elcome to our latest edition of Professional Player. I would firstly like to welcome our new partners of Dakota Deluxe Hotel in Leeds. This is a stylish and luxurious hotel that Professional Player will be using extensively in 2017/18 for all our meetings and events. It already hosts filming for TV programmes as well as many stars from the music industry staying there when they are performing at the Leeds Arena. I also want to introduce Players Cars a company established for over ten years supplying cars to the rich and famous in the Sports and Music industry. Mark Bird the founder is a down to earth business man who knows the industry inside out and provides a service to you the players with a customer service record unrivaled within this industry. Oakrights the house builder have joined PP again with a unique product that is as energy efficient as you can find today. The experience from the owner Tim to the design and production staff is nothing short of amazing. Take a look you will not be disappointed. So the season is well under way. We are now approaching the time when the first ten games have been played which is always the point and time when you can see where you are in your league and maybe, how your season will shape up? We believe at Professional Player that the leagues are continuing to bring exciting football and the fans are showing this by the numbers watching the games despite the hug coverage on TV. With the new Sky deal for the EFL just being announced and more football outside the Premier League now available, the future again looks very bright for our national game. Our main feature is all about Neymar did this really happen £200m? When Ronaldo and Bale were sold for £90m ish people said that will not be beaten but come on £200m? Surely this cannot keep rising. However I believe it will with the very rich owners of some of the teams in Europe continuing to put money into the clubs it is not all about the balance sheet these days but who is prepared to spend more and more money. Can you someone please inform us about ‘The UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations (FFP)’ which was established to prevent professional football clubs spending more than they earn in the pursuit of success and in doing so getting into financial problems which might threaten their long-term survival. Is this really being adhered to... Mmmm don’t think so do you?

Tattoo Fixers has been a huge TV smash, and integral to the popularity of the show is tattoo artist and ‘fixer’ Jay Hutton, who spoke to Anthony Bunn about growing up in North Wales, his art, and righting wrongs

Visit: theprofessionalplayer.co.uk

Exclusive Jay Hutton

“ attoos should be hugely personal things. You’re literally putting your body in someone else’s hands, and it’s not something to be taken lightly. That’s at the core of everything I do”. I’m sat in the reception of Jay Hutton’s tattoo studio in Cheshire, less than forty five minutes’ drive from where Jay grew up, in Abergele, a small town in North Wales. Throughout our conversation it’s clear that he is very bright and articulate, but also has his client’s best interests and the reputation of tattooing at the heart of everything he does. As someone who has no knowledge of this world, it’s not only educational, but also refreshing to see someone who not only loves their work but has a very moral and ethical outlook on it, too. »

15

Jay’s own studio, Adrenaline Tattoo Studio in Ellesmere Port, has been well established for several years now, and it’s a family affair as his brother, Danny, works there with him. They have a waiting list and a reputation that’s second-to-none. I asked Jay, what makes a great tattooist?

So how did Jay get into tattooing? Was he into art at school? “Yes, I was always interested in art as a kid”, comments the impeccably-groomed and chatty 27 year old before continuing, “Throughout school I drew. I just wanted to draw. I used to draw portraits of footballers since I was about nine years old, and developed my styles from there. At the age of around 15, I went out and got a job and stopped drawing for a short time, but I then saw a TV programme called Miami Ink, and it made me want to draw again”. It awakened in Jay a deep interest in the world of tattoos, and one that would eventually turn into not only a job, but a vocation. So how did the lad from North Wales go from his love of art to becoming a tattooist? “When I left school, I didn’t have a career in mind, and went on to sixth form college. I had a few jobs that I hated and thought this isn’t for me. As I said before, I started watching Miami Ink and my brother started getting some tattoos, too. He’s three years older than me, and it was this that made me want to get into tattoos” After gaining an apprenticeship, Jay’s first boss told him that if he was serious about being a tattoo artist then he needed to get a tattoo himself and experience how a tattoo feels…….something that Jay realised that he had to do. “I suppose that it was basically me giving my own skin over to my art. I was 18, so, I tattooed myself – my first tattoo is on my leg, of a laughing clown”.

16

Visit: theprofessionalplayer.co.uk

IT’S A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY, BUT ALSO A HUGE BUZZ TO SEE PEOPLE LOVING YOUR WORK, TOO.”

This rite of tattooing passage was soon followed by other tattoos which the modest Jay admits himself “aren’t the best, but they helped me to learn, get better and be what I am today. I’ve no regrets on using myself as a kind of tattooing guinea pig”. Jay Hutton’s first ever tattoo on someone else was when a friend’s brother wanted “a tribal tattoo covered by a Polynesian tattoo. It took six hours, whereas nowadays the same thing would probably only take an hour!”. It’s clear throughout our chat, that Jay appreciates all forms of art, even admitting to trying his hand out – quite literally – as a graffiti artist himself (“Yes, I certainly appreciate the skill and dedication needed to be an artist in any format”).

“For me, it’s about customer service. You must never forget what kind of service you are offering to people, and what a tattoo can mean to them. It’s a huge responsibility, but also a huge buzz to see people loving your work, too. My job is to make people feel comfortable. Some people work themselves up about the pain, the process and stuff like that, so you need to be very personable. Oh, and being really good at your art too of course, ha, ha! It’s not easy being a tattoo artist, and the process is completely different to drawing, but I do think that you have to be a cracking artist to do it.” Jay talks regularly about the ‘process’ of having a tattoo. What does he mean by this term? “It’s all about preparation – for both me and my customer. I have a duty and responsibility to be responsible. Having a tattoo is, and should be, a big decision, and it’s not something that should be rushed into, in my opinion. He continues, “Every customer is an individual. I want them to try and get them not to copy and be unique

Exclusive Jay Hutton

I TATTOOED A PORTRAIT OF MIKE TYSON ON MY BROTHER AND TWEETED IT OUT, AND IT WENT A BIT BALLISTIC FROM THERE – ESPECIALLY WHEN MIKE TYSON SAW IT!” and individual, as I feel that if tattoos mean something to you you’re more likely to always want to keep them. So, we have discussions on what customers really want and try to ensure that they are comfortable with what they want. We often talk at length and then I possibly even say go away and really think about it. Perhaps the minimum age of getting one should be increased? I think that might be a good idea. You’ve got to remember that levels of maturity differ and so I’d possibly raise the age when you can get one.” It’s obvious talking to him that Jay Hutton is the ultimate professional. And through E4’s Tattoo Fixers and his corrective work at Adrenaline, he obviously has immense firsthand experience of the aftermath of mistakes and rushed decisions. Indeed, Jay’s studio was open for six years before the call came from Tattoo Fixers. So, how did it come about being asked to appear on the show? “I felt that I needed to do something to separate my studio from the rest. I tattooed a portrait of Mike Tyson on my brother and tweeted it out, and it went a bit ballistic from there – especially when Mike Tyson saw it! We then started using social media really positively and it got my work out there, and I got a few celebs coming in and getting tattoos, such as Kerry Katona and Jay from Geordie Shore. It was great, as not only me, but Adrenaline got great exposure and plaudits, too. Through this higher profile, the studio contacted me to audition for Tattoo Fixers. I’d been doing cover-ups throughout my career, and thought it would be cool and a great for profile of Adrenaline. Jay and fellow cast and crew members film for a few months at a time in London, and he lives there whilst this is taking place before returning to his own tattoo studio. He admits that life and work is “busy, busy, but Adrenaline is doing really well, as my brother

is doing a great job. He’s adapted his own style – and I think we complement each other really well.” So, would Jay Hutton watch Tattoo Fixers if he wasn’t in it? “Ha, ha, good question. Truthfully, yes I would. I think that the show is great. I think it’s main purpose is to show that you should think before you get a tattoo. Make sure you get a good one, rather than getting a bad one to be eventually replaced by a good one. It’s not always that simple to get a bad tattoo fixed and hopefully the show highlights this.” Jay has recently finished Tattoo Fixers on Holiday where the gang went out to Spain for a few weeks and set up a pop-up shop. As you’ll know, inking errors can often happen overseas with people on their holidays, and he has his own opinions on what happens when some Brits head to sunnier, summer climes. “The week or two you are abroad is lived in such a bubble. It’s almost totally divorced from reality and the norm”, states the genial North Walian, before adding, “People don’t see having a tattoo as forever until reality kicks in when they get home. Lasering then may come into play, but that isn’t nice at all.” Jay hasn’t managed to tattoo any footballers yet (“But I’d love to do so – get in touch, folks!”) but is big mates with Liverpool’s Danny Ings, and would also love to work with Connor McGregor (“I’m a massive fan of his”), but no matter who comes through Adrenaline’s front door he admits that he “is honoured that people come to us – especially when their tattoos have deep meanings or are portraits.” Just before the chat finishes I ask Jay what does he thinks he’ll look like as a pensioner, covered in tattoos... “Ha, ha... I’ll have too many other things to worry about at that age to be honest! My tattoos will be the last things on my mind!!!”

BE THE NEXT ICON THE WORLDS MOST ADVANCED FOOTBALL TRAINING AID 24

E

ddie Mitchell, the former AFCB Chairman has officially been granted a patent for his invention the ICON football arena. The ICON, which is pioneering football training and development, has a unique circular design designed to create repetition. In only 60 seconds of play players can reach up to 80 touches working on drills which test their ability. Light sequences are programmed into the arena to create training exercises which are both beneficial and enjoyable for players. After 3 years of scrutiny, last week saw the granting of ESA Football’s patent application, protecting the invention which is now located in three continents and has generated sales of over 30 units. The product is currently in use by professional clubs across Europe including Barcelona, Liverpool and Southampton. Eddie made the following comments on the invention, “The idea stemmed from my desire since leaving AFCB to stay involved with football. I dreamt up the invention. At ESA Football, we are watching coaches around the world experience the ICON and the benefits it can bring through regular use. It’s exciting to see it slowly becoming the norm in football training. We recently celebrated the 2 millionth meaningful touch of the football using our ICON arenas, which is fantastic in the short space of time it has been around.”

Interview

Why we should all l ve

Kevin Pietersen He’s England’s most gifted Batsman, he helped bring the Ashes back to England, he’s never afraid to stand up for what he believes in, he’s mates with Ernie Els and Frank Lampard, and he’s helping to protect one of the most endangered animals on the planet… although he admits his favourite TV show is Love Island. David Fearnhead meets the enigma that is Kevin Pietersen

T

he dictionary definition of the word Maverick is an unorthodox or independent-minded person. It’s a word which frequently attaches itself to Kevin Pietersen. Pietersen is amongst the very best of English batsmen, some would even say the best. Unlike many of his predecessors his game is not built around stoically camping out at the crease for days on end. He is an aggressive run scorer.

28

Visit: theprofessionalplayer.co.uk

In his armoury is every known cricketing shot with a few more he invented himself. The blazer boys who run a game mired in tradition may not have liked his independent spirit, but Pietersen is one of those rare players who can get even non-cricket fans excited about the game. When I spoke to him for Professional Player I found him engaging, entertaining, and honest. He is a maverick in a sport which desperately needs more of them.

England In 2005 England claimed the Ashes for the first time in nearly two decades. The nation was gripped by cricket in a way never seen before or since. “It was on terrestrial television which really helped,” says Pietersen, who doesn’t play up his part in that momentous series. “2005 was absolutely fantastic. It was amazing, the team mates, the buddies - the camaraderie was very special.”

Kevin Pietersen

PHOTO: THEO COHEN WWW.THEOCOHEN.CO.UK

prolific batsman England have ever had, but you do wonder what might have been had he been truly embraced by the cricketing establishment. “It is what it is,” says Pietersen. “You just deal with it in this country. There’s nothing you can do about it. You’re never going to change the culture, you’ve just got to accept it. It can be frustrating at times.” At 6’4” he’s a big target, but when was the last time a wallflower ever achieved anything in sport. Pietersen’s self-confidence has seen him labeled as arrogant. Ask him a question and he’ll give you an honest answer, not just trot out the same coached answers that many players rely on. “I think you’ve got to be the person that you are. Don’t try to be somebody else that you are not because that will only make you super unhappy,” is his advice for any footballers who may find themselves in a similar situation.

