WELCOME

C

an you believe it’s that time of year again?! I don’t know about you but 2017 seemed to whizz by so quickly and I’m pleased to say it has been another hugely successful year here at Profile headquarters. The team and I have loved sharing the stories of the incredible people of the Sunshine Coast with you each month, as well as the many events we have had the pleasure of hosting and attending throughout the year. We are delighted to bring you our very last issue for 2017. Jam packed with inspirational stories to enjoy over the holiday period, we hope it inspires you towards a healthy, wealthy and wise year in 2018. Speaking of new starts, on our cover this month, we introduce you to experienced separation specialist Alvia Turney from Act 4 Tomorrow and her team of legal eagles who are helping couples find happiness again by avoiding the unnecessary pitfalls and heartache of separation and divorce. Nicole Fuge chats with an inspirational local family who turned what could have been a tragic incident into a blessing, by shifting their focus to help others who are less fortunate in Africa. We also meet Daisy Cox, a brave young woman on the autism spectrum who has started an organisation to remove the stigma surrounding the condition and is helping others on the spectrum connect; and we get up close and personal with upcoming star Jason Daniels who is doing the Sunny Coast proud in the music scene – watch this space, you saw him here first! All this plus lots more, including the latest in food, fashion, culture and what’s on in this special holiday edition of Profile. From myself and the entire Profile team, we would like to thank our loyal readers and advertisers for their continued support this year. We wish you and your family a very safe and merry Christmas and look forward to another great year ahead in 2018! Until then, happy holidays!

The first thing I loved about the latest edition of Profile Magazine was the cover. The high tea, the pretty dress and elegant teacup in hand reminded me of my middle, and now-adult daughter, who loves high tea parties and I just had to have that magazine adorning my coffee table. This edition has the lot, with the thoughtprovoking articles on food production and sustainability and that amazing machine that dries food for nutrition rich supplements, wow, these all made perfect sense to me. Loved every minute of it with my tea and biscuits. - Jeannie Musgrave

big love

WORDS NICOLE FUGE

Generosity. It’s a word that is often associated with giving something to someone else, but have you ever thought about being generous with yourself ?

T

his time of year always stirs up emotions as I reflect on the year that has been – milestones achieved and things that didn’t quite go to plan, and wonder what the future has in store. It’s also a time to consider others, your family, your friends, and your community, especially those who may not be as fortunate and think about how you can help (cue Jackie DeShannon’s Put A Little Love in Your Heart). But it’s true, the festive season brings out the most generous among us, whether that be in showering our loved ones in gifts, or by donating goods or services to local charities. And there are an abundance of causes at this time of year including the Salvation Army’s Adopt a Family appeal, the Ulysses Club annual Toy Run, and free Christmas Day lunches for the disadvantaged and homeless. Christmas Eve also marks the creation of The Smith Family in 1922, when five businessmen donated armfuls of toys and sweets to a Sydney orphanage, inspired to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in Australia. Preferring to remain anonymous, when asked who the children could thank, one

of the men said, “Smith”. “What about the others?” the matron asked. “They’re Smiths too”, he replied, “We’re all Smiths. We’re The Smith Family.” For more than 90 years, The Smith Family has been supporting disadvantaged children in Australia, and since 2003 has given $17.4 million to lower income families through the Saver Plus program, which sees families save up to $500 of their own money (which is matched dollar for dollar), to buy educational supplies for their children.

To FALL IN LOVE with yourself is the first secret to HAPPINESS.” – Robert Morley

Saver Plus Coordinator Denise Clark says, “Every child deserves a chance to get the best from their education, go on camp, play a sport, participate in programs and provide their laptop for school. With Saver Plus we’re giving power back to individuals and families so they can access all opportunities”. An extension of this is their MoneyMinded program, developed by the Department of Education and Training and ANZ bank. The program aims to improve financial literacy skills by teaching practical budgeting skills, making money goals, reducing debt, as well as saving for the future and superannuation.

A year from now you may WISH you had started today.” – Karen Lamb

“Our aim is to provide our participants with easy to adapt skills to improve their overall situation,” says Denise, explaining they also provide information on where to buy low cost food, how to apply for no interest loans and helpful ways to chip away at big bills. Share the Dignity is also spreading the love this season, through its In the Bag initiative, whereby people donate a handbag they no longer use and fill it with essential and luxury items that will make any woman feel loved. These goodie bags are then given to women who are struggling at Christmas. The thought behind it is that as a society, women seem to manage the needs of children at this time of year, ensuring they’re always cared for and made to feel special; putting the needs of others before their own desires. It’s a sentiment that also rings true in everyday life, which has me pose a question to all of the ladies out there – if you have two apples and one is without any imperfections and the other is bruised, which one would you give to your hungry child and which one would you eat yourself ? While it’s so important to look out for others and lend a helping hand whenever you can, it’s also imperative that we, as women, look after ourselves and when we do something just for us, it’s not selfish – you do deserve it. Make 2018 your year. profilemag.com.au

driven for GREATNESS WORDS CAITLYN SPANNER PHOTOS CULLEN COLLECTION

It’s been a bumpy road at times for Sunshine Coast Young Business Woman of the Year, Angie Mansey, but this kind-hearted, car-loving superwoman has a knack for turning a difficult situation into a positive change for herself, her family and the local car community.

A

ngie Mansey has taken on more roles in her young life than most of us will ever achieve in a lifetime. With an intrinsic desire to care for people, she got into nursing and specialised in dentistry bone grafting and implants. All the while with her diesel mechanic partner Luke and son Rhylie by her side. It wasn’t until her second son, Corbin, came along in 2011 that Angie had to start looking at life differently. Corbin was taken away for surgery the minute he was born. They discovered that he was the only known person to suffer from a combination of two life threatening conditions, VACTERL association disorder and biliary atresia. “He’s had 23 surguries to date, he’s been resuscitated from flat lining six times,

in the first year of life he was only home for 10 days, the rest of it was in intensive care. We’ve had a few blood transfusions, lumbar punctures, we’ve said our goodbyes three times, we’ve been airlifted in helicopters and planes, and had way too many ambulance trips,” she says. “For his first birthday he was actually in surgery but we were transferred down to Melbourne where he was put on the liver transplant list. He’s off the transplant list now, but there is no prognosis.” Corbin also suffers from a range of other illnesses that have been brought on by the multiple operations and long periods of life support. He’s fed through a tube in his stomach, has the rarest blood type and has a weak immune system due to overexposure to hospitals and antibiotics. But Angie stresses that this isn’t a sob story – she is a positive, strong and determined woman who has not let Corbin’s prognosis limit the way she and her family live. “On the plus side he is generally a happy little boy who doesn’t live in pain and has no disabilities as such to speak of. Even as a mother of a child who is medically

compromised, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him, but of course, it’s pretty petrifying what is,” she says. Angie and Luke have since welcomed two more beautiful, blonde baby boys into their family, three-year-old Dash and twoyear-old Ace. Today Angie is not only a mother of four, but a carer, business woman, wife, philanthropist and active member of the community. While she has always been a hard-working person, she never thought she’d end up in the situation she’s in now. Two years ago, when Ace was just six weeks old, Corbin’s liver failed, and Angie and Luke had to make some drastic decisions. “Because I worked the whole time to pay for the medical bills and expenses, we needed to make a change. So we quit our jobs, invested in Kuluin Mufflers and opened the doors,” she says. The business didn’t come about under the greatest of circumstances, but in true Angie style, she made the best of the situation. Not only has Kuluin Mufflers seen tremendous success in just 18 months, profilemag.com.au

with their own line of mufflers and custom made KM exhaust systems available Australia wide, they also own a retro style coffee van with their own range of cold pressed coffees, merchandise that sold out within 24 hours of launching, and they sponsor all of the major car clubs in southeast Queensland. “For the first eight months, I brought all three of my children in every single day until we could work up enough to afford day care. I juggled them with big professional meetings with motor companies and no one batted an eye,” she says. Charity has also been something incredibly important to Angie, donating her time, money and effort when she can. “We’ve just been very lucky that we’ve had a lot of people in the community help us throughout our journey with Corbin. We’ve really always wanted to give back to the community and I think that everybody has a role to play,” she says. Angie discovered early on that she had the confidence to speak about her situation, and has used her story as an the holiday issue 2017

