Kathy Brown’s Manor House Gardens at Stevington, just north of Bedford provides a garden destination with a very personal touch. Open from mid April to end September, groups are welcome to book morning, afternoon or evening (except Tuesday afternoons when the garden is open to the general public). Just one group at a time allows Kathy to give you her special attention with a chance to explore but also the opportunity for a personal tour with either Kathy or her husband Simon. Lasting 45-60 minutes this is an opportunity to learn about the making of the garden, the plant names, and amusing stories behind the different areas. The 4.5 acre garden has twenty delightful ‘rooms’ with highlights for April, May, June, July and September. Teas are home-made and highly recommended. A TRULY UNIQUE EXPERIENCE James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriot, became one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. His books, a series of stories based on his experiences as a young veterinary surgeon working among the farming community of North Yorkshire, sold in their millions throughout the world. Their great success spawned two feature films in the mid 1970s, followed by a television series, All Creatures Great and Small, which enjoyed global success in the late 1970s and early 80s.
Alfred Wight died in 1995 but his books still sell, the television series is still played throughout the world, and thousands of visitors continue to flock to The World of James Herriot Museum, which was established in 1999 in his hometown of Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Visit Arundel Castle in 2019
Set high on a hill above the River Arun, Arundel Castle in West Sussex has commanded the breath-taking local landscape for nearly 1000 years. The ancestral home of the Dukes of Norfolk, the Castle boasts original Norman architecture alongside the splendour of a stately home. Its extensive Gardens are a masterpiece of horticultural design. Spring is welcomed in by the Annual Tulip Festival, when tens of thousands of the flowers burst into bloom throughout the beautiful Castle Gardens. Last year’s display was the largest to date, featuring more than 60,000 tulips and 120 named varieties. The 2019 festival is set to be even more spectacular, with tulips galore expected from midApril to early May. Keen gardeners should also take the time to visit the Castle’s second Spring Plant Fair on 29 April, as well as in May and June when thousands of pom-pom headed Alliums will take over the Castle Gardens and grounds in the annual Allium Extravaganza. During its open season, the Castle is home to a number of familyfriendly events with the esteemed Raven Tor Living History Group bringing history to life through costume, crafts, weapons and combat displays. This includes Medieval Jousting Week, 23-28 July, the longest jousting tournament of its kind in the world. The highlight of Arundel Castle’s open season, the action-packed living history spectacular promises nothing less than a true clash of the titans with plenty of fierce rivalries along the way. Visitors will cheer on the world’s finest jousters as they demonstrate their brawn and bravery – charging at each other atop specially trained horses, clad in full plate armour and wielding lances. The historical and sporting spectacular will keep spectators on the
edge of their seats with a series of thrilling hand-to-hand combat challenges and hunting skills contests. A fantastic group day out, festivities also include have-a-go archery, falconry displays, face painting, arts, crafts and storytelling throughout a tented medieval encampment against the backdrop of the stunning grounds and ancient Castle. The school holidays are packed with educational days out and many feature the chance for over 8’s to try fun activities such as archery. Easter Weekend 2019, 20-22 April, will be one to remember with A Call to Arms! Kings and Crusaders. Visitors will see the Castle become the scene of preparation for Richard The Lionheart, King of England, to embark on the Third Crusade. On 25-27 May, over the summer half term, Raiders of the 15th Century: England vs. France will transport visitors back to a turbulent time in England’s history with the portrayal of a French raiding party engaging with English forces beneath the mighty Castle. Here you can take a guided tour on-board HMS Alliance Britain’s only surviving Second World War era ocean-going submarine and discover what it was like to live and work on a submarine. Learn about the weapons used by the Royal Navy at Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower. This award-winning museum contains weapons used by the Navy throughout the centuries and is housed in the 18th century buildings of the Navy’s former armaments depot. These two museums are part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and are linked by the Waterfront Trail it is a walking trail that runs for two miles. The trail offers spectacular views across Portsmouth Harbour. The Museum of Diving was voted one of the top six familyfriendly museums in the UK and its exhibits cover all aspects of diving from underwater sports and spear fishing to military, commercial and scientific research diving. Arley Hall is one of the most interesting and attractive stately homes in the North West. Within its eight acres of formal garden, which can take you several hours to meander around, there are many different areas, each with its own distinctive character. On the NE side of the house, beyond the Chapel is The Grove, a well established arboretum and a Woodland Walk of about 6 or 7 acre. The Grove has a pathway approx 1/3rd of a mile long & it will take you approx 30 minutes to walk around depending on your pace & interest in the planting, while the Woodland Walk is approx 1/5th of a mile long & will take you approx 15 minutes to walk, again depending on your pace. Arley was taken over by Birmingham gangsters in November 2015 after the BBC decided the hall would be the perfect home for Tommy Shelby in Series 3 of Peaky Blinders. Actors Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson & Joe Cole spent a month filming here. Oscar-nominated Hollywood star Tom Hardy also had a day on set. Discover Broughton Castle
Broughton Castle is essentially a family home lived in by Lord and Lady Saye and Sele and their family. The original medieval manor house was built in about 1300 by Sir John de Broughton and stands on an island site surrounded by a moat. The castle was greatly enlarged between 1550 and 1600, at which time it was embellished with magnificent plaster ceilings and fine fireplaces.

