Orcollo 2014 Master of The Table

Shane Wins 9 Ball

Dennis Orcollo started down the road to Master of the Table by winning the Banks event. He would take 4th/5th in the One Pocket and then the 4th/5th in 9-Ball to lock in his first “Master of the Table” and $20.000. Second place and $3,000, would go to Shane Van Boening with his win in 9-Ball, 8th/12th finish in One Pocket and 11th/14th finish in Banks. A first place finish in One Pocket and 6th/9th finish in 9-Ball wold lock third and $2,000 for Efren Reyes, a five time winner of the award.

The 9-Ball Championship started with 263 players. This was the third and final point’s event for “Master of the Table”. This was old school 9-ball, 9 on the break counts, no jump cue but you can jump with your shooting cue, race to 9. By the final day there were twenty-nine players still remaining when play resumed in round 7. Round 8 had twenty players and two of the five undefeated would move to the one loss side, Niels Feijen Defeated John Morra and Carlo Biado defeated Shannon Murphy. Round 9 was down to twelve players and the remaining three players without a loss would have to use their re-buy, Shane Van Boening defeated Ruslan Chinahov, John Morra defeated Dennis Orcollo and Niels Feijen defeated Efren Reyes. Round 10 had nine players with Ruslan Chinahov getting the bye and since everyone had one loss there were four eliminations, Shane VanBoening over Carlo Biado, John Morra over Mike Dechaine, Jason Klatt over Niels Feijen and Dennis Orcollo over Efren Reyes. Round 11 had five players remaining with Jason Klatt getting the bye to move to the Semi-final round. The two eliminations were John Morra over Ruslan Chinahov and Shane Van Boening over Dennis Orcollo. We all know about the Filipino invasion in US Pool, well 2014 may mark the Russian invasion. There were a number of men and women players from Russia, with Ruslan Chinahov 6 PQB Febuary/March

showing great play and finishing 4th/5th in the 9-ball and Konstantin Stepanov advancing to the finials in the Straight pool. The stage was set for the Round 12 semi-finial. Shane Van Boening would get the bye and advance to the Round 13 final. Morra would face Klatt for the other seat at the final. The match would be back and forth getting to hillhill. But you can only have one winner and Morra took it down 9 to 8 to face Shane. Morra came out hot in the final taking the first two game. Shane finally got on the board in the third rack. Morra would take the next two racks to go up 4 to 1, two of the four being break and runs. But Shane doesn’t know the word quit, and takes the next two racks to take the score to 3 to 4. They would swap the next two games to get to 5 to 4, Morra. Shane breaking in rack 10 would break and run, tying the score. Rack 11 would see a golden break for Shane, making the 9 on the break to take his first lead. Rack 12 would also go to Shane but Morra would take rack 13, then break and run rack 14 to knot the match up at 7 all. Morra would win rack 15 to take back the lead and get on the hill. Rack 16 Morra would make a ball on the break but miss his next shot, with that opening Shane would run the table to take the match to Hill-Hill. Shane makes the 1 and 5 on the break but had to play safe on the 2. Morra can see the 2 and goes for a safe and the 2 falls with no shot on the 3, and opens the table. That was the opening Shane needed to run out to take the match and his third Derby City 9-Ball Championship.

Reyes Takes One Pocket Again

The One Pocket, started on Sunday with 298 players. This is the second of three point’s events for Master of the Table. Thursday the fifth and final day of play in the One Pocket there were 6 players remaining. The players that survived through 9 rounds of play were, Francisco Bustamante, Shannon Daulton, Scott Frost, Justin Hall, Efren Reyes and Josh Roberts. Two of the players were undefeated and had their re-bye going into round 10, Efren Reyes and Shannon Daulton. Round 10: Scott Frost eliminated Justin Hall in a quick 45 minute match. Efren Reyes eliminated Josh Roberts. Francisco Bustamante issues Shannon Daulton his first loss. Dennis Orcollo had the bye. Round 11: Shannon Daulton had the bye. Scott Frost eliminated Francisco Bustamante. Efren Reyes, still with no losses, eliminated Dennis Orcollo. The round 12, Semi-Final was set between Scott frost and Shannon Daulton, each with one loss. Efren, with no losses, had the bye. Scott was battling for his second DCC One Pocket title and Shannon was trying for his first. The battle between Scott and Shannon went almost 2 hours. Shannon came out the winner to face Efren in round final. Since Efren was undefeated, Shannon would have to double dip him to win. Shannon took the first rack and looked well on his way to the first win to start the double dip. The second rack didn’t go so well as Shannon gave Efren an opening and he ran out to take the second rack. The third rack was going well for Shannon until he missed a shot and opened the stack, Efren pounced and ran out. Shannon now down 2 to 1 in a race to 3 made his third mistake of the match in rack 4. He again opened up the stack. Yes, Efren capitalized and ran out to take the match and the 2014 DCC One Pocket Championship. This was Efren’s sixth DCC One Pocket Championship. Payouts for One Pocket: 1st - Efren Reyes - $12,000 2nd - Shannon Daulton - $6,000 3rd - Scott Frost - $3,355 4th/5th - Francisco Bustamante & Dennis Orcollo - $2,200