example to motivate others. Wishlist, Give Me Five for Kids and more recently, causes tackling male suicide and depression such as Cars For Hope, are her chosen charities. “Within the first three months of starting, we noticed there were a lot of young car clubs on the Coast,” she says. What they discovered was a tight knit community coming together over a shared passion. At one of their car meets, Angie had a young man say to her that he lost six friends to suicide since he left school. One of those six young men was a friend

of Angie’s who took his life a few months after Kuluin Mufflers opened. “You couldn’t have seen it coming. That was horrific to us because he was right there in front of us. Maybe, just maybe, if he was part of something…” Angie trails off. “Then we realised we had this audience of young kids. I don’t think that we are doing anything drastic but I just can’t sit there. I think something needs to change. I don’t know what it is, I would just like them to know that if there’s ever an issue they can turn up.” Angie and Luke offer a safe space to men of all ages to come in and be a part of something bigger. “There are always amazing cars on the hoist, it’s a great distraction, you don’t need to talk, we know you’re here, and we won’t ask you any questions. Just know it’s a safe place,” she says. All of Angie’s work in the community has not gone unnoticed. This year she won Sunshine Coast Young Business Woman of the Year. “The award was a massive surprise. We had an incredible night, received a standing ovation, then got a mention in Parliament.” Now with a nomination for Business Person of the Year and Business of the Year, Angie is excited for what’s next. “This is a passion. I’m a mum of four and my family and children will come first, I live and breathe for them. But to be able to have something that I can be really passionate about makes me feel a little bit more than someone who’s been put into a sort of stereotypical role. It’s a nice way to continue with life as normal.” If you’re experiencing a personal crisis and need to speak to someone, call Lifeline 131 114 or MensLine Australia 1300 78 99 78. profilemagazine

COMBINING THE CULINARY SKILLS OF RENOWNED CHEF NATHAN RUMBLE AND THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE OF JASON HESS, BACKLANE TAPAS WAS BOUND TO DELIVER GREAT RESULTS. ADD IN A BREEZY BACK ALLEY LOCATION AND A CAREFULLY CURATED WINE LIST AND YOU’VE GOT THE RECIPE FOR BAR AND RESTAURANT SUCCESS.

T

he pair have decades of experience between them, working at some of the Sunshine Coast’s most sought after venues. So when they joined forces to run Backlane Tapas and Wine bar, Nathan Rumble and Jason Hess were excited to create a destination that would appeal to the masses but provide something totally new for locals and holidaymakers alike. “We wanted to carve out our own niche, and it will obviously take time but I think we’ve gotten off on the right foot,” says Nathan, who was thrilled to see tables booked out in their second weekend of business. The illustrious chef has worked in venues from the well-known Testsuyas in Sydney to Tamarind in Maleny and has been sought after by many well established restaurants on the Coast. Nathan has also been a TAFE teacher and has dabbled in consulting and catering throughout his career. He’s excited to share his thoughtfully designed menu with those looking to move away from the everyday dishes that most of us are accustomed to on the Sunshine Coast. “If I had to pigeon hole the food I’d probably say it’s that European/Spanish style of eating, with the small share plate concept. Cheese, cream and heavy oils at the end of a dinner can prove to be pretty heavy, so I’ve tried to lighten it up with some Asian greens, soy sauce, fish sauce, tonnes of fresh herbs and fermented chilies,” he says. The result is a fusion of cuisines but with a Spanish tapas style concept. The European influences don’t stop at the menu. Jason says the back lane

TRAVIS SCHULTZ ON BACKLANE’S WINE LIST “The wine list has been crafted to accommodate a wide range of palates and to suit those who are dining from a Mediterranean tapas style menu, or even if they are just calling in for a casual aperitif or three. There’s a great little Rioja from Spain, a beautiful Italian prosecco, and a terrific Estandon rosé from Provence, so it’s great to have those Mediterranean style options on the list that will beautifully match the food and give people an opportunity to experience a little bit of cultural adventure at a back lane in Mooloolaba.”

location is akin to the streets of Italy, where you find locals enjoying quality food and drink. And having worked in places like Rick’s Whiskey Bar, Peak Wine Bar and The Piano Bar, he has developed cocktail and whiskey knowledge over the years. “We have something for everyone,” says Jason. And while the sentiment gets thrown around a lot these days, the mix of wines, gins, whiskeys, beers and the impressive list of cocktails featuring fresh ingredients from the kitchen, means that everyone’s needs can be catered for. “Having a wine list written by Travis Schultz is a standout, he’s a great wine buff and he’s got a great sense of wine knowledge,” he adds.

The great mix of industry experts at Backlane didn’t happen by accident. Nathan, Jason and Travis were brought together by Walter Iezzi and Leisa Toomey, who’ve been aware of their skills for years. “We’ve both served Walter and Leisa over the years and had many conversations with Walter. It’s just good to see that he’s finally done it and now we’ve all come together and we’ve made a venue that the Coast is crying out for,” says Jason. Walter and Leisa had a lot of influence over the look and feel of the venue and have brought together an experienced team who are excited to bring a relaxed, modern and sophisticated venue to the back lane of Mooloolaba.

LIFE

WORDS NICOLE FUGE PHOTOS CHRISTINA STUBBS AND CONTRIBUTED

In 2004, the Barton family lost everything when a fire destroyed their home. But from the ashes of despair rose an opportunity to make a difference in the world, and they left behind a comfortable life in exchange for a richer experience.

“T

he house fire was probably the best thing that happened to us because we were on a path about ourselves. Life was comfortable, we had four kids in private school and had good jobs, it was a great life; but it was all about us and I think the house fire changed everything,” Jenny Barton says honestly. “The most important things in life aren’t things, they’re people, and being able to hold your kids that little bit closer knowing how close you came to actually losing one of them, it changed our perspective.” Recounting that fateful night, when Jenny was at home with three of their four children, she says it all happened in a flash. The kids, aged four, five and nine, were in bed, and Jenny was at the other end of their two-storey Logan home when she could hear and smell that their fireplace in the lounge room was ablaze. “They tell you how quickly fire spreads, but you have no idea,” says Jenny, “You go into adrenaline mode, it feels like minutes but it’s milliseconds.” With her two youngest safely outside, Jenny ran back into the house. “I was halfway up the second lot of stairs and I couldn’t go any further, I thought I was going to pass out knowing my daughter is up there and I can’t get to her,” she says. In a miracle moment, Jenny caught a THE BARTON FAMILY IN UGANDA

glimpse of her eldest daughter downstairs, who has no memory of the night, and swiftly pulled her to safety. “I was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, and a couple of hours later the neighbours were going to bed and saw our whole second storey was ablaze,” says Jenny. “The fire brigade came back and unfortunately in those older style homes with raked ceilings, it can rekindle in the roofline. We would have only lost the lounge and kitchen area and had smoke damage, so most of the damage was done by the second fire.” What could have been devastating was instead considered a blessing. The six-month rebuild of their home marked a new beginning for the family, a fresh start, and they wanted to do something significant with their lives – thus forging the beginning of their African adventure. “We looked at a few different countries including Haiti, Kenya and Uganda which needed a lot of assistance. Uganda was open to Visas longer than three months and had one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world, the highest orphan rate

PEOPLE and had a civil war in the middle of it, we thought, ‘Let’s go to Uganda!,” Russ says. They intended on a one-year hiatus, to instill positive change in the Ugandan community and make a difference in their own children’s lives. They wound up staying for over a decade. “We fell in love with the place, the people and the culture, it’s so different and so diverse from where we’ve come from, and we felt like we could do something. It’s been an incredible adventure and we wouldn’t change it,” says Jenny. Their eldest son, Harley, was 13 at the time and stayed in Uganda for three years, returning to Australia to finish his schooling. Rebecca, their eldest daughter, graduated in Uganda and has gone on to become a third-year paramedic student at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Two years ago, Russ and Jenny returned to the Sunshine Coast so their two youngest children, Grace and Matthew could see out their high school years. “The kids have loved it, they’re all different human beings because of what they got to experience, they didn’t miss out, it’s a different type of environment.” Telling me about their home in East Africa, which had a layered security system right down to panic buttons by their bed, it sounds like a complete contrast to their bright and beautiful abode in Marcoola. “We live in a compound with 10ft high concrete walls, a 24-hour security guard with a pump action shotgun, and grills and bars on every window so you’re locked in;

