Haddon Hall, one of England’s most elegant and timeless stately homes, reopens its doors on April 12th to once again welcome the general public, giving visitors the chance to immerse themselves in 900 years of history, art and craftsmanship, along with the opportunity to stroll around the magnificent cascading Tudor gardens, enjoying uninterrupted views of the Peak District. Haddon has become the choice location for many film-makers, playing host to no less than three versions of ‘Jane Eyre’, it became Prince Humperdinck’s Castle in cult movie The Princess Bride and was also used in ‘Elizabeth’, ‘Pride & Prejudice’, ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’, BBC series ‘Gunpowder’ and most recently ‘Mary Queen of Scots’, with stars such as Dame Judi Dench, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Liv Tyler and Margot Robbie all filming at Haddon Hall over the last few decades. Haddon Hall hosts a number of events throughout the year, promising something for everyone, including free guided tours of the Hall and gardens, music recitals, exhibitions and plenty of family friendly activity. Haddon is a magical place for children to learn and explore, with children entering for free. Families can enjoy picnics, archery in the Chapel Fields on various dates throughout the year, Sir John Savile’s Household, which allows guests to step back into Medieval times, and new for 2019, October halfterm will see Haddon transformed for ‘Wizard School’, not to mention the magic Christmas brings to the hall throughout December. Crich Tramway Village offers one of Derbyshire’s great family or group days out and a step back in time. Vintage trams run along a period street, climbing a mile and a half of track that provides breathtaking views of the surrounding Derbyshire countryside. Experience the fascinating Woodland Walk & Sculpture Trail, which winds its way back to the village, or remain on the tram and be dropped off outside The Red Lion Pub and Tearooms, before visiting the fascinating Exhibitions and Workshop Viewing Gallery. There are also picnic areas and indoor and outdoor play areas to keep the children entertained. The Great Exhibition Hall features a Century of Trams, from horse drawn to the electric era. In addition, a new exhibition, ‘Michael Holroyd Smith – Electrifying the Future’ explores the life and work of ‘History Maker’ Michael Holroyd Smith, with hands on exhibits, digital interactives and previously unseen items from the archive. Holroyd Smith was a pioneering inventor of the late 19th and early 20th century who changed the course of tramway history in the UK and had far reaching influence in the engineering world. by Tram. This exhibition reveals how, in the early 20th Century, tramcars became mobile post boxes, carrying and delivering letters and parcels. It explores some of the challenges that had to be overcome in order to provide this service. Included in the exhibition is a fascinating display of the different items that could and couldn’t be delivered using the tramway postal services, as well as the post boxes the tramcars carried. Discover how tramcars have been represented on postage stamps through the years and have a go at designing your own tram-themed stamp. For a spot of retail therapy, The Forge Gift Shop offers mementoes of your visit and the traditional sweet shop enables you to by your old favourites by the quarter. Details about our special events throughout the season can be found on our website. Pre-booked groups of ten or more receive discounted rates. Coach drivers receive free admission and a refreshment voucher. An Access Tram for wheelchair users runs twice a day on request, and there is disabled access to all of the facilities. A TRULY UNIQUE EXPERIENCE James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriot, became one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. His books, a series of stories based on his experiences as a young veterinary surgeon working among the farming community of North Yorkshire, sold in their millions throughout the world. Their great success spawned two feature films in the mid 1970s, followed by a television series, All Creatures Great and Small, which enjoyed global success in the late 1970s and early 80s.
Alfred Wight died in 1995 but his books still sell, the television series is still played throughout the world, and thousands of visitors continue to flock to The World of James Herriot Museum, which was established in 1999 in his hometown of Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

a unique destination of learning and discovery Wakehurst sits on the High Weald of Sussex in Ardingly and is Kew’s Wild Botanic Garden. With more than 500 acres of botanic gardens, woodlands and a nature reserve to discover there’s enough to give all the family an exciting, fascinating and inspiring day to remember. The Millennium Seed Bank – the most bio-diverse spot on earth - also calls Wakehurst it’s home and the atrium is open to the public, allowing a glimpse of our scientists at work. The nearby Mansion Pond has a stunning Spring Border designed to look its best from Spring through to Summer and the majestic Walled Garden is planted in a pretty cottage garden style which will be billowing with summer blooms. Don’t miss a walk through the water gardens where in May and June the Iris Dell will be brimming with irises. The Wetlands is well worth the walk. Wild play spaces are interspersed throughout Wakehurst and children will particularly adore Tree Trunk Trek in Coates Wood. Here are some key moments in the history of The Castle: 1067: William the Conqueror gives the order for Arundel Castle to be built. His kinsman Roger de Montgomery locates the Castle on the River Arun in an easily defensible position. 1068: Initial construction of the Castle begins, including the 100ft earthen motte that can still be seen today. 1643: A siege breaks out at the Castle during the English Civil War. 10,000 parliamentarians lay siege to the 1,000 royalists inside the Castle for 18 days, before finally capturing it, badly damaging the west side to prevent any future occupation. The ruins lay almost untouched until the 18th Century. 1875-1900: Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk, carries out a massive reconstruction of the Castle, fitting electric lighting and central heating, cutting edge technology at the time. The heating is still functional today! 1939-44: Arundel Castle is garrisoned by British, American and Commonwealth troops during WWII, playing a key role in the south coast defences up until D-Day in 1944. 1975: Bernard, the 16th Duke, begins a loving restoration of the Castle and a charitable trust is established to ensure it will be preserved long into the future. All profits from ticket sales are
put back into the maintenance and upkeep of the Castle and its historic contents. 2008: The Collector Earl’s Garden is officially opened by HRH the Prince of Wales. Located on the site of a former car park, the garden is now the jewel in the crown of more than 40 acres of gardens and grounds at Arundel Castle. This year also saw the first instalment of the, now widely-renowned, Jousting and Medieval Tournament at Arundel Castle. The competition, taking place from 23-28 July 2019, is the longest of its kind in the world.

