LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS As the Board President of Capital Repertory Theatre, I’m extremely excited to welcome you to our 34th Season! For more than three decades now we’ve created meaningful theatre with an authentic connection to the community. This season will undoubtedly be an historic one, with smash-hit shows and all-new premieres! On behalf of the Board and Staff, I’d like to thank you for your continued support of our beloved artistic institution. Your support of professional theatre and the Arts in general is critical not only to the ongoing revitalization of downtown Albany, but to our community at large. Why are the Arts so important? As we continue to rebuild our local economy, we must not lose sight of the fact that the foundation of any successful community is built upon the Arts. Our region’s vast array of artistic organizations are a critical component of our regional economy.

“The rapidly evolving global economy demands a dynamic and creative workforce. The Arts and its related business are responsible for billions of dollars in cultural exports for this country. It is imperative that we continue to support the Arts and Arts education both on the national and local levels. The strength of every democracy is measured by its commitment to the Arts.” – Charles Segars, CEO of Ovation With an annual budget over $2 million, and a history of producing more than 5,000 performances employing more than 1,500 professional artists, Capital Repertory Theatre is one of the largest arts organizations in the region. In addition to returning more than 83% of our budget directly back to the local community, we bring vitality and commerce to downtown Albany in the form of more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists. We’re an economic engine not only for the entertainment district on North Pearl Street, but for the City of Albany and the Capital Region as a whole. It’s our hope that in just a few moments you’ll enjoy a fantastic performance here at Capital Repertory Theatre. If you do, would you please consider a gift to our Annual Fund? Maybe tell a friend, neighbor, or business colleague about the great experience you had at the Theatre, and remind them of the rich cultural offerings we have in our region. Ticket sales cover only a portion of the cost of bringing great professional performances to the stage, and impactful educational programs to the classrooms. It’s through the generous support of patrons, subscribers, friends and donors like you that we are able to bring you the great Art and entertainment that you’ve grown accustomed to. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, the staff here at the Theatre, and most importantly, the great actors on the stage, thank you again for your support! Enjoy the show, and come see us again soon!

BEHIND THE CURTAIN Welcome to Summer at theREP! Thank you for being with us for the rockin’ Smokey Joe’s Café, the inaugural show of our 34th season! We invite every audience member who comes to theREP to become a part of our community and our mission, “to create great theatre that builds authentic connections to the community we serve.” That idea of building community isn’t just lip service. Since 1981, theREP has been creating theatre with “community” at the center of it all. Before theREP came into existence, 111 North Pearl Street, which the theatre calls home, was the Cash Market. More than 35 years ago, a group of five business leaders spearheaded efforts to establish a professional theatre in the Capital Region. Working together with government, private business, volunteers and a lot of sweat equity, they forged a home for the arts here on North Pearl. Harnessing support of the city and an army of more than 300 volunteers, the vacant market was transformed into Capital Repertory Theatre. Thirty-four years and several renovations later, the theatre has produced more than 6,500 performances, serving as an anchor attraction that brings over 60,000 visitors downtown annually. We reach more than 15,000 students per annum with our education programs. Our lights are on for more than 250 performances every year, to provide an eclectic full calendar of musicals; contemporary comedy and drama; and classics and new works to wonderful audiences like you. TheREP is proud to be a member of LORT (the League of Resident Theatres), a network of 73 regional, nonprofit organizations that stretches across the country, including large venues like The Roundabout and Lincoln Center in New York City, The Goodman in Chicago, Arizona Theatre Company and Seattle Rep, as well as smaller theatres like theREP in Albany. We are all dedicated to the same purpose: to ensure the highest standards of excellence in all that we do. Working under collective bargaining agreements with Actors Equity Association, United Scenic Artists and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, LORT theatres are dedicated to paying living wages to the actors, designers, staff, and crew that create the productions for our stage and community work. When you tell others about our shows, join our volunteer team, subscribe, give to our Annual Fund, bring a young person to the theatre, and rejoice in the diversity that is the hallmark of theREP, you help us carry out our mission and keep our star shining! We are grateful to every single one of you who share in the joy of live theatre. Here’s to another 34 years! Enjoy all the arts that our beautiful region has to offer this summer! See you in the fall for Other Desert Cities.

HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL ACTOR By Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill and Margaret Hall

Young cast members of GYPSY.

Joe Schuyler

You might be surprised to learn that the number one reported fear in America is speaking in public (newsitem.com). Circumstances vary, but the dreaded butterflies that accompany public speaking anxiety can affect us whether we’re professional actors or just living our lives—toasting the bride and groom, making business presentations, explaining class projects, accepting an award or articulating an issue at a town meeting. Here at theREP, we recognize that not everyone wants to be an actor, but the skills that are essential for the creation of theatre can be especially helpful to anyone who wants to develop more confidence, needs to speak in public, or plans to work in a field where teamwork is the accepted working style. The basic tools of acting training can help young people use experience, thought and emotion as resources to understand others; increase self-esteem; articulate and solve problems; and work collaboratively with others towards a common goal. At theREP, through our summer theatre programs, we try to inspire young people to be brave, to get to know themselves and at the same time take a step toward conquering that number one fear of many Americans. We strive to provide students with a platform to experience, learn and enjoy—and tackle fear!—in a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment. Our STAR program (Summer Theatre At theREP) creates a new work every summer by unleashing preteen imagination. Every year a group of diverse young people transforms into a team that has researched, written, produced and performed a play based on their own stories. They agree and disagree; problem-solve; cajole; and learn to support the best in one another and, in the process, find their own individual voices. The participants in this year’s STAR program will focus on mythology in a modern world under the guidance of theREP’s seasoned teaching artist and writer, Noelle Gentile. This spring, as part of theREP’s residency in Albany High School’s afterschool theatre program, Noelle worked with a student team to capture the stories of 300 peers, forming the basis of The Identity Project, an exploration and celebration of the teens’ observations of self and community, which was performed at both theREP and Albany High.