“ 14

we often think about how we would get out if there was a fire,” says Jenny. “You don’t go outside of your compound unless you’re going to school or work, you don’t go walking outside the compound, there isn’t anywhere to go and have fish and chips on the beach or at the park, it’s a very different lifestyle in that sense. “We never had any safety issues because we took security very seriously and that was one of the non-negotiables with having kids, we wanted it to be a positive experience for them.” In 12 years, the Barton family has made insurmountable change through their non-profit organisation Operation Uganda. In the first 12 months, they opened a children’s home for 76 orphans in Kampala, which had been overcome with urban poverty, and another home for 35 displaced refugee children in war torn northern Uganda. They then changed their approach from residential care to family-based care. “We tracked down family members for over 100 children in the two homes and placed those kids back into family care.” They have since created a strong national team, catering to almost 1000 orphans and vulnerable children through their scholarship program.

“The reality is so many people live on that bottom line of poverty, where one extra mouth in their house to feed is one too many, they can’t even afford their own kids’ school fees let alone extended family. “So we have seen the benefits of child sponsorship. We have one young boy, Steven, who was one of the children in our residential home, an orphan boy; we ended up placing him back with his grandmother and he finished secondary school in the top percentile, received a bursary from the government and now he’s in his third year of medicine, studying to be a doctor. “From someone you write off and think there’s no hope, no future and now you have kids who are changing the face of Uganda,” says Russ. With the help of Australian volunteers, they also opened a daycare centre and affiliated training centre to stop vulnerable mums needing to take their young children to work with them in the slum. “It’s about providing a safe environment for kids to have a healthy start to life and for the mums to be trained with skills to increase their quality of life as well,” says Jenny, explaining the children have now been starting school with basic reading and writing skills, which is very advanced for the Ugandan education system. “A lot of the mums haven’t had access to education so they don’t even speak English, through the six-month training course we

That’s been very successful and we’ve seen women become financially independant.” Now that Russ and Jenny’s children have all finished school, they will spend half of the coming year here on the Sunshine Coast, and the other half in Uganda where they are finishing the construction of seven classrooms and three daycare centres. “There were 560 kids who haven’t had access to education before because they have had 20 years of civil war in that district, so there was no infrastructure and no capacity,” says Russ. “You have poverty in the inner urban city, but it is completely different to rural poverty and having lived there for 12 years, we’ve seen a lot and you travel to some places and wonder how they even exist, the poverty is so extreme,” Jenny adds. “We are a family who is trying to make a difference and it continues to grow with the support of others, but it’s the tip of the iceberg, there is still so much more to do.” In February, Russ and Jenny join 12 other Aussies climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, raising $100,000 to build a secondary school for 1000 students; there are currently 19,200 youths who don’t have access to education. Since committing to the challenge, Jenny has lost 26kgs in two years, to ensure she will be healthy enough to climb the highest freestanding mountain in the world. It seems nothing can stop this inspiring family. Operation Uganda is conducting its annual Christmas hamper drive. Last year 700 hampers were donated, feeding 3500 Ugandan people. The hampers come in a basin they can bathe in, and contain enough groceries for two weeks, including rice, sugar, beans and healthcare items, as well as gifts for the kids. You can purchase your $30 hamper throughout December, and they will do a second run in January. Visit operationuganda.org and gofundme.com/climb-for-kidscharity-climb

The Showcase Jewellers’ store is Australia’s first and only authorised jewellers manufacturer of the Rio Tinto Diamond Chain of Custody program, which allows them to custom design pieces using fully tracked Argyle white diamonds from Western Australia, set in Australian gold.

This gives Maleny Jewellers a genuine point of difference and a reputation upon which owners Sandra and Jim Goulton have prided themselves on for 17 years. Through three exclusive collections, Passion8, Argyle and Dreamtime, Sandra says it has seen them return to more of a fine jewellery focus, and truly showcase Jim’s skills as a jeweller and setter. “Customers love that journey of creating a beautiful piece for their wedding day, anniversary or special birthday, and that process is fantastic with Jim; he loves creating, it’s his forte,” says Sandra. “Because I was a setter before I became a jeweller, I understand the way stones are set and work with that to show off the stone in the best way,” adds Jim. Passion8 diamonds are superlative and their brilliant-cut diamonds exhibit the extremely rare symmetrical pattern of eight perfect hearts and eight perfect arrows, which means they are the brightest diamond money can buy. “Even when it’s dirty it still sparkles three times more than other diamonds. This is due to the cut of the diamond, which allows 100 per cent of the light to come out the top; it’s mathematically perfect,” says store manager, Janis Martin. “Less than one per cent of the world’s diamonds can be Passion8, they’re like the Rolls Royce of the diamond world and

they’re exclusive to us.” Then there are the Argyle diamonds, which possess the allure of rarity given the Argyle mine will only operate until 2021. “It will be a rarity to be able to say you have an Argyle diamond. People buy them as a family heirloom, so it’s very special,” says Janis. “Argyle diamonds also come in earrings and pendants, it doesn’t have to just be engagement rings – so you too can have an Argyle diamond.” Meanwhile the Dreamtime range celebrates the coloured stones of the Argyle range through a collection of dress rings, pendants and earrings. All pieces in the three collections come with a certificate of authenticity. Having turned the small Hinterland business into a highly desired destination over the past 17 years, Maleny Jewellers truly is a cut above.

Sunshine Coast local Daisy Cox is changing the way we look at autism by encouraging young women to celebrate their differences and connect with others on the spectrum, she shares her vision with Profile.

iagnosed with the neurological disorder when she was seven, Daisy Cox says she spent the next nine years of her childhood lonely and confused about her differences. It wasn’t until she was almost 16 that she met someone else on the spectrum and discovered she wasn’t alone. “I was quite an introverted child and I had some other behaviour issues,” says Daisy. “I was always quite lonely during my childhood. I had friends but they weren’t like me, I just didn’t know why I was different. “Looking back now I have always had all the hallmarks. I liked repetition, things had to be done a certain way and in a certain order, I found eye contact really challenging, and change was really difficult for me to deal with.” At 26 years of age, Daisy still faces some of those challenges in her day-to-day life. “Although I am a fully-functional adult

“ who works full time, I still come home and have those things to deal with, change is still very difficult for me,” says Daisy. “It goes back to that old saying, don’t judge a book by its cover. A disability isn’t always one you can see. “I flew to Melbourne recently and used specialised access so I could board faster, because I have anxiety, and the number of looks I got because I don’t have a wheelchair or disability was amazing. “I find myself constantly explaining that I have a sensory and communication disorder.” But that’s not to say these differences stop Daisy from leading a happy and fulfilled life. That’s the message she wants to share with other young women who are diagnosed with autism and the reason she launched A Little Sparkle in July last year. “I was hearing about so many kids with autism not doing well at school and being put into a box and labelled because of their diagnosis and I thought: that’s not what it’s about. It’s about rejoicing in our differences. I have a seven-year-old brother who has autism, so I have seen it first hand. “For many living on the autism spectrum, there aren’t always opportunities to get together with like-minded people. So we ran the first event to see what the general consensus was and it was so well

All the mentors and team leaders are on the spectrum too, so it creates a SAFE PLACE where no one feels like they are going to be ostracised because we UNDERSTAND first hand what they are going through.”

