2018 is the year of the Gold Coast It is hard to fathom that the Gold Coast was only gazetted by the Queensland Government in 1959! In fact our first high-rise, the Kinkabool Apartment Building was under construction that same year and is now heritage listed. Since then, there have been major milestones, including the upgrading of the Pacific Highway in the 1990s and of course the construction of the light rail with stage 2 completed in December last year. 2018 will see more milestones with the Commonwealth Games in April and the opening of the Coomera Town Centre later in the year. With $12.5 billion invested in infrastructure projects and an estimated population of 800,000 people forecast within the next 15 years there is a lot to look forward to. So what else can we expect this year? With visitor numbers exceeding 13 million annually, the currently under construction Topgolf at Oxenford will become a major attraction for locals and tourists alike. The threelevel, 65,000-square-foot venue will closely resemble the Topgolf model in the United States. A new ‘super stage’ was also built at Village Roadshow Studios to host the squash tournament during the Commonwealth games. The largest sound stage in the southern hemisphere, it has already been used to film the blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok and its giant water tank was used recently during the filming of James Wans Aquaman. Developer Stockland successfully launched its first land release at its $180 million, 116ha waterside project at Coomera last year. The Foreshore Coomera residential development is between the Coomera River and Oakey Creek and will include 750 homes along 2.5 kilometres of river frontage. Another project planned for the area is a six-storey mixed use mid-rise planned for a 1.7ha Foxwell Road site just two kilometres from the town centre. The Marina View building, put forward by developer Foxwell Road Centre, will feature ADVERTISING & EDITORIAL ENQUIRIES Ben Ryan m: 0432 545 995 e: ben@advcollab.com.au
a ground-level shopping centre, a floor of offices in its podium and four levels of units. Pimpama Pit Stop on Pimpama-Jacobs Well Road, is well and truly underway. It will feature a petrol station, car/dog wash, and food outlets including Hungry Jacks, Zarraffas and Subway. The Pimpama City complex is set to open in late 2018 and will include two supermarkets, about 26 speciality shops and a tavern. Two other major supermarkets are planned for Ormeau's Eggersdorf Road and Upper Coomera's Brygon Creek Drive. In addition there is the Go-Zone on the corner of Attenborough Boulevard and Yawalpah Road at Exit 49 which has also commenced and includes 7-Eleven and Coffee Club, Pimpama Central Shopping Centre on the corner of Dixon Drive is also well underway and there is a proposed new aquatic centre and sports precinct slated for Heritage Park, Pimpama which will include Olympic pool, gym, 25m pool and learn-to-swim pool, three multipurpose sports fields, 12 tennis courts, six netball courts and dressing rooms. And finally, Picnic Creek State School opened its doors in January and is located between Amity Road and Edwardson Drive with access being off Edwardson Drive which has a capacity of 542 students. But the focus for now is on the commonwealth games. Check out our surviving the games for locals article on page # 7. Jason & Sandra Directors *Accurate at time of publication

CIVIC PRIDE STARTS AT YOUR DOORSTEP
Last year, the Gold Coast was awarded the title of World Kindness City.
The clean-up day has evolved to become the largest event of its kind in the country.
Judges spent two years looking across the globe for a city that displayed the values and compassion worthy of such an award. To win this award underscores to me what is great about our city. Ultimately, it is the people and the way we rally around each other and share such passion and pride in our piece of paradise.
Last year, we collectively picked up 280 tonnes of litter from across the coast. Let’s do it again and showcase our amazing city to the rest of the world.
Our civic pride was reinforced last year when the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games organisers put out a public call for volunteers. Organisers wanted 15,000 volunteers – and 47,000 registered. It is that type of community spirit which makes being Mayor such a privilege. On 4 March this year, we have another opportunity to show off our community pride, when the annual Clean Up Australia Day activities are held. Let’s all pull up our sleeves, put our gloves on, clean up and get our city shining before the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Registering is simple – host a site of your own or join an existing site by visiting cleanupaustraliaday.org.au

SURVIVING THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES The Gold Coast is hosting the biggest event in Australia this decade!
What’s happening in the Coomera area during GC2018?
