love spring. Of all the seasons, spring is the one that demonstrates most clearly the transition from one season to the next, from one stage of life to another. Spring is a showcase for change and represents a fresh start and an exciting time ahead. Looking at this year's Sunshine Coast Women's Lifestyle Expo I could see that it too, after seven years was due for a fresh change, and I’m happy to share with you some exciting new additions to the expo.
Firstly, when you come to the expo this year you will notice we have undergone a facelift! We have changed the ‘look’ of the expo, updating it, in keeping with today’s trends. We have created a Gourmet Food Garden with an emphasis on healthy eating with organic and gluten-free foods. Our own home-grown food specialist, Tania Hubbard will be joined this year by a special guest – Luke Hines, celebrity chef from TV’s My Kitchen Rules. We have also planned a music festival, which promises to be lots of fun, and a fashion parade in our new Fashion Design HQ. Alongside our favourite regular exhibitors, this year will see us introducing some new and exciting products; and our workshops, which are always popular, will feature some new presenters sharing a stimulating range of topics.
I know you will find these and other changes we have made both exciting and refreshing, and we can’t wait for 19-20 August to arrive so we can share them all with you! Secondly, let me introduce you to Deborah De Jong. Deborah is an interior designer with years of experience including working on TV shows such as Changing Rooms, Renovation Rescue and a renovation rumble with The Block, and she is often invited to share her design expertise and skills as a motivational speaker at various events throughout the year. In 2017, Deborah will be teaming with me to bring you some more expo excitement on 17-18 March, when we will be presenting our first Home and Lifestyle Expo. Without giving away too much, let me simply say that we will be presenting the latest products and tips and tricks in making your own home decorations and renovations seamless, and how you can do it on a budget. I am very excited about this new venture, and promise to keep you posted! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have participated in the Sunshine Coast Women’s Lifestyle Expo over the past years, and look forward to welcoming both you and all of our new-comers to the 2016 expo, held over the weekend of 19-20 August at the Lake Kawana Community Centre. It promises to be our best expo yet!

This year we are introducing a mini food and music festival in the courtyard area. There will be a variety of food vendors, including coffee from Tim Adams, gourmet dumplings, vegan burgers, woodfired pizzas, divine gluten-free food from Monica Topliss and delights from Flaxton Gardens. There will even be the opportunity to sing karaoke with your friends and have local artists serenade you while you relax in the beautiful surroundings, an enchanted Gourmet Food Garden decorated with suspended teacup chandeliers. This mini festival will be a sensory delight.
Once again we will have a huge array of prizes on display in the main foyer. However, this year we are using the opportunity to support local volunteers and ask that those who wish to enter the draw donate $2, with all proceeds to go to Volunteering Sunshine Coast.
There will be ample parking at the Expo, along Sportsmans Parade and around the centre. Please note that on Saturday, 20 August, Sportsmans Parade will be closed from Main Drive to the Kawana Aquatic Centre for a major rowing event. Access to Lake Kawana Community Centre and Sportsmans Parade will be via Meridian Street. Our red team will be on hand to direct you and find parking without stress.