received we decided to have one each month, and that’s really how it all started. “The name came from the idea that all our girls add individual sparkle to what could be a boring and dull life without them.” Each month, the girls enjoy a different social event or craft day, where they meet others on the spectrum in a safe and nurturing environment and make connections with others going through the same experiences. “They range from outings to the Ginger Factory and all kinds of craft workshops and we are also about to launch self-esteem workshops,” says Daisy. “We’ll cover things like deportment and self care and all the things young girls need to know, which are especially difficult for someone on the spectrum.” And the response from their parents has been overwhelming. profilemag.com.au

AUTISM - THE FACTS

DAISY COX

“I’ve had lots of mums say their daughter started the group very quiet and shy and now they are a chatterbox and developing new friendships,” says Daisy. “A lot of our girls are homeschooled so it can be especially lonely and these connections are so important for them. I recently heard about two of our older girls going to the cinema together, which is exactly the kind of connections we are trying to make.” What’s even more unique is that everyone in the organisation, from the director to the treasurer, is on the autism spectrum, which Daisy says makes the young girls feel totally at ease. “All the mentors and team leaders are on the spectrum too, so it creates a safe place where no one feels like they are going to be ostracised because we understand first hand what they are going through.” Early intervention is the key to the best possible outcomes for children on the autism spectrum and Daisy says in the 20 years since she was diagnosed we have come a long way. “We just didn’t have the tools we have now back then. I have seen some wonderful results among the girls in our group who had access to the therapy they needed at a very early age.” And with people like Daisy paving the way for these young people, their future is looking sparkly. the holiday issue 2017

started the business because I had no one to step me through what was happening to me at the time,” says Alvia. “I found it so confusing and overwhelming and emotionally distressful, which affected my ability to function on a daily basis. And because it dragged on for two years, by the time we both came out the other end, we had spent enough money which would have put our boys through university and we could no longer speak to each other. “It created a big divide in the family that remained for 10 years. In that time, we have had two weddings, which should have been happy occasions, instead there was terrible animosity in the room. I didn’t want anyone else to go through that, and then to find out that it was completely unnecessary was so frustrating. “That’s when I thought, right, that’s it, I’m going to do something about it and Act 4 Tomorrow Separation Specialists was born four years ago.” It’s a story that many people can relate to, but Alvia says it doesn’t have to be that way. Providing support to help couples navigate through the angst and confusion of separation and divorce, Alvia and her team aim to achieve a positive outcome for all parties, avoiding the court system where possible, often saving couples tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention years of unnecessary animosity, especially when children are involved. “Aside from the emotional support, my aim is to prepare clients with what they need from a practical point of view, so that when they do eventually sit down with a lawyer, they are emotionally ready to listen,” says Alvia. “A lot of people already have an idea of how they would like to distribute things and our system works so well that generally within two months everything can be wrapped up nicely and they have an outcome they are both happy with.

“The longer the process takes, the more likely it is that people start hearing from outside influences like family and friends, they start to get frustrated and angry and that is when it can start to go pear-shaped. The aim is to remind them what the big picture is and help them come to terms with what has happened. The quicker people can move on the sooner they can find happiness again.” While a marriage breakup is never easy, Alvia says through respectful conflict resolution in a calm and non-judgemental environment, the majority of couples can reach an amicable agreement without unnecessary legal costs. But she is quick to add, there is more to a happy settlement than just mediation. Alvia says, “We project manage the whole separation from breakup, sometimes even assist with planning when a separation should take place and how to deliver the message, so it has the least impact on everyone involved.

LIVE your life with someone you LOVE and who loves you, anything less is just selling yourself SHORT.”

“We walk you through what you need to do, for example organising the to-do list, we assist you in gathering the information on assets and liabilities, it’s all too big a job for one person. Knowing that someone is there with you in your time of grief and overwhelm, greatly reduces the fear. We hear from many clients that they remained in unhappy relationships because they felt the problems associated with leaving were too difficult.” Working with three family lawyers who are equally as passionate about helping couples to settle out of court and avoid unnecessary financial costs and mental strain, Alvia has created a dream team who are making the whole process so much easier. “I’ve found the best three lawyers,” says Alvia. “They are like-minded, they share the same philosophy, they really respect the clients and they want the best outcome as quickly as possible.” Looking back over the past four years since Act 4 Tomorrow Separation Specialists opened its doors, Alvia laments on just how much both she and the business have grown and she credits that growth to the support of the wonderful profilemag.com.au

team of lawyers and the Act 4 Tomorrow team behind her. “I still wake up every day with absolute passion for what I do and I would not be where I am today if it was not for the people who have worked tirelessly alongside me,” says Alvia. “It was a startup business, so my team have had to work out of hours, given their time so freely, come in on weekends, it has been phenomenal. I am so very proud of everyone.” Having helped hundreds of people from all walks of life find happiness again, she says the secret to their success is a nonjudgemental approach, where each party is treated fairly and with respect. “I think my ethos comes from my father,” says Alvia. “His philosophy was always; do onto others as you would want them to do onto you. “I really believe everyone is right, in their opinion it is so, it is their story and that’s what they believe. The story is however irrelevant really, it’s the outcome that’s important and that is how we can remain impartial, we don’t judge, we just move them from story, to a happy ending and new beginning.” And although Alvia may be in the business of helping couples to separate, she is quick to point out she is not an advocate for divorce. In fact, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing people move from unhappy to happy again, often with a new partner and a second chance at love. “It’s just lovely to see people with a new start. I think the ones who have impacted me the most are the older generation – those in their late 60s and 70s who have had a new start, perhaps they’ve gone back to university or jumped out of a plane. One older lady said she would never marry again and yet within the year she met the love of her life. “Live your life with someone you love and who loves you, anything less is just selling yourself short.” the holiday issue 2017

They may have been representing opposite parties but there was an instant connection between family lawyer and mother-of-two Tracy Price and Alvia during a phone conversation three years ago that was to be the beginning of a great partnership. “I remember I was working for a client and we had reached an agreement with his wife who was a client of Act 4 Tomorrow. I called the organisation thinking it was a new law firm and asked if her client would prefer consent orders or a BFA and I was met with absolute silence, then Alvia said, ‘You are asking us what our client would like!?’. Then I received a phone call from Alvia a few days later asking if we could meet for coffee and we discovered we were very much on the same page, we were actually trying to help people.” Employed by Griffiths Parry Lawyers, Tracy has been a family lawyer for 12 years and says she was instantly drawn to Act 4 Tomorrow based on their unique system that puts the client first. “There are other mediation centres, but there is nothing quite like Act 4 Tomorrow that I have seen in all the years I have been practicing law, they really fill a gap,” says Tracy. “They just want to help people and that’s my focus. I do litigate of course, that’s part of my job and some matters do need that unfortunately, but for the most part I try to keep people out of court and that is what they are trying to do too, so it works really well.” And if the number of Tracy’s clients reaching an amicable agreement out of court is anything to go by, it’s a winning combination. “It’s saving people money, emotional stress and time devoted to litigation. I have clients litigating in the Family Court system at all times but the percentage who are now settling out of court since I have been working with Alvia seems to be higher,” she says.

And while Tracy, as a lawyer, can only act for one party to maintain independence, she says the ability Act 4 Tomorrow has in building a relationship with both sides, is key to their success. “Sometimes we have to write letters and that can come across as quite threatening and demanding and that is where Act 4 Tomorrow can come from a different perspective. They can build a relationship with both sides, whereas we are unable to do that,” she says. “Act 4 Tomorrow helps people in a very different way. They temper down the whole acrimony of the typical Family Law process.” Calm, poised and approachable, it’s not hard to see why Tracy is so highly regarded as a family lawyer and perfectly suited to helping couples through what can be a harrowing time and she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I absolutely love what I do. It’s interesting, no two days are the same, you are in court one day and mediation the next and most importantly you get to help people,” she says. “Some of the most enjoyable work I do is with Act 4 Tomorrow; it’s a really nice place to be, the girls are nice, it’s warm and welcoming and we really work as a team. “At the end of the day I spent years representing clients in the Family Court system. I have seen first hand the emotional and financial toll it takes upon people. That’s why my focus today is to help people navigate their separation as amicably and cost effectively as possible. Act 4 Tomorrow has a similar approach and that’s why I believe we work so well together.” 24