The key to success over a long period of time in sport is expecting failure and understanding that failure will happen.” His comments bear a poignancy when you look at how he was later treated by England. The petty inner clique that took root in later England sides resulted in the shameful episode of creating a fake twitter account in an attempt to publicly humiliate Pietersen. Pietersen rightly fought back, a media storm whirled, but in essence he was just an unnaturally gifted cricket who wanted to play at the highest level. Singled-out for being different, and having an opinion that differed from that of England’s inner circle. Pietersen was seemingly handed a lifeline back into the side if he played country cricket, but it turned out to be a false promise. “He’s been misled and mistreated,” said Michael Vaughan, his former captain during that first ashes win. “He’s done everything that was asked of him, but taken down a path that was a dead end.” Vaughan is on record as saying Pietersen, “could be a pain in the backside, but he could also win matches for you against the world’s best. You don’t just bin someone like that.” That’s not to say Pietersen’s England career has been a disappointment. Far from it. He is still the most

Success “The key to success over a long period of time in sport is expecting failure and understanding that failure will happen. If you start fighting failure and fighting against something which is a human trait, and will happen in any walk of life, you’re never going to do well all the time. Give your best, absolutely, but you are never guaranteed success. If you are going to start fighting against bad form then you are just going get yourself in a downward spiral. Don’t fight failure, accept it. Deal with it and you’ll get out of it a lot quicker.” In contrast to football, cricket hasn’t exploded since leaving terrestrial television. Falling interest combined with a ruling body who are reluctant to make changes has seen the game struggling to keep fans and recruit new ones.

“If you are going to play follow my leader and just be a sheep all the time, and thats what people have done for many years, then you are going to lose followers,” says Pietersen. “There are so many other things pulling people away from cricket. You need to innovative and entertain.” He’s a fan of making Test matches four-day games to force sides to chase runs. “Day three of the last test between England and South Africa was appalling. It was just a blockathon until the tail-enders came in and knocked it about a bit.” As football’s fortunes have increased so too has the professionalism in the game. Something Pietersen has witnessed first hand after doing his rehab with Chelsea. “It’s quite ridiculous really, and I mean that in a positive way. These guys are treated super, super, well. You look at the difference with cricketers. Cricketers just turn up and play. They eat what they want, they do what they want. Footballers are in the training ground, they’ve got their medication, they’ve got their drinks, they’ve got boots, they’ve got everything in the place. Properly mollycoddled to be super professional. Cricketers just muck in and do what they need to do, totally different really.” So would he swap his cricket career for one in football? “No. Golf,” comes the instant response. “I love it. It never drives me crazy because I know I’m never going to earn any money out of it,” says Pietersen, who currently plays off 6. Follow him on twitter (@KP24) and you’ll see he does all right when it comes to winning money at golf.

Golf To say golf is somewhat of an obsession is putting it mildly. His home is literally on a golf course, and not just any golf course but one of the game’s finest. “Yes, I live at Wentworth. It’s my home club and I absolutely love that club. It’s a beautiful family environment which is key to as why we are members there. The upgrades they’ve made to the West Course have been nothing short of spectacular.” ››

29

Interview Kevin Pietersen

“Ernie Els is a good buddy of mine, we live close to each other here. I love playing with him. I love watching him, I love his tempo, but then I’ve been lucky to play with a lot of good professionals around the world. Their ball-striking and their tempo are just things I wish I had.” Golf appears to have filled that competitive void after test cricket. His personality is one of total dedication. The hours in the practice nets have been replaced by hours on the driving range as he seeks an unobtainable perfection, and yet he does so knowing it’s unobtainable. “You can never always hit the perfect shot. Golf is about how you deal with that failure – and failure can happen three times on one hole. You can be super successful and have real good joyride for a couple of holes and then you can go down to being a Z-lister. Success might not happen in four hours, but then you might have a day where you play like an absolute champion. I think for me it’s dealing with the mental side of golf that I love. I’m fascinated by it. You’re testing yourself. You can’t blame anyone else. You might think you’ve hit the perfect shot, and then you get an unlucky bounce. It’s very, very, difficult to consistently hit the perfect shot.”

There is one passion that surpasses even golf for Pietersen, and that’s for conservation. He has been a vocal supporter and fundraiser for one species in particular - the Rhino. Remembering Rhinos, the Born Free Foundation, and Mark Boucher’s Legacy Charity called Rhino in Safe Hands have all received significant support from the cricketer. August also saw Pietersen play in a T20 Bash for Surrey against Yorkshire where part of the proceeds go directly to helping Rhinos. “It breaks my heart,” says Pietersen of the plight of the Rhino. “It’s greed, it’s ego, it’s destruction of a species which some people don’t care about and don’t have the education and knowledge to see what they are doing. The commodity is there, it’s being traded and it’s brutal so people need to raise their game for the protection of these animals or in 20 years’ time my kids’ kids may never see a rhino.” He’s a player who puts his money where in mouth is. Stunning many by donating his entire salary playing for Surrey to his own charitable foundation: www.kp24foundation.com A fact he’d forgotten and had to check with his PA when I brought it up. “I always feel the need to give back. I feel you get rewarded in other ways if you can help people, help animals, it just makes me feel better as a human. I like it to be under the radar, and it’s so under the radar that I’d forgotten about it.”

: Football

: Computer Games

Chelsea is my team. I did rehab with Chelsea on my achilles in 2007/08. I’m pretty tight mates with Lampard and he took me down there. I’ve been a big Chelsea supporter for a long time. It’s sad to see John Terry go, but time moves and you’ve got to move with it. Nice to see he’s found himself a little home up there with Aston Villa.

“My son goes into my man cave. I occasionally play FIFA against him but he’s too dirty. He cleans me out too many times. He doesn’t mind two red cards so long as he wins.”

: Alternative Job he’d hate

“To sit in an office and just look at a computer screen. That’s just not the way I was brought : Downtime up. Growing up in South “Just with my kids or playing Africa I was always outdoors, golf. Pretty simple really. I’m I could never sit in an office. not bad at golf, I’m off 6. I’d No matter what the job was, be a lot better if my driver whether it was an accountant listened to me. And also being a taxi driver being sat in traffic all : The Best Golf day. I hate traffic.”

Courses he’s played

“The courses in Melbourne on the sand belt are just ridiculously good. I play them every winter. I live at Wentworth. It’s my home club. Absolutely love that club. I’m also a member at Leopard Creek in South Africa.

: Film&TV “I’ve got a cinema room. That’s my baby for watching Love Island, but I’m not really a film man. I’m a conservationist. I’m a lover of animals, so Discovery channel, Animal Planet, National Geographic those are the ones that feature heavily for me.

: Music “I just listen to whatever’s going at the moment. I just go Top Hits on Spotify and off she goes.”

: Thing that most annoys him “Rudeness. I hate rudeness. I don’t like people who don’t say please or thank you. Adults or kids.”

: Sporting Event he’d most like to attend “You know that’s a very interesting question. I actually think watching sport on television is so good these days, that there is no better place to watch sport than at home. Especially golf. How do you watch a guy on hole 9, when you’re on another hole? On television you see all the best stuff up close and personal with no one else’s opinion but your own.”

DAWE POLICY He’s one of the most sought-after DJ’s in the country, but Nathan Dawe doesn’t just fill the dancefloor, he gets it rocking. Time and time again. Professional Player’s Anthony Bunn chatted to him about his formative years, his big break, Burton, meeting heroes, football, and why the likes of 50 Cent and Drake want to hire him!

Nathan Dawe

is everything, and Dawe is adored by his loyal clubbing fans, and with his Summer 2017 mix hitting 120,00 plays in its first 11 days, it’s no wonder that giants such as 50 Cent and Drake have sought to use Dawe’s services!! So, what makes a great night out for the clubbing cognoscenti? “For me, every night you have to entertain. None of my sets are ever planned – they’re all off the cuff. I might have a brief idea of what I will be playing, but I never have a set planned out. I’ll get my laptop out, but simply go with the crowd... I usually get a feeling after the first song what I think will rock that crowd, that night. It’s mentally tiring, as I can have 4 or 5 gigs in one night – I’ve got to perform in all of them and make sure every mix is perfect. My head is spinning at the end of night!” Perks of the job for down-to-earth, softly-spoken Dawe are flying his parents out to Zante last year for a gig on his tour (“I even gave them a shout out!”), meeting some of his Aston Villa heroes (“I’ve been a Villa fan all my life. Jack Grealish came up to me in a bar and said you’re Nathan Dawe, which was pretty cool! A lot of footballers are big into their DJ’s and vice versa”), and meeting one of his all-time musical heroes, Westwood (“Someone I’ve always looked up to, and he was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met”). Nathan Dawe is all about the here and now. But he admits his past is what has made him the person and DJ who sits across the table from me today, and the future looks amazingly bright, too – including another summer in Zante, and in his own words”... to continue loving what I do, keep growing, and being liked and successful.”

The Insurance Dilemma for Footballers

DON’T PAY MORE for Less

QUESTION: “Can I get a car insurance quote please?” ANSWER: (Cue the long intake of breath through gritted teeth…) “Hmmm… not sure we can help, but if we can it will be expensive…” WAIT! You are not asking a builder for an estimate, but have just asked for a car insurance quote from a standard insurer!

“It really doesn’t need to be this way…” The speaker is Darren Humphray, Board Director at Stackhouse Poland (and ex-apprentice footballer), who explains: “The lack of awareness of the quality insurance advice and cover available to players at Academy level to more seasoned pro’s is still alarming, particularly given the profile of the game and the players’ changing requirements.” Warming to his theme, he highlights the problem: “Whether players have just signed their first professional contract or have made the next move in their career, most mark the occasion with a special purchase or three!” “Often we are introduced to players, who are unaware of what is available to them. Many are reliant on either their parents or agents trying to navigate search engines” continues Darren.

Full insurance review “As part of our offering we undertake a review of the client’s insurance portfolio. It’s a no cost, no obligation service but it allows us to understand what makes them tick. We get to know their lifestyle and their buying habits and what they are looking for from their insurance cover.

“As soon as I say what I do for a living, my insurance premiums only go one way! ”

How much of an issue is this? “It is an issue for pretty much every client we meet, but undoubtedly it is more prevalent with younger players who are just starting out and for the first time have the ability to buy their first car, expensive watch or even a new home, but without the advisory infrastructure yet around them”. This approach, Darren argues: “often leaves players (of all levels) either poorly covered or significantly over paying for their car, home or valuables insurance, often without even knowing it”. Standard insurers and use of online quote engines rely on putting people into “pigeon-holes” and judging them all the same. Even with the increased media coverage of players and their lifestyles, this shouldn’t reduce the choices for academy and professional footballers. “We treat every client based on their own unique set of circumstances” Darren says. Counting current England Internationals and many premiership and championship footballers as clients, Stackhouse Poland provide quick and easy access to specialist insurers who “understand the individual’s lifestyle, meaning we are able to secure the right premium for the risk”. By choosing to not mass market their services and by only working on recommendations from professional services firms and luxury retailers, Stackhouse Poland has gained the reputation for those in the know as being the ‘go to’ insurance people for clients who want insurance solutions delivered quickly, discreetly and with the minimum of fuss. We are well versed in the challenges facing young, inexperienced or high profile clients who shouldn’t have to overpay to enjoy the peace of mind that knowing they are covered properly brings. ‘Key Cover Benefits’ are: · Worldwide cover for all your belongings · Agreed Car Value · Choice of Repairer · Prestige Courtesy Car

These reviews cover everything they own - property, fine art, jewellery and of course, cars and it helps Stackhouse Poland to put together an offer of portfolio cover. The key here is accurate and up to date valuations and they have access to several specialists working in various fields to ensure they have the most accurate market valuations. “There’s a huge issue in the industry of insurance, with items being undervalued which can cause problems when a claim is made.”

So, what has Stackhouse Poland got that others haven’t? The answer comes back instantly: “Service”. Darren expands: “We are not the cheapest out there nor are we the most expensive - but we do offer value for money and absolute peace of mind. The service we offer goes above and beyond.” That of course, is an easy claim to make but less easy to quantify. “I agree,” says Darren. “But that level of service immediately becomes apparent should you have to make a claim. You won’t be calling an 0800 number, but the direct number of me or one of the team. We are available 24/7 and we go beyond simply sorting a claim. If, for example, your house or car is broken into while you are out of the country, we make sure it’s made secure and deal with all the other problems that arise after a break-in.”

