Grand Days Out in Doncaster

You think you know Doncaster? Well it’s probably a good time to have a new look at what’s on offer! Whether you’re from Doncaster or looking for somewhere new to visit the town really does have a huge amount of things to make sure your Grand Day Out is special and memorable. Alternatively Boston Park Farm is a great day out for younger children, especially from mid-July until the end of October when a new Maize Maze is laid out each year. Then there’s the fabulous 69 acres that make up Sandall Park, here there’s fitness trails; sensory trails and herb gardens; not to mention the outdoor gym and the tree trail. Why not pack a picnic for your Grand Day or visit the café in the park, which has ample free parking and is fully accessible.

Let’s begin with family days out, you really will be spoilt for choice with so many attractions in the town centre and within just a few miles that you may need to schedule your return trips immediately to fit it all in! There are sites of historic interest including Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, Ashworth Barracks and the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum. For those seeking a more wild adventure then a trip to the UK’s largest walk through Wildlife Park is a must. Just a few miles out of the town centre you’ll find the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. With nearly 400 animals of 70 different species it’s a fantastic place to experience a truly breath-taking walkthrough wildlife adventure. The park is a must for any family day out and you’ll see everything from bugs to wallaby and polar bears to meerkats.

With nearly 2,000 years of Doncaster history it’s not surprising that we have a lot to be proud of and many fine buildings and places of interest. So why not delve into Doncaster’s past to soak up some culture during your visit! A fragment of Roman Doncaster can still be seen in the grounds of Doncaster Minster and Doncaster Museum houses many Roman artefacts, including the extremely rare Danum Shield, one of only a handful of Roman Army shields ever found anywhere in the world. A Roman altar and a well-preserved dagger are also on display as well as many Roman coins found here. During the Norman period castles appeared across the country and we are fortunate to have two well preserved examples in Doncaster. The privately owned Tickhill Castle and Conisbrough Castle. The latter ironically escaped destruction during the Civil War as it was deemed to be indefensible and therefore of no value. The Keep Tower remains virtually intact and one of the best preserved in Europe. During the Georgian period many fine country houses and stately homes were built in Doncaster. Cusworth Hall is one dating from the 1740s and occupying a commanding view over the town below. The Grade I listed Hall and grounds are open to the public and

balloon flights from the grounds allow you to see the estate from above. Brodsworth Hall was built during the Victorian era and was maintained exactly as it was when the last owners left in the 1980’s but is now undergoing a huge conservation project to maintain and preserve its splendour. Brodsworth Hall’s fine gardens are also a must for any visitor to Doncaster. In the heart of the town centre you will find The Mansion House one of only 3 in the country. Rich ornamentation and gilding adorn this building and, since the design was openly copied from an earlier design for a palace in Whitehall, we effectively have what was designed to be a Royal Palace right in the middle of Doncaster. For those interested in military history we have two terrific museums that are great fun for the entire family. The Regimental Museum of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI) traces the origins of this regiment and also explains why Yorkshire Day is celebrated on 1 August. Meanwhile Ashworth Barracks is home to the Victoria Cross Trust and tells the story of many of the recipients of the VC, with uniforms, weapons and realistic scenes depicting battlefields. York’s Chocolate Story, located in the heart of York, is an entertaining and informative guided tour through the history of York’s most famous chocolate-making families and their finest creations. You’ll discover chocolate’s origins, how to make it, how to taste it like an expert and even the sustainable future of chocolate. Visitors can learn how a simple cocoa bean is transformed into the finest chocolate, and take a look at the history of York’s most iconic chocolate brands. Then master the secrets of the chocolatier, as you create hand-made chocolates for yourself, before seeing how the experts do it.

Our engaging guides will be telling tales that have come straight from the workers themselves, while offering a series of exclusive samples connected to the company. Bressingham has been the official home to the Dads Army Appreciation Society’s collection since 2000. The exhibition comprises a recreation of Walmington on Sea the fictional home to Captain Mainwaring and his men. The Church Hall, where we show episodes the Bressingham collection is featured in, Captain Mainwaring’s office – here you can try on Home Guard uniforms. Along the street there is Jones’ Butchers shop, Swallow Bank, Frasers Funeral parlour as well as Walmington on Sea Post Office, a printers and Toy Shop. Bressingham was happy to lend to the BBC some of its historic collection to feature in the show, Traction Engines and Rollers feature in episodes but probably the most memorable exhibit in the Bressingham collection is the Fire Engine. You can also see the staff car Pike took his girl to the pictures in, Jones’ Butchers Van and the town dustcart – both as featured in the feature film of the 1970s. The Television Series ‘Dad’s Army’ ran from 1968 to 1977 with a total of 80 episodes - and you can still catch the repeats to this

day, over 30 years after the filming of the very first episode. Who can forget the inimitable characters played by Clive Dunn, Arthur Lowe, John Laurie, John Le Mesurier, Jim Beck, Ian Lavender, Arnold Ridley, Frank Williams, Edward Sinclair and Bill Pertwee! Not only did the show make household names of these main characters, but it also brought a host of other ‘comedy faces’ to our television screens for the very first time. The series was filmed in and around Thetford (including the Stanford training area) and included many local residents from the surrounding countryside. The release of the 2016 Feature Film only goes to show how the show has lived on un the minds of the public, and is always ready to gently amuse the young and the old of every generation. As the finale of the Arundel Festival, the Castle is also planning two nights of open air Shakespeare on 25 and 26 August. Gladiators are go at the Beacon Museum, Whitehaven.