This once in a lifetime opportunity will see 70 Commonwealth nations and territories take part in 11 days of competition from 4th – 11th April 2018. With one million plus ticketed spectators, 6600 athletes and officials and an estimated 1.5 billion television audience, the Gold Coast is on the world stage. During this time, travel is likely to take longer. There will be increased pressure on all Gold Coast networks. Coomera (CSC) and Oxenford (OXN) are in the Games Route Network (GRN). The GRN is a series of designated road routes linking the Commonwealth Games Village to the competition venues. This is the most efficient means of facilitating safe, secure and reliable transport for the athletes and officials so they can arrive at competition events on time. There will also be 13 park ‘n’ ride facilities across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. There will be safety and security zones around the venues with over 3,500 police, 4,200 security and 2,000 defence personnel across the area. If you are planning on attending as a ticketed spectator please note there will be no parking permitted at any venue. There will be shuttle bus services from all rail stations, the use of local bus, rail and G:Link services as well as the park ‘n’ ride sites.
The new, multi-purpose Coomera Indoor Sports Centre will host the Netball finals plus both the Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics events. There will be competition events at Coomera nearly every day of GC2018. What will be different? There will be a range of temporary changed traffic conditions in and around Coomera during GC2018, including road and lane closures, changes to parking and load zones, bus stop and timetable changes. Some residents and businesses will require local access permits. With so much happening in Coomera the whole area will be busier with more people, more traffic and heightened security measures.

TOP BUSHWALKING TRAILS ON THE GOLD COAST WALKING SHOULD BE JILL CALLCOTT’S MIDDLE NAME BECAUSE SHE LIVES AND BREATHES IT.
She moved to the Gold Coast from the UK when she was 12 and attended Burleigh Heads State School back when it was okay to go school barefoot. Her love of walking grew over the years but deepened as her work took her overseas and she frequently she ate takeaway meals late at night. She was always looking for ways to walk it off and over the years noticed many people taking their morning or afternoon walk through corridors of hotels. Ms Callcott wanted locals and visitors to the Gold Coast to be able to explore the city on foot so she started a website, Walking The Gold Coast, where she records her walking activity and provides maps, photos and a running commentary of her adventures. “It is truly only by walking an area that you can get the essence of it, and compared to other parts of the world this is still a very safe area to enjoy nature through walking. The reality is there are some great bushwalks right here on the Gold Coast where you can soak up the tranquility of the bush and hear and see wildlife,” she said. “You don’t have to travel to the hinterland to enjoy it; most can be accessed by public transport and a short walk. In Burleigh alone you can criss cross from Burleigh Headland to Burleigh Ridge and on to Tallebudgera Conservation Park and back to Burleigh Village for lunch across 26km including back tracking, all while never being too far from a coffee.” Ms Callcott said Federation Walk was another example of a fabulous track where walkers travelled more than 8kms to the Seaway and back through bushland. The popular walk gave walkers the chance to soak up the local birdlife and stand on sand dunes while looking at a deserted and windswept beach. “Scanning the surround you’ll see the high rises of Surfers Paradise and behind the tops of high rises in Main Beach. After your bushwalk, take yourself off to Tedder Avenue for a refresh and relax. One thing we should remember is that bush walking quite often involves urban walking to, and this too can be rewarding, just getting out into another area away from your patch is good for you,” she said.
TOP 5 SHORT BUSHWALKING TRAILS ON THE GOLD COAST AS PICKED BY JILL.
TOP 5 LONG BUSHWALKING TRAILS ON THE GOLD COAST AS PICKED BY JILL
1. TALLEBUDGERA CONSERVATION PARK On the Burleigh Heads side you can view the pristine waters of Tallebudgera Creek; it’s also very quiet and full of birdlife particularly in the early morning.
1. COUGAL HIKING TRAIL (10KM) Mount Cougal borders Qld and NSW and the only guide is the barbed wire fence that separates the states. The terrain is diverse, a hiking pole is recommended and it’s not for the faint-hearted. Check with National Parks before embarking on this trail because storms can impact on the area and make sure the forecast is for a clear day.
