REPORT FOR DUTY FOR A GREAT DAY OUT Located just outside MOD Lyneham in north Wiltshire, the REME Museum is the museum of the British Army’s Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). Awarded a VisitEngland Hidden Gem accolade four years in a row, it provides a great opportunity to uncover the fascinating history of military engineering and the stories of the men and women how have served.

Discover the British Army’s Secret Weapon

The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers have been ‘keeping the punch in the Army’s fist’ since 1942. Whether they’re recovering a Challenger tank under fire or maintaining an Apache attack helicopter, REME personnel make sure that the Army’s cutting-edge kit is battle-ready. 2022 marks the eightieth anniversary of the Corps since its formation during World War Two. You start your tour stepping out of a landing craft onto the beaches of Normandy to discover the major role the REME Beach Armoured Recovery crews made in keeping the beaches clear for the D-Day landings. Then delve into a proud tradition of skill and innovation of those who have served: from the REME Major who resurrected Volkswagen from the w reckage of post-war Germany to the intrepid mechanic who powered the first overland crossing of Antarctica. You can also find out why the Museum has the bronze boots from the Mussolini’s statue. As you make your way through the eight modern interactive galleries, you will find fascinating displays from rare World War Two recovery vehicles to a tiny toothbrush made by a REME Prisoner of War. New for 2022 is the Museum’s latest temporary exhibition ‘Remembering HRH Prince Phillip.’ The Duke of Edinburgh was appointed as REME’s Colonel in Chief by her Majesty the Queen on the 9 June 1969. The exhibition charts many of his visits to REME units and even the Museum. There is also a number of objects on display including a stunning silver horse and carriage. The Prince’s love of engineering and technology made him perfect for the role, the relationship between HRH and the Corps of REME built up over many years meant REME played a key role in his funeral all of which is covered in the exhibition. The Museum has a conference room, dedicated Education suite and an excellent archives. For the little ones there is a themed play park outside the

Museum’s Crowns Café. Don’t forget to visit the Lyneham Memorial Garden located in the Museum’s grounds: a memorial to those fallen servicemen repatriated through RAF Lyneham, which also includes the BBC’s ‘Remembering together’ Poppy Mural created during lockdown in 2020. The Museum provides a number of events days throughout the year; from its World War Two ‘Wartime Britain’ event which includes re-enactors, period vehicle displays and a live firing artillery demonstration. To the ‘Model show’ with a large number of model clubs displaying their amazing work including some very impressive large motorised tanks.

Exclusive Access for Groups

When you book a group visit to the REME Museum you gain a tactical advantage: Optional add-ons include a guided tour with a real REME veteran, a behind-the-scenes viewings of rarely-seen treasures from the extensive archives collection. Or gain entry to the Museum’s secret hangar: home to the UK’s largest collection of repair and recovery vehicles.

Equipped to Welcome You

The REME Museum has level access throughout and is fully accessible, suitable for all visitors. There is dedicated coach parking and drop off spots right next to the Museum entrance. Free entry for coach driver or tour organiser. Troops can refuel with a catered lunch or cream tea from the Museum’s onsite Crown’s Café. Using fresh locally sourced ingredients all meals are cooked to order. They also cater for all dietary requirements. Visit King’s Lynn

the destination of choice for daytrippers & longer stays! Brim full of history & with a vibrant town centre, the west Norfolk town of King’s Lynn is the perfect destination to spend either a day trip or a longer stay, enjoying the superb mix of history, shopping & high quality entertainment on offer. The Hanseatic town of King’s Lynn was one of England’s most important ports from as early as the 12th century & this maritime past is still very much in evidence today. Fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes, with the elegant Custom House overlooking the tranquil harbour. The town’s heritage is reflected in an amazing array of historic buildings & at two

magnificent market places: Saturday Market Place, where St Margaret’s Church, designated as a Minster Church in 2011 by the Bishop of Norwich, is surrounded by splendid buildings & Tuesday Market Place, quite possibly one of England’s grandest squares. Daytrippers can discover the story of King’s Lynn by visiting a host of heritage sites & attractions, best discovered with the help of the free ‘Discover King’s Lynn’ printed guide (which contains a free map of the town alongside a host of self-guided trails) or by joining a guided tour of the town. The story of the town’s maritime trade, its fishing communities & its famous navigators can be explored on the Maritime Trail, or take a trip on the King’s Lynn ferry to see the maritime landscape of the King’s Lynn quayside from the banks of West Lynn.