A unique collaboration for The Beacon Museum, their autumn exhibition will feature content from the Jorvik museums in York, as well as items from the Roman collection at Tullie House. It will allow visitors to explore the mysterious story of six gladiators, see their skeletal remains and uncover the relics of Britain’s Roman past. Running from 16 September - 3 December, the exhibition will provide the perfect backdrop for the mysterious autumn half term antics in store for October. It will also include a life-like Roman settlement, transporting visitors back 2,000 years, as well as a number of interactive activities and talks. The museum’s Business Development Manager, Alan Irwin said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Jorvik to deliver this exhibition. This is the first time we’ve had human remains in the museum and that Horrible Histories style appeal always captures the imagination for our audience. The children’s activities that come with it will be interactive and immersive and of a very high quality.”

The museum will welcome special guest, the renowned actor and historian, Sir Tony Robinson, for an exclusive launch event on Saturday 23rd September. The team are delighted that Tony will be giving a free talk to showcase the upcoming exhibition, but also the official opening of the Beacon Portal as a community venue and a part of the museum experience. Trevor Basin Visitor Centre, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Llangollen Canal, World Heritage Site. We dare you cross it and not marvel at the sheer scale and immense stature of it. In fact, the experts at UNESCO say that Pontcysyllte represents a ‘masterpiece of human creative genius’ and that it is an outstanding example of construction that ‘illustrates a significant stage in human history’. And that’s why in 2009 it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site making it as important as places like the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall, China and Stonehenge. The Canal & River Trust cares for over 2,000 miles of the nation’s waterways, including hundreds of aqueducts and bridges. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a masterpiece of civil engineering and forms the centrepiece of the 11-mile World Heritage Site, constructed by the famous canal engineers Thomas Telford and William Jessop between 1795 and 1805. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct or sometimes known as the ‘Stream in the Sky’ measures 1,007 feet long and 126 feet high, making it the longest and highest navigable aqueduct in the UK, it carries the beautiful, rural Llangollen Canal over the River Dee valley. The cast iron trough is supported by 18 slender sandstone piers and 19 elegant arches, each has a 45 foot span. The joints of the trough were sealed with Welsh flannel covered in white lead and heap rolled in tar. The mortar was mixed with lime, water and ox blood for strength. 500 men were employed to construct the canal and aqueduct using simple wooden scaffolding, primitive cranes and sheer muscle power. It holds 1.5 million litres of water – enough for 16,666 baths!

With 11 miles of World Heritage Site to explore, it’s more than just an Aqueduct - in fact there are two, along with two tunnels and an amazing horseshoe shaped waterfall. The Horseshoe Falls is where it all begins, Telford designed the weir to draw water from the River Dee into the canal and, like so many of his creations, it only seems to enhance the beauty of the landscape around it. The canal then meanders through to Llangollen Wharf and over to the famous aqueduct, through two tunnels, one known locally as the ‘darkie’ and beyond to Chirk Aqueduct which crosses the English/Welsh border 70 feet above the beautiful Ceiriog Valley. The aqueduct which has 10 circular masonry arches, was built between 1796 and 1801 by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. Trevor Basin Visitor Centre houses a treasure trove of curious artefacts dating back to the canals construction, you can see, hear and watch ‘Stories from the Aqueduct’ as well as a superb animation of how the Victorian engineers solved the problem of building a canal so high in the sky. After which, you and your kids will be challenged to build it yourselves using our fantastic wooden ‘build the aqueduct’ puzzle. The visitor centre is mainly run by the friendly and helpful volunteers that so kindly give their time to ensure visitors enjoy their time exploring the World Heritage Site and the local area. You can experience the excitement of a trip across the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in one of our narrowboats. Our public trips run every day from Easter to October and are ideal for groups of up to 50. Family parties enjoy that special occasion on our

restaurant boat which caters for up to 20 guests. We also offer a Sunday Lunch trip, on which you enjoy a 2 course roast lunch during a 2 hour journey and for which booking is essential. This trip runs until Christmas.

Welcome to Borth The little seaside resort of Borth is situated on Cardigan Bay, near the northernmost point of the County of Ceredigion in West Wales. Ceredigion is known to many by its former name, Cardiganshire, or Sir Aberteifi in Welsh. Borth’s main attraction to visitors is its wonderful long beach of golden sand and shingle, which stretches for over two miles north to south. At the northern end of this superb beach is the impressive sand dune system of the Ynyslas National Nature Reserve, also known as the Dyfi National Nature Reserve, which juts out halfway across the mouth of the Dovey Estuary, enclosing a sheltered, boat-user’s haven, or even heaven, behind it.

Borth’s award-winning beach is the longest in Ceredigion and has a particularly shallow gradient, making it especially popular with families with younger children and sailboard enthusiasts. The tide goes out a long way, so its shallow waters are great for the little ones to paddle in and splash about. At the southern end of this wonderful beach, an ancient submerged forest is exposed by the ebbing tide. Welsh legend has it that the trunks of and tree stumps of old forests long hidden under sand and sea, are the remains of the land of Cantre’r Gwaelod, which disappeared under the waves of Cardigan Bay, long ago.