What advice would you give anyone when it comes to buying insurance? Simple. Speak to an expert and allow them the time initially to understand your needs and advise accordingly. The time invested will be worthwhile and could end up saving you a lot of unnecessary time, money and heartache should something go wrong. For further information, please contact Greg Bridges. As a leading private client insurance broker for over 15 years, Greg will offer a bespoke service and will specifically seek insurers that not only provide a competitively priced product, but far more importantly, a policy that correctly covers your individual requirements. Neymar’s £200 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris SaintGermain sent shockwaves through the world of professional football, but should we really be surprised by the mega deals currently flowing through the game? David Fearnhead reports.

I

n 1992 something happened in a small Lancashire mill town that was to change the face of English football forever. Blackburn Rovers signed a 21-year-old Geordie striker who’d impressed at Southampton and was widely touted as being the best English striker for a generation. That Alan Shearer chose Blackburn over Manchester United wasn’t so much of a surprise, the club had signalled their ambitions with the hiring of Kenny Dalglish a year earlier, what was a surprise was the fee. A national record of £3.6million. At the time it was reported that it blew the previous record (Liverpool’s signing of Dean Saunders for £2.9m) out of the water. By contrast David Speedie, the man who Shearer replaced, was sold for just £400,000. It had taken 94 years for professional football in England to reach its first million pound player. It took just 13 years from Trevor Francis signing for Nottingham Forest for that figure to more than triple with Shearer’s £3.6 million, and now 25 years on we’ve just witnessed the first £200 million pound man in Neymar. The continent had always been ahead of English football when it came to outrageous price-tags. In the same year Blackburn signed Shearer, AC Milan broke the World Record in signing Gianluigi Lentini from Torino for a then astronomical £13m. Rarely, if ever, had football shocked the world to such an extent that even the Vatican made public comment. They described the signing as ‘an offence against the dignity of work’. It was an offence furthered by Lentini being a complete flop for the rossoneri. He was sold back to Torino for a cut-price £2m after making just 63 appearances for Milan. Back in 1979 when Brian Clough strode out before the national press casually clutching a squash racket to announce the signing of Francis, the pundits had been quick to calm the inflationary talk of transfer fees. “We’ll not see another million pound player for a long time,” was a view echoed by many. However, by the dawn of the Premier League for the 1992/93 season all bets were off. Ask anyone in football today how Blackburn Rovers managed to

become Premier League Champions in 1995, and they’ll point to the record signings of Shearer, and later Chris Sutton for £5m. Local Steel magnate Jack Walker was said to have bought the title, and yet his title winning team cost just £14.7million. Compare that to closest rivals Manchester United’s £19.3 million, and Rovers begin to look like a bargain. Even taking into account the rate of inflation, Leicester City’s fairytale title winning team cost more. The facts failed to outlive the legend. The cork was out of the bottle. The mantra you’ve got to spend big if you want to be Champions was firmly established. The ever increasing money television was bringing into the game, plus the rich rewards of sponsorship, was alluring to fan and owner alike. Just four years after the British press had mocked the ‘crazy money’ of their continental neighbours, Shearer broke the World Record transfer fee with a £15 million move to Newcastle United. It wasn’t long before English football was regularly breaking the bank in its transfer dealings. Manchester United, the most successful club in Premier League history, have frequently been one of the world’s biggest spenders. The signing of Juan Sebastián Verón from Lazio in 2001 for £28.1m was followed a year later with a £30m deal bringing defender Rio Ferdinand from Leeds. More recently they’ve done big money deals for Di Maria (£59.7m), Mata (£37.1m), Martial (£36m), Pogba (£89m), Matic (£40m), and Lukaku (£75m). Not to be outdone crosstown rivals Manchester City, bankrolled by money from Abu Dhabi, have made 8 of the top 50 biggest transfer deals of all time. They signalled their intent in 2011 with the signing of Sergio Agüero for £38million from Atlético Madrid. Yet, whilst City continued to bring in foreign imports such as Kevin De Bruyne for £55m, they’ve differed from their domestic rivals in that they’ve spent big on home grown talent. Three of their all time biggest signings have been Englishmen, Raheem Sterling (£44m), John Stones (£47.5m), and Kyle Walker (£50m).

Roman Abramovich has consistently opened his wallet to keep Chelsea as title contenders. This summer they broke the £50 million for a player for a second time with the £58m capture of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid. Though the West London club will be hoping for a better return on their money than the £50m they spent for Fernando Torres in 2011. Even Arsenal, for all the talk of their lack of spending, have twice spent beyond £40m for a single player. Though there are four years between the signings of Mesut Özil for £42.5m in 2013 and Alexandre Lacazette this summer for £46.5m. Liverpool have been largely beneficiaries of football’s rapidly rising market prices. Whilst the signing of Christian Benteke for £32.5m was unsuccessful on the pitch they managed to recoup £27m of it by selling him to Crystal Palace, and the combined sales of Torres, Sterling, and Suárez add up to an impressive £169 million. The blue half of Merseyside is also flush with money. With the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, and a new Iranian-born backer, Everton signed Gylfi Sigurðsson from Swansea for £45m in August. What’s been surprising is that Spain, who traditionally have been the kings of the big money buys have begun to lose ground to new money rivals. China continues to hoover up Brazilians in the way Russia once did, and then there is Paris Saint-Germain who in one move this summer more than doubled the World Record transfer fee. PSG have previous, since the Qataris took over in 2011 they’ve regularly dipped into their considerable reserves to land players such as Edison Cavani (£55m) and David Luiz (£50m). Zlatan Ibrahimović had been signed by PSG for a transfer fee of just £18.5m in 2012. Though the overall deal consisting of sporting and economic rights of the player was actually closer to £166m netting the Swede a salary of £13m, a staggering £1.85 million more per year than he earned as a player for the mighty AC Milan. Even in light of this few were prepared for the exact figure that was about to be paid for Neymar. £200m for the transfer, plus a reported additional fee of £134m in basic salary. Neymar’s five-year contract with Paris SaintGermain will see the player earn £134m, that’s £26.8m a year, or £515,000 per week, or £73,571 per day, or £3,065 per hour, or £51 per minute.

THE DEAL

Neymar’s PSG deal means he will now make more in basic annual salary than the net worth of World’s fastest man Usain Bolt. The 8-time Olympic gold medalist and 11-time World Champion earned just £7. 1 million in winnings. The bulk of the Jamaican sprinter’s £26m net worth comes from endorsements and sponsorship. Nike’s 11-year deal with Neymar is worth £8m a year, meanwhile Bolt was paid less, £7.1m, by sponsors Puma. When you factor in Neymar’s endorsements and sponsorship his net worth has been estimated in excess of £80m. The overall deal to take Neymar from Barcelona to PSG is said to be worth around £450m and includes a buyout clause of £198m. £31m of the £200m transfer deal is reported to have gone directly to Neymar’s father.

club for ageing professionals, those who’d already won major titles in Europe’s top leagues and fancied an easier life in the less pressurised world of Ligue1. Neymar’s line about it fancying “a new challenge” was one nobody was really buying, but how did it come about? Reports of PSG’s bid to land the Brazilian first surfaced in mid July 2017. Although initially insisting he was happy at Barcelona, by the end of the month Neymar’s head had clearly been turned. What appeared to be a staged fallout during training, signalled that the tug of war between the Catalan giants and PSG was about to turn nasty. By the 1st of August, Neymar was touching down in Dubai for a not so secret meeting, and a day later Barcelona finally admitted the player had asked to leave. Even with the deal done, the fallout continued. At the time of writing FIFA are investigating an official complaint by Neymar at Barcelona’s failure to pay a

42

£24m “loyalty” bonus to him for signing a five-year contract renewal last year. Barcelona in return are seeking £7.8m in compensation from Neymar for breach of contract following his move to PSG. Spanish football also didn’t take too kindly to the move with La Liga president Javier Tebas claiming that PSG’s Qatari ownership amounts to “financial doping”. They’ve have gone so far as to take the complaint to UEFA, the European Union, and the Swiss Courts. Tebas took to the media to denounce the unfairness of competing against state-backed club. “PSG’s accounts show that they have a larger commercial income than Real Madrid and Manchester United, which is to say that the value of their brand is greater than those clubs. Well, that is impossible,” said Tebas. The financial fair play rules were brought in by UEFA to prevent clubs falling into crippling and unsustainable debt. Some hoped it would also prevent

single clubs essentially buying up all the talent, in actuality the FFP rules have made little effect as clubs have found simple ways to get around them. In Neymar’s case this meant the player buying himself out of his own contract. A move which La Liga said was against their own rules. £200 million for a player might seem like the mad excess of billionaire owners for whom no price is too high, however many in business have pointed out that there is some financial logic behind the deal. Neymar is arguably the biggest name in football, and with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both in their 30’s, Neymar at 25 is set to have many more years in the game. With fans all over the world, owning the Neymar brand could well be worth even more in revenue to PSG than the cost of signing the player.

Interview

How one Goalkeeper brought his career back from the brink to become a League Champion and proudly wear his National team jersey. David Fearnhead speaks to Hungary International David Grof about his football redemption.

D

avid Grof had a good summer. He got married, his team won the league, and he became an international with Hungary. For the 28-year-old goalkeeper life is good. To speak with Grof now, you wouldn’t imagine he’d be the sort of player to come off the rails. He’s intelligent, thoughtful, and ultra professional. However, his name was very nearly added to the long list of Football’s forgotten men. Those with a promise of great things that never materialised.

and maybe I went a little bit in the wrong crowd. I met people outside of football who didn’t have to get up the next day and go to training and give 110%. I got a bit of money in my pocket, so I got a new car and that’s how it all started.” Aged 20 he lost his licence for drink-driving. Eight years on there is no attempt to evade his past or deflect responsibility. Much like his performances on the pitch these days he doesn’t duck from taking ownership.

little bit. It wasn’t easy.” “Maybe I didn’t appreciate my chance as much as I should have. I appreciate things now much more. I appreciate going to training, I appreciate playing more. People who know me, they tell me this is what had to happen because now I am so much different. You can’t compare myself now to the boy that was at Hibs.” After being released by Hibernian, he came to England. Notts County signed him with a view to loan him out. A loan spell at Conference side Mansfield Town made him a cult hero with the Nottinghamshire club. His commanding style was a favourite of the fans and he was integral to the Stags’ impressive run to FA Trophy Final. His happiness was to be short-lived. Notts “It was my decision. “It was my decision. I’m not blaming anybody else.”

At his lowest point he found himself alone, a fourth-choice keeper living in a foreign country, drinking too much and partying too often. Caught driving whilst over the limit he became tabloid fodder and was released by Hibernian despite having 18-months left on his contract. How had it gone all so wrong for a player who was scouted by the club at just 16 and had been touted as one of most promising young goalkeepers in Europe?

“The whole thing started because I was a bit lonely,” admits Grof. “It got a bit boring. I’d have training, then I’d go back to an empty house because I didn’t have family or friends staying with me. I started going out. I was always in nightclubs

prevented him from realising his true potential. “I started seeing a therapist and it helped. I kept a lot of things inside that I never talked about and finally there was someone to listen to me. I think that was the first step, then it just took time. I had to sort myself out. It was me wanting it. I would wake up in the morning thinking this has got to stop. I have to be different. I have to be better. I’ve only got one chance in life and I’ve got to take it.” After a brief spell in Germany he realised that he needed to go home and find some stability in his life. “I was away for nine years and that was a long time just to come back settle down a bit and grow up as a person as well, not just get better as a footballer.” Meeting his wife Claudia changed everything. She has proven to be a true anchor in his life. “She’s a sports person as well. She plays handball, which is not really big in the UK but it’s quite big over here. She knows what sport is, so it’s a perfect match.” Everything has just clicked now. I think one of the keys to my success is that I’ve settled down and I’m happy as a person. “There is nothing I’m really missing from my life. I’ve got everything that I’ve ever wanted and everything that makes me happy. I learnt to appreciate football. Football is all that I have known my whole life. So I had to learn how important it is to me. I just go out every day and try to give my best.” In 2016 he signed for Honved in Budapest, the same club the legendary Ferenc Puskás made his name at before signing for Real Madrid. Grof proved a vital component as the club tasted success for the first time in 24 years by landing the League title. It was special for personal reasons too. Grof had grown up watching his father, Attila, play professional football in Hungary. “He played in the first division here, so that was always a dream of mine to make a name for myself in my homeland. My dad won the league and I wanted to do the same.” So impressive were Grof’s junior’s performances that it put him on the radar of the National team. A call-up soon followed. “It was unbelievable. Probably one of the proudest moments of my career. You know that’s what every boy dreams of so I can’t really describe how it felt. Winning the league also had another effect on Grof. It made him want more. “I’m hungrier than ever. I want to get every bit of success I can and I’ve no sense of stopping. I got into the National team but this is not the end, I want to be as good as I can be.”

