What is Permeation?

Protective clothing material

Permeation is a process by which a chemical passes through a polymer by means of molecular diffusion. This occurs without there being any physical holes in the fabric. How is permeation measured? Permeation is measured by exposing the outer surface of a sample of fabric to the chemical against which it is being tested. The exposure is total and constant, and emulates total immersion conditions. The inner surface of the fabric is monitored analytically to determine the amount of chemical (if any) passing through the fabric.

What is the “breakthrough time” The breakthrough time is the elapsed time between first exposure of the fabric to chemical and the rate of permeation reaching a target value. The target permeation rate for tests carried out according to BS EN ISO 6529 or BS EN 374-3 is one microgram of chemical passing through each square centimetre of fabric every minute. When measured according to a standard method, the breakthrough time is a value by which the performance of different fabrics can be compared.

About the Laboratory The Respirex Testing Laboratory is an independent test facility accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and has provided the majority of the results for this permeation guide. It offers a range of chemical permeation and physical testing services to European, International and American standards: • BS EN 374-3:2003 • BS EN 14325:2004 • BS EN ISO 6529:2001 • ASTM F739-07 Accredited testing is carried out at 23°C plus or minus 1°C, depending on the standard chosen. The laboratory can provide technical advice on the permeation performance of Respirex products, and which fabrics may be most suitable for different applications. Protective Suits

Suits to protect the user for a limited period. The range of clothing is great as well as materials and properties are very different. As a tool to assess the real protection to a given environment refers to the following excerpt from the EN standard. â&#x20AC;&#x192; If you are unsure about which suit to use, do not hesitate to contact us. All chemical suits are as a starting point based on the EN 340 standard for protective clothing. It is divided into six types - each of which is tied to an EN standard.

Protective against limited amount of splashing from liquid chemicals in liquid form with no directional beam and has no risk that liquid accumulates in the suit, but where there can be a fine mist of droplets in the air.

Standards and Norms for Gloves EN 374:2004 Protective Gloves against Chemicals and Microorganisms EN374-1:2004 Terminology and Performance Requirements EN 374-1:2004 defines terminology and performance requirements to chemicals and liquid density. Mechanical performance tested in accordance with EN 388 and achieved performance level is specified in the product data sheet.

The letter code shall be given under pictograms for chemical resistance. Breakthrough times indicated in the tests are based on laboratory tests and should be considered as indicative. The user must be aware of the real conditions of the surroundings and environment that the gloves used in potentially give other breakthrough times. While it should be noted that the relatively long breakthrough time in a test can also show other serious changes in the properties of the gloves and conversely that a short breakthrough time in testing can be misleading in actual use, while not always immediately obvious to see changes in the glove and/or glove material. The glove must be clearly labeled with three-letter code for the three achievement test results by the 12 chemicals listed. The limit per chemical is at least 30 minutes. In addition to the 12 chemicals listed above, wherein the glove is to achieve at least level 2 in at least three of the chemicals may be tested at other selected chemicals in the same manner. For these chemicals glove also achieve level 2 (30 min). An addition, EN 374-4, is under review, concerning degradation of the material in the glove. Changes in one or more of the properties of the gloves because contact with the chemicals used against eg. reduction of thickness swelling, color change, size change, stiffness, smoothness and appearance in general. If a glove can handle two chemicals from the list in 30 minutes but not the third, this is indicated with pictograms for lower chemical protection, and ”information icon” indicates that there is further information and documentation in the manual or product data sheet. Gloves that are waterproof receive this labeling and/or even the gloves that have an AQL value of 4 or lower. This pictogram will in future be used to lower chemical protection eg. on certain types of examination gloves. Some of the gloves that are now labeled with the old kemskyddspiktogrammet will continuously get new labeling by producers.

Sizes on Our Gloves Sizes and dimensions should be defined based on the hand, the actual circumference and length. Eg. is the minimum length of a glove in size 10, 26 cm. If the glove is made for a particular purpose, or have other requirements, it is possible to override this if specified in the manual and datasheet. Our textile gloves usually have color coding in edge seam. Other gloves have color markings on the inner label.

Choosing the Right Gloves for Various Chemicals! When choosing suitable hand protection against chemicals, it is of the greatest importance to know what properties the chemicals have and thus the risks to which one is being exposed. Tasting, smelling, or touching the chemicals is not recommended. By law, Safety Data Sheets must be available for all chemicals that are used professionally. All the necessary information for the safe handling of chemicals is listed in 16 points on this sheet. Point 8 should clearly state which material a glove should be made of in order to offer the required protection. In many cases, the breakthrough times are also indicated. When using pure chemicals (not a mix), one can even find suitable protective gloves by referring to the chemicals’ unique CAS number. With this number, it is possible to search various databases for information and find the proper material for protective gloves. In the event of any uncertainty, contact your glove supplier or manufacturer for a proper suggestion in order to avoid any injuries. MATERIAL

CHEMICAL PROTECTION

Butyl • Dense material.

Latex – natural rubber •N atural material, which since the mid 1800s have been processed and vulcanised to form stable products. •S uperior elasticity and tensile strength which provides a strong and tear resistant glove. • Provides a very comfortable glove with good dexterity. • Good temperature resistance and protects against electricity. •C an cause allergic reactions, which can be reduced by chlorination. Neoprene (polychloroprene) • Was the first synthetically produced rubber. It’s soft and elastic even in cold weather and with good durability.