Luke Hines first appeared on our radar as one of ‘the boys from Bondi’ on My Kitchen Rules 2013 where he and mate Scott became known for their healthy dishes. Since skyrocketing to foodie fame Luke has become a role model for young men and women – with his buff bod and bronzed skin, the celebrity health foodie and trainer radiates confidence and vitality. But what you don’t know, is that image is a far cry from who he used to be as a teenager.
“W
hen I hit puberty, I well and truly knew it, because I was one of those kids who really suffered from acne,” Luke Hines says with raw honesty. “But I didn’t just get it on my face, I got it on my chest and back and it was a little bit traumatic, as I think it can be for many people, because at that age we’re going through such a transitional phase in our life. “It’s the time when we start to build confidence and friendship groups, we start introducing ourselves to sport and we also start looking at how we look in the mirror – a whole lot of things start happening for us.” As an angst-ridden teen, Luke says he wanted to do whatever he could to rid his skin of acne, but all he could manage was to cover up the problem, rather than treat it properly. “Majority of the things I tried weren't good for my body and I didn't have the education or the knowledge to know that at the time,” he says. It wasn’t until Luke, now aged 33, began using SkinB5 products this year, that he’s finally managed to truly tame his skin. “Had I known of SkinB5 when I was growing up, it would have made a massive difference because I wouldn't have been putting any harmful toxins into or onto my skin,” he says. “But acne wasn’t just something that was with me while growing up or during puberty; being someone who is really active and does a lot of travelling, the combination of sweating due to training a lot and being on a lot of flights and in a lot of taxis, you end up affecting your skin because it is dehydrated and irritated.” As a brand ambassador for SkinB5, Luke is encouraging people to have a conversation about acne – and that’s not limited to teenagers, it’s something adults need to talk about too. Luke: Cacao – I’m a massive chocolate lover! It’s versatile, you can use it in anything from a smoothie to a raw mousse, but you can bake a beautiful chocolate cake with it too.
Luke: Keep your goals quite simple, because they are more manageable that way. Make sure you track it and reward yourself – with a new outfit, new swimwear, a holiday or some healthy treats! 16
expo magazine
“Talking about skin and skin care can be a little bit of an awkward topic for the younger guys and it needs to be something that’s spoken about, it shouldn’t be a taboo topic,” he says. “What I want to do with SkinB5 is not only encourage younger blokes to look after themselves, whether they're going through puberty or up around my age and beyond, I want people to feel comfortable to do something about it. "It’s about educating people and giving them the right tools and knowledge so they can take their own health and happiness into their own hands, that’s what everybody needs, the confidence to get back out and do what they want to do in life, and love it.”
Given Luke’s food philosophy around clean living, exercise and eating nutrient-dense foods, avoiding gluten, dairy and refined sugar, it made sense for him to also approach his skincare regime naturally. “For me to look after my skin, it didn’t feel right to be taking something or putting something on my skin that had chemicals, fillers, toxic and harmful ingredients,” he says. “With the SkinB5 formulation, I knew it was natural and if I’m going to fuel my body the right way with food, I need to follow that up and do it with anything else I put into my body.”
luke's 'Chococado' Mousse • 3 large ripe avocados
Luke uses SkinB5’s Acne Control Tablets, which are extra potent to get acne under control from the inside out and help calm overactive skin oil production.
• 1 cup of pitted medjool dates (super soft, fresh ones) • ½ cup of raw cacao
“They’re doing the right thing from the inside, but what you put on your skin has a massive effect also,” he says, explaining he complements the tablets with the applying the cleansing mousse and moisturiser to his skin.
• 1 cup or small can of coconut cream or milk
Luke says since his time on My Kitchen Rules and now a published cookbook author, he does attract lucrative opportunities, but always makes sure he selects ambassador roles and brand alignments which ring true to who he is.
• Handful of fresh raspberries
Which is why the SkinB5 partnership works so well, "and it’s Australian-owned and that’s a massive difference, these days we need to start focusing on where things come from and doing the right thing by our country.”
• 2 tablespoons of raw honey • ½ cup of hazelnuts • 2 tablespoons of cacao nibs
METHOD: Start by blending the dates until they form a lovely puree. Add in the avocados and coconut cream and slowly introduce the cacao, honey, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Blend well until thick and smooth. Transfer to a small bowl. Crush the hazelnuts and sprinkle them over the mousse with the cacao nibs and fresh raspberries.