“I didn’t start playing regular first team football until I was 21, that’s when I went on loan to Mansfield. So I can’t say I’m burnt out,” he laughs. “I’m really enjoying myself now. I’m settled down, I’ve gotten married. I won the league, and I’m playing for my National team. If you put it like that it all sounds perfect, but I still have ambitions to go back and do better than I did last time.” He still feels he has unfinished business in England. “I’m 28 years old, and for a goalkeeper that’s not old. I think I’m only just getting started and my best years are still ahead of me. So I have this dream to go back, maybe to England because I love the place, or anywhere in the UK, Scotland or England. To go back and make even bigger things happen.” He also credits his time in England with giving him his distinct style. At 6ft 3” he’s a fierce competitor in the mould of Peter Schmeichel, one who

likes to own any ball coming into his territory. It’s an aggressive style that’s won him many admirers at home. “It gets mentioned a lot on TV. The National coach said that was one of the main reasons why he called me up because I’m a different style to most of the keepers over here, and I think that comes from the fact that I played in England. In England the game is really physical and this is what I’m like as a person, I try to be as brave as I can.” He says even though he wasn’t settled as a person he still felt at home in England. “I keep talking to my Missus and saying that we have to move there one day. If the chance came along it would be very difficult to turn down.” Grof currently has two-years left on his contract, but has been attracting serious interest from clubs in Europe’s bigger leagues including Italy and here in the UK. His performances for Honved, both in the Hungarian league and Champions League qualifiers, have put him in the shopwindow. It’s rare players of his ability carry such a low price tag, but Grof says he doesn’t look back with regrets, as he’s more focused on who he is now. “I think I became a better person. It took a lot of bad things that happened in my life, but in the end I’m happy how it’s all planned out.”

Sharp, sleek, lively, with more than a touch of style... Are we talking about the chef or the restaurant here? Professional Player’s Peter Etherington ventured excitedly to Harrogate to talk to the one-time winner of I’m a Celebrity, host of several popular TV shows, multiple world record holder (check Google out!), and founder of the stunning Gino D’Acampo My Restaurant collection of restaurants – Gino D’Acampo

here are some people in life who have a joie de vivre: a certain something, a certain energy and passion that makes you smile and feel a connection with them. That’s why chef Gino D’Acampo is a celebrity chef. He’s someone who exudes confidence and joy, but also a deep passion about what he does – and that’s why his shows such Let’s Do Lunch, There’s no taste like home, Gino’s Italian Escape, his slots on This Morning, and his many superb cookbooks, are so popular with the UK public. I met Gino at the opening of the Harrogate branch of his Gino D’Acampo My Restaurant. A grown up brother to his bustling Gino D’Acampo My Pasta Bar eateries, it’s clear to see just why D’Acampo’s latest venture is turning heads. And palates. It’s Italian cooking at its finest, in sumptuous surroundings. With branches in Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, London’s Euston Station, and now Harrogate, D’Acampo is planning to open more, soon... “Yes, I have a long-term vision to open a restaurant to in as many of the UK’s major city’s as possible. But

is very important” states Gino, before adding, “I want it to be simple, slick, yet effective. I always look for simplicity in everything I do. Simplicity is cool, simplicity is chic. I look for a clean image and brand that our customers can relate to and like. The balance has to be perfect – and from the feedback we’ve had so far, I think we are getting it right.” Whilst stylish surroundings are one thing, surely it’s about what’s on the plates that matter? And Gino D’Acampo My Restaurant certainly doesn’t disappoint. It’s certainly not a case of style over substance here, as our table all thought that the superb food in front of us was based on using the best and freshest of ingredients. Is this Gino’s mantra?

I’m always over there with our suppliers and producers. But a major part of sourcing ingredients is ensuring that we get amazing local produce, too. I have to be comfortable with the ingredients we are cooking with, and that means quality controlling where we get our food from. I spend a lot of time and money resourcing ingredients. We have around 17 people who source our ingredients and our products, such as our 21 dayaged days steaks and free range, organic chicken.” With over 22 years’ experience of working in UK restaurants, Gino D’Acampo is no overnight sensation, and he is someone that has put in the hard yards to get his superb culinary reputation. I asked him what is the biggest buzz he gets from what he does? “I think it’s about trying to inspire people to cook. I don’t cook for show, I cook because I want to inspire people to cook. Football mentoring, a boxing academy in Sardinia, training with Harry Kane and striving to become world champion‌ could life be any busier for British light heavyweight championship Frank Buglioni? Luke Nicoli listened in‌

Frank Buglioni

You’re a well-respected boxer, Frank, so what’s this about you giving advice to young footballers?

I was invited by Brighton & Hove Albion to give a motivational talk to the club’s youth-team players, explaining to them the importance of health, education and nutrition in top-level sport. I went down to their fantastic training facility and spoke to the players about the life lessons that helped me as I started out on the road to becoming a professional sportsman. Not all of them will make it as professionals, so it’s important they look at all aspects of their life, isn’t it?

I spoke to them about the importance of maintaining their studies, looking after their bodies and making sure they spend their spare time away from football wisely. They need to be in the best shape possible to make the most of their talent, but they also need that discipline in their lives should they not make it as footballers and need to pursue other career options. Did you get a good reaction from the boys you spoke to?

They absorbed everything I was telling them and also asked questions of their own. The fact that I have been through what they’re going through, albeit in a different sport, struck a chord and that was great to see. I always find it very rewarding to give something back and if I can make a small difference to their lives, then it’s all good. Along with my parents and coaches, I used to look up to Michael Lomax and Darren Barker growing up, boxers who gave me some really good advice. I took what they said on board and hopefully what I told the young footballers at Brighton will also stay with them.

friends are trying to drag you into nightclubs all the time, they’re not your true friends. You’re a Chelsea fan from north London, so how did that happen?

My dad was actually born in Highbury, but he was a mad Chelsea fan, which he got from his uncle. He grew up with the famous team from the 1970s, Peter Osgood and all those boys, and he passed it down to me. My mum is from Bermondsey, Millwall country, but she is also Chelsea, so I was pretty much born into it! Who were your heroes growing up?

It was the Vialli/Gullit era, with Dennis Wise and Tore Andre Flo my favourite players. Obviously Chelsea were more of a cup team than a titlewinning side back then but we were always there or thereabouts. Then, when Roman Abramovich came in, it kicked us on to the next level and now we can look back on five Premier League wins and having lifted the Champions League. What are your memories of that Bayern Munich win?

That was just an incredible night, an incredible performance, especially as it was in Bayern’s own backyard. My brother went out for the game but I was actually at a wedding that day and we kept nipping out to look through the windows of the pub next door – much to the annoyance of the bride! When we won, it was amazing – it certainly helped the reception go with a bit of a swing! You’ve spoken to footballers, but have you ever trained any of them?

I’ve done a bit on the gloves with Harry Kane because we share the same strength and It’s hard for youngsters who have dreams of being conditioning coach. He’s a great lad and can professional footballers to concentrate on their certainly hold his own – on the pitch and in the studies, but you did just that, didn’t you? Inevitably, you want to focus all your efforts into ring! I’ve also got my own boxing academy at the your chosen sport, but why not have an education Fort Village resort in Sardinia, and I’ve had Dennis as well? I actually went to Westminster University Wise and Tore Andro Flo come out to see us there to study architectural building surveying, having [Chelsea have an academy in the same resort]. It’s previously done well with my GCSEs and A Levels. nice when you get to build up a friendship with the players you have watched on the pitch. I also had My dream was to always become a boxer, but by John Terry send me an uplifting message before continuing my studies I knew that I would have something to fall back on, should things not work my world title fight which was really nice. out the way I planned. their own kit, consisting of gloves, hand wraps and a shirt. We last saw you in the ring winning a 12-round war of attrition with Ricky Summers on Sky earlier this summer, so things are back on track...

I made the correct decision to move up from super middleweight to light heavyweight after my world title shot against Fedor Chudinov. I was finding it harder and harder to make the weight and the switch has clearly worked to my advantage, having beaten Hosea Burton for the British light heavyweight title, then retaining the belt against Ricky. I was surprised that it went the distance with Ricky. He took plenty of shots early on and surprised me with how tough he was. When I discovered afterwards what a very difficult time he’s had outside the ring, I’m glad that it went the distance because he deserved to see that bell. He’s a boxer who has my total respect. There’s talk of Anthony Yarde next – so where are we at with that?

I’ve got a mandatory fight next, then we’ll see if he wants the fight. In terms of boxing experience he’s not near me and in terms of profile, he isn’t bigger than me. I’d say he’s got the unbeaten record and hasn’t done anything wrong so far, but he’s unproven, untested and has had the chance to prove himself against Burton but declined. So that tells you everything you need to know about Yarde. He’s obviously not as sure in his ability as his hype and the people who follow him think. As far as I’m concerned, the next step is to win the Lonsdale belt outright, then move onto European and world honours.

ARSENAL

BiZ-NESS! Lethal Bizzle is known the nation over for his Fester Skank. He is also a huge Arsenal fan and even has a family connection to the club, as Luke Nicoli discovered when he caught up with the renowned grime artist… How did you become an Arsenal fan, Bizzle?

Coming from Walthamstow, most of my mates supported Tottenham and so did my dad. But back in the day, they were a poor team and I just couldn’t relate to them. Red was always my favourite colour, followed by yellow, so I was just drawn towards Arsenal. They were also by far the most successful of the two clubs and had the better, eye-catching players. I did keep my allegiances quiet from my dad for some time though, although he wasn’t happy when I told him the news! Who was the player you looked up to the most back in the day?

positive in what he was doing and who managed to stay on the right path. He became a role model to so many people and you have to give him massive respect for that and for everything he has achieved in his career. What has been your favourite period supporting Arsenal?

It would have to be the Invincibles and before that, the double-winning year of 2002. What a period to be an Arsenal fan! You just had a different feeling about the club back then and it wasn’t just because of the wonderful players we had, it was about being at Highbury – our spiritual home and a place that holds so many memories for so many people. Don’t get me wrong, the Emirates is a lovely stadium, but Highbury just had a great vibe about the place, a real energy, and teams were beaten before they’d even walked out of the tunnel.

Ian Wright, he made me proud to say that I was Arsenal. One of my very earliest memories was of him playing in the 1993 FA Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday, when he scored in both the first game and the replay. I remember his celebrations, going absolutely crazy because it meant so much to him, Who were the stand-out players for you? scoring at Wembley and playing for that shirt. Those high-profile games on the big stage were made for him. Obviously Thierry Henry is right up, one of the greatest players in the club’s history, Robert Pires, The Arsenal players of today are sometimes accused Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg… the list goes on of not giving everything for the shirt – he was the total and on. For me though, Dennis Bergkamp just had opposite, wasn’t he… too much talent. He was a wonderful technician and He encapsulated everything that football should be could see things on the pitch that nobody else could. about; desire, energy, that aggression and sheer will Remember that goal he scored against Newcastle to win. be able to do the dirty work as well, especially in the Premier League – that’s what sets the winners apart from the rest. That team was full of big characters who could look after themselves, leaders who had each other’s back. They would be screaming to make sure they all left everything on the pitch and those high standards never dropped. They were the added ingredients that made them so special and I think that’s what’s missing from the current team. Do any of the Arsenal boys play your tunes in the changing room?

I got to know the boys through Emmanuel Frimpong [the ex-Arsenal midfielder who is Bizzle’s cousin]. I know [ex-Gunner] Alex OxladeChamberlain and Danny Welbeck pretty well but I’m not sure what gets played in that dressing room now. I think there’s a bit of a battle as to who’s in charge but I would like to think they listen to my music and get inspired by it. Your big tune this year was ‘I Win’ so will the Gunners be winning the league this season?

It’s getting more difficult. Is Arsene Wenger the right man for the job anymore? Do the players have what it takes to challenge Chelsea or take on Manchester United, who are going to get stronger and stronger under Mourinho? Is the desire there? It’s difficult to see a title challenge at the moment, but you can never rule us out of the cup competitions. We’ve had some great days out at Wembley in the FA Cup, so it’s still good to put silverware in the cabinet – something Tottenham haven’t achieved yet!

