STACK EFFECT: OPENINGS AT LOWER LEVELS ARE LARGE AND NUMEROUS; THEY RESTRICT AS THEY PROGRESS UPWARDS, AND THE TOP LEVEL HAS A CENTRAL OPENING FOR EXHAUST DAYLIGHTING: MAINTAINING A GLASS FLOOR FOR THE PASSAGES ALLOWS FOR AMPLE DAYLIGHTING

CULTURAL ASPECT

THE FORM OF THE BOTTOM LEVEL IS ENTIRELY DECIDED BASED UPON THE SURROUNDING INFLUENCES ON THE BY TURNING THIS LEVEL INTO A KIND OF FILTER FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRANSITION AND ACTIVITY, IT BECOMES A MEETING POINT - A CENTRAL HUB, A LOCUS - REMOVED ENOUGH FROM MAIN STREET TO MAINTAIN THE SPEED OF TRANSPORT BUT CLOSE ENOUGH TO BECOME AN EXTENSION OF ITS ACTIVITY. SITE, FROM PUBLIC ACCESS TO VISUAL CUES.

INTERNAL LOGIC

LEVELS ARE SPLIT AND DIVIDED INTO DIFFERENT BLOCKS BASED ON INFLUENCING FACTORS: 1ST - BUS, WORKERS, SHOPPERS, WALKERS, DRIVERS, MEANDERERS (FARMER’S MARKETERS, SUNDAY STROLLERS, DRUNKARDS), TRUCKS, SUPERMARKET ZONING 2ND/3RD - DAYLIGHT, AIR, VISUAL CUT-THROUGHS, OFFICE CIRCULATION 3RD - OFFICE CIRCULATION BLOCK DIVISIONS COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME ZONES; LEVEL SPLITS BECOME ORGANIZING ELEMENTS FOR

ORIENTATION: THE OFFICE BLOCKS ARE ORIENTED EAST-WEST, ALLOWING FOR MAXIMUM CONTROL OF

PROPER LIGHTING

DAYLIGHTING: CUTTING THE “CANYON” INTO THE FORM ALLOWS PLENTY OF DIRECT AND REFLECTED LIGHT DOWN INTO EACH SPACE; NEVER IS THERE A POINT IN THE VOLUME THAT IS TOO FAR FROM AN EXPOSED SURFACE. SHADING: STAGGERING THE LEVELS ALLOWS FOR NATURAL SUMMERTIME SHADE, WITHOUT RESTRICTING WINTERTIME EXPOSURE

VENTILATION: DIVIDING UP THE FORM MAXIMIZES THE SURFACE AREA, ALLOWING FOR MORE WIND-DRIVEN COOLING

CULTURAL ASPECT

V.4

DESPITE BEING SO CLOSE TO MAIN STREET, THE SITE SEEMS TO SUFFER FROMA LACK OF ACTIVITY; IT IS THE BUILDING BEGINS TO PRESENT A VERTICAL FACE AT THE STREET EDGE, BREAKING UP THE OPENNESS AND ENCOURAGING FURTHER DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER, THE FORM’S OPENINGS AND STEPS MEDIATE THIS FACE, SINCE A SOLID BLOCK ON THE CORNER MIGHT PROVE TOO CONTRASTINGLY DENSE. OPEN AND DESOLATE.

INTERNAL LOGIC

THE OFFICE BLOCKS ARE EAST-WEST STRIPS; ASSUMING THAT MULTIPLE OFFICES MIGHT BE NEEDED BY ONE COMPANY, THIS GROUPING PROVIDES A SECONDARY LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION. THE LARGER BLOCK ON THE EASTERN SIDE ALLOWS FOR CONNECTION AND COMMUNICATION, BECOMING AN ORGANIZING ELEMENT TO THE BRANCHES.

SUN: GENERAL-FORM BLOCKS ARE TRIMMED AND CUT TO PERMIT LOW-ANGLE LIGHT DURING THE WINTER MONTHS WHILE PROVIDING AN ADEQUATELY SHADED PLAZA IN THE SUMMER

WIND: OPENINGS IN THE PERIMETER OF THE SITE ALLOW NORTH-SOUTH SUMMER WINDS BUT BLOCK THE ENTRANCE OF NORTHWEST-SOUTHEAST WINTER WINDS LANDSCAPE: THE EXISTING TREES ON THE SITE ARE FOR THE PASSAGE OF

UTILIZED FOR SHADE AND WIND PROTECTION

CULTURAL ASPECT

THE INTRODUCTION OF A SUPERMARKET INTO THE AREA FARMER’S MARKET. IN ORDER TO AVOID THIS, THE SUPERMARKET IS PULLED BACK FROM THE CORNER, AND A PUBLIC PLAZA IS CREATED THAT HAS EVERY POSSIBILITY TO COMPETE WITH THE NEARBY

ACTS AS AN EXTENSION OF THE SUPERMARKET AND AN INVITATION FOR LOCAL ACTIVITY.

INTERNAL LOGIC

RATHER THAN CREATING ONE GIANT BLOCK, THE BUILDINGS ARE SPLIT INTO SEPARATE PIECES, ALLOWING A VARIETY OF ORGANIZATIONS AND LAYOUTS AND ENCOURAGING ACTIVITY AND INTERACTION.

THE PATHWAYS AND CUTBACKS BECOME MEETING SPACES AND COURTYARDS; THE BUILDING BECOMES A PUBLIC COMPLEX.