The Semi-finials and Finals were scheduled to start at 7 PM on Tuesday night. Round 13 had Dennis Orcollo drawing the bye and Francisco Bustamante playing Earl Strickland. Bustamante would take the match over Earl 3 to 1 to move to the final. The final was a re-match with Francisco Bustamante playing Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo who had just played in round 12. Dennis was on a mission to avenge his 12th round loss and took the first game 5 to 3. He would extend his lead to get on the hill in the second game taking it down, 5 to 0. Bustamante, was not giving up and took the third game 5 to 2. In the fourth game he came up dry on the break, but carried the game to the final ball. rack 8 is another Break and Run for Shane, now with a lead of 6 to 2. Rack 9 Shane makes 3 balls on the break but misses a 1 ball down the rail. Niels, happy to be back to the table, runs out the remaining 7 balls, bringing the score to 3 to 6. Rack 10 would be the longest game of the set with misses, safeties and full cue jump shots from Shane. Niels runs five balls to the 10 and misses. Shane does a full table bank of the 10, which splits the pocket to take the score to 7 to 3. Shane makes 2 balls on the break in the 11th rack and runs to the 10, raddling. Niels has a full table cut shot on the 10 about 2 ball widths from the pocket and misses. Shane again takes another rack increasing the lead to 8 to 3. Rack 12 Shane makes 3 balls on the break and scores his fifth Break and Run of the match, score 9 to 3. Rack 13 Shane makes the 5 ball on the break but no shot on the 1 so he pushes. Niels plays for a safe on the 1 but it rolls out to sell out. Shane makes easy work of the next 5 balls but had a tough bridge shot over the 7. But in Shane fashion he makes it and clears the table to go on the hill, 10 to 3. Rack 14 Shane would come up dry with one of his slower breaks at 26 mph. Niels came to the table determined and cleared the table to put the score at 4 to 10. Niels made short order of rack 15 with a Break and Run of his own, score 5 to 10. Rack 6 Niels breaks dry. Shane runs the 1, 2 and 3 but gets tough on the 4. He kicks the 4 but it rolls out open to the side. Niels takes advantage of the opening to clear the table, score 6 to 10. Rack 17 Niels made 2 balls on the break and plays safe on the 1. Shane, with no shot on the 1, makes and intentional foul to tie up the 6 ball to the 8 ball. Niels with ball in hand plays another safe. Shane is unable to get a hit and is on 2 fouls. Niels now with ball in hand makes the 1 and breaks out the 6 and 8. He then makes short order of the table to take the score to 7 to 10. Niels breaks good in the 18th rack making the 3 and 4 balls. I look to be a simple layout. He makes the 1 then the 2 but scratches. Shane with ball in hand runs out the remaining 6 balls to take the rack and the match. Congratulations to both players on some great pool and to Shane Van Boening for winning the 2014 Big Foot Challenge. The payout was: Shane Van Boening (.908) - $16,000 Niels Feijen (.875) - $8,000 Ralf Souquet - $4,000 Fransico Bustamante - $4,000 Numbers in parentheses are the Accu-Stats player rating for the match as calculated by Accu-Stats