With almost two decades of experience under his belt, family lawyer and fatherof-two, Rob Hollis, knows a thing or two about helping couples navigate the separation process. Originally from the United Kingdom, Rob worked for one of the largest provincial firms in the Hertfordshire, Essex, Cambridge area before emigrating to the Sunshine Coast in 2006. After completing his conversion studies at QUT in 2007, Rob started at Greenhalgh Pickard in December 2008 and has been there ever since. Rob contacted Alvia ‘out of the blue’ having read an article about Act 4 Tomorrow that really resonated with him and what he liked to achieve. “I was reading a magazine and Alvia’s face popped up. She was clearly focused on resolving family law disputes out of court and for me any system that can avoid court, where appropriate, is good. So I

I’m concerned with their long-term best interests, and for that they need to hear the GOOD and the BAD. I believe we, as a lawyers, have a DUTY to do this.” dropped her an email and it all went from there,” says Rob. “I truly think the real benefit of the process with Act 4 Tomorrow is that you have like-minded lawyers working together. It wouldn’t work otherwise. “I didn’t know Tracy [Price] was involved prior to meeting with Alvia but I had worked with Tracy professionally before and we both appeared to have the same focus on settlement where possible.” Driven to ensure an appropriate and timely settlement, with the least amount of time and stress, Rob says this is possible to achieve if all parties are on board. “If clients are committed to an out-ofcourt settlement and willing to participate

constructively, there is a very good chance of settling through this process. If they are looking to argue and have their day in court, this process is not for them.” The only male lawyer in the team, Rob is renowned for his fair and upfront approach, which he says ensures realistic expectations among his clients. “If you give clients realistic, honest advice at the start, it solves problems. People often don’t want to hear what I say initially however I’m concerned with their long-term best interests, and for that they need to hear the good and the bad. I believe we, as lawyers, have a duty to do this,” he says. “Ultimately a court might tell them the very same things, after they have spent a lot of time, money and stress. “Often there is a perception of a female bias in the system but I think once you break it down, and explain it fully, people can see it as much fairer. Men often seem to prefer figures so when you put it to them in black and white, they get it.” Rob says working closely with Act 4 Tomorrow allows him to focus on the essence of what the client is wanting to know and achieve, Alvia already having done the background work to prepare them for that part of the process. “The background information Alvia provides is a great benefit to us. It gives us a good starting point of where the client is at and saves us a lot of time,” says Rob. “It means we can generally drill straight down to the issues. At the end of the day, achieving what is best for the client is the most important thing and that is what we are all aiming for.”

There is something about family law and the people and the RELATIONSHIPS which RESONATES with me.”

LOUISE WARD Describing herself as, “Not a typical lawyer”, Louise Ward has worked hard to focus separating families on avoiding the court process and resolving their differences. “There is something about family law and the people and the relationships which resonates with me,” she says. A lawyer for 12 years, Louise gained wide experience and established herself as a family lawyer in Brisbane and moved to London where she worked and travelled the UK and Europe before returning home to the Sunshine Coast and opening her own practice. “I started my own business to practice family law my way. I wanted to give sensible, clear advice early on and provide people with the information and opportunity to work it out themselves rather than take an aggressive approach.” It was this calm and measured approach that led a mutual friend to introduce Alvia and Louise based on their like-minded ethos and they formed an instant bond. “We got along straight away – we had the same values and goals,” says Louise, who was the first of the three lawyers to partner with Alvia, paving the way for what would become a unique partnership between them and the other two lawyers who would later join them. “The separation process with Act 4 Tomorrow promotes informed decision making. Each client is provided with independent legal advice and the opportunity to engage in respectful communications to resolve a range of matters that are specific to their circumstance.

“Family law has evolved. We are aware of the impact of conflict on our children. We are aware of how our brain responds during prolonged trauma. We are placing greater importance on our relationships, and separating families are recognising the benefits of maintaining a working family unit or moving on with their lives with respect and dignity.” The gentle and softly-spoken mother-oftwo and step-mother-of-two lives happily with her partner on the Sunshine Coast. Louise’s days are busy but she has never been more content and happy. She says starting her own business was the best decision she ever made and one which led her to a fantastic partnership with Act 4 Tomorrow. “Act 4 Tomorrow is a breath of fresh air for separating families, with their ability to create constructive dialogue and an enduring resolution.” profilemagazine

Get behind the wheel of the new Mercedes-Benz E-300 Coupé or Cabriolet and you may very well not want to leave. And why would you? Elegant, intelligent and luxurious to drive, it’s no wonder this classy vehicle turns heads wherever she goes.

F

irst impressions count and from the moment I laid eyes on the sleek gun metal grey coupé that was to be my chariot for the weekend, I knew I was in for a real treat. And that was before I had experienced the pillowy soft ride, stunning leather interior and incredible smart technology the Mercedes-Benz E-300 Coupé had to offer. Wrapped in the comfort of the heated leather seats, the first thing you notice as you pull away in this prestigious vehicle is

the near-silent engine and ultra smooth feel on the road. Fitted with air body control air suspension, it feels as though you are gliding. The cockpit-like dashboard was like a playground for my tech-loving husband offering just about every smart feature imaginable including a huge infotainment screen, 360-degree reversing camera, satellite navigation, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Importantly, even those who are a little less tech-savvy (like me) will find the state-ofthe-art technology easy to navigate. I was equally impressed with the interior LED lighting, which beautifully illuminates the car when night falls and there are 64 different colours to choose from! It’s nearly impossible to sit in the front of an E-Class and not find just the right seating position, which goes way beyond the standard seating adjustments and even allows you to pick the right height of the headrest and length of the seat cushion. And with a big height difference between my husband and I, being able the save up to three profiles for each seat, along with steering wheel and mirror settings, was a big plus. Taking us from a waterfront wedding one day to Kenilworth countryside the next, the E-Class was just as much a dream to drive around town as it was on the open road. And what better way to test the driving capabilities of this beautifully-engineered vehicle than a spin through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland on a lazy Sunday for a spot of lunch. Sticking to the winding terrain like glue, and cornering like it was on rails, the car really came into its own. Incredibly

responsive, the powerful 4-cylinder, 180 kilowatt turbocharged engine (also available in 6-cylinder bi-turbo all-wheeldrive) made it an effortless ride. The absence of window pillars and frameless doors allowed for uninterrupted views, which was a big hit with our backseat passengers, Miss Nine and friend. Mercedes is well known for its excellent safety rating so it’s little wonder the E-Class qualifies for a maximum five star ANCAP safety rating. Fitted with nine airbags, the sophisticated car also monitors the distance to the vehicle in front, keeps you in lane, watches out for traffic signs for you and keeps its eyes open at junctions. It even knows what’s happening in the blind spot – told you she was intelligent! Our vehicle was also fitted with the vision pack, which included a sunroof and heads up display on the windscreen, which both my husband and I found very handy. Sleek, classy and oh so glamorous, what’s not to love about the MercedesBenz E-300 Coupé and Cabriolet? The hardest part of driving this beauty was saying goodbye.

The effervescent Judi Barrkman has one of those infectious personalities that could light up any room. So it’s quite fitting that the woman with the bright and bubbly nature has designed a range kaftans with equally as vibrant qualities.

JUDI BARRKMAN

K

aftans are only a small part of Judi Barrkman’s story, albeit a fitting symbol for the journey she’s taken. She’s travelled the world, worked in a range of different jobs, from cigarette girl to wedding co-ordinator. But it’s the most recent bout of health issues that have impacted on Judi’s life the most. She doesn’t let it define her; today she’s a beaming ray of positivity with an incredible story of discovery to tell. Born in Brisbane, Judi grew up in a creative family with two sisters who were eight and 10 years her senior. Judi’s parents separated when she was young and she grew up with her mother who ran a bed and breakfast in Clayfield. After school, she moved to Sydney and worked in advertising for a few years before heading overseas in her mid 20s where her two deepest loves were realised; travel and hospitality. “I got a job at the Golders Green train station in London cooking for all the bus and train drivers. I got a real thing for cooking and I always wanted to open a café, that was kind of my dream,” she says. But it wasn’t until Judi scored a job

rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous as a cigarette girl at the renowned Quaglinos restaurant that she discovered the best job of her life. “I literally walked about in a black velvet outfit with a tray selling cigars and cigarettes. It’s a really posh, full on restaurant with lots of famous people, and it was a real novelty because the venue had been there since the ‘30s. I met Princess Diana, Sylvester Stallone, Annie Lennox, Gillian Anderson, Roger Moore.” After a few years of exploring Europe and the UK, Judi returned to Australia where she pursued her dream of owning her own cafe. She worked in Darwin, Sydney and finally fulfilled her dream of owning a café when she moved to Melbourne. “That’s what I always wanted to do. That was the dream and it was amazing. I was at the café in Melbourne for five years and had a blast, living the dream,” she says. Eventually Judi made her way back to Queensland when love saw her move to the Sunshine Coast, where she’s been ever since.