On a glorious sunny day, with a fresh bag of chips in hand, there aren’t many better places to be than by the seaside enjoying a quintessential British family day out at the beach. The Herbaceous Border is its best know feature which is thought to be the first border of its kind planted in England. This along with the unique Quercus Ilex Columns, Pleached Lime Avenue of trees & the furlong walk make this simply the most amazing and interesting garden.
Within its eight acres of formal garden, which can take you several hours to meander around, there are many different areas, each with its own distinctive character. On the NE side of the house, beyond the Chapel is The Grove, a well established arboretum and a Woodland Walk of about 6 or 7 acre. The Grove has a pathway approx 1/3rd of a mile long & it will take you approx 30 minutes to walk around depending on your pace & interest in the planting, while the Woodland Walk is approx 1/5th of a mile long & will take you approx 15 minutes to walk, again depending on your pace. Arley was taken over by Birmingham gangsters in November 2015 after the BBC decided the hall would be the perfect home for Tommy Shelby in Series 3 of Peaky Blinders. Actors Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson & Joe Cole spent a month filming here. Oscar-nominated Hollywood star Tom Hardy also had a day on set. Broughton Castle is essentially a family home lived in by Lord and Lady Saye and Sele and their family. The original medieval manor house was built in about 1300 by Sir John de Broughton and stands on an island site surrounded by a moat. The castle was greatly enlarged between 1550 and 1600, at which time it was embellished with magnificent plaster ceilings and fine fireplaces.

Bressingham has been the official home to the Dads Army Appreciation Society’s collection since 2000.
The exhibition comprises a recreation of Walmington on Sea the fictional home to Captain Mainwaring and his men. The Church Hall, where we show episodes the Bressingham collection is featured in, Captain Mainwaring’s office – here you can try on Home Guard uniforms. Along the street there is Jones’ Butchers shop, Swallow Bank, Frasers Funeral parlour as well as Walmington on Sea Post Office, a printers and Toy Shop. Bressingham was happy to lend to the BBC some of its historic collection to feature in the show, Traction Engines and Rollers feature in episodes but probably the most memorable exhibit in the Bressingham collection is the Fire Engine. You can also see the staff car Pike took his girl to the pictures in, Jones’ Butchers Van and the town dustcart – both as featured in the feature film of the 1970s.

Who can forget the inimitable characters played by Clive Dunn, Arthur Lowe, John Laurie, John Le Mesurier, Jim Beck, Ian Lavender, Arnold Ridley, Frank Williams, Edward Sinclair and Bill Pertwee! Not only did the show make household names of these main characters, but it also brought a host of other ‘comedy faces’ to our television screens for the very first time. The series was filmed in and around Thetford (including the Stanford training area) and included many local residents from the surrounding countryside. The release of the 2016 Feature Film only goes to show how the show has lived on un the minds of the public, and is always ready to gently amuse the young and the old of every generation. The Dads Army exhibition is housed amongst the steam exhibits of road and rail at Bressingham alongside 18 acres of stunning Bloom family gardens.
The Television Series ‘Dad’s Army’ ran from 1968 to 1977 with a total of 80 episodes - and you can still catch the repeats to this

Where the Past Passes By..... Here you can see a unique project; the creation of a museum of street transport designed to show the development of mechanical transport over the best part of a century. The essence of transport is movement, so we are building a living museum where vehicles of yesteryear can be seen in action, where half-forgotten sounds of the past are brought back to life and where visitors can journey back in time by travelling on a few of the exhibits along the Museum’s streets. Many old vehicles seem ill at ease in a rural environment, so our aim is to develop a street scene of houses and shops, complete with authentic street furniture of bygone days, rescued by us from many parts of the country. At Carlton Colville we have one of the widest ranges of preserved vehicles of any museum, and further exhibits are still accepted from time to time, although restrictions on covered accommodation necessarily confine these mainly to items of local or specific historic interest. Our story began back in 1962 when four local tramway enthusiasts rescued the body of an old Lowestoft tramcar, no. 14, from its use as a summerhouse at Gunton. From this grew the idea of forming a transport museum, and as a result the East Anglia Transport Museum was founded on its present site in 1965. A Society was formed with the object of developing and running the Museum and started off with a few old vehicles which had been either donated or loaned, but with no other assets whatsoever. The huge task lay ahead of transforming a disused meadow,into a museum with depots, stores, workshops, administrative offices, refreshment facilities and toilets, not forgetting roads, tram tracks, overhead wiring for trams

and trolleybuses, and a light railway. The Museum is fully registered and has charitable status. Whilst it serves principally as a major tourist attraction in Waveney, great emphasis is also placed on its educational role. There is a chance to travel on types of vehicles now half forgotten, and you are free to wander around the Museum site or to take a stroll along our woodland path to the tram terminus at Hedley Grove. Other amenities include our shop, which is particularly well stocked with books and souvenirs, and the Terminus Tearooms where light refreshments are reasonably priced and ice cream and soft drinks are always available.