Where the Past Passes By..... Here you can see a unique project; the creation of a museum of street transport designed to show the development of mechanical transport over the best part of a century. The essence of transport is movement, so we are building a living museum where vehicles of yesteryear can be seen in action, where half-forgotten sounds of the past are brought back to life and where visitors can journey back in time by travelling on a few of the exhibits along the Museum’s streets. Many old vehicles seem ill at ease in a rural environment, so our aim is to develop a street scene of houses and shops, complete with authentic street furniture of bygone days, rescued by us from many parts of the country. At Carlton Colville we have one of the widest ranges of preserved vehicles of any museum, and further exhibits are still accepted from time to time, although restrictions on covered accommodation necessarily confine these mainly to items of local or specific historic interest. Our story began back in 1962 when four local tramway enthusiasts rescued the body of an old Lowestoft tramcar, no. 14, from its use as a summerhouse at Gunton. From this grew the idea of forming a transport museum, and as a result the East Anglia Transport Museum was founded on its present site in 1965. A Society was formed with the object of developing and running the Museum and started off with a few old vehicles which had been either donated or loaned, but with no other assets whatsoever. The huge task lay ahead of transforming a disused meadow,into a museum with depots, stores, workshops, administrative offices, refreshment facilities and toilets, not forgetting roads, tram tracks, overhead wiring for trams

and trolleybuses, and a light railway. The Museum is fully registered and has charitable status. Whilst it serves principally as a major tourist attraction in Waveney, great emphasis is also placed on its educational role. There is a chance to travel on types of vehicles now half forgotten, and you are free to wander around the Museum site or to take a stroll along our woodland path to the tram terminus at Hedley Grove. Other amenities include our shop, which is particularly well stocked with books and souvenirs, and the Terminus Tearooms where light refreshments are reasonably priced and ice cream and soft drinks are always available.

Suggested Itinerary Morning - Spend the morning browsing round Keswick town centre. You will discover lots of lovely shops both in the main Market Square and down every alley and side street. There are unique independent shops not found in the traditional high street. Most of the art galleries are off the main square and sell photographs, paintings, pottery and jewellery by local artists and craftspeople. If you need outdoor gear or equipment Keswick has a wide range of specialist retailers plus you will find a good choice of fashion shops. There are various shopping areas in Keswick with a mixture of traditional and contemporary shops, don’t miss Packhorse Court, just off the Market Square, Lake Road and St John’s Street as well as Station Street and Tithebarn Street. There is a weekly market on Thursday and Saturday. Afternoon - Take the short walk to Derwentwater lakeshore and boat landings. The regular launch service around the lake starts from here and rowing and small motor boats can be hired. It takes about 15 minutes level leisurely stroll via Lake Road and the beautiful gardens of Hope Park to walk to the lake from Keswick Market Square. There are seven waymarked walks signposted from the National Trust shop at the boat landings. Ranging from just 15 minutes to 1¾ hours the routes are easy to follow, whichever one you choose .If time is short only five minutes’ walk brings you to the not to be missed Friar’s Crag with its tremendous views across the lake and towards Borrowdale.

Bressingham has been the official home to the Dads Army Appreciation Society’s collection since 2000. The exhibition comprises a recreation of Walmington on Sea the fictional home to Captain Mainwaring and his men. The Church Hall, where we show episodes the Bressingham collection is featured in, Captain Mainwaring’s office – here you can try on Home Guard uniforms. Along the street there is Jones’ Butchers shop, Swallow Bank, Frasers Funeral parlour as well as Walmington on Sea Post Office, a printers and Toy Shop. Bressingham was happy to lend to the BBC some of its historic collection to feature in the show, Traction Engines and Rollers feature in episodes but probably the most memorable exhibit in the Bressingham collection is the Fire Engine. You can also see the staff car Pike took his girl to the pictures in, Jones’ Butchers Van and the town dustcart – both as featured in the feature film of the 1970s.