Focus on Position by Tom Ross Contributing Writer

O

ne of pool’s enduring challenges is the ongoing conflict between pocketing balls and playing position. For beginners and intermediate players, trying to do both can cause fits while even top pros must confront the question from time to time. For most of us it often seems that we must make a choice since trying to accomplish both goals at once can short circuit the shot. Yet, when we apply our focus to one step of the process, it can feel as though we have to sacrifice the other. Every pool player knows the sting of solving a complex position riddle only to look back at the pocket and see the object ball thumbing its nose in a defiant refusal to drop? The best way to hone a skill is to isolate it in practice in order to focus the work on a specific task. Since almost all pool shots require pocketing the object ball and controlling the cue ball, we’re forced to manage both demands continually, making the desired separation of skills difficult to achieve in practice. It’s common to see players sharpening their shot making skills with no regard for the cue ball, but I’ve never seen anyone explore the other side of the coin to work on position play alone. As a recent experiment to help put a student in better touch with the cue ball, I offered the exercise we see in the diagram. If we repeat a shot that’s virtually impossible to miss, we can focus more completely on position play with no worries about the shot itself. Because the exercise allows complete focus on position play, it works well to develop feel for pinpoint control. To accomplish that you will need a target that you can move to various spots as you practice the shot. A piece of paper from a notepad will work or you can try one that I like to use, a paper circle cut to the size of a

10 PQB Febuary/March

CD. Whatever you choose for a target, mark a half-inch spot in its center to give you an exact goal for every shot. Place your target on the 1 and begin shooting the striped ball from both positions, A and B. Since the shot itself is a piece of cake you can use this exercise to enhance your grasp on some of the principles of position play. Number one, before making your stance for each shot, take a good look at the spot in the center of your target and tell yourself that is where the cue ball will land. The second principle of position play that position 1 illustrates is arriving at the target with a cue ball that’s moving away from the nearest rail. Whether shooting from cueball position A or B, a two-rail shot works best with the cue ball bouncing from the right side rail to the target. The best way to keep the cue ball from freezing on a cushion is to hit that cushion and rebound away from it. Move your target to position 2 to get in touch with the table’s center spot. From cue-ball position A use two rails with a little right-hand english. From B, it’s a one-rail shot. Stopping it on the exact center will demand perfect speed. Pay attention to the attempts that do not stop on the center spot to see if the cue ball is on that track. Remember one of pool’s most valuable principles: When moving around the table for position, a cue ball that rolls over the center spot cannot scratch. With that in mind and the cue ball at position A, move your target to the 3. Ideally on this shot your cue ball will roll over the center spot to hit the bottom left side rail and, employing the second principle, finish with a short bounce from the bottom rail to the target for four-rail position. Note how the right-hand english reverses off the third and fourth rails to hold the cue ball in the target area. For target 4, shoot

from B and go three rails, with some left hand english to land on the target with the same side-rail, bottom-rail finish on the right side of the table. Even though we only see four positions in the diagram, you can place the target anywhere on the table to hit as many different positions as your imagination will allow. And finally, as an added bonus, the exercise helps us with a skill that all players need but few practice. Because most pool shots require us to hit the object ball in one precise spot in order to pocket it, shots that offer a range of places to hit the object ball can sometimes baffle us. We typically have that kind of range whenever the object ball is hanging in the pocket as it is here. With that in mind we can also use the

exercise to learn how to choose the best spot to hit on the object ball to achieve the desired position when we have that luxury. So, even though the shot looks easy, it still calls for the same attention and precision as any pool shot.

2014 One Pocket Hall of Fame

Tuesday January 28 was the night for the One Pocket Hall of Fame award dinner. The dinner and web site are a labor of love of Steve Booth. The web site is OnePocket.org . There are awards for One Pocket, Bank Pool and Lifetime Pool in Action. The event is like no other Hall of Fame with stories flying from every direction. The room is always a buzz and presenters always have stories to relive about the inductees. Fred “The Beard” Bentivegna, Master of ceremonies started the evening off by reading the poem “You’ll Be Up Here Yet’ Cowboy Dennis to honor the greats that have passed. Recognized in the program were Ronnie ‘Fast Eddie’ Allen, Cole Dickson and George Fels who passed in 2013. The 2014 induction class was Cliff Joyner for One Pocket, Tony “Banks” Coleman for Legends of Bank Pool. Master of ceremonies Fred “The Beard” Bentivegna presented the inductees with their plaques. Both were so moved they even shed and tear, Tony said “It was easier to bet your own money and play than receiving this award in front of such great players and Hall of Famers”. Also Posthumous Honors for One Pocket went to Hubert Cokes and Harold Worst. Nick Varner would do the honors by telling about his time spent with Hubert Cokes known as