Nitrile • Most common synthetic substitute for Latex (natural rubber). • Very good mechanical properties, primarily in abrasion and puncture. • Provides a very good grip. • Mold-resistant and can be water washed in the machine. • Very rarely cause allergy problems. Polyvinyl alcohol - PVA • Very durable and with a good wet grip.

• E xcellent resistance to organic solvents. •N ot resistant to water and aqueous solutions.

Vinyl - PVC (polyvinyl chlorides) • Synthetic proven material that provides a good grip and durability. Retains it’s softness even at low temperatures. • Contains softeners, which for certain applications can be unsuitable. • Do not cause allergy problems.

• P rovides excellent protection against water and detergents, good resistance to substances with high pH, such as lye.

Viton • Fluorinated polymer. • Heat resistant up to 300 ° C.

• Protects against a wide range of chemicals including chlorinated solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Multi-layer materials • It consists of PE in combination with various plastic materials which may be EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) or similar. • Very thin and is most often used with a suitable outer glove.

• Has unmatched properties in terms of chemical resistance.

Considerations for System Design Before designing an airline breathing apparatus, it is vital that a thorough risk assessment of the intended work site be conducted and that the necessary equipment be put in place in accordance with the risk assessment before undertaking the task. Areas to consider include: Primary Air Source This can be a factory airline, a compressor or compressed air cylinders. If a factory airline or compressor is to be used, is the air supply clean? An AFU will only remove water, particulates and oil mist. If there is any risk of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide entering the air supply, an air purifier must be used or an alternative clean air supply found. Supply Pressure Warning Devices How will the wearer know if there is a drop in medium pressure supply? Inline whistle warnings give an audible warning, whereas a DS4 (automatic distress signal unit) provides both audible and visual alarms. Reserve Air Supplies Do you need to provide an alternative air supply? In addition to there being stand-alone supply systems, the Sabre Modulair trolley system can be used as a back-up should a compressor supply fail. Connecting the System How are you going to connect the users to their air supply? Sabre has a series of hose types and lengths and CEN approved couplings to meet your requirements. Service and maintenance

Service and Maintenance “A chain is no stronger than its weakest link.” At Procurator, we consider the entire chain important, from the first link to the last. That is why we make it a golden rule to be able to assist our customers with service and repairs on all of the different products we offer. Breathing apparatus, fall protection, gas detectors, life jackets or IR cameras, whatever the product – we have the capacity and equipment to help you with warranty service. Annual Inspection Many different kinds of equipment have a statutory requirement for annual inspection (mostly protective products of the highest class PPE Cat III). Procurator Fire & Rescue attends to the registration and reminders on your specific products. Our service technicians are trained with most of the existing producers within fall protection, but also with products such as escape devices, breathing apparatuses, gas detectors, etc. Naturally, we provide the same service for fixed fall protection systems. Service and Maintenance of Portable and Stationary Inspection Systems for Gas Detection Installation can be easily carried out by your local electrician since we provide wiring instructions. We are also available as advisers throughout the entire installation. The deployment of sensors or whole systems should be done by Procurator together with your local electrician. Service and regular inspection can be carried out by Procurator on site, with a service agreement. Repairs Since many of the products we sell are quite costly, it is often worth it to repair them in the event of any damage. At our service workshops in Sweden, Denmark and Finland, we carry out repairs on almost all of the products we sell, including gas measurement instruments, life vests and flotation devices, fall protection and rescue equipment, and breathing and escape apparatus. For most of our products, we reserve spare parts for a quick fix in the case of any defect.

We reserve the right to change prices in the event of major currency fluctuations and to correct printing errors. For current prices, go to www.procurator.net and log in. Payment Terms 20 days unless otherwise agreed upon. Interest is charged at a rate of 1,5% per month. A statutory fee of SEK 50 is charged in the event of a payment reminder. Terms of Delivery Free from our warehouse or according to agreement. Minimum Order An order of less than SEK 1000 (excluding VAT) will have a charge of SEK 75 in handling fees. Back Order Will be sent with the following order. (If no new order is placed within 14 days, the goods will be sent at the latest 15 days from the time of ordering). Returns In return an order, contact our Customer Service Department no later than eight days after receiving the goods to register and to receive delivery instructions. The return of goods assumes that the product and its packaging are in an unused condition and that there are no price tags on either the product or its packaging. Return shipping is to be paid by the customer. Approved returns will be refunded the original price minus 30%. Custom-made goods and discontinued products may not be returned. Products with a limited shelf-life must be returned within eight days. Any returns made without prior contact and registration with us will be promptly returned to the customer at their own cost.

Complaints About Delivery In order to make a complaint regarding goods damaged during delivery, contact our Customer Service Department no later than eight days after receiving the goods to register and receive delivery instructions. A signature from the responsible transportation firm is required. The product should be returned in its original packaging including any accessories. Deliveries that are sent back to us without prior contact and registration will be promptly returned to the customer at their own cost. Complaints About the Product In order to make a complaint regarding faulty goods, contact our Customer Service Department to register and receive delivery instructions. Products should be sent back to Procurator unused or washed clean as soon as possible after the defect is discovered. Packaging – Pallets EUR pallets are normally used for shipping. If external transporters are used for shipping, pallet costs are regulated through the pallet pool. In other cases, pallet costs are charged according to current prices. REPA (Registry for Producer Responsibility) Procurator is affiliated with REPA. Printing errors We reserve the right to correct any printing errors.

Always check deliveries 1. Is the number of packages correct? Do not sign the delivery note before the number of packages has been counted. 2. Is the packaging damaged? Report any damages to the delivery firm. 3. In the event of any delivery error – contact the Customer Service Department as above prior to returning the goods.