STAR is for young people who want to have fun and work with others. It’s a great way to experience collaborative teamwork, goal setting and the rewards of respecting and creating with others. For those young people who want to explore the possibility of becoming an actor, or know that public speaking will be an important part of their life’s work, theREP offers a new weeklong Acting Intensive that allows participants to take the next step. High school students spend a week studying specific aspects of theatre performance—Speech for the Stage, Text Analysis, Character Development and Movement—while applying the skills learned to a monologue especially selected for each class member. At the end of the intensive, students have improved skills as well as a prepared monologue for use at future auditions! This August, the guest teacher of the Acting Intensive will be Timothy Deenihan, an extraordinarily talented professional actor who has studied and worked in theatre, film and TV in the United Kingdom and the United States. He was most recently seen on theREP’s stage in Venus in Fur and The Seafarer, and in area schools with theREP’s On-The-Go tour of An Iliad. Deenihan, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, says one of the most important things a young actor must learn is to, “forget how to quit!” Stating that, “there are countless aspects to the technique of acting, but they are all useless without indefatigable tenacity.” Professional theatres like theREP ultimately can help young actors on the road to becoming professional actors, by enabling talented performers who appear in our productions to start the process of joining Actors Equity Association, the professional actors union of America. Young actors earn points for being cast in shows at a union theatre, such as theREP, in the Equity Membership Candidacy (EMC) program. With enough points, you can get your Equity Card, which makes you legally qualified to be a “Professional Actor!” (Equity went to the Supreme Court to get the designation of a “professional actor” to mean a member of the union.) Over the years, theREP has helped a number of talented young actors obtain their Equity Card, thrusting them into the wonderful life of a professional actor. Some local favorites have received their cards for work at theREP, including, to name only a few, Kevin Craig West, Tim Hull, Brenny Rabine and Kristyn Youngblood,. This year, we count several new Equity Membership Candidates, including the majority of the young cast members from theREP’s spring production of Gypsy!

By 1953, their early songs had been recorded by a collection of true all-stars, including Jimmy Witherspoon, Little Esther, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Little Willie Littlefield, Bull Moose Jackson, Linda Hopkins, Ray Charles and Willie Mae (Big Mama) Thornton. In 1955, Atlantic Records executives Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler signed Leiber and Stoller to the first independent production deal, forever changing the course of the record industry. For the next decade, Leiber and Stoller were constantly at the top of the charts with songs such as The Coasters’ “Youngblood,” “Yakety Yak,” “Poison Ivy” and “Charlie Brown;” The Drifters’ “On Broadway,” “There Goes My Baby” and “Dance With Me;” Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” and “Spanish Harlem;” and The Clovers’ “Love Potion No. 9.” Following the triumph of “Hound Dog,” Elvis Presley went on to record more than 20 Leiber and Stoller songs, including “Loving You,” “Bossa Nova Baby,” and “Santa Claus Is Back In Town.” The true diversity of the duo’s talent came in 1969 with the genre-bending song “Is That All There Is,” recorded by Peggy Lee, which prompted music critic Robert Palmer’s comment, “the golden age of rock and roll has come to an end.” Leiber and Stoller share many major accolades and awards including induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1985, the Record Producers’ Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In early 1988, Presley’s recording of “Hound Dog” was placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1991, the pair was presented with the prestigious ASCAP Founders’ Award. Their iconic song “Stand By Me,” penned with Ben E. King, received a Grammy® Hall of Fame Award, and charted more times than any other song on Billboard’s Hot 100. “Stand By Me” is also on the list of Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” RIAA’s “Songs of the Century,” and is in the top five of BMI’s most-performed songs of the 20th century. The song also appeared on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” In 2000, while celebrating their 50th anniversary as a team, Leiber and Stoller received the coveted Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters and were honored with the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame Johnny Mercer Award. Artists who have recorded their songs include: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee

At the time of this printing, theREP has nearly 3,000 Facebook friends. Our Facebook page is a living room couch where we sit, snuggied up with our theatergoers, theater fans, their families, real life friends and co-workers. It is there that we share entertainment news and trivia, views, insider information on shows, both upcoming or in the house already. Special deals, date reminders, contests with great prizes, beautiful photos and videos. Add to that our Twitter feed, which has much of the same but with the added bonus of being a fly on the theater wallpaper at shows, in dressing rooms and in the meetings and special events that make us special.