Spinning Speed Shot by Steve Markle, Ranked 6th Contributing Writer • SteveMarklePool.com

H

ere is a fairly simple yet entertaining shot that I recently selected on the 2013 ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots. I successfully made it on my first attempt and my opponent did as well. The object is to hit “A” ball with right or left hand english into the cue ball. The cue ball will go into pocket “B”. From the use of english after contact the “A” ball will begin to spin. While it is spinning you must shoot the 7 balls into “C” pocket and the other 7 balls into “A” pocket. All 14 balls must be pocketed before the “A” ball comes to a complete stop. Start off by placing 14 balls along the long center line of the table as shown. There must be 7 on the left and 7 on the right. Next place an object ball directly in the center of the line and a cue ball about 2 balls width away. For appearance

make sure all balls are in a straight line. When stroking “A” ball into the cue ball most tables will require at least a medium hard stroke. If you are playing on a table with fast cloth use a medium stroke. If the cloth is playing very slow use a hard stroke. Be sure to use a stop shot on the object ball so that you keep the cue ball positioned in the center. Also, I suggest using a stripe as your “A” ball to show the spinning effect more clearly. BD’s George Fels Dead At 75 Jan 3, 2014, 12:25 PM

G

eorge Fels, whose book, “Mastering Pool,” and monthly “Tips & Shafts” column in Billliards Digest taught and entertained pool lovers from more than 30 years, died Dec. 31 in Chicago after suffering a heart attack. Fels was 75. According to Fels’ son, Adam, George collapsed at home Dec, 27. He was rushed to Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, but never regained consciousness. Per his wishes, George was removed from life support after neurologists confirmed extensive brain damage from the heart attack. He died late in evening in New Years Eve. Born and raised in Chicago, Fels love of pool began early in life. An award-winning creative writer for some of the city’s biggest advertising agencies, Fels slipped away many afternoons to shoot pool at downtown Chicago’s famed Bensingers, about which he wrote on numerous occasions. After publishing the book, “Mastering Pool,” in the late ‘70s, Fels began contributing monthly columns to Billiards Digest in 1981. Over the next 33 years, Fels penned nearly 300 columns for the magazine. His columns were entertaining recollections of the game and its characters. His style was crisp, precise and hilariously descriptive. As billiard historian Mike Shamos of the Billiard Archive noted, “George said more in one page than most writers could in an entire book.” Mr. Fels is survived by sons Adam and Sam. 20 Years of the Mosconi Cup The Mosconi cup was born from a vision from snooker promoter Barry Hearn. Barry envisioned a tournament to honor one of the Greatest, Willie Mosconi. Willie passed away September 17, 1993 at the age of 80. Barry in a phone call to Flora Mosconi, Willie’s widow, he got her approval to name the tournament The Mosconi Cup.

T

he tournament is a similar format to the Ryder Cup in golf. It is a team event with the Best from Europe playing the Best from the United States. 2013 was a special year with it being the 20th Mosconi Cup and 20 years since the passing of Willie Mosconi who would have been a 100. The first even in 1994 had 8 players on each team. This included 2 women players and has been the only year that women have played. USA took the opener 16 to 12 over Europe. The next year, 1995, the teams would be trimmed down to 7 players each and Europe took a tight win 16 to 15. The USA teams won 1996 through 2001. 2001 would be the most dominating win by either team with the USA team wining 12 to 1 at York Hall, Bethal Green. In 1997 the teams were trimmed down to 6 players. 2002 at York Hall, Europe got their second win 12 to 9. 2003 would be the first year the Tournament was played on US soil at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas with team USA winning 1 to 9. This would usher in the play rotation from Europe to the USA. The USA team would take the next 3, 2003 through 2005. 2003 was also the first year that a MVP was selected.

