With an annual budget over $2 million, a history of producing more than 5,000 performances and employing more than 1,500 professional artists, theREP returns more than 83% of our budget directly back to the local community. We bring vitality and commerce to downtown Albany in the form of more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists. We’re an economic engine not only for the entertainment district on North Pearl Street, but for the City of Albany and the Capital Region as a whole. Times Union Best of The Capital Region Reader’s Poll The only member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) in the fourteen counties of upstate New York, theREP has produced 33 seasons drawn from contemporary and classic plays and musicals, including 23 world premiere productions. In 2012, in association with its managing partner Proctors, the theatre launched a new initiative, the NEXT ACT! New Play Summit, to further enhance its core mission to create new works that reflect the changing populations and values of upstate’s Tech Valley region. theREP has been recognized by the Times Union Best of the Capital Region Readers Poll as the “Best Theatre Company” in the Capital Region consecutively for the last six years. RUSH TICKETS may be available 15 minutes prior to curtain. A price seating can be available at the Smart Seat price, subject to change and availabilty. LATECOMERS will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. You may need to be seated in an alternate location from your ticketed seats until intermission. YOUNG CHILDREN under the age of six are not allowed in the theatre. COATS may be hung in the designated area inside the café and along the back hallway near the restrooms. SMOKING is not permitted anywhere in the building. RESTROOMS are located on the main floor and are handicap accessible. Additional facilities are located downstairs. THE CAFÉ beverages and snacks are available one hour before the performance and during intermission. SNACKS are not permitted in the theatre, beverages are allowed, hot beverages requre a lid. Alcoholic beverages purchased at the café may not be taken outside the building.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN Welcome to fall at theREP! What is it about autumn? Each year I find myself wanting to settle in with spellbinding books, movies that make me cry -- and plays that help me think about life. Perhaps it’s all those years of returning to school -- being trained to trade the beachwear for sweaters and jackets and turn attention to going inside to think a bit… And so, today we gather for a uniquely American story about family and history – perfect for fall. I saw OTHER DESERT CITIES on Broadway, but revisited it after I took a road trip to California a couple of years ago. Traveling through the desert country that is so indicative of the life of this play, one cannot help but be thankful for a car with a good cooling system and an engine that is not going to break down! Driving in the air conditioned comfort with the radio blasting some vintage rock and roll, watching the thermometer register 118, I was struck by the man-made marvels that are the desert cities of Southern California. Jon Robin Baitz sets his play in Palm Springs, an oasis of privilege that sits amid vast, dry expanses of cracked earth and highways. Everything in this isolated paradise says that this is the good life. But even here, no one can hide from the truth that lies just under the crusty surface of the land, ready to be exposed with a kick in the dirt – or the mighty pen! The events that impact the masses, so far away, trickle down – or up – to the power brokers of history and get buried in the souls of their sons and daughters. PRESENTING JON ROBIN BAITZ (Playwright) Baitz’s plays include THE FILM SOCIETY, THE SUBSTANCE OF FIRE, THE END OF THE DAY, THREE HOTELS, A FAIR COUNTRY (Pulitzer Prize finalist 1996), MIZLANSKY/ZILINSKY, TEN UNKNOWNS, and THE PEARLS LETTER, as well as a version of HEDDA GABLER (Broadway 2001). He created BROTHERS & SISTER, the TV series which ran for five seasons, until 2011. Other TV work includes PBS’ version of THREE HOTELS, for which he won the Humanitas Award, and episodes of THE WEST WING and ALIAS. He is the author of two screenplays: the film script for THE SUBSTANCE OF FIRE (1996) and PEOPLE I KNOW (2002). He is a founding member of Naked Angels Theatre Company, and on the faculties of the MFA programs at The New School for Drama, and SUNY Stony Brook/ Southampton. His play Other Desert Cities won the Outer Critics Circle Award in 2011. MICHAEL BUSH (Director) most recently directed the Off-Broadway productions of BIKEMAN, PSYCHO THERAPY, CACTUS FLOWER, and BASED ON A TOTALLY TRUE STORY. the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City. He was associated with MTC for over 25 years and helped artistically guide more than 200 new plays and musicals, including the Tony® Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning PROOF AND DOUBT, and the Tony® Award winning LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! He was instrumental in the rebirth of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Cabaret & Performance Conference, and served as its Artistic Director from 2005 to 2012. Rice Award for Excellence in Arts, Culture and Education by the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District.