2. PALM BEACH PARKLANDS There are two walks here, the first is Beree Badalla Boardwalk along Currumbin Creek and it’s best to do this during high tide to get the feeling you are walking on water. The next is Tarrabora Reserve; a small pocket of bushland right in the middle of the Gold Coast, wedged between the Gold Coast Highway and Currumbin Estuary at Palm Beach. 3. COOMBABAH LAKELANDS – SHELTER ROAD Insect repellent is a must and there is a short bushwalk before the boardwalk; which is a bright burnt orange colour and such a contrast to the surrounding mangroves. At the end of the boardwalk is a bird hide and the only sound is water lapping against the timber piers. 4. COUGAL CASCADES – CURRUMBIN VALLEY This is part of the Gold Coast Hinterland just a few kilometres up Currumbin Creek Road. A scenic winding road full of photo opportunities which finishes at the Springbrook National Park. The Mount Cougal Section a short bushwalk with cascading waterfalls and cool mountain air, a hidden gem that few Gold Coasters visit. 5. BURLEIGH HEADLAND – UPPER OR LOWER TRACK A short climb to Tumgun Lookout is worth the effort, views of the southern Gold Coast as far as the eye can see and the lookout on the north side is equally picturesque. The headland is also a refuge and feeding area for a variety of migrating birds, so keep an eye out for unique birdlife along the walking tracks.
2. FEDERATION WALK (7KM) Federation (Bush) Walk features headlands and windswept dunes, winding trails through groves of Macaranga trees and She-Oaks. The trail ends directly opposite south Stradbrook Island, which is only a short distance across the Seaway. 3. SOUTH STRADBROKE ISLAND You can walk right around South Stradbroke Island and while you’re totally isolated you’re only minutes from a refreshing beverage. Downside is the lack of transport access. The Island is 21km in length and 2.5km wide. 4. COOMBABAH LAKELANDS Only a stone’s throw from Harbour Town Shopping Centre, Coombabah Lakelands track is full of wildlife, bush and wetlands. Kangaroos are prolific, swamp wallabies are around and there are plenty of koalas to see. With over 1000 hectares of land you can choose how far to hike. It has an amazing diversity of bird and plant life and is arguably the best place to view koalaa and kangaroos in the region. 5. NERANG STATE FOREST Nerang National Park and Nerang State Forest is 12km from Surfers Paradise, on the north-west outskirts of Nerang. Here you can explore dry rainforest and open eucalypt forests on a scenic bushwalk, horse ride, or you can cycle along one of the designated mountain-bike tracks. There are various tracks and distances to choose from.

AMBITIOUS IN SPORT IN THE SHADOW OF THE MASSIVE $1.5 BILLION CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM FOR THE 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES, THE GOLD COAST’S LARGEST UNIVERSITIES HAVE BEEN UNDERGOING A DEVELOPMENT BOOM OF THEIR OWN.
Last year, Swimming Australia president John Bertrand opened the Bond Sports Centre, while earlier this year Griffith University officially launched its new FINA-accredited Aquatic Centre. These were the latest multimillion-dollar investments by Gold Coast universities in sport, which is widely recognised as enhancing student outcomes. Clearly, it was also a message that sport in education has just become serious business on the Gold Coast. As a Commonwealth Games city, it’s no surprise that the Gold Coast’s three universities – Griffith, Bond and Southern Cross – are all members of the Elite Athlete Friendly University program. The program was established by
the Australian Institute of Sport to support elite athletes who choose to study by accommodating the flexibility they need to perform at their best.
employers want in graduates,” Mr Nucifora says.
However, it’s since become apparent that sport offers opportunities for a broader student cohort than just top athletes.
The momentum has been building at Bond since 2012, under the stewardship of sport-loving Vice Chancellor Professor Tim Brailsford who saw great value in establishing the Bond Institute of Health and Sport off campus at Robina.
As executive director of sport, Garry Nucifora has been leading Bond University’s charge to elevate sport as a strategic pillar for the university.
The facility, which has a heavy focus on research and sports science, also includes the award-winning High-Performance Training Centre.
It’s sometimes referred to as ‘edusport’, where participation in sport at all levels has been proven to improve the employability of students.
This is a teaching and training hub for national and international athletes and sports bodies, including the Wallabies and Adelaide Crows.