The USA team for 2013 was: Johnny Archer (Playing Captain), Earl Strickland, Dennis Hatch, Rodney Morris, Shane Van Boening and Buddy Hall (Non-Playing CoCaptain). The European Team was: Johan Ruijsink (NonPlaying Captain), Darren Appleton, Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen, Karl Boyes and Mika Immonen. Team Europe seemed to be on a mission and avenge the 2001 thrashing at York Hall by massacring the USA team 11 to 2 in 3 days. The 2 USA wins were both in Doubles matches on the second day of play. The wins were, Earl Strickland with Shane Van Boening 6 to 5 over Darren Appleton with Mika Immonen and Shane Van Boening with Rodney Morris 6 to 5 over Mika Immonen with Karl Boyes. 2013 was also the first time since 2007 that either team The year 2006 was a special with the Tournament ending in had a playing Captain, Johnny Archer from the USA. Johnny a tie 12 to 12 and since the USA was the defending champion selected a Non-Playing Co-Captain, the Legendary “The Riflethey were allowed to retain the trophy. This tie brought about man” Buddy Hall. a major change in the tournament going forward it would be the first team to win 11 matches. 2007 would see the teams Every year there are changes in the tournament rules and down to 5 players with a non-playing Captain. Europe with format that keeps the tournament fresh and interesting. 2014 take the wins for 2007 and 2008 in the new format. The USA will see the tournament played at Blackpool Tower Circus, team would take the 2009 win, on home soil, at the MGM Blackpool, England. Congratulations to both teams for some Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. 2010 through 2013 Team Europe great matches and to Team Europe on a strong win. Professional Choking

by Tom Simpson, Master Instructor • PoolClinics.com Contributing Writer

It’s one of the most effective sharks: “Don’t choke!”

Everyone knows the easiest way to get someone to choke is to get them to think about choking. Even just getting them to think of the possibility of choking may be enough to set it off. It can come on like a disease, infect you for a while, and then fade away. In golf, it’s called the yips. Pool players have a few other four-letter words they tend to prefer. Choking is not pretty. It’s embarrassing. Players suddenly get rust in their arm, go blind, and lose their connection with the game. It jars their confidence, and before long, they become professional chokers. Choking is typically blamed on distraction or anxiety. Pool is a performance art. If we’re distracted or anxious, we can’t do it well. We might be distracted by the awareness that people are watching. Thoughts of failure take some of our intention away from performance. Sometimes we’re distracted by our own awareness of physical form details (“don’t drop that elbow”). Focus on physical form during practice. Play is performance. Anxiety is a tense bodystate. Worry, fear, and doubt all produce tensions and micro-movements in the body. We strive for years to attain some fluidity in our stroke. Tension interferes with fluidity. Anxiety can produce micro-tremors in our stroke arm. We get jerky. We choke. We are mortified by what we just did. A vicious circle begins. We can really pile on the pressure in pool. Ball-pocketing pressure, position pressure, winning pressure, losing pressure, score pressure, match pressure, tour22 PQB Febuary/March

nament pressure, opponent pressure, gambling pressure, status pressure, audience pressure… Our own high expectations for our performance are another source of pressure and anxiety. What are we to do? Top players seem to thrive under pressure. What are they doing? They are performing what they’ve “burned in” – their excellent pool game – under the high-pressure conditions in which they have become comfortable. It’s one thing to run a few racks by yourself in the comfort of your home. It’s another matter to perform the same feat in the finals of a tournament. Top players have spent a lot of time learning to perform under pressure. Some players can’t understand how anyone can play without a serious wager. They need some pressure to become motivated to perform. Gamblers will try to get a $5 a rack player to play for $50 a rack, expecting the pressure to get to him. We choke when we’re out of our comfort zone. Maybe we should train in a less comfortable zone?

Let’s squeeze some chokes out of our game:

When it’s time to play, focus on the results you want – not on monitoring or perfecting your form. When you get caught up in the details of what you’re trying to do, your body may get conflicting messages – and move accordingly. Self-consciousness detracts from performance. Don’t over-work it. If you find you’re spending too much time setting up on a shot, you’ve probably lost the general focus. Research indicates that, on the average, people can focus well for about 8 seconds. If you’re down longer than that,

