre. If you do, please consider a gift to our Annual Fund. Tell a friend, neighbor, or business colleague about the great experience you had, and remind them of the rich cultural offerings in our region. Ticket sales cover only a portion of the cost of bringing great professional performances to the stage and impactful educational programs to the classrooms. It’s through the generous support of patrons, subscribers, friends, and donors like you that we are able to present the great art and entertainment you’ve grown accustomed to. On behalf of all here at the theatre, thank you again for your support! Enjoy the show, and come see us again soon!

KATHY SHEEHAN MAYOR
CITY OF ALBANY OFFICE OF THE MAYOR 24 EAGLE STREET ALBANY, NEW YORK 12207 TELEPHONE (518) 434-5100 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Capital Repertory Theatre. We are thrilled to have worldclass theater in the heart of downtown Albany thanks to theREP. The Theatre has a rich history of producing excellent entertainment, giving us more than 5,000 performances since its inception in 1981. Oscar Wilde once said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” This year, theREP will live up to our expectations, bringing fabulous theater to general audiences and students throughout the region. We’ll experience many human emotions as topnotch actors make situations come alive for us on stage, and we’ll enjoy shows from classics to a World Premiere! The lineup includes the comedy-drama OTHER DESERT CITIES, the enchanting and inspiring THE SECRET GARDEN, the delightful comedy HOW WATER BEHAVES (World Premiere), the sidesplitting SOUVENIR, and an elegant and stirring rendition of HAMLET. Please join me in applauding Capital Repertory Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill and the Capital Repertory Theatre Board of Directors for their dedication to theater and the arts in Albany. Thank you to all the audience members, actors, designers, directors, technicians, sponsors and friends for helping to make truly spectacular theater possible in the City of Albany. It couldn’t be done without all of you! We invite you to come early or stay late to enjoy culinary delights from around the world right here in downtown Albany. We wish theREP continued success, and hope you enjoy the show! Sincerely,
Kathy M. Sheehan Mayor, City of Albany

BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Welcome to Capital Repertory Theatre! The story of THE SECRET GARDEN is close to my heart and seems right for the holidays, when we try to take a little more time to remember the capacity of the human spirit to overcome even the most tragic of losses. Based on the classic book by Frances Hodgson Burnett that has graced many a bedside table, this tale reminds us of the transformative power of nature and love to rekindle even the most damaged lives. The soaring score by Lucy Simon requires swelling strings, for which we have assembled an extraordinarily talented ensemble of actor-musicians. Throughout the show, you will glimpse these musician-storytellers tucked among the trees, the aisles and the wings, weaving the story of Mary Lennox and the magical garden she discovers. Creating this production of The Secret Garden has been a truly collaborative process. As the director of a musical, one needs to have colleagues who can work together to imagine and then create a world where song and story meet seamlessly. In his Capital Repertory Theatre debut as Musical Director, Josh Smith was called upon to write special arrangements to highlight the various featured instruments played by the cast. Choreographer Freddy Ramirez was charged with developing a grand waltz – traditional Indian dance -- and movement for the “dreamer” spirits to come in and out of the trees and hallways with elegance. This is all to say how grateful I am to be surrounded by such wonderful artists – and to you for being here to complete the world. For what is a storyteller without someone to listen to the story? As the holidays approach, I feel more and more grateful for the privilege of being able to tell stories to you, your family and friends. I hope that when the lights go down tonight, you will experience the joy of one of the oldest of storytelling traditions: huddling around the campfire to hear those very familiar words that have the power to transport us beyond our daily toil to parts unknown: ”Once upon a time ...” From all of us at theREP to each of you, we send our warmest wishes for your holiday season and thank you for being such an important part of ours. See you next time in the New Year!
DRAMATURGY Frances, Frances, How Does Your Garden Grow?
The Life of Frances Hodgson Burnett, Author of The Secret Garden
... a secret garden that brings life and health to those who enter and delight in it.
BY ADRIAN APPLEMAN, DRAMATURGY INTERN In late 1890, Frances Hodgson Burnett, whose fame had recently exploded, and whose career was often tearing her away from her family, heard news that her son Lionel had been diagnosed with tuberculosis. Upon the news of her son’s tuberculosis diagnosis, Frances frantically arranged plans to be by his side in Paris. She plotted out the different doctors from whom she would seek treatment, the various spas across Europe known for their successful therapies to combat consumption, and subsequently cancelled all of the demands her successful and prolific writing career placed upon her. On December 7th, she arrived in Paris from London, fully prepared to pour her life into saving that of her son’s. Her efforts proved to be in vain; that evening, as his mother cradled him in her arms, Lionel passed away. The life of Frances Hodgson Burnett, whose charming children’s stories of overcoming poverty, despair, and illness have enchanted children and adults alike for long over a century, was rife with tragedies such as this one. From her father’s death when she was three years old, followed
closely by the devastation of her family and relocation to the United States, to her two successive failed marriages, Burnett had a strong instinct for melancholy as well as perseverance. Her characters often find themselves in situations caused by conditions beyond their control: Cedric Errol in LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY ascends from his working-class childhood into extravagant wealth when his noble ancestry is discovered; Sarah Crewe in A LITTLE PRINCESS is, conversely, condemned to destitution after the sudden death of her socially and intellectually prominent father; and, of course, the plot of THE SECRET GARDEN is set into motion with the death of Mary Lennox’s mother and father from an outbreak of cholera in India. The tone of Burnett’s work changed dramatically after the death of her first son. Her next published work after Lionel’s death, GIOVANNI AND THE OTHER CHILDREN WHO HAVE MADE STORIES, featured a collection of stories solely about dead or dying children. Her writing did not cease, because her writing was the primary source of income for her entire family, but she did begin to spend more time at her homes in both London and Plandome Manor, Long Island, where she began to tend to her gardens as a form of healing (1). Lionel was a burgeoning poet at the time of his death, and his love of flowers kept her gardening until her own death in 1927. The time she spent in her country homes among her gardens planted the proverbial seeds for the story that would eventually become her most beloved work. A year before Burnett began writing The Secret Garden, one of the worst pandemics of cholera in history struck the Bengal region of British India. The disease spread quickly, claiming more than 800,000 lives over the course of twenty-plus years, reaching all the way to the Middle East (2). Though many of the British lives in India were spared due to dietary and hygiene customs, it nonetheless captured the imagination of a bereaved Burnett. Tuberculosis, though microbially far different from cholera, was also a salient health concern of the time, and her son had most likely contracted the disease at the family’s home in Washington, D.C., a city where swampland provided prime conditions for harboring bacteria. Disease beyond the control of the infirm formed the conceit of The Secret Garden: cholera in the case of Mary’s parents, debilitating grief in the case of Dr. Craven, and psychosomatic illness in the case of Colin. Though the story stems from morbid roots, the story itself is not characterized by gloominess. It is a story of overcoming what initially seems to be inextricable fate: finding freedom for Mary, finding strength for Colin, and finding happiness for Archibald Craven. This is all done by fantastical means—a secret garden that brings life and health to those who enter and delight in it. As Ann Thwaite writes in her comprehensive biography of Burnett, “She wanted life to be a fairy story. She wanted to make dreams come true—her own and other people’s.” (3) Sources: 1. http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/archives-cc/app/details.php?id=7512 2. http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/archives-cc/app/details.php?id=7512 3.