For a year I had no breasts, because I wanted to see if I could cope living with no boobs, and I didn’t like it. I swim a lot and I’m also pretty RELAXED in my dress style. You feel very SELF CONSCIOUS.”

In 2013, Judi went for a routine pap smear and her doctor decided to do a breast examination. “My father had just died from cancer a month or so beforehand in Sydney, so that had been very traumatic. My GP found a lump, so I had my mammogram and the results came back as highly suspicious of cancer.” With no history of breast cancer in her family, Judi anxiously undertook a biopsy and a fine needle aspiration. What followed was a very traumatic and suspenseful period for Judi and her family. profilemag.com.au

My tribe of people; that’s what has gotten me through and that’s what makes you STRONG. The support I have around me is just AMAZING.”

The biopsy came back clear but her surgeon was still suspicious of the lump. They operated and found there was cancer all through Judi’s left breast. “Luckily it hadn’t exploded out of the ducts yet – they got it really early. So the treatment was to have my breast removed.” On top of the breast cancer, Judi had suffered from a hereditary kidney disease her whole life. “I was 21 when I picked that up. Mum decided that she didn’t want us to know from a young age that we would possibly have this disease because she thought it would change things for us. She wanted us to just live free from it for as long as possible,” she says. Due to impending kidney failure that doctors had suspected Judi would suffer from in her 60s, she made the decision to have both her breasts removed. “So the decision to have them both off was partly based on the kidney disease because they won’t transplant you within three to five years of having had cancer. So my concern was, if I only got one breast removed and it came back in another breast later in life, I wouldn’t be able to

have the transplant and I’d have to be on dialysis for years until I was past that period of time,” she explains. Judi had the double mastectomy in September 2013 and decided not to have a reconstruction after much deliberation. “For a year I had no breasts, because I wanted to see if I could cope living with no boobs, and I didn’t like it. I swim a lot and I’m also pretty relaxed in my dress style. You feel very self conscious,” she says. But as they say, there is always a silver lining, and Judi’s was stumbling upon what is now her kaftan business Ruby and Raven. “Three months after that my partner at the time and I went to India. I’d been a couple times before. It’s a place that whenever you need to put things into perspective, go to India,” she says. “So I went there, no boobs, very self conscious. We were in this shop and I bought this beautiful kaftan and felt so much better because it was all loose and flowy. Everywhere I went women were coming up to me asking me where I got it and telling me I look amazing.” At the time, Judi was looking for a career change, as she suspected that the years of stress in hospitality was one of the causes of the cancer. Another moment of kismet followed and everything fell into place. “I’d met this guy, Niyas, while we were there, we just got into his cab one day and he and I just seemed to hit it off.” She came back to Australia and had the strongest sense that she wanted to do something for Niyas’ family who was struggling to put food on the table and keep their house from literally falling down. Judi employed Niyas to help her

with Ruby and Raven and he began finding her fabrics, tailors and suppliers. “He co-ordinates everything there. I entrusted him with all this money, he could have ripped it off and to date he’s been spot on. And now he’s rebuilt his house,” she says. In the meantime, Judi decided to get the breast reconstruction, which brought back her confidence. It was 2015 and Judi was starting life afresh with a newfound zest for life. “I moved up to Sunrise Beach. Got back into it, pumped. Life moves on. Single. New boobs. Let’s do it!” she says excitedly. But then Judi’s kidney function started crashing and by September that year it had fallen below 20 per cent. “I had a complete meltdown because I’d just been through all that, and financially I was really starting to get in a pickle,” she says. Little did Judi know, she had a saviour by her side since she was 13 years old. Her best friend, Kerryn, had always said that she would give her a kidney when the time came. After months of testing, they found she was a match. “I don’t think there would be a truer test of friendship or a more generous thing you could do. A complete legend. She has been part of my family for years but now she’s the other sister,” says Judi. Kerryn was able to go home the day after surgery, but Judi had a long road to recovery, including numerous medications (and their side effects), a stint of neutropenia, a virus called CMV, and mental health issues. Thankfully in the last two months Judi is back on her feet again with a brand new perspective. “I’ve given up smoking and drinking, and I’m vegan. I’m doing lots of swimming, walking and eating raw foods. I’m just going for it,” she says. “I want to enjoy life, slow it down, keep it simple. My tribe of people; that’s what has gotten me through and that’s what makes you strong. The support I have around me is just amazing. You don’t go through all that without changing and without wanting a different life.” profilemagazine

Creative IN-TENTS-LY

After witnessing years of stressful and disorganised children’s parties, Suzy and Jason Sims came up with a creative idea that takes the hassle out of hosting. What they discovered was a sought after event solution that could make any celebration absolutely stress-free and beautiful.

JASON AND SUZY SIMS. PHOTO BY CULLEN COLLECTION

T

hese days a party or event of any sort involves a lot more than throwing a sausage on bread and pulling out a few camping chairs. Weddings, anniversaries, engagements, birthday and children’s parties have taken on a life of their own thanks to Instagram and Pinterest inspiring hosts to up their game. People want to wow their guests with #Instaworthy set ups, complete with decorations, photo booths, seating arrangements, catering and the list goes on. With this in mind, Suzy Sims recognised the strain parties were putting on parents, after 22 years as a professional face painter. “It can be quite stressful for parents who have to get to the park early to get a barbeque and set up all the food and decorations,” she says. Suzy partnered with her husband to come up with a solution. Using Jason’s background in finance and business, Suzy’s years of experience in children’s events and a shared love of camping, the business idea was a no brainer. The inspiration hit and the ideas started to flow. “It started as just children’s parties and it evolved into offering slumber parties, not only for the kids but for adults too, such as

hen parties. We also offer chill out zones that are tastefully decorated with soft lighting, low tables and floor cushions for any events,” she says. “We do all the work in pitching, styling and packing down so that you have more time to relax”. Suzy’s creative streak shines through when she styles the tents. “My passion is in creating spaces and making sure people have a beautiful experience. I’m really into detail and the finishing touches and making things look beautiful. When people hire them I want them to say ‘Wow’,” she says. Although the business is only new, the tents have sparked a lot of attention and ‘wows’ already. They cater not only to individual parties, but large corporate groups that are after something unique. The sky’s the limit for this creative couple and we can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with next!