you might want to back away and reset. If you’re seeing it, don’t slow things down. Slowing down can lead to self-consciousness, doubt, overthinking, over-adjusting – and choking. Trust your body to do what it knows how to do. Don’t try to play with a complex thought in your head. If you’re trying to score while thinking about how far back to swing the stick, where are your eyes, and how big is the trophy, obviously it ain’t likely to happen. Instead, choose a quality that you can express in one word (flow, smooth, soft, calm, sharp, rhythm…) and try to embody that. More than just one simple word, though, and you’re mired in thinking again, trying to consciously control things you don’t have time to control. Get comfortable with pressure by training under pressure. What makes you uncomfortable? Do some of that. Choose some practice games (Bowlliards, for example), play hard, and keep score. Dedicate score sheets to each practice and date your scores, so you know what you have to beat. How about when you’re terrified you’re going to choke? Don’t get fancy. Get simple. Shorten up your bridge a bit, take a short backswing, make the ball. Work through the challenges. Play tougher opponents. Go to a different poolroom. Play some tournaments. Put a little skin in the game sometimes. Feel the fear. Think of it as excitement. This is supposed to be fun, remember?

American Rotational National Championship Series II

Ten Players from across the country qualified for the American Rotation National Championship Series II which was held in conjunction with this year’s Derby City Classic at the Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana. All 10 players were guaranteed a minimum $1,000 for this 2 day event ensuring they would not lose money while competing on a national level, a main objective of the American Billiard Club Association, REDUCE PLAYER EXPENSES! Day 1 was held on Saturday Jan 25th with players separated into two 5 player round robin groups. Each player would play four matches of American Rotation to 125 points with the top 2 players from each group moving on to a four player single elimination finals. Groups A Had three players finishing with records of 3-1! The #1 tiebreaker after win loss records being head to head matches was of no use at all as Mike Dechaine (RI) the tournament favorite had a win over Rob Hall (AL), Rob Hall had a win over Ozzy Reynolds (VA) and Ozzy had a win over Mike Dechaine! Going to the third tiebreaker of balls won & lost by sent Mike Dechaine and Rob Hall into the semi finals with Ozzy playing great but missing the cut by 20 points. The B group was much clearer as Jerry Calderon (FL) finished with a 4-0 record and Joe Dupuis (MA) finished at 3-1 sending both players into the semi finals. Jerry would face the #2 seed of the A group, Rob Hall and Joe Dupuis would face fellow New Englander Mike Dechaine for spot in the finals. The first semi final match going to 150 points may have been the most exciting match of the event as it came down to the last rack with Mike Dechaine at 147 with the break ball in hand and Joe Dupuis at 133. Mike made 1 point on the break, had what looked to be a rather simply draw shot for the one to the two ball but came up SHORT and was partially hooked by the three ball. Mike fouled giving Joe ball in hand with 18 points left on the table, Joe would them all. In a very tense ending Joe cleared the entire table winning the match 150149 securing a spot into his second American Rotation national finals. The second semi match could not match the drama of our first. We saw Jerry Calderon take and stay in control for the entire match as Rob Hall was not only struggling throughout but could not seem to get anything to go his way either. Jerry is a very well rounded player, a tough competitor who will not make it easy on his opponents and this was the exact case here with Jerry securing his spot in the finals against Joe Dupuis. The final match was well played with Jerry again maintaining control but Joe “Never give up” Dupuis fought hard to stay in it. We were about two thirds of the way through the match when Joe came with a very tough position shot on the 8 ball

BUT called a foul on himself as he barely nudged the 11 with his cue as he followed through the stroke, a foul in American Rotation. This was a huge mistake with 14 points left on the table that would have tied the match but instead put Joe 28 points behind as Jerry cleared the rack. Jerry kept control and became the second ever American Rotation National Champion. Ten Players were here and all 10 were in the money upon arrival at DCC. Playing from behind is a tough task. I know . . . the other guy is at the hill and you need 3 more games: it stinks. You often feel beat already and start to wonder why you should even try when you “know you’re going to lose.” Here’s the trick: You’ve got to remind yourself that the goal is your performance on the shot you are shooting, not the winning of the match. I know this is difficult. When you start seeing and enjoying the beautiful mechanics of each shot, your mind will fade out that ugly score. I know you hear “stay in the moment” over and over. The moment is not the game you are in, it’s the single stroke you are about to perform. Get enjoyment out of your stroke and shot selection while letting the winning part of the game catch up on its own. Wow! Now the score is back to even, one beautiful shot after another did it. Believe me, the guy in the lead hates when someone “stays in the match”. Be THAT person . . . one awesome stroke after another. Febuary/March PQB 23