Tania Hubbard understands the crippling and debilitating pain, the side effects from having an allergy or severe intolerance to food. And fuelled by the desire to help people feel better, Tania embarked on an incredible journey to create the world’s first free-from products.
S
tanding in front of an awe-inspired conference crowd in London recently, Tania Hubbard tore off her armor and exposed herself in a way she’s never done before. This is the new Tania.
“People see you on the outside and think you’re ‘ubersuccessful’, but they have no idea,” she says honestly. “I could barely make ends meet 12 months ago, because my whole business was my life and we weren’t ready for a series of pretty crappy unfortunate events.” You see, in the space of a few months, Tania lost her sister-inlaw and best friend, nursed her husband back to health after almost losing him too, battled with her own illness, dealt with a global shortage of ingredients for her products, and her business being broken into twice. “I now know what it means when people say, ‘Work to your strengths’, all of that taught me I’m incredibly agile. I didn’t know how high I could bounce back,” she says. “I’m softer, I’m more open, less anxious and more able to embrace beautiful. Before, I was so focused in being in service and getting things right, I’m a complete OCD perfectionist when it comes to my product, that I lost sight of the bigger picture around me. “On a professional level, it completely rattled my self confidence and my belief and it wasn’t until I was invited to speak in London and am standing in front of all these people thinking, ‘You want to know what about my business?’ They were so excited and couldn’t believe how far we’ve developed it, our products are worldfirst, still to this day. That was the moment I knew I was back.” As a child, Tania was plagued with pain, but because coeliac disease was not as well documented as it is today, she was always met with misdiagnoses. “People would say, ‘They’re just growing pains’, and ‘The migraines will come and go’, and I had thinning hair and teeth that were really bad all the time, I was super skinny when I was younger and then I was 118kgs when I was my heaviest,” she says. “I wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my 30s and I’m 46 now. It was revolutionary because the stuff everyone said was normal, wasn’t normal.

“At one point they said I had Lupus, which is an autoimmune disease and I had a career in the public service in Canberra, which I loved, it was really crazy and busy, but this constant state of fatigue, migraines and depression, that was the worst.” Tania ended up with pleurisy and one of her lungs collapsed, but she pushed on, unaware of what was going on inside her body and the

significant toll it was having. It wasn’t until she was recommended to see a medical ecologist that her life changed. “I then went through all of the testing of coeliac disease, but still struggled with some foods, I didn’t know I had an allergy to corn, I didn’t know the significance of chest pain, dizziness and the shortness of breath was an allergic reaction, I didn’t understand that. Now I do,” she says.

“At the time I’m going, ‘What do I eat?’ There wasn’t any good gluten-free food, it was devoid of any nourishment, devoid of flavour. So I decided to make my own.” Tania bought a little bag of coconut flour and began experimenting. “Six months on I perfected my first free-from muffin – gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, dairy-free, yeast-free, sugar-free and it was amazing. My journey into business as a foodie started with a single muffin.”

Upon moving from Canberra to Caloundra in 2007, Tania developed five variations of her muffin and set up a stall at the Arthur Street markets. She sold out; 400 muffins in two hours. “I was amazed that people didn’t know that was the sort of food they needed. I had coeliacs coming out of the woodwork and people with nut allergies, and we were already understanding we could do something good for people,” says Tania. In 2009, Tania opened Husk and Honey cafe in Nambour, which lead to selling pre-made products, and publishing her first book. “It was never my dream to open a cafe, it was my dream and vision to understand what people wanted for food and to focus on that and build that and create that. I don’t see ‘free-from’ as a diet or a regime, I see it as a different way of eating. I’m eating a completely free-from meal and look at it,” she says, tucking into her breakfast, a plate laden with smoked salmon, avocado, labneh and a potato rosti. “This is free-from food and it’s no big deal.” For the past 12 months, following the previously-mentioned series of unfortunate events, Tania has published her second book and since launched her new range Whisk and Bowl, including a reformulated version of her famous chocolate chia seed cake, a delicious bread mix, and a brand new vegan biscuit. Tania will be at the Women’s Lifestyle Expo to answer any of your burning questions and of course, share one of her favourite recipes. “It’s a little date and cinnamon biscuit made with coconut flour which is gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, dairy-free, yeast-free, sugar-free and egg-free."