RIDING HIGH WORDS NICOLE FUGE PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

Technologically savvy in drive and design, the new Toyota C-HR Coupe High Rider will have you buzzing with excitement. The Toyota C-HR is so tech-smart I was anticipating it to start speaking to me, and given my hornet yellow ride was aptly nicknamed Bumble Bee (after the Transformers movie) that wouldn’t have been out of character. Made with the career woman in mind, aged 25+, I knew the Toyota C-HR and I would get along perfectly; taking me to dinner with friends in Maroochydore on Friday night, brunch with my husband in Maleny on Saturday morning and down to Caloundra for lunch on Sunday, with a visit to the shops in between, 250-odd kilometers using half a tank of fuel. The 1.2L Turbo engine and 7-speed transmission made for a cruisy ride with plenty of pep – whether it be for around town driving during the week or

those longer adventure escapes on the weekend. And then there’s the interior, which lends itself perfectly to a very comfortable drive; complete with leather-accented heated front seats, which have been designed to curve with the arch of your back, and dual air conditioning providing true climate control (perfect for my husband and I, who are like fire and ice). Further adding to the personalisation of your experience is the ease in which you can connect your phone to the touch-screen and satellite-navigation system, which has limited capabilities while driving, being a strong safety feature, however it can be frustrating not having full access to the system even when a passenger is in the front seat. What I love most about the car, is its 18” alloy wheels and strong lower body styling, giving it a powerful lifted feel – perfect for someone who is 5ft 2” – while retaining the mobility of a small car. This not only means it’s a dream to drive, but it’s

This next-generation system can also detect vehicles as they approach your blind spot, using the Blind Spot Monitor, and the Rear Cross Traffic Alert lets you know if there is a car or obstruction behind you, when in reverse.

easy to park, made even easier with the reversing camera. As a car boasting all of the tech bells and whistles, one of the most impressive features is the Active Cruise Control, part of the Toyota Safety Sense package, which also includes PreCollision Safety System, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beam. When travelling a long distance, cruise control enables you to settle into the drive (without losing concentration of course) in a way I’ve never experienced before, as once you’ve set the speed limit, if the car in front slows, your car will slow, to ensure a safe distance; it will even come to a complete stop, without you needing to touch the brake. This next-generation system can also detect vehicles as they approach your blind spot, using the Blind Spot Monitor, and the Rear Cross Traffic Alert lets you know if there is a car or obstruction behind you, when in reverse. As someone who learnt to drive without such technologies, it’s still something to get used to and I still rely on a visual glance over my shoulder to check my blind spot, which is a little difficult in the C-HR, due to its smaller rear windows. Perhaps I’m showing my age and it’s a progressive sign of the times, where drivers put increasing trust in their car’s capabilities. If that’s the case, you’re in safe hands.

BEWARE THE CHILD WHO DOES NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE “FUN” PARENT PIPPA COLMAN | DIRECTOR OF PIPPA COLMAN & ASSOCIATES

With each school holiday period, comes an increased number of enquiries from separated parents, about the child’s wishes and wants after having time with their contact parent. Shared parenting can be difficult at the best of times, without school holiday periods adding to the pressure.

T

he contact parent is generally the one who has less time with the child or children on a week-by-week basis, but tends to have more block periods of care during school holidays. During school holiday periods, the children usually spend time with the contact parent participating in fun activities that they may not experience with the primary carer. There is also the

They might even say that they want to live permanently with the contact parent. And who wouldn’t want to live with the parent who seems to be less STRICT and have less rules and who doesn’t NAG them about homework and chores.”

fact that the contact parent hasn’t had to maintain the daily routine of getting them ready for school and checking that all the homework has been completed.

Instead they may get to stay up a bit later, as they don’t need to get up early for school. They may also spend more time playing with their friends who are also on holidays. Some may even get to go away for their holidays to another city or place and experience a whole range of fun things that they normally don’t do. So it is not surprising that at the end of the holidays, the children express their wish to remain with the contact parent and not return back to their primary carer. Who wouldn’t want to be known as the “fun” parent? The difficulty is the contact parent feels as if the child really does want to live with them for genuine reasons. And this may be the case in some matters. The reality for many is that they have not properly thought through what they are expressing and why they feel that way at the time. In the event that you find yourself in this situation, ask yourself – do you believe that your child or children genuinely want to live with you for reasons other than the “funtastic” time they have just had with you? You also need to keep in mind that the prevailing factor in all children’s matters is what is in the child’s best interests. If you believe the answer to be yes, then get some advice before you take any action.

In 2011 he moved to the Sunshine Coast and loved it so much he convinced his now-fiance to join him. For the first few years on the Coast, David worked in emergency and it wasn’t until a couple of his colleagues began working in injectables that David decided it might be the right path for him too. “It was something that I thought I would try to see how I felt about it while I was still doing emergency work. But then I just loved doing it and it was very procedural, which is what I enjoy. The job satisfaction is a lot higher than doing emergency. I just gave that side of things up,” he says. The feeling is mutual for David’s

in-house nurse/health and fitness-lover, Alana, who worked in hospitals and medical centres before launching into cosmetic injectables. “I started learning a bit about it and I thought, ‘Yep, that’s for me!’ I spent two years in Perth working in a clinic and learnt a lot of my skills there. And then came across to the Sunshine Coast and started working at Inject Skin with David,” says Alana. “Shift work is obviously a big thing with nursing. Now I’m working normal hours, being able to see people repeatedly and building a relationship with them. Whereas in the hospital it’s just too fast paced. You don’t get to spend the time looking after your patients, it’s more task orientated.”

The pair is joined in the clinic by clinic manager and beauty therapist, Jacinta, who met David in Melbourne when he was flying in and out at the start of his work in injectables. “I studied beauty therapy for a few years then I got into management, managing a number of cosmetic treatment clinics and beauty salons. We started introducing injectables into our clinic and I think it was great to be able to treat the skin from different levels. There are some things that you can’t get through skin treatments alone – but it’s also vice versa – if somebody has unhealthy skin the injectables aren’t going to do everything for them.” The passionate team has seen both sides to the industry, working for larger chain skin and laser clinics, where there was more of a sales focus and it was less about the customer. That encouraged them to open Inject Skin, to offer clients an alternative to rushed treatments, that aren’t always necessary. “I think it’s so unethical in our industry (to be sales focused), because people forget what we do (in particular for injectable treatments) are medical procedures,” says David, “It’s a prescription medication and there are places that are trying to upsell you. I have a problem with this. “It’s also very important to offer a range of treatment modalities. If you go and see a cosmetic injector, they’re going to sell you on injectables, which may be the last thing you need. We offer gold standard treatments for skin quality and texture, pigmentation, sun damage, etc. It’s our job to ensure clients get the right treatment and the best results, and I think we do our job pretty well.” David focuses on honesty and quality and won’t perform a procedure on a client unless it’s totally necessary. All of the products and technologies in the clinic are evidence and science based, and while David admits it’s a more expensive way to do things, it achieves the best results. Doubling the length of appointments

also means he can sit down and listen to the client’s concerns and make them as comfortable as possible. It’s a welcome change in an industry where a lot of clinics are rushing clients in and out to make as many sales as possible. David encourages people to ask questions when they’re going to get these sort of treatments and to ensure they know how long the person injecting them has been working in the industry. He’s paving the way in the beauty and injectable industry to make sure patients are receiving the best treatment possible.

SIMONE AND TEDDY HENRIKSEN

great

chemistry

WORDS NICOLE FUGE PHOTOS CULLEN COLLECTION

Having met as undergraduates, Teddy and Simone Henriksen have been on the frontline as pharmacists and business partners. Now, three decades on; they are classmates exploring the interface between law and health. But it’s the navigation of Simone’s own health journey which will be the greatest testament of their strength and unity.

T

eddy Henriksen still remembers the sound of his wife’s laugh, echoing through the crowd at a welcome dinner for the National Pharmacy Conference in Sydney over 30 years ago. The two were undergraduates, Teddy from the University of Queensland and Simone from the University of Sydney. Bound by instant attraction, the pair had great chemistry, a trait indicative of their relationship today. Teddy and Simone bought their first pharmacy in Gatton in 1994, and went

on to own a day and night pharmacy in Toowoomba as well as a seven-day pharmacy in Maleny. It seems interest in health and science is genetic, with two of their three children pursuing a career in that field. Their 21-year-old daughter Sophie has recently finished a degree in animal and veterinary bioscience and is now studying pharmacy at the University of Sydney, being lectured by people Simone went to uni with. Their 18-year-old daughter Corinne is in her first year at UQ studying exercise and nutrition science, living at Cromwell College where Teddy did all those years ago. Meanwhile, their 20-year-old son, Alex has inherited their business management genes and forging a career in the local real estate industry in Caloundra. In 2007, they sold the Toowoomba business and in 2010, sold Maleny, moving the family to their current home in Pelican Waters. “It’s difficult owning a pharmacy in town and living in town from the point of view of going out, because inevitably

you’d go to the IGA to get groceries and someone would come up to you, ‘Teddy I’ve got this rash, what do you recon it is?’” he says with a laugh. Having always operated within the rural setting, they tried their hand at owning a pharmacy in Brisbane, which they admit, wasn’t the smartest decision and sold it after four years. “It was very difficult to make the transition to a city pharmacy because in the other three pharmacies we had, we knew the doctors around there and had a really good working relationship with them and other health professionals,” says Simone. At a professional crossroads and yearning change, Teddy and Simone returned to university; this time each taking on honours degrees in law, chasing a challenge to extend their traditional pharmacy roles. “We didn’t want to go back to owning, because yes you make money but it comes at a cost, we wanted freedom, you can either have freedom or money and you can’t have both at the same time. The kids are older we don’t want to be tied to business,” says Simone. Having always had an interest in how and why medicinal drugs work, Teddy is studying patenting strategies related to the release of biosimilar drugs in Australia, which are used to treat many chronic illnesses, such as cancer, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.