A

s many of you know by now our little brother Loyd Schonter didn’t make it into 2014, he suffered a fatal heart attack. He leaves a wife and 3 children, 2 grandchildren, a mother, brothers and sisters, sister-inlaws, brother-inlaws, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, and more friends and acquaintances than can be counted or mentioned behind with a deep sadness and hurt in our hearts that will be there for a long time to come. Many of you know Loyd but I just want to tell you a little about the man he become. He grew up as the little brother always looking up to his big brothers for recognition and acceptance, but I assure you those tables turned as he grew up to be our hero instead! This man’s brain never stopped. You couldn’t have a conversation with Loyd without him mentioning a new idea he had while laying in bed thinking at 3 in the morning. Sleep wasn’t necessary for him it was a waste of time there was too much to get done. This is reflected in the business he started in 1987 out of the back of a Honda accord that has grown to be one of the biggest amateur billiard leagues in the world (www.tapleague.com) If you were to go to the dictionary and look up the word Loyal, Loyd’s name would be there, if you looked up the word faithful, Loyd’s name would be there, if you look up the word compassionate, yes Loyd’ name is there! His heart was as big as his belly and when he looked at you with those big green eyes you were either very afraid or melting. When he walked into a room it was if a magnet appeared everyone was attracted to him, he owned the room. He was a motivator he could speak to a group of hundreds and have them on the edge of their seats and he did at events all over the country! The hurt and pain I am feeling today won’t go away for some time but I look to this scripture for encouragement and hope it can soothe and comfort many of you that knew my little brother Revelation 21:3,4 “with that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his 24 PQB Febuary/March

people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This is a promise we all have from Gods Word and as we look around the world we see so much of this pain and death. I look forward to the time when this promise that God made to all of us to come to fruition. The reason I know this is true is because at Titus 1:2 it states that God who cannot lie promised it! I want to thank each and every one of you that has commented on Loyd and know that we all appreciate the love and support that you have demonstrated! Good bye LITTLE BROTHER LOYD SCHONTER 1957-2013

President’s Desk

This is my farewell column. The election of the new board members has been completed, and the new board has installed Jim Shovak as the new USBA president. I am certain that Jim will achieve much as he guides the organization forward. I wish him and the other board members the best as they continue their hard work. I wanted to take the time to thank the USBA sponsors. At the top of the list is Gabriels, the official partner of the USBA. With Gabriels’ support, we were able to hold the three cushion nationals (our most prestigious event) in Las Vegas and at the Allen Hopkins’ Super Billiards Expo. This year, we’re heading to Paris Bida in Houston, where the national tournament will again be played on the best tables in the world—Gabriels. Simonis, Aramith and Tiger have continued their support of the USBA and billiards by providing cloth, balls and cues, respectively, for the tour and the national tournament. We are grateful for the assistance of these fine companies. A special nod goes to Professor-Q-Ball for keeping carom billiards in the news. Finally, I’d like to thank all of the many individuals who have contributed time, donated money, made suggestions and offered constructive advice during my term. You made my job easier and have helped the game of carom billiards grow. I hope to see all of you at some USBA event in the future. Please continue your support! Febuary/March PQB 27

The umpteenth Hood River USBA 3-cushion billiard tournament (future name The Russ Guppy Memorial) was held on November 15 – 17 at the Hood River Elks Lodge. Twenty-two hardy souls battered the wind and the rain to play this 3-day event. We had 12 “B” players and 10 “C” players divided into 3 groups: 7, 7, and 8. Two “B” players from each group went to the “B” finals and one “C” player plus a wild-card went to the “C” finals. Jesus Quinonez, a very good player from Seattle, won the “B” finals going the whole tournament undefeated. Neal Olson, another very good player from Seattle, lost his only game to Jesus. Walt Scott from far away in Vale, Oregon came in third and Tim Poole from Marysville, Washington was fourth. Tom Thomsen and Mark Williams, both from Medford, Oregon, came in fifth and sixth respectively. This was Mark’s first foray into the “B” ranks and will be someone to reckon with in the future. In the “C” division Dave Ehlers from Federal Way, Washington won decisively. Harold Reid from Burns, Oregon was second, Kevin Hay from right there in Hood River took third, and Ron Hopkins from Everett, Washington finished fourth. We had players from all over Oregon, Washington and even one from San Diego, California.

