Certificate in School Management and Leadership A joint program of the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and Harvard Business School (HBS)
CSML OVERVIEW The Certificate in School Management and Leadership is designed to provide K–12 school leaders at all stages of their careers with leadership and management frameworks, skills, and knowledge to drive change and lead high-performing schools. CSML will comprise four distinct yet interrelated courses, which may be taken individually or completed together to earn a comprehensive certificate. Together, these courses address topics most vital to leading successful schools: • Leading Change • Leading Schools

ABOUT LEADING SCHOOLS: A CSML COURSE Offered as the second course within the Certificate in School Management and Leadership (CSML), Leading Schools will focus on these essentials for driving school improvement: • Vision and Goal Setting: Define and refine school goals and vision, and how to guide the implementation of changes to improve performance. • Root Cause Analysis: Identify gaps between current and desired performance and diagnose root causes of those gaps. • Organizational Alignment: Explore the organizational building blocks of schools, understand how they work together as an inter-related system, and learn how to generate greater alignment between the school's strategy, its building blocks, and its resources. • Innovation: Distinguish between continuous improvement and innovation, identify when innovation is needed, and create a safe space for innovation to take place.
UPCOMING COURSE DATES • Leading Schools: October 16 – November 13, 2019 • Leading Change: January 22 – February 19, 2020 • Leading Schools: January 22 – February 19, 2020

This innovative platform engages participants in a transformative, peer-to-peer learning experience through which they will connect with faculty members from HGSE, HBS, and other Harvard schools, principals and educators from across the United States, and leaders in fields outside of education. All learning materials will be provided through the platform.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS ARE SAYING “ The biggest benefit of this program is that I can immediately apply the learnings to my work on a daily basis. I’ve participated in a lot of professional development, but this is the one I keep coming back to. We’re going through a big culture and district change and CSML has given me the knowledge and reflective space that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.” — Jamie Flynn, Principal, A.C. Whelan Elementary School, Revere, Massachusetts