“That’s because the values, attitudes and beliefs of sports align very well with the same values attitudes and beliefs that
This was another significant piece in the sporting puzzle that began coming together in earnest after the Gold Coast
“For obvious reasons, new infrastructure is attracting a large number of sporting events, teams and sporting organisations to the Gold Coast – which can only benefit local industries like education, sport and tourism,” says Sports Super Centre director Brendan Flynn. secured the rights to the Commonwealth Games back in 2009. It could be said that the Games, and the new sporting infrastructure and upgrades accompanying the event, have done more to heighten awareness of the strength of the region’s sporting credentials than at any other time. The enhancement of training facilities has led to more athletes relocating to the region, with many combining university studies with training. This, along with the growth of sporting scholarships, saw Griffith University field the largest cohort of students of any Australian university to compete at the Rio Olympics in 2016. “The Gold Coast is now literally a breeding ground for elite athletes
across a number of different sports, which is great to see,” says Duncan Free, director of Griffith Sports College at Griffith University. The Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay is playing its part in that ‘edusport’ narrative following a $5 million upgrade. Originally established as a training venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, it is now an official training venue for GC2018. “The GC2018 upgrades to the Sports Super Centre have reinvigorated our ability to provide local, national and international athletes and students with worldclass facilities.” Mr Flynn is forecasting significant legacy benefits to the education sector from this investment well after the Games are done.
wearegoldcoast.com.au
Most potent is the ongoing development of student and athlete pathways into the sporting industry. “We work with a number of educational institutions on the Gold Coast by educating students through the medium of sport,” he says. “Post GC2018, our centre will continue to support grassroots to high performance sport for camps, training and events.” For Mr Nucifora, sport is a natural winning strategy for the education sector. He essentially sees sports at all levels as a ‘good news story’ that will continue to underpin the broader sporting phenomenon in education on the Gold Coast. “It’s now about telling our story to the world,” he says.

CRAFT BEER MOVEMENT SWARMS THE COAST THE CRAFT BEER SCENE HAS EXPLODED ON THE GOLD COAST WITH INNOVATIVE BREWERIES CONTINUALLY POPPING UP ACROSS THE CITY.
Local business people and even world surfing champions are recognising the burgeoning craft beer market as a smart investment and they are reaping the rewards. While this trend towards home-grown breweries is sweeping the world, the Gold Coast is establishing a reputation as a leader in the sector, with local breweries and brewers picking up national and international awards. Here is your guide to craft breweries in and around the Gold Coast… BALTER BREWING 14 Traders Lane, Currumbin World champion surfers Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson, along with pro surfers Bede Durbidge and Josh Kerr, are riding a wave of success after opening their own brewery. Balter Brewing’s first beer launched in March 2016 – Balter’s XPA, an Extra Pale Ale with a fruity palate that aims to punch your taste buds into the pleasure zone, joined by several other styles over the following months. BLACK HOPS BREWING 15 Gardenia Grove, Burleigh Heads It all started with an idea for an egg nog stout between three beer-loving mates and it resulted in the creation of Black Hops Brewing. The trio who founded the business, Dan Norris, Michael McGovern and Eddie Oldfield, documented their progress from that first home brew to the establishment of their Burleigh Heads brewery exhaustively through blogs, podcasts and social media. Now they have put it all together into a book, Operation Brewery, which is available online and in print and is an invaluable source of information for anyone with dreams of starting a brewery, and entrepreneurs in general. Opening the doors of the brewery in April 2016, tours and a tasting bar operate six days per week: Monday to Friday from 10am – 6pm and Saturday
from 12noon – 4pm. Black Hops beers are available at many venues across the coast including Ze Pickle, Cambus Wallace, Lester & Earl, Bine, Surfers Sandbar, House of Brews and The Glenelg Public House. Burleigh Brewing
BURLEIGH BREWING CO. 2 Ern Harley Drive, Burleigh Heads Burleigh Brewing began as a love story, when in 2002 Peta Fielding persuaded her American-born master-brewer husband Brennan to leave Hawaii and return to her homeland, with the vision of founding their own brewery in Burleigh Heads. Brennan has made beer in the US, Hawaii, Japan and Australia, consistently winning business and beer awards year after year, including wins at the World Beer Cup and the World Beer Championships. Burleigh Brewing is an ‘old but new’ brewery. While they use traditional methods of brewing (one of their beers, the Dunkelbier, is made from a 600-year old German Monastery Yeast, and brewed in strict accordance with the ‘German Purity Law’ of 1516), they’re in new territory using cutting edge science and equipment.

Passionate about their beer, Burleigh Brewing takes great pride in using local ingredients and packaging products, employing 35 locals and supporting local charities. Burleigh Brewing is now the largest Australianowned brewery in Queensland, recently moving to an expansive new premise which opened in March 2016.

