In 1994, Lynton Lasers Ltd was formed by a group of PhD physicists working at The University of Manchester. During the development of one of the world’s first Q-switched tattoo removal lasers, the team noticed the exciting applications of the technology for aesthetic and medical practitioners. What followed was the launch of the world’s only Aesthetic laser company to be formed from an academic facility university.
Managing Director, Jon Exley explains that their IPL technology was also developed when he was asked to do a PhD at the Physics department at Manchester. “The PhD was to consider whether we could treat skin lesions with a broadband light source instead of laser, which was traditional at the time. And so, I studied for four years and investigated how light interacts with tissue and how we can treat different things with a flashlamp based device. That was the start of IPL for Lynton and was in fact, one of the first IPL devices ever developed globally and the only IPL that has come from a real academic institution. There have been commercial developments since then of course and our IPL has got better and better over the years, but the technology was founded on that academic research”.

Dr Charlton graduated with a first-class degree in Physics and a PhD in Laser Physics from the Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford, prior to taking a NATO fellowship at the University of Colorado’s Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics. In 1989 Dr Charlton moved to the University of Manchester where he spent five years researching medical applications of Erbium, Holmium, Nd:YAG, and Pulsed Dye Lasers.
This expertise led him to found Lynton Lasers in 1994, and bring the first Q-switched Nd:YAG aesthetic lasers and IPL systems to the UK market.
Dr Exley’s interest in lasers began whilst studying physics both at the University of Leeds (UK) and the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble (France). Following graduation with a first-class honours degree; he joined one of the UK’s leading medical laser research centres at the University of Manchester to undertake a PhD research project sponsored by Lynton, where he developed one of the world’s first IPL devices. Today, Dr Exley is actively involved with wider industry matters and has recently been appointed to the External Advisory Board for the University Of Manchester Dept. Of Physics and holds the position of Honorary Secretary of the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA).
Before joining Lynton, Dr Hills completed a first degree in Physics, followed by a PhD in Physics and Pharmaceutical Sciences, working in the field of light-responsive drug delivery. Dr Hills joined Lynton as a Clinical Specialist in 2002. She is the author and main lecturer of the industry-leading Lynton / University of Manchester Skin Laser courses and has been asked to contribute to a number of books on laser and light treatments.
In 2017 Dr Hills was appointed an honorary lecturer in the Department of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences at the University of Manchester, in recognition for her ongoing contribution to the University of Manchester’s ‘Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine’ MSc course. She is the laser/IPL Expert for BABTAC and is on the training faculty for the British Medical Laser Association. She has published more than 30 papers in a variety of highly regarded medical and scientific journals.

When choosing any piece of equipment for your business, the two most important factors to consider are efficacy and return on investment. No matter what the cost of a device, if it fails to achieve the results your clients expect it won’t add value to the business. Alternatively, a device that generates amazing results but comes with an exorbitant price tag makes it almost impossible to run at a profit. A truly effective IPL device is defined by three main considerations: Wavelength, Fluence and Pulse Duration. It isn’t enough to meet just one or two of these criteria, to ensure maximum results all three factors are required to be at the optimum levels.
While choosing the correct wavelength for a particular treatment is important, it is also critical to have control of how the light is delivered into the skin. This is determined by the fluence (power) of the device and it’s the ability to manipulate the pulse duration and thermal relaxation times that ultimately determines the success of your results on a range of treatments. For example, removing a thin vein or a fine, lighter colour hair requires a very short pulse duration, ideally a train of sub-millisecond pulses. Alternatively, targeting a thick, dark hair requires a longer pulse duration. Lynton’s proprietarty Dynamic Reflex Technology provide full control of Wavelength, Fluence, Pulse Duration and thermal relaxation time. Extensive research has also shown that a lack of control of pulse duration and thermal relaxation time limits the ability to clear certain targets and therefore meet the expectations of your clients.
Most IPLs don’t operate in this way - the standard competitor device uses only two pulses that are fixed and unable to pulse below 4 milliseconds. They also lack the ability to manipulate the thermal relaxation time between pulses which severely limits the kind of results these devices can achieve.