Don’t be caught offside by HMRC As fans flock back to the terraces and players take to the pitch for a new season, financial matters and tax affairs are not the top priority for many professional footballers. But sporting careers are exhilarating and need complete focus, so it’s crucial to know your financial affairs are in safe hands. Now’s the perfect time to talk to Price Bailey about meeting your tax obligations and staying onside with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Filing your tax return More people have to submit a tax return each year – and even if HMRC don’t send you a tax return form, it’s your responsibility to check if you need to complete one. If you are unsure, contact us as soon as possible. The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April; returns must be filed and any tax owing must be paid by the end of January the following year. For example, for the tax year that ended on 5 April 2017, tax returns must be filed and any tax paid by 31 January 2018. If you are late filing your tax return or paying any tax you owe, you will face financial penalties. January is one of the busiest months in the football calendar, so it’s best to prepare and submit your return now. This gives you more time to prepare for paying your tax by January 31.

Profits are calculated by taking the rental income you receive and deducting expenses you have incurred, such as letting agent fees, insurance and repair costs. The interest paid on any mortgage on the property is also normally deductible (although the way tax relief is given is changing). The same principles apply to any property you own outside the UK. If tax is paid in the country where the property is located, this tax will most likely be deducted from any UK tax charge. When you sell a property that has not been your main home for the whole time you have owned it, there may also be capital gains tax to pay.

Interview

How’s best to be ready for

life after the game? We are introduced to it slowly through our junior years, acclimatised to the pressure, and supported by our passion for the game. But what happens when the stadium lights are turned off on our careers and when the fans find someone new to cheer for? As the 17/18 season has kicked off, does our training and academy system help or hinder players in preparation for life after professional football? Professional Player finds out more from Life After Sport... 74

Life After Sport

1. Life after sport is unknown If making it to the top of sport is tough, then transitioning to a successful life after sport is equally so. For most elite athletes, passion for your sport and the confidence gained from your abilities developed naturally. You didn’t have to question it, you just knew that you loved your chosen sport and your confidence in it had been built over many years by many small victories and compliments.

3. The transition takes your investment and planning

Whether players/ athletes don’t earn much from their sport or the big earners, you’ve been used to an environment where things have been planned for you and structured. You’ve not had to worry about it until this stage comes, however once you do inevitably step out that bubble access to professional guidance is now available which once wasn’t for so many. ver the past two years we have However, for any sports professional, there are Life after sport can be the total opposite… spoken to dozens of recently costs involved that need to be thought through Athletes have to consciously question what retired or retiring players and with stepping away from sport which may surprise they are interested in, where their strengths athletes and in the comfort of you, and include; lie and create their own confidence in a hostile our quiet conversations, away environment where they are often working their • Money formerly earned from the from the perceived judgement way from the bottom up. game compared to whatever new career/ of the real world, there are four main themes in direction lies ahead all transitions that athletes tell us about that they They have to rebuild or renovate their identity and self-worth to adapt to their new challenges and • Costs associated with that time of life: tend not to admit to anyone else: environments... as many have come to realise with e.g. children, mortgages etc so many life factors this is really tough! • Re-skilling yourself and associated 1 It’s unknown further education The cost of lost earnings is obvious, but can be 2 It takes time significant for athletes in popular sports, with up to a 75 to 80 percent reduction in income for most 3 It needs your investment and planning In our experience, a successful transition will take athletes, and even higher for the absolute superstars. 4 It is made easier by talking about it between two and three years, and an unsuccessful Compound this with paying for your own gym one can last a lifetime. memberships, doctors and physio bills (which can be ongoing depending how your body has held This may seem like a long time, but if you For many players who have been the best in up), and the reality that most of your meals are compare it to the time it takes to transition from a their chosen field, it is hard to admit this to young aspiring athlete to reach elite level, usually no longer covered, and it all starts to add up. Interview Life After Sport

At the same time as all of this is happening, many athletes will be required to upskill or retrain themselves to enhance their opportunities in the ‘real world’. Generally speaking, short courses, certificates and diplomas, university qualifications all carry significant financial investment and the usual coaching route which is the traditional way for players is no different. A failure to apply relevant courses/ higher education to your true desires or incorrectly aligning them to what you want to do within or outside sport shouldn’t be left to chance and professional guidance to explore your full range of options will optimise your potential as often there could be avenues you haven’t previously considered which your skill set would thrive in. The lesson to all sports professionals is that all of this can be prepared while you are still competing. Sport can be a cruel travel companion at times and put many unexpected bumps in our road, so the ability to plan your life outside of sport not only prepares you for transition, it also puts you in the driver’s seat regardless of what life throws at you.

4. It’s made easier by talking about it

Many of these people will explain how to reframe these experiences into strengths in your new adventures.

By keeping the challenges of transition to ourselves and failing to admit they are real, many sports professionals imprison themselves in their own thoughts. We often hear athletes say they thought they were the only ones struggling and, because of that, they thought something was wrong with them. Trained in a world where injury is a form of weakness, our past can torment our thinking and make it hard to ask for help. This can be exacerbated by what we witness as the greatest source of anger for many athletes in retirement: a feeling of betrayal. This is borne out of the perception that the sport that asked for their hearts, their bodies and their minds for 15 years of their lives, now can’t even find the time to call them to ask: “Are you okay?” For any athlete experiencing these feelings, they are completely normal and are the observations that we have heard over and over again talking to athletes going through this process, and so you are not alone. The solution? Talk to past athletes, coaches, managers. Talk to people who have walked in your shoes and gone through the same challenges. Even better, talk to people in the fields you are now working in or want to work. Find mentors in work, mentors in life and even just mentors in transition. This can be done ahead of retirement through networking and work experience; by building an identity alongside of sport.

Now there’s professional help, you’re no longer alone…

For most of us, anxiety about any future event is simply a fear of the unknown. For players, this is amplified by a comparison to their known past; the fact that they were outstanding at something in their life. Refusing to take action and admit the reality of your future is just procrastination, a way of protecting yourself and living in the past. People often refer to a feeling of relief, excitement or renewed motivation once they have faced up to their particular career change issue and taken some positive action. It is an end but also a new beginning. These positive feelings will help you to look for relevant and related career advice. However, some people look for personal help and input and therefore their aim is to find a trained career consultant whom they can share their career journey and experiences with.

So what will get you out of bed after you finally hang those boots up?? You are unique and just because former professionals have gone down a certain route after the game does it mean it’s right for you too? Career transition requires real professional expertise, our objective isn’t just to get you into a job to fill the void but to optimise what options are best for you that you may never have even considered without the benefit of professional advice from experts that will take you through the journey from where you

are to where you want to be and not just end up by chance... This is the very reason why Life After Sport was devised for the sports professional... Life After Sport addresses issues pertaining to whatever’s next after sport by delivering holistic solutions that improves our clientele’s lives within professional sport. These main services include career coaching, confidential advice and early engagement academy workshops, all available on an individual or organisational basis. that people have forgotten or perhaps overlooked. Everyone was eulogizing about such a laid back approach to watching their kids but I can’t help but wonder if some of their praise was misplaced. Is their more to a parents role in helping develop a young aspiring athlete than some people think? Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi. These three names symbolize greatness in their own sport. For my generation these sportsmen and women are icons of their sport, synonymous with being the best in the world and they all have one thing in common. Their parents pushed them to be the best they could possibly be from a very young age. Tigers dad didn’t go to the driving range and sit back in his chair and just let young Tiger hit some balls on his own. He instructed him, he encouraged him, he challenged him and at times scolded him. In the end he produced one of the best sportsmen that has ever lived. Agassi’s Dad hand built a tennis court in his own back yard and a machine nicknamed the “dragon” that fired balls out at a ferocious rate. Agassi points to this machine and his Dads constants demands to return the ball harder each time as the reason for his fantastic forehand. Tiger and Agassi are both products of an environment where they were pushed every day by their parents to be the best they could be. At times did their parents cross the line of what was considered by the general public acceptable behaviour? From stories I have read I think it is safe to say they did but was that perhaps necessary to produce a world class athlete? While hard at times I suspect these athletes all look back now and are thankful for the way their parents moulded them. Would they have had all the

trophies, accolades and money if it wasn’t for that constant push from their parents. The Williams sisters Dad can always be seen sitting in the tennis stadiums around the world supporting his daughters, a sure sign that their relationship is as strong as ever despite his role as taskmaster during their formative years. Where would Tigers career be right now if his Dad Earl was still around? Many feel Tigers demise started when he lost his Dad. He was not only his father but best friend and mentor. Tiger didn’t despise him for pushing him hard as a child he idolized him. As a young child growing up you need advice, guidance, encouragement, support but at times you need disciplined, challenged and pushed to reach your full potential. While I never reached the heights of the athletes mentioned I have enjoyed a career in professional sport for over 15 years. I think I have managed to get the most out of the ability I had thanks in a large part to my parents. Of course children at times need to make their own mistakes and learn from them but the experience and wisdom a parent can pass on from their own experiences are invaluable. During your teenage years when there are so many distractions you need someone to point you in the right direction. At that age it is so easy to just follow the crowd and succumb to peer pressure. If you have parents that can warn you about the pitfalls of making the wrong decisions and guide you along the right path then the impact later in life can be huge. Before a parent can really push a child to reach the top in sport their are two ingredients the child must have. For anyone to reach their potential at anything they need to be passionate about what they do. I have always lived and breathed football. Growing up it consumed my thoughts every hour of the day. One of my report cards once read, “At times Neill’s mind is at Rugby Park and not in the class.” To be fair to the teacher she was spot on. I was single minded in my desperation to be a professional footballer. On top of a passion for the sport you need to show an aptitude for it. I have seen many players who loved football but with the best will in the world they just didn’t have the ability no matter how much they wanted it. If you have the aptitude and the passion then I think that is when you can handle a parent pushing you to be the best you can be. If you don’t have these ingredients it will just end in tears for everyone. When I read autobiographies or listen to interviews from sportsmen or woman they often site their parents as the biggest influence in their career. The influence of parents obviously varies with every athlete. In some cases their parents didn’t have any clue about the sport their child participated in but supported them in other ways. Ferrying them all over the country to and from training and events, lending emotional support after disappointments and encouraging a level head after great victories. In

He could see the ability I had and how much I wanted it but realized I needed Now as a father of four young children myself I pushed to achieve it. I can safely say without these appreciate I will have decisions to make over the demands being placed on me I wouldn’t have coming years on how to best help my children made a career out the game. s soon as my taxi arrives it’s obvious that the Savoy is somewhat amazing. Firstly, I’m greeted by a tall wellpresented man taking my luggage from me to assist me to the entrance, the doorman has asked my name while ushering me into the lobby, so he can send my bag off to my room, while a girl takes over greeting me and someone else hands her the check-in slip. First impressions are wow, no expense spared here, service is impeccable. At my suite, a tail-coated butler appears, the girl leaves. I’m given the full low down on the suite and its full functions and operations. In less than fifteen minutes I have been fluently drawn into the world of The Savoy. So, I’m looking around and faced with perfection, artistic, sophisticated suite. Exquisite bed linen, a luxurious mattress, Wedgwood china, personalised notepaper and stationary on a desk which I would love to have had at home and not to mention the view of the River Thames. Perfectly polished fresh fruit conspire to enhance my stay and I cannot forget the Boodles publication to advertise pure luxury items to make me feel somewhat of a princess.

The Children of Today

One of the most common saying’s I hear within the Academy system at the moment is “Kids are not like the used to be!” Well that’s because THEY AREN’T! Young children now have access to the whole world at their finger tips, they can talk to people from almost every country, access information subjects we couldn’t imagine and their reliance on social media is unprecedented. The majority also have everything, phones, games consoles and the best trainers. Even children who come from what would be perceived as low income families still seem to have all of the above. Now when adults make comments like “kids have everything these days”, “they don’t know what it’s like to go with out” and “Everything is done for them” it is vitally important to remember the main cause of this problem? US! Children are generally products of their environment, if they have everything, that’s because we give it to them,

if they don’t know what it’s like to go without, that’s because we don’t allow them to, and if they have everything done for them, that’s because we do it. So when we make our negative comments and criticise it is important to understand we are to blame. When young players come into the Academy system it is naive to think that you can engage these players in the same way you did with the cohort from the previous year. The world is evolving so quickly even children within the same generation are showing differences in the way they perceive life and their surroundings. If we are really going to continue developing young players it is the Club’s and Coaches that need to change, not the players. With that in mind I’m not taking about discipline or culture as these are fundamental within any industry but the way in which you instill these in your players will need to change. The old ‘One size fits all’ no longer has a place in education; therefore Club’s and their staff need to embrace the fact that every player will have different needs and require different coaching techniques.