ack and Danie Hockley are used to adapting. Having met at the mines, both had several years fly-in fly-out experience under their belt, but when Danie fell pregnant with their now three-year-old son Cooper, they uprooted their lives in Western Australia, to be closer to family on the Sunshine Coast. Jack became based at Roma and continued two weeks on, two weeks off FIFO to support his growing family, which expanded to include their now two-year-old son Alex, which suited the family well. Moulding her new life around being a stay-at-home mum, Danie opened a successful family day care business from their Mountain Creek home. With two young children of her own and taking on the care of others, routine became king. “You think it’s hard when you’re doing it and then you look back and think what was I doing?,” she says with a laugh.
The FIFO life is something so many Sunshine Coast families have become accustomed to, and was the norm for stay-at-home mum Danie Hockley and her husband, Jack. But when their baby girl was born with a virus that threatened her life, that quickly changed.
“You have a set routine and you have to stick to it otherwise you can’t do anything. I had to be out of the house by 7.30am with one extra child, to get to daycare to drop Cooper off and to be back by 8.30am for the other two kids to arrive. “You had strict routine, but as soon as the FIFO husband comes home, the routine would be out of the window, but you have to stick to it, or try to!” While Danie was pregnant with their third child, a beautiful daughter, Jack had made plans to return to FIFO after her birth, while Danie intended to re-open her family day care within three months. “Everything was going really well with the pregnancy,” she says.

“I thought I was more ‘fluidy’ in the pregnancy and she was little, I could never feel her, but just thought she was small. At 36 weeks I had a normal scan and was measuring at 34 weeks, so they got me to have an ultrasound and that’s when they found calcifications on the brain and an enlarged ventricle.” Unbeknownst to Danie and Jack, both were telltale signs of congenital cytomegalovirus, also known as CMV. CMV is a common virus that can infect people of all ages. Once CMV is in a person’s body, it stays there for life. Most healthy adults and children will have no signs or symptoms and no long-term effects. It can, however, be very dangerous to unborn babies. “None of our GPs, paediatricians and doctors have ever dealt with it, so it was all new to everyone, they’d had a little bit of training on it, but that's it,” says Danie. Since Keira was born, she has undergone multiple x-rays, blood tests, scans and appointments with paediatricians, physiotherapists, ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialists and audiologist, as well as being on medication to stop the calcifications growing and preserve the remaining hearing. Keira also failed both hearing tests in the hospital, which Danie says is another indication of CMV. “We’ve found out she’s profoundly deaf in the left ear and severe-to-moderately deaf in the right ear, so we’re having hearing aids fitted and around six to nine months we’ll look at getting a cochlear (implant), which should give her 90 per cent of her hearing back,” she says. While the reality of the situation is still raw, the Hockley family is counting their blessings. “We're just lucky she doesn't have the symptoms of a lot of other children,” says Danie. “Some children will have very mild hearing loss and minor delays, other children will be completely wheelchair bound and some are stillborn and don’t survive the pregnancy, so it’s such a wide variation. “We just have to wait for milestones to see whether she reaches them, to find out whether she’s got any other delays. It’s just a waiting game.” Vowing to remain positive and continue to plan a bright future for all three of their children, right now, Danie and Jack are focusing on early intervention. “We’ve just been approved to be part of the Better Start program, which is government funding to support early intervention therapies and equipment to assist with development prior to starting school,” she says. Cradling now seven-week-old Keira in her arms, Danie looks down and says, “She just looks like a perfect little baby, you wouldn’t even know”.

Roz White is an experienced owner/operator of White’s IGA Supermarkets and an active member in the community, championing countless local, state and national charity events. And having held esteemed board positions across Australia, Roz is an advocate for women in leadership.
R
oz grew up on a cattle property, northwest of Bundaberg, where she was the youngest of eight children and revelled in their fairly simple life, loaded with freedom and independance.
After undergoing her primary school education in a one-teacher school and then completing her senior years via the local high school and by distance education, Roz landed the best job in town – at the local bank. Upon turning 21, she yearned for richer life experience and put in for a transfer to the Westpac branch in Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore. “I came down here and lived independently, got my own little flat and just had a ball,” she says with a beaming smile, “I was on a new path in life and I completely embraced it and enjoyed every millisecond of it.” As fate would have it, a transfer to the Tewantin branch a few years later as a teller, saw her meet her now-husband, Michael, who was transferred as an office manager to the same branch, on the same day. After being together 18 months, the pair bought the Nightowl convenience store on Aerodrome Road, Maroochydore. “That was the beginning of our retailing journey,” says Roz, explaining she also kept her job at the bank, but worked at the store with Michael on weekends. They went on to buy the 24-hour Nightowl in Mooloolaba and gradually grew the suite of businesses. By this time, Roz was also managing the Westpac branch in Hastings Street, Noosa, but upon purchasing their third store, it reached a point she needed to immerse herself in the industry and in their business. “I was reluctant to leave what I was doing because I loved it so much and helping the business by being an ancillary on the side wasn’t appealing, I really didn’t enjoy the business, I wasn’t passionate about the industry and to me the day-to-day duties were a chore and it was hard work to me.”