New Board of Directors Elected

The quadrennial election for USBA board members concluded on December 31, 2013. Based on the USBA constitution, as amended in 2013, the membership elected seven board members: Mazin Shooni (New Hampshire), Victor Cuzzi (Florida), Steve Andersen (Michigan), Ricardo Carranco (California), Pedro Piedrabuena (California), Jim Shovak (New York) and Jim Watson (New York). The USBA congratulates the new board members and thanks all of the candidates. Voter participation was very strong, and each of the candidates made a strong showing. The USBA also extends its thanks to the outgoing Board Members: Doug Deitel, Merrill Hughes, Andy Janquitto, Juan Elizalde Sauz, Raye Raskin, Felipe Razon and Tommy Thomsen.

New President

Jim Shovak, long-standing Secretary/Treasurer of the USBA, has taken another step in his long career of volunteer service and tireless support of the sport of three cushion billiards. The newly elected USBA Board of Directors, in one of its first official orders of business has elected Jim to the position of President. Jim will immediately take on the responsibilities of President while continuing his work as Secretary/Treasurer on an interim basis until suitable replacements are installed. Congratulations and best of luck to Jim!

New Secretary and New Treasurer Elected

The Board of Directors has also approved two members to very important positions. Tom Paley from Missouri will be the new USBA Secretary and Merrill Hughes from New York will be the new USBA Treasurer. Jim Shovak will be training both members all the ins and outs of the positions. Congratulations and the best of luck to Tom and Merrill!!!

The two shots in Diagram A typical position is shown at the left of Diagram 128. The surest way to handle it is to hit the first ball half full, using just enough left English to bring the cueball back across the table along the correct scoring path. After leaving the first rail, the cueball should have no English. The dashed line indicates roughly how much white ball to hit. The position at the right of the diagram is identical with the exception of the red ball, which is on the rail. If you use the same technique as before, the third target is very small. Instead, hit less of the object ball and bring the cueball back across the table with some English. Now when it hits the second rail, the reverse of “hold up “ English will tend to keep it more parallel with the end rail, enlarging the target.

2013 BCA Hall of Fame Inductees - Promoters and Lovers of the Game!

It is hard to describe the 2013 BCA Hall of Fame induction class. The two inductees bring some many thoughts and images to mind. They both have a Love and Passion for pool the game we love. The inductee in the Greatest Player category was Jeanette Lee. Jeanette took up the game at 18 and turned pro at 20 in 1992. She has overcome and endured physical problems all her life but has always been up for the challenges. She has over 30 titles ranging from WPBA tour stops and championships to ESPN championships. And even a Gold Medal for the United States in the 2001 World Games. She was inducted into the WPBA Hall of Fame in February 2013. Jeanette early in her career was nicknamed “The Black Widow”. She has parlayed the nickname along with her playing ability coupled with Love and Passion for the game into a true career. She had a vision and has turned that into a true business plan, gaining many sponsors. As the most recognized player in pool in the world, she is the Face of the APA. She even has non-pool sponsors as well such as Bass Pro Shop, who sponsored the reception at the HOF dinner. Jeannette is multifaceted, running this large business and having a great family of 6 with her husband George Breedlove, also a Pro player. The second inductee in the category Meritorious Service was the Chairman of Matchroom Sports, Barry Hearn. Barry started his professional career as an account. He became involved with Snooker in the 70’s. Matchroom under Mr. Hearn’s promotes many sports besides snooker such as boxing, bowling, golf, poker, darts and pool. He has sponsored over 70 world class pool events since 1993 which have paid out almost 10 million dollars. His signature event, The Mosconi Cup, now in its 20th year, started in 1994. Barry has parlayed his events into Live TV events with his partnership with Sky

Sports, viewed by millions around the world. Mr. Hearn’s has a Passion for pool and Vision that could help to take the game to the next level like the rebirth of Snooker in the 70’s. He was quoted “We have a company motto at Matchroom. If there’s no passion, there’s no point. We only promote sports that we love. That’s the situation with pool.” Congratulations to both Jeannette Lee and Barry Hearn the BCA Hall of Fame class of 2013. They will both continue to move pool to a higher level in the future.H