Danny Searle

1. Capabilities The new generation of players are great problem solvers, they complete computer games hours after first playing them, they can navigate their way around any technology put in front of them and they utilise YouTube and other social media outlets to watch endless hours of football footage; which they then practice over and over again. This is nothing I’m sure you don’t already know; however the problems start when Coaches do not embrace this form of development and allow their players to express themselves and try new skills and techniques. There are 1000’s of coaching sessions put on every day where coaches set up their practices, their session objectives are planned and they have their progressions in place. This is common practice and there needs to be a purpose to the session; now the key is, within the session there has to be the provision for decision making and the opportunity for the players to try things, get them wrong and in a lot of cases self correct. The players ability to make mistakes and use them as a learning tool is imperative when developing a Growth Mindset. This what we as coaches/teachers should be encouraging but this again comes back to the environment we create.

2. Modern Day Issues More and more children are being diagnosed with various types of disorders, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) to name a few. These children can be high functioning and to the un trained eye their condition can be easily unrecognised and undiagnosed; which can lead to lack of understanding from their Parents, Coaches, Teachers and Peers. In my time within the Academy System there have numerous Players that would sit on the Spectrum in some form, they would be unpredictable with their behaviour, their comprehension of what may seem basic tasks will be low if not zero, and they will find it very hard to engage in team and group activities without being

disruptive or even withdrawn. During sessions they will seem to be completely ignoring your instructions and will often find it difficult to take on multiple tasks or rules at once. This is purely a lack of understanding or comprehension of your explanation. The importance of this subject is that children on the spectrum are highly creative and highly intelligent, if you can find a way to engage and encourage these children they are capable of achieving amazing things. You need to be really clear and concise with your instructions, ensuring you cover all basis with your teaching; explain, demonstrate and utilise various teaching methods to fully engage the child. You cannot assume that every child understands everything you say or do, there needs to be empathy to the fact that these children are all different and they need to be treated as individuals; which means you as the coach need to make the effort to really understand each player and their needs.

3. Too Much Too Early

ensure they have a good work ethic, are fully focused on their task, and most importantly become good people who understand the importance of Honesty, Discipline, Integrity and Respect. Players like to be challenged, they like competition and they have an inherent curiosity that if nurtured will bring unbelievable results with regards to improvement. We need to embrace this new generation and understand the level of work that needs to be put in to help them develop. Our job is to make sure we provide a fully holistic learning environment for these children so no matter what their needs, there are provisions in place. This isn’t easy, you as the coach will need to come out of your comfort zone to educate yourself on all the different aspects of learning and wellbeing. And Just like the players you need to recognise that you will get it wrong and it’s how you learn from your mistakes that we determine how much you can influence their environment. As previously mentioned, no child is the same; therefore you need to really work to know your players, find out what makes them tick, I have been working in Academy Football for 15 years; during this understand what takes them out time I have worked at West Ham of their comfort zone, appreciate United, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea the social and cultural differences and Southend United; where between them. I held Lead Roles in all three

Danny Searle

With the huge salaries, boot deals and agents involved with our Academy players it’s no wander they find it hard to get motivated. There are current young players who are millionaires without actually phases of Youth Development as well as a Head of Coaching kicking a ball in a professional position. I am a UEFA ‘A’ License league, they often do not even coach, Currently completing train in a first team environment. the Advanced Youth Award This brings me back to my (Professional Development Everything comes down to the original comments about players Phase)and will start the UEFA environment that you create. having everything, non of Pro License in January 2018. For players to develop and the above is showing signs of progress they need to know stopping and again I repeat it is that they are going to be challenged without NOT the players fault. It is the Club’s who give these players the salaries, it is the sports brands fear of failure, they need to have ownership of who give the endorsements and it is the agents their development and they need to have clear who will force contract negotiations and potential boundaries in which to work. Now I understand moves (I understand that not all agents have this that not all Clubs will support this methodology attitude and there are some very good agents and that there will be coaches and other staff who generally have both the players and the clubs you work with that will not see these areas as best interested at heart). priorities; however you need to be strong, have an identity that defines you as a coach where your beliefs and values are clear and consistent.

5. In Conclusion

4. The Challenge

The Challenge is for us to evolve as Coaches, can we adopt new techniques to engage players,

Remember that ALL children are capable of achieving Amazing things!

With a reputation that stretches all over the UK and around the globe from their base near Hereford, Oakwrights’ are the go-to company for the design and construction of oak framed houses. Professional Player’s Anthony Bunn spoke to the company’s owner, Tim Crump, about Oakwrights’ ethos, history, and just what sets them apart from the rest when it comes to producing beautiful, bespoke oak framed properties that their clients absolutely adore.

If not, you may very well want to read on and then get in touch with the company, especially if you desire a house that will astound, but one that will also be a home that you will simply love living in. Yet whilst Oakwrights cater for those discerning clients who seek a property that is both personal and special, it’s also a traditional family company. Tim Crump was a carpenter by trade and in his own words “was one of the last students to take the old city and guilds qualification!”. It was fascinating to hear him talk in such depth and with such passion about his work and his company. Almost thirty years ago he started his career repairing old oak framed houses in Herefordshire before Oakwrights was eventually formed: a company with the goal of building bespoke oak framed homes in all styles from traditional through to contemporary. Oakwrights is a traditional company that has evolved, yet still keeps its firm commitment to craftmanship (“we have more carpenters than ever before”). Tim adds, “Yes, we aim to keep and train our team And before I continue, you may wish to ask yourself members and we hope that once people join us they this about your home: Does your property combine will stay with us long term. This we link with the the very latest in CNC cutting edge technology knowledge that we must always change and adapt with the traditional skills of craft trained oak frame and keep developing new ideas and keep moving the carpenters? And did you Anthony Bunn: So, why should people choose an oak frame house, Tim, and if so, why choose Oakwrights? receive a level of personal service that went way Tim Crump: Good question. living. With an oak frame you can create a beautiful feature to your home that will gain character with age and will stand for hundreds of years. Our homes are extremely personalised, bespoke and have longevity. Oak is so different to all other constructions: it looks better with age and Oakwrights combine the classic and the contemporary. We have a multidisciplinary team who can carry the customer from design concept through planning to the creation of an amazing oak frame and onto full construction of your home. We have built homes in all parts of the UK and as far afield as Mustique in the Caribbean. What sets Oakwrights apart from others?

We build our oak frames combining the very best of CNC machinery technology, and link this with the traditional oak frame carpentry skills of our team – it’s unique. When a potential customer takes the guided tour of our design studio and workshops they can see the benefits of working with a company who will look after them all the way through the process. We are hugely proud that Oakwrights are the only oak framing company to date to have built an officially certified passive house. This means that we do not pay lip service to building environmentally friendly houses, we actually have the skill and quality of construction to achieve the incredibly high standards to gain full certified passive house construction! We are the only company to offer a full breathable wall and roof encapsulation system, giving a super insulated and healthy living environment.

Tim Crump

Tell us about the longevity your clients get from having an oak frame house...

The oldest oak frame I have personally worked on was dendrochronologically dated back to 1280. I always say to our customers that the only thing that we cannot give to our oak frames is 150 years, as they just look better with age. But that is part of the attraction and personalisation of an Oakwrights house: it’s a living house as oak is a living material! We would expect any house that we build to stand for at least three or four hundred years with good foundations and a sound roof. You have an amazing show home with an option of try-before-you-buy. Explain this further for us... Oakwrights Show Home

Talk us through the process of building an oak frame house from start to finish...

The process is very similar to the one I’ll outline for you below, but obviously every client is different. But this is just to give you a flavour of the depth of the project and just how much planning and thought we put into what we do: • Th e potential client visits Oakwrights Show Home/Open Day •A n initial meeting to discuss concepts for design of home •P re-planning consultation with planning authority •D esign and planning drawings produced in consultation with client •P lanning application made and granted • I nterior design process carried out •B uilding regulation and detailed construction drawings produced •O ak framed designed and manufactured. Wow, that is a seriously impressive and in-depth process, Tim. Do your homes come furnished and landscaped, too?

Our partner interior design company SimsHilditch specialise in the design of country contemporary interiors and supply all design and furnishings to achieve a fully complete home. We work with different landscape gardeners in different areas to achieve the complete oak home. Oakwrights also have a full in-house architectural design department who carry out full consultation with our clients to create the dream home. It’s a complete package.

Yes, Oakwrights are the only oak framing company to offer not only the opportunity to visit a show home but also the opportunity to stay in a five star self-catering oak frame show home, too! We find this experience works amazingly well for people and gives them a real experience of living with oak that usually leads to them embarking upon the journey of building their dream home in oak with us. We have two to four sets of guests at our Show Home every week.

Interview Marc Muniesa

Matches, Mountains, Mediterranean, and Marriage: From ST4 to Catalonia Anthony Bunn spoke to Stoke City player Marc Muniesa about how he spends his summer in Catalonia away from the stresses of the Premier League, and how he keeps fit in the build up to another grueling ten months in the spotlight.

L

ook at the weather in Barcelona right now, and look how it is here!” I’m sat with Stoke City’s Marc Muniesa in the beautiful but overcast environs of The Trentham Estate a stunning place only just over two miles away from the raucous bet365 stadium. We’re having a coffee outside one of the cafés, and it’s pretty chilly to be fair. Never mind can a team do it on a wet and windy Tuesday night in Stoke, can we stay outside for our chat on a cold Friday afternoon in the city? Muniesa has his mobile phone on the table and he’s comparing the temperatures between north east Spain and The Potteries. It comes as little surprise that it’s a tad warmer nearer The Med! In just three days’ time, Muniesa will be flying to Barcelona to join up with his partner and their young boy who jetted over to Barcelona the previous week. Catalonia is a region immensely close to Muniesa’s heart – especially with him being the second youngest ever player to play for Barca’s first team! “Yes, I was born in Barcelona, but grew up in Lloret De Mar. It’s by the sea, a popular seaside resort, and in the summer thousands go there on holiday. Lloret is a tourist town, and in the summer we get something like 300,000 tourists, so it’s really busy. Mainly tourists from Britain, Germany, Italy...” Family really is key to all Muniesa does. He’s softly spoken, and with a reputation for being an absolute gentleman off the pitch – and he’s a player who Potters’ fans readily identify with and one whom they love. His song – to the tune of La Bamba – is probably heard more than any other at Stoke games, and that’s even if he’s not playing!

We need a relax together as we are getting married later this summer and so have a lot to do, plan, and think about.” After offering my congratulations, I ask Muniesa if relaxation is important after finishing a season? “Yes, as a footballer, you really do need to switch almost totally off after a busy ten months or so. Your body needs to recover, and so we are going to a beautiful location to chill.” Muniesa, like all players, is given a programme to “Life is about family for me”, he agrees, before follow by Stoke City, ensuring that players are totally adding, “I have a younger brother who sometimes fit for pre-season. I especially love heading up to the mountains as it’s great for my legs and also great for cardio work as well. Also, it’s a superb place to go to clear your mind too, and think about what’s ahead of you. You also obviously get amazing views too, as was shown when Bojan posted his running videos of getting back to fitness after his injury. I also love using the beach for fitness purposes, too – I love running along the beach, but not so much swimming in the sea – that can get too tough, but I do like using the swimming pool.” The recently married Muniea’s have also just bought an apartment in Barcelona, as they were living in their parent’s houses when they got back home, but having a little one means they needed a family base. “Our apartment is very central, about five minutes to the Camp Nou”, states a beaming Muniesa, before adding, “and as I have a personal trainer in Barcelona it will be a lot easier for me this summer. We split our time between Barcelona and Lloret as I love both places, but it’s great that we have our first property in Barcelona, now. Lloret is not far in the car or on the train and Barcelona is a great city, and is getting even cleaner, even nicer.” So, what does a ‘normal’ day in Barcelona look like for Marc Muniesa? “Sunny, ha ha! On a normal day in Barcelona, I will look to get up around 8am and have breakfast. We will then go for a walk or do something with Pau, have lunch after, and then I will do my fitness work in the afternoon. I love Barcelona, it’s a great city for little ones, but me *postscript: Marc has recently joined Girona from Stoke in a season-long loan deal.