“I felt like I was making a big sacrifice at the time, but I knew I had to do it because we were building our business and I needed to be involved.” Roz reluctantly resigned from her job and became fully engaged in the business. But while Michael was driven and passionate, there was no fire in Roz’s belly, she didn’t understand it, she couldn’t relate to it, and for the sake of their business, that had to change. “I began understanding the industry and meeting a lot of people in the industry, I just got involved,” she says. “I woke up one day and I was bitten by the retail bug, I don’t know what happened, suddenly I just got it and I was hooked. It was a very defining moment for me. “I learnt the industry and I worked from the ground up and involved myself at every level and once I understood it, it all came together and ignited a burning passion. “Sometimes you’ve just got to take yourself on a journey, you don’t quite understand where the journey will take you, but it takes you to amazing places you could never foresee. Now I look back, what I thought was a sacrifice, was the best decision I could have ever made in my whole life.” Together, Roz and Michael have built on their business over the past 23 years, admittedly learning from mistakes along the way, and overcoming challenges. Now, they have around 200 staff and will be employing another 70 in the next few months with the opening of their fourth store at Peregian Beach. The other notch in their belt is the completion of the redevelopment of the River Markets Shopping Centre at Bli Bli, and a planned $25 million new commercial precinct neighbouring the Sunshine Castle. With business growth comes profit, which enables White’s IGA to generously give back to their local community. “Part of the IGA ethos and philosophy is being involved in the community,” says Roz. “Back when we were growing our business, we identified that IGA was the most progressive of the independant supermarket sector and we also recognised their community program – Community Chest, which sets aside a pool of money within the store to put back into the community.” But Roz didn’t stop there, she engrossed herself in the community around her, supporting schools, community groups, local and national events and charities, created the blueprint for the Leukaemia Foundation Car Rally modelled off the successful venture in far north Queensland, and joined forces with MontroseAccess which provides vital care to children with physical disabilities and their families. “You meet the families and then you understand their challenges and that is the most grounding experience,” she

says. “I have so many blessings in life and there are these families facing these enormous challenges every single day and once you have the opportunity and privilege to see how they deal with this, it’s so inspiring. It gives me more than what I give to it.” But it doesn’t stop there, the current Outstanding Businesswoman of the Year also holds a number of esteemed positions and is an advocate for women in leadership. Roz was the first female chair of the IGA board of Australia, she is the head of the Retail Guild for Queensland, board member of the National Guild of Australia, and has sat on the National Council of IGA in conjunction with the corporate company Metcash. “Our industry is filled with talented people, there are a lot of women in management positions, but there is a massive void between that level, and women who take up strong leadership positions within the industry and I am quite alone a lot of the time in my roles, and that’s right across the country,” she says. “I find that crazy! We are evolving and emerging and gravitating towards having more gender equality in those senior positions, and I know we’ve come a long way since the 1950s, but it’s quite amazing there’s still that big disparity there." While Roz exudes a cool, calm confidence as she lobbies for gender equality, she lets me in on a little secret. “I have been intimidated to the core, you don’t show it externally, but I have been quite intimidated walking into a room full of 50 males and I’m the only female,” she says. “But you are there representing your industry, you’ve got a job to do and you know you can add value. “Face your challenge, don’t be intimidated by the process, if you are, punch through that and give it all you’ve got and they will respect you on the other side, because that’s how you build your credibility.” Amen to that sister!
