Welcome to Hyndburn The vibrant town of Accrington lies in Hyndburn in the heart of Pennine Lancashire. It is East Lancashire’s best shopping district with fabulous independent boutiques, 21st century Arndale Shopping Centre and 19th century Victoria Market Hall, a grand Victorian building where market traders sell fresh Lancashire produce. Bargain hunters should pay a visit to nearby Oswaldtwistle Mills, housed in five former weaving sheds, which has over 80 discount outlets. Explore Accrington town centre on the Accrington Acorn Trail, which takes you from the magnificent Town Hall, built in 1858 at the height of Accrington’s textiles success, along Willow Street with its imposing houses and past Carnegie Library to the oldest part of town, along Warner Street. No visit to Accrington is complete without exploring its picturesque surrounding countryside. Serious walkers will revel in the 31-mile circular Hyndburn Clog, which passes through remarkably diverse countryside including moorland and lowland and offers spectacular views of the scenic Hill Country. But if you just fancy a short stroll, the walk is broken down into seven manageable stages! Or try Canal Clog which connects parts of the Hyndburn Clog with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath.?

DISCOVER & WEST LANCASHIRE GINGERBREAD

EVENTS

Where do you think of when you think of Gingerbread? Ormskirk may not spring to mind. However whilst a well-known place for Gingerbread in the UK began their production in 1854, Ormskirk Gingerbread had already been produced for over a hundred years prior, since 1732! Founded by the Fyles family, this gingerbread was later patronised by King Edward VI.

Throughout the year you’ll find a number of exciting family-friendly events including Medieval Festival in May, Ormskirk Gingerbread Festival in July, and Motorfest in August; all of which attract visitors from near and far to Ormskirk.

It seems that King Edward’s were drawn to Ormskirk, with its traditional outdoor market granted it’s Royal Charter in 1286 by King Edward I. Today, Ormskirk Market continues to thrive, trading twice weekly every Thursday and Saturday, with stalls aplenty, it is renowned for being one of the UK’s oldest and most traditional outdoor markets. As well as fresh artisan breads, homemade pies, olives, fine cheeses, and fresh local produce including fish, meat and vegetables you’ll also find a modern twist on Ormskirk Gingerbread and also a variety of other traditional market goods.

SHOPPING & FOOD Ormskirk and West Lancashire are proud to have a large number of unique and wonderful independent businesses. There is a wealth of wonderful people that make the area so friendly. Explore them in person and uncover some hidden gems here ready for your next visit. As well as Ormskirk why not visit the historic Burscough Wharf, in its attractive canal-side setting, for an alternative shopping and leisure experience. It’s not surprising with such fabulous produce on the doorstep that West Lancashire is home to a wealth of delicious cafés and restaurants. You can explore them in Ormskirk town centre and uncover even more throughout this wonderful rural Borough. Moor Hall, Aughton is Lancashire’s only 2 Michelin starred restaurant with rooms. Set in an idyllic setting, enjoy the delicate, produce driven menus inspired by exceptional surroundings and talented chef patron Mark Birchall.

Why not explore somewhere different? Discover Ormskirk and West Lancashire DISCOVERORMSKIRK.COM

Christmas 2019 sees Ormskirk’s Christmas of Tales take centre stage with fairytales and festivities in the town on Sunday November 24th. Further afield, Beacon Country Park plays host to the Green Fayre in July, West Lancashire’s biggest countryside event, which is free for all the family to enjoy.

ATTRACTIONS Follow in the footsteps of local Tudors with a visit to National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall and gardens. Rumour has it that Shakespeare spent his youth here, why not ask for the evidence and decide for yourself. Or step back in time to the age of the steam train, with a visit to the volunteer run West Lancashire Light Railway. WWT Martin Mere is a wetland nature reserve. With more than 100 types of rare and endangered water-birds to hand feed, plus a family of enchanting otters, a white stork enclosure with daily talks and feeds and much more. Enjoy a day with farm animals at two of West Lancashire’s fabulous attractions. Farmer Ted’s Adventure Farm, a family attraction with, ponies, birds of prey, go-karts, soft play and restaurant. Or Windmill Animal Farm with train rides, play areas, pedal tractors, picnic spots and coffee shop. For those seeking arts and culture, step inside Ormskirk’s own Chapel Gallery which plays host to a wealth of exhibitions including the work of international, national and regional artists as well as numerous activities for adults and children alike.

Explore all the fascinating nooks and crannies of the Hall, or take an entertaining tour with Janey the Witch, or King Henry VII, who bring the historic rooms to life. Entry is completely free, for all ages to enjoy! Stay for lunch in the award winning Billiard Room Restaurant, or treat yourself to freshly baked waffles and ice cream at Dottie’s. All food is locally sourced and prepared daily for your enjoyment. The Mayflower playground, complete with its own miniature Samlesbury Hall, is perfect for little ones.. or follow the fairy door trail! Taste Samlesbury‘s own honey and visit the bees that helped make it, in the Hall’s own Bee Centre. Spend a cosy night by the fire pit in the Shepherd’s Hut Hamlet, surrounded by gorgeous festoon-lit woodland. This is Glamping at its very best! Explore Pendle

Why is Pendle, in Lancashire, so be-witching? Well it could be the boat trips along the legendary Leeds & Liverpool Canal, or the tales of famous witches, recounted in the most dramatic of styles by top-hatted guide, Simon Entwistle. Both perfect for families and although it has some stunning countyside, it is well-linked into to the road network. Simon is a long time favourite of everyone that meets him. He says: “I love showing people that there’s more to Lancashire than mill chimneys and clogs. I do ghost walks and Pendle Witch tours and a tour of Colne, all rooted in our fascinating history. The Pendle Heritage Centre is one of the favourite parts of my tours and the start of the Pendle Witches Trail” Martin, who runs boat trips on the well-equipped Marton Emperor, is equally enthusiastic about the area. He told us: “Foulridge Wharf, where the boat is moored, is steeped in history. It’s a quiet way to travel and we see a lot of wildlife on our trips, including kingfishers, swans and water voles. One of the cruises we do passes the old Lancashire/Yorkshire border. In the other direction we go through the feat of engineering known as the Foluridge Tunnel.” The area is also known for its great events, like the UK’s largest free walking festival, the Pendle Cycling Festival, and the multi awardwinning Blues Festival in Colne. Other things to do/Places to eat: Bancroft Mill - One of the last working mill engines in the County. Look out for its Steaming Days. Prestige Karting – for families and the young at heart - drive one of the best tracks in the County. Boundary Mill – a shopping extravaganza! One of the biggest and best outlets in the North, also features Banny’s classy fish & chips restaurant. Pendle Witch Experience Bus Tours and David Johns Tours. Pendle Sculpture Trail – ideal for some education – guess which witch is which? We also cater for walkers and cyclists with lots of great walks!