So me and my family are looking forward to finding new places and things to see and do.” Unassuming, quiet, and charming, Marc Muniesa made many friends from his time at Barcelona – some quote famous ones, too. But he retains a grounded individual who puts family and friends first... “Definitely. Every year I go to Ibiza for a few days with my great mates, such as Marc Bartra (Borussia Dortmund) and Sergi Roberto (Barcelona) as it’s only 35 minutes away by plane. We will still go again this year, but probably only for three days, sometime before I get married. I also have school friends back in Lloret, too. It’s very important for me to spend time with mates. It’s a very busy summer, as lots of players get married during the off-season. I think we’re going to four other weddings this summer!” Back to weddings: Marc and Sara were married on June 23rd in Sara’s village, around twenty minutes from Lloret. This after the ubiquitous stag-do. Before we departed, I asked Muniesa if his would be like a typical British stag do? “Ha, ha, ha... In Spain it is a total surprise. You can be sat at home one day and your friends can simply come over and get you and you have to go with them. I think it’s similar in Spain as it is in England... they dress you up and you have lots of fun...” Er, where was my invite, Marc? “Perhaps check with your postman? Ha, ha...”

The Restaurant with a Touch of Celebrity in the Heart of Bloomsbury

There’s a reason that celebrities are flocking to an unassuming Spanish Restaurant in the heart of Bloomsbury. part from its regular celebrity clientele, the restaurant itself has featured in a movie, the 2003 film ‘I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead’ with Charlotte Rampling. This close association with the glamorous world of showbiz does not, however, mean a hectic dining experience as Cigala prides itself on being discreet. A meal at this restaurant will be served in functional, stripped-down surroundings where the food is very much the star.

This smart but no-frills little gem is the brainchild of Jake Hodges, former head chef at River Café and The French House and co-founder of

Moro. The son of the English novelist and film director Mike Hodges, (of Get Carter and Flash Gordon fame), Jake is celebrating 17 years at Cigala this month. Jake’s phenomenal success is built on his uncompromising attitude to the preparation and sourcing of only the finest ingredients. Jake is an enthusiastic Hispanophile, and has spent years travelling around Spain to research his dishes, a passion which began in his family home in Andalucía. A dedicated chef, Jake remains as committed to the delivery of authentic Spanish cuisine as the day he opened Cigala’s doors in 2000.

The current menu features: Buey a la brasa, a perfectly grilled aged ribeye steak served with handcut chips and chuasco sauce; Pimientos de Padron, fat, sweet Padron peppers ripened in the Spanish sun and deep fried; Parillada de marisco is a dish which features the chosen seafood of the day, grilled and simply served with a fresh green salad. Unsurprisingly, Paella is the star of the menu and is prepared with bomba rice direct from Valencia and a choice of monkfish, squid (with ink), chicken, chorizo, prawns and mussels, (including a vegetarian option which will vary daily). Traditional choices of course include a selection of tapas, regular highlights being Tzangurro, baked crab with cayenne, brandy, tomato and parsley and the classic Patatas Bravas which disappear at speed the minute they are served. And while Hodges is keen to include the best in class from across the Spanish regions, he regularly puts his own twist on the menu. The mouthwatering desserts are created with the confidence of a chef at the top of his game.

Jake presides over a kitchen which offers classic Spanish national and regional cuisine complemented by an excellent wine list. Only the finest ingredients make it as far as the menu. In addition to the bona fide Spanish foodstuffs sourced from regional Spain, the head chef takes daily trips to Billingsgate and New Spitalfields Market to browse for the most garden-fresh produce available. Mona Lisa:

Secret in the Eye They had never met, yet reports of a secret code being discovered in the eyes of the world’s most famous painting, simultaneously ignited the imagination of two audacious artists resulting in the artist collaboration of the decade. veryfirstto.com tells us more...

Willard Wigan MBE ‘the greatest micro sculptor on earth’

H

ailed as ‘the world’s finest living art forger’ John Myatt has painted an indistinguishable version of the original Mona Lisa, and ‘the greatest micro sculptor on earth’ Willard Wigan MBE has created its smallest replica that features in her eye – painted with the hair of a fly. From the immaculately carved frame, to the globally recognised enigmatic smile and follow-you eyes, this totally authentic-looking portrait reproduces the painting’s outstanding beauty. The microscopic rendering measures under 1mm squared. Wigan, who has to go into a trance-like meditative state to slow down his nervous system so he can work between heartbeats, has somehow managed to capture the protagonist’s distinctive features on the most miniscule of canvases. John Myatt whose work has confounded experts went to prison for being involved in “the biggest art fraud of the 20th century”. He now paints on the right side of the law and his ‘Legitimate Fakes’ are collected by fans around the globe, and he even works alongside law enforcement helping to expose fraudsters. Myatt is also no stranger to the screen: in his TV show Fame in the Frame he paints celebrities in the style of a famous artist, including Stephen Fry in the style of Velázquez; and a Hollywood film is in development about Myatt’s case. Willard Wigan’s work is often many times smaller than the full stop at the end of this sentence and is frequently displayed within the eye of a needle or on the head of a pin. Suffering from severe dyslexia as a child he was ridiculed by both teachers and fellow pupils. Instead of attending school, he hid in a shed where he befriended ants and, thinking they needed somewhere to live, made miniature homes and furniture for them.

John Myatt hailed as ‘the world’s finest living art forger’

IT’S SHOW (DRY) TIME! With a name that resonates around the style, media, glamour, sport, and entertainment worlds, Tamara Ecclestone lives a turbocharged lifestyle. But she knows better than anyone the need to look great, especially when you’re juggling a family and career. She recently opened a new branch of SHOW Dry in Manchester, and Professional Player’s Gina Wade-Taylor caught up with her (and her lovely daughter) to discuss her aims and goals for this stunning new branch of her sophisticated and sassy hair salon chain.

Interview Tamara Ecclestone

“I WANTED TO BRING OUT SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN THE WORLD OF HAIRCARE AND SALONS”

P

erfectly presented, fashionable, on-trend, stunningly turned out – what am I talking about? Well, take your pick of either Tamara Ecclestone or her new SHOW Dry salon in Manchester’s Harvey Nichols; both add a touch of glamour and brightness to a relatively overcast Mancunian summer’s afternoon. I’m here to talk to Tamara about this new tasty addition to the north west’s glamour menu, and it’s clear from the offset that she not only looks like she just stepped out of (as well as into!) a salon, but has a clued-up, (superbly) styled head on her 33 year old shoulders, too. “Why have I gone down this route? Simple. For me, I am passionate about what I do, and I’m passionate about SHOW Dry and also SHOW Beauty. If I wasn’t passionate about doing it, and the need for these salons and products, then I wouldn’t do it. I spend my life juggling different things – and that’s why I love to include my family, and I do so with my work whenever I can...” Tamara is joined here by her lovely young daughter, Fifi, who is a bundle of life and energy. A chip off the old block no doubt, as my chat with her mum is laced with a constant stream of energy and positivity from Tamara. She clearly believes in what she does - And no wonder, SHOW Dry is simply stunning, and is sure to be a massive hit

with any number of knowledgeable, stylish northern ladies. So, why did Tamara open up in Manchester? “Well, I already have two salons in London and one in Newcastle, and in Manchester the girls are really glamorous and love looking good and caring about what they look like. It’s simply a place that loves to look great!” And looking great never took so little time, either. SHOW Dry salons are known for amazing results in less than an hour – so you can even come away from your lunch looking a different person! Tamara agrees... “Yes, I love the fact that my salons are great for busy ladies who still want to look their best. I wanted to bring out something different in the world of haircare and salons – as beauty and make-up are already well catered for, so I introduced my own chain. I kind of used the colour theme from my house, which I love, as I wanted the salon to look sleek and luxurious. SHOW Dry is

hopefully an extension of me, and reflects what I’m about”. Classic and opulent yet contemporary, is how I’d describe Tamara’s Manchester salon, which features 13 stations and services for all age ranges. It’s visually stunning. As Tamara herself admits, the chain is a “natural progression” after the success of SHOW Beauty, which has brought more than a touch of luxury to the world of haircare products. Products which in her own words “are great to use and look stunning too. We want people to have them proudly on display in their bathrooms as we think they look brilliant!” On a personal level, I asked Tamara what she loves about taking care of her own hair, especially as she lives such a hectic and glamorous lifestyle, and what beauty products does she swear by? “Well, like most ladies I love having my hair blow dried”, she replied, before adding, “...and in between blow dry’s I love using SHOW Beauty »

dry shampoo which gives volume and adds shine and texture to my hair. My go-to beauty products are the likes of dry shampoo, lip balm, hand cream... and I love a good gel manicure!”. Show dry also offer services to men and children. Staff at SHOW DRY have extensive technical and creative expertise, ensuring that customers get brilliant results: all based on the chain’s renowned timeefficient service. Glamorous blow dry’s, stunning braids, treatment masks, hair enhancement, sleek and sophisticated updo’s, plus an in-salon bridal service, are just some of the services on offer. You’d imagine that Tamara Ecclestone’s world is one where she gets little opportunity to chill, but she admits that she loves making time to “be with my family and just chill. There’s nothing I like more than putting my hair up, and living in my pyjamas, ha, ha! I can’t wait until I get home and put my pyjamas and slippers on. I love that.” And it’s not the most conventional of homes, too, as it Chez Tamara boasts nine dogs and a pig (“it’s supposed to be a micro-pig, but it’s definitely not! Fifi loves our pig.”)! For discerning ladies who like to make an effort, and to do so in beautiful, cool surroundings (including a VIP cabana and bar), there really is only one place to head for. And Tamara’s plans don’t stop here... “I’d love another baby one day, but that will probably wait a while, whilst in a business sense I’d like to expand what I’m doing now - and I’m looking to launch a kids’ line too, probably online. Exciting times!”

SEVEN CLA SSIC E SSENTIAL JACKETS

BY HARRIET BYC ZOK

Trends come and go but here are seven classic essential jackets you need to have in your wardrobe. With these trends being re-invented season after season there is one for everyone no matter what your personal style.

Blazer The blazer is a classic staple for your wardrobe all year round. With the transition into autumn throw your blazer over your party dress or over your jeans and t-shirts for those off duty moments. Wearing a blazer means you can go anywhere without feeling scruffy in just one step. It’s one of the few pieces that are great for both casual and smart occasions. Worried about looking too formal in a black blazer? Try this houndstooth MSGM blazer. MSGM HOUNDSTOOTH DOUBLEBREASTED BLAZER £455.00

2

Denim jacket The denim jacket, its not just for teenagers and hipsters. As one of the most traditional trends its evolved so much which make it easy to find one perfect for you. If you’re worried about looking too young then try a darker denim, I love this JBrand denim jacket as it has a feminine shape and can be worn on its own fastened up. If you live in jeans and are scared of double-deniming then try a pair of black jeans. Perfect for those grab and go moments it is also incredibly comfortable. J BRAND FLOURISH RUFFLED-HEM DENIM JACKET £250.00

Parkas Parkas have stood the test of time and if there is time to buy one its now. Parkas are finally fashionably acceptable and stylish parkas are now beginning to exist. Something warm often trumps style in the colder months and you finally don’t need to compromise. Not only are parkas super warm and it means you don’t have to wear lots of layers underneath, they have hoods which tailored coats often don’t have for when the rain catches you unprepared. This Kenzo piece is clean and trendy but most importantly warm. KENZO GREEN FUR-TRIMMED SHELL PARKA £710.00

Bomber Jacket With sports lux still being relevant in autumn winter trends, the bomber is back with a revamp. I love this Gucci leather bomber with a pop of red. The bomber looks great without trying too hard and oozes cool with a casual edge. The smart thing about the bomber is there aren’t really any rules to follow, they look great with practically anything. GUCCI LUREX-TRIMMED LEATHER BOMBER JACKET £2,270.00

Classic Winter Coat

Every season coming across the perfect winter coat you are going to wear for the next few months is hard to come by. You need to wear your winter coat with most of your outfits which is why I love this Grey Wool coat from Alexander McQueen. Keeping it back to basics means your coat can flatter any outfit its thrown over. Although investing in the latest trendy coat might seem tempting, choosing a smart colour such as black, grey or camel means you’ll get more wear out of it. Wool means it will keep you snug but keep you looking chic. ALEXANDER MCQUEEN GREY WOOL COAT £2,695.00

7

Leather Jacket

The trench is probably the most flattering jacket and is still having a moment. With a simple tie at the waist it can give anyone an hourglass figure. It is perfect for rain or shine but also for layering under your coat when temperatures drop. The trench has been updated numerous times which is why I love Stella McCartneys take on it. Although sticking to the traditional neutral colours the check gives it a more unique look.