RENTAL MARKET UPDATE The rental market in the established residential areas of the Northern Gold Coast are generally strong with limited vacancies and multiple offers on rental properties resulting in rising rents over the past twelve months. New investment estates in Pimpama, Willow Vale, Coomera and Upper Coomera have a large number of properties available for rent. A dwelling located in a predominantly investor estate is achieving $430.00 to $550.00 per week depending on the type of dwelling and features it may have. The ongoing supply of new investment properties to the market has resulted in increased rents and more growth for the area. This creates more jobs and opportunities in the Northern Gold Coast. Vacancy rates across the coast remain steady. At peak seasons the vacancy rates vary and in some cases there is not enough supply for the demand. November through to early January there was a high demand for rental properties
across the Northern Gold Coast. Demand continues to be strong for owner-occupier estates and low maintenance product such as duplex units and townhouse units. Coomera Waters demand is also strong with dry dwellings achieving $550 to $650 per week and waterfront prestige homes achieving $800 to $900 per week with rents increasing from twelve months ago . Features to obtain high rental prices include: pool, spa, boat dock, gated community, entertaining areas and acreage. With so much infrastructure and amenities either currently under construction or in the final phases of completion the northern end of the Gold Coast is growing more popular each year. Before purchasing your first investment or moving onto your next project make sure you investigate supply versus demand, landlord insurance and current yields in the area you are looking at. Naturally we have this information and are more than happy to assist at any stage of your investment journey.

REVEALING INTERVIEW WITH
PAU L E V E R E S T A B O U T U N I T A N D H I S N E W C O M PA N I E S PA R A D E R A N D E V R S T
As a child, motorcycles were my OBSESSION & they still are. I remember my Dad taking my younger brother and I to watch our first supercross race in Brisbane. I recall hearing the pyrotechnics going off, the smell of burning petrol in the air and the bright, glowing laser show emanating from within the packed stadium. Chills were going up my spine like electricity. But as my Dad walked back towards us from the ticket booth I noticed his head was down as he trudged along. I'll never forget his words, - 'sorry we can't afford to buy tickets' we were completely shattered and in tears as we drove out of the packed car park. I think that day affected my Dad too - A year later he bought me a BRAND NEW gleaming Yamaha YZ80. It was the GREATEST day of my life! Art was my 2nd passion. I was captivated by the pro's bikes and clothing in the magazines, I would draw motocross designs all over my school books. One day around 2001 whilst deciding which new Fox t-shirt to buy - I thought to myself... 'If I fuse my love of motocross and art I think I can make a better brand than this' I set about creating the star/spark plug logo. The name Unit came to me one night while lying in bed. With savings of $600 I bought a cheap screen printing carousel. My parents loaned me the use of their garage in Benowa. After a few months I noticed Unit sales grew from 1 tee a week to 8 tees per day. That's when I realised I had created something with HUGE potential. TIME LINE: 2002 Invested $600 into a website & 5 designs 2003 Told my boss at my day job (designing MX
magazines): "I Quit" 2005 Every Aussie Moto/bmx kid in Australia is wearing Unit and many tattooing the logo on themselves. 2006 Very Large Australian Retailers such as City Beach buy Unit Products by the PALLET. 2007 Phone is ringing off the hook with orders. Unit overtakes Fox in sales (in Australia) by double. 2008 Unit shipping out hundreds of items per day. Unit athletes winning world stage events. 2009 Wins Gold Coast Entrepreneur of the Year (Employing 60+ Staff) 2010 I almost die - Revived in Hospital after going too hard at Unit Christmas Party. 2011 Wins the Australian Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (N) 2012 Opens California office as we notice Unit starts to become 'over-saturated' in Australia. 'Size is the Enemy of Cool' (Industry Proverb) 2013 Australia's worst recession since 1930 hits extremely hard just as we are expanding into USA & Europe. Billabong and Quicksilver nearly collapse. 2014 Fallout is too severe - Unit is sold off to a foreign family living on the Gold Coast. I walk away completely to start a new chapter with not much more than the shirt on my back. 2015 Launch www.EVRST.com.au a custom apparel company that helps young brands become successful. Because I've made every mistake I figured I'm qualified! 2017 Launch www.Parader.co a new brand for a totally new generation! Now growing Five times faster than Unit did What I've learned: 1) Be very careful who you trust. 2) When one door closes in life, KICK-IN another. 3) Remember those who stayed by your side. 4) Life is over very fast, so F@#king Go For It!