As a regular feature in a women’s wardrobe if there is any jacket worth investing in its the leather jacket. Still featured on catwalks, magazine covers and spotted on all the trendiest celebrities the leather jacket has been reinvented year after year with tassels and pastel colours but if you get it right it can be worn for a life time. If you’re going to only buy one, I love this classic biker jacket. It can be styled with jeans to look more punk but with skirts and dresses to add an edge to more feminine pieces.

Wedding Planner Emma Marygold

WEDDING RULES:

THERE ARE NO RULES “

eddings aren’t what they were – in the old days, the big day was beset by rules,” says wedding planner Emma Marygold. “Today my brides enjoy having fun finding something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue - but apart from that, they want a wedding completely unique to themselves and their partner. Traditional wedding days can offer a rough framework, but once couples start to work with me they realise absolutely anything is possible. Every wedding I create is about wowing the couple and the guests with the freshest and most exquisite visuals throughout the most perfectly flowing, joyful day.” It always makes sense to hire a wedding planner – a wedding is a production and it needs a director. What makes Marygold weddings different is that they don’t feel like someone else has taken over – they feel absolutely embedded in the values and aesthetic of the individual couple. What unites Emma’s jaw-dropping portfolio is the flawless planning, organisation and delivery of each event - and the delighted client testimonies that arrive straight after. How does she get it so right every time? Because she absolutely adores what she does: “Weddings are my true passion. I love meeting new couples, finding out the ingredients for their dream day, and making it all happen.” Emma’s ideas come from upcoming trends in fashion and interiors, travel abroad, trips to inspiring international stores - even visits to exceptional gardens: “Nature offers so many moods and of course it plays a huge role in weddings,” she says. Trees are current favourite: “ I created

120

a Maytime wedding for Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill which was an absolute delight - we adorned the reception with blossom trees in full bloom. I took a great deal of time sourcing the perfect trees and installing them in the luxury venue. THE BEST LOOKING WEDDINGS FOR 2018/19: DRESS COURTESY OF SUZANNE NEVILLE

WHAT’S ON EMMA MARYGOLD’S DESIGN RADAR:

AN ALL WHITE WEDDING:

A WEDDING OF UNPARALLELED LUXURY:

A DELIGHTFUL BRITISH SUMMER WEDDING:

SIMPLY STUNNING

HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

MAGICAL PRETTINESS

THE VISION:

THE VISION:

THE VISION:

“I love to use white in the weddings I create – it’s timeless and works at any point during the year. Here, I’m envisaging guests entering through a silky white walkway adorned with pearls – the heavenly scent of jasmine floats in the air. In your all-white marquee, floral walls of gypsophila installed by my fantastic floral team are romantically backlit - creating a dreamy space. There are soft romantic voile drapes, perspex tables filled with white petals lit entirely by candles and fairy lights, oysters served in shells with edible pearls and a champagne tower backdrop.”

“Let’s go glam and then some – we’ll take your guests straight into a scene of pure Hollywood glamour: Arrive in the style of the Great Gatsby to a venue filled with lavish, deliciously scented floral arrangements, silver place settings, serious lighting, an orchestra playing,... Guests will be welcomed by tailcoated waiting staff and lead down to an art deco bar where they’ll be served your very own signature cocktail. You’ll dance the night away under the stars.”

THE DETAILS:

“Brides who love the Hollywood heyday look should check out the smooth-silhouetted gowns from Reem Acra’s spring 2018 collection. Reem adorned her gorgeous, sleek dresses with exquisite jewels from Tiffany & Co. When I saw these looks they just blew me away - I could see this jewellery inspiring an entire wedding on its own!” A dash of black can really accentuate wedding glamour. A dark sash around the waist, as styled by Carolina Herrera, adds extra definition; large flower corsages shown by Vera Wang also work with this theme. For grooms seeking to channel the silver screen, Versace is doing some stunning vertical stripes, and Alexander McQueen has sharp suiting in the blackest of blacks,” says Emma.

“Your guest’s first sense that this will be a super special wedding is when their bespoke invitation arrives. It isn’t made of paper at all – it’s a beautiful glass terrarium encapsulating a miniature forest. On the day itself, we’ll create another world – a beautiful petal-strewn trail leads towards the venue, where the entrance is bedecked with flowers and topiary. Inside, your guests look up to a hanging garden. Each table is set beneath its own magical tree complete with hanging surprises. A sumptuous feast is served, followed by the cutting of the enormous, enchanting Choccywoccydoodah cake … delight and entertainment abounds…”

With such a bold scheme there is only one place for the men to go – Hugo can dress you head to toe in white. Brides should take a look at Caroline Castigliano’s 2018 stunning spring collection - it celebrates romance, with classic lines and beautiful fabrics.

THE DETAILS:

THE DETAILS: “Brides who want to channel this really pretty, whimsical wedding vibe will love Suzanne Neville’s 2018 Posey dress from her Belle Epoque collection. Covered in petals with a full skirt that feels modern and fun, it’s a magical delight. Grooms should consider gorgeous blush hues – Fendi is doing some gorgeous pale pink suits right now. I think men look wonderful in pink - gentlemen, be brave!”

MEET THE FOUNDER After graduating from University last Summer, I was approached by Design Agencies in London to complete 4 months of Internships. Whilst I was there I was asked to create a digital ‘headshot’ of myself and my fellow intern for a footer on a blog post. As someone in the studio expressed how funny the likeness was, this sparked the idea of Faced! I finished my internships just before Christmas and headed back up home to North Yorkshire. That night I created Facebook and Instagram accounts and within 24 hours I had plenty of orders to keep me busy for the weeks running up to Christmas. It was crazy but so exciting. I just want to make people smile at the end of the day and I am grateful I can make a living doing so. H AT T I E TAY L O R - G E L L

LOOK

FOR LONGER

If 50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30 someone must be getting it right. Top beauty and skincare expert, Lesley Reynolds shares her Harley Street Secrets...

here has never been more acute pressure to look ‘well’ and ‘glowing’ regardless of the neglect we show to that most precious of organs, our skin. After the dark months of stuffy indoor living there is a myth fuelled by selfies and airbrushed celebrity snaps, that the spirit of summer can be embraced by binning the bobble hats and the BB cream and launching our happy, shiny faces out there. Renowned experts Dr Aamer Khan and his wife Lesley Reynolds, founders of the famous Harley Street Skin Clinic are under siege from a vast celebrity clientele desperate to achieve this fresh and natural look. Dr Khan became a full time Cosmetic Doctor in 2005 and has dedicated the past 12 years to perfecting anti-ageing skin treatments. Renowned for his finely-tuned aesthetic eye and his very gentle and subtle approach to cosmetic enhancement, Dr Khan specialises in ground breaking non-invasive treatments, focusing on the face and neck, and primarily designed to keep the surgeon’s knife at bay. Dr Khan does not focus his attention purely on the stars, as he has helped thousands of men and women – including injured soldiers in Afghanistan - each with a different concern, to look good and feel as good as they can. In fact, the clinic has set up its own charity ‘Back on Track’ to support injured service personnel

and burns victims. Dr Khan explains how the charity was founded: “I met a lovely 21 year old boy who was a double amputee and burns victim and I fell in love with his wonderful spirit and girlfriend and wanted to do all I could to help them.” At the swish premises in Harley Street Dr Khan goes on to outline the Harley Street Skin Clinic’s philosophy: “Nowadays, women and men want maximum results with the minimum recovery time. For almost every

surgical procedure, there is now a non-invasive option which means, no downtime, minimal discomfort and a much speedier recovery.” His wife Lesley, the successful author of the bestselling ‘Look Younger for Longer’ and a regular guest on This Morning and Lorraine, has been a tour de force in the skincare world for decades. Lesley trained and worked in the US, pioneering her own cosmeceutical skincare products through intensive scientific research. She believes that the key is to nourish your skin on a daily basis, not just depend on a monthly facial to do the hard work all in one go. Both Lesley and Dr Khan are evangelical that cosmetic surgery should never be the first point of action when gentle and effective alternatives are available. The clinic has pioneered a ‘5 Point Instant Facelift’ which is gentle, quick and effective. As Lesley comments: “Non-surgical treatments are now more popular than going under the knife and very good results can be achieved in the hands of a skillful injector.” As to which procedure to recommend, it really depends on the concern, if its sagging skin around

the jowls, PDO or Silhouette Soft sutures can lift it nicely and naturally. If it’s a loss of volume in the temples and cheeks, dermal fillers can help to replace the deficit beautifully. Fine lines and wrinkles on the cheeks can be ‘ironed’ out with radio frequency treatments such as Forma. Nose to mouth lines can be reduced by lifting the cheeks with threads, or with dermal fillers. There’s so much to talk about, that really, only a thorough consultation with a practitioner can help you make an informed decision. “The key is quality. So many consumers splash out on drugstore products in hope of seeing an instant difference but your skin will only react to a product that is matched to you. Whatever imperfection you want to change, whether you have dry or ageing skin, we will have a noninvasive product for you.” We asked Lesley about the ongoing success of the clinic and how she and Dr Khan work together to provide a bespoke treatment for each client: “With over 30 years of combined experience in aesthetics we have pioneered a lot of combination treatments. By combining treatments you get the very best results. There is something to suit everyone, the young who may have blemishes to deal with, a combination of skincare, mild skin peels and PDT can work wonders, to anti-ageing treatments for both men and women, using dermal filler, PDO dissolvable sutures and muscle relaxing injections, we can treat almost anything. Silhouette Soft Sutures have revolutionised this industry and I believe been the biggest move forwards since Botox was introduced in the late 90’s. “We have developed The Five Point Instant Facelift. It is a technique which The Harley Street Skin Clinic has mastered and developed having extensive experience with different types of threads. A small entry point is made with the help of a local anaesthetic, through which threads are placed in the subcutaneous layer of the skin. The threads are tightened leading to improvement

in nose to mouth lines, and lifting loose jowls. The threads completely dissolve over a period of several months, stimulating collagen production in the process. It takes a mere 45 minutes and is an excellent alternative to a mini face lift.” Modern treatment techniques are in high demand, with laser treatment and fat removal regularly requested. The most well-known option is Viora Reaction, a popular treatment for cellulite and loose skin which is clinically proven, safe and painless. Co2 laser, PRP, and Recell and other cellular treatments are effective for some forms of stretch marks and another trailblazing therapy is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to stimulate hair growth, either on the head or eyebrows. As this is a non-surgical hair loss treatment the downtime is minimal. Bikini bodies seek skin tightening at least 6 weeks pre-holiday, hair removal-IPL and Botox to stop under arm sweating. Lesley reveals that the most popular treatment is blepharoplasty: “This is a treatment to remove excess skin from the eyelids. Under a local anaesthetic, a small amount of loose skin is removed from the upper eyelid crease to take away a tired heavy look. Similarly, excess tissue and fat can be removed from the lower lids

to take away ‘bags’ and wrinkly skin. It is one of the quickest ways to look fresh and less tired!” Lesley’s expertise is sought after throughout the world and she has had great success with her celebrity clients, all of whom are more than happy to be cited. Lesley modestly says she cannot remember them all but it is no secret that she treats Claire Sweeney, Andrea McLean, Stephanie Beacham, Patsy Kensit and Abbey Clancey to name but a few. All of whom look pretty amazing and beautifully natural. Finally, Lesley adds that the one most vital ingredient in maintaining a youthful appearance is to stay positive and happy. Eating well and using a high SPF also top the list, as she says, skin’s worst enemies are sun, stress and sugar. In addition, Lesley recommends regular massage and advises that paying attention to dry hands and feet is an essential complement to routine. She has actually, got a cream for that! “Let’s face it we all want to look as good as we can for as long as possible. Lines and wrinkles, thinning lips, sun-damaged skin and sagging jowls are all signs of age, but with a little bit of help it’s possible to roll back the years, look revitalised and rejuvenated.”