“Biosimilars are a subset of biologic drugs. Biologics use bacterial or other cells in the production process. The most well known biologic is insulin, when we were first at uni they used to use bovine insulin from cattle and there were a lot of reactions and not everyone could take it, then they went to porcine insulin, from pigs, which was a little bit better. Then in the 1980s they started to genetically engineer bacteria to produce insulin, so now all the insulins we have on the market are human insulin and that’s why you don’t get the immune responses to the drug that you used to back in the 1960s and ‘70s,” he says. “The trouble with biologic drugs is they are inherently tricky to manufacture, very small changes in temperature, ph, or

whatever else can throw the whole thing out the window.” As part of his honours thesis, Teddy is trying to determine whether biosimilar molecules can be patented. “A lot of people know about generics. Generics are copies of small size synthetic drugs. For example, aspirin has 21 atoms in each molecule and can be reproduced exactly. Some of the smaller biologics contain 2000 to 4000 atoms in a very complex 3D structure. To produce an exact copy of a biologic is almost impossible, hence bioSIMILAR. The question of patents arises because they are not identical to the originator.” Teddy drew on these findings when he presented at the recent Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s annual conference in Sydney. Meanwhile Simone is investigating how the self-regulation of Australia’s privatelyrun drug rehabilitation centres affects the health outcomes and consumer protection of patients. “In Australia at the moment, anyone can open a rehabilitation clinic, which includes anything from alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs like speed, heroin and cocaine or prescription medication, opiate-based painkillers that people can get addicted to,” she says. “An addict has very complex needs, they often have mental health issues, they need a whole range of treatments, they may have other health issues related to their addiction. “If we don't treat properly, they're not only incurring costs to themselves through their own health, but they are not participating productive members of society. “Because it’s not regulated there are a lot of exploitive practices out there and I’m looking at what we can do to fix that. I’ve compared it with the regulation in the public system, any registered health professional has really strict rules around what they can advertise, how they can treat, what services they can offer and who can operate a clinic; whereas there

is no control over entry into the private rehabilitation industry, they can offer whatever services they like, they can charge whatever they like, they can advertise whatever they want.” The pair will finish their studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast in mid 2018, not only a milestone in their careers, but also a major achievement for Simone, who has also been overcoming her own health issues. “In exam time last semester I found a lump, I wasn’t concerned as I had no family history of breast cancer, which I’ve since found out doesn’t mean a thing. Onein-eight women get diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s pretty common, which I’m very happy about because it’s very treatable,” she says optimistically. “I’ve always done a breast self examination and maybe that’s because I’m a pharmacist, but there are a number of women who don’t do it, don’t know how to do it, or don’t know what they’re looking for. I didn't know what I was looking for, I just knew it would be something that wasn’t normal. If I can give anyone any advice, it’s to examine yourself regularly.” As soon as Simone finished her exams in July, she went to her GP and was told she had invasive ductal carcinoma in the breast. Eight days after being diagnosed, Simone underwent surgery to have the lump removed as well as the lymph nodes in the left armpit. A week later she was in Sydney supporting Teddy in his presentation at the pharmaceutical conference. “It was the oncologist who encouraged me to continue with uni, I had to give up work straight away, but they said I need to keep my mind active otherwise I’ll get chemo brain,” she says. Despite being plagued with immense fatigue, Simone says she tries to pace herself in her studies, and is anticipating the end of her treatment in February. Looking into her husband’s eyes, the pair share a laugh; they are even more in love than the day they met. profilemagazine

SKIN HYDRATION

with Dr Ali Araghi

EXPERTS

Hydration loss in the skin is a natural part of the ageing process. The main reason for the ageing of the skin is oxidation in the skin and the gradual loss of intrinsic hyaluronic acid (HA).

I love exercising, but sometimes I find it too hot in summer, how can I get around this? BEAT THE HEAT

with Chris McMillan, Cancer Council Queensland CEO 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity or 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day is recommended, but you should take certain precautions when exercising in the hotter months and be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. Here are seven tips to help you sweat it out safely. 1. Acclimatise. Start with short, low-intensity workouts and increase gradually over two weeks or more. 2. Hydrate. Ensure you keep up your water intake and have a refillable bottle on hand. The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommends that in a mild climate, an average person needs to drink about a litre-and-a-half of fluids each day. Much more may be needed to prevent the body becoming dehydrated in hotter temperatures. 3. Be sun-ready. Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and protective clothing help minimise the risk of the sun’s UV radiation. Apply SPF30 or higher broad-spectrum, waterthe holiday issue 2017

resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and check the UV levels using Cancer Council’s free SunSmart app. 4. Plan your training times. Avoid the hottest parts of the day (10am-3pm) and exercise in the early morning or late afternoon. 5. Have something to train for. Come up with a performancerelated goal or sign up to a fun run. A deadline will keep you motivated. 6. Seek water. Swimming is not just a way to cool off, but an excellent cardiovascular exercise. If swimming isn’t for you, try an aquajog, or if you live near the beach try running from the sand to waist height water. 7. Alter. When the weather’s taking the life out of your workout, use an indoor alternative – join a class or if you have air-conditioning at home, pop in a workout DVD; try running for time instead of distance on super-hot days or trade heatradiating roads for shaded loops where you can re-fill on water. As we age, we can lose up to two thirds of our naturally occurring HA in the skin. The skin’s thickness starts to decrease by 22 per cent on average from 35 years of age with the progressive effects being thinning, dehydration and loss of elasticity in the skin. A big contributor to our facial skin ageing is UV exposure from the sun, which is why it is essential to apply sunscreen daily to help combat the UV exposure. Hope is not all lost and there is a fantastic treatment that can help, called Redensity I ‘Beauty Booster’. It is a high concentration of natural HA with a combination of antioxidants to fight the oxidation of the skin, amino acids, minerals and vitamins. These are all already naturally occurring in the skin. The hyaluronic acid treatment consists of a series of three treatments with ‘top ups’ every six to 12 months and is designed to boost the skin radiance and prevent premature ageing. The treatment compensates for the natural loss of the HA in the skin and stimulates collagen production, helping smooth wrinkles, enhance radiance and help restore volume. Results from the treatment can be seen after the first session – you will notice a better tone, reduction in fine lines and improved hydration. These results increase gradually with each session.

The treatment only takes about 30 minutes in your doctor’s practice and as it is done with topical anaesthetic cream it is essentially painless with no downtime. Talk to your doctor about how they can help you with the Redensity I ‘Beauty Booster’. AUSTRALIAN WELLNESS & COSMETIC INSTITUTE awci.com.au Phone: 5438 8828 Suite 4&5/70 Nicklin Way, Buddina

ogelhaus is an interior designlover’s dream; welcomed through the entrance, which has been converted into a men’s den, you take a lazy right into the New York 5th Avenue room styled in their signature classic black and white, down the hall you’ll find the Clothing Closet with fashion and giftwares, the Inside Outside Collective boasting ergonomically designed furnishings, and upstairs is a Hamptonsinspired retreat. “Most retail stores are big boxes, but this is totally different,” Vogelhaus co-owner Graeme Haack says. “It was originally two old homes that were extended back in the 1950s to have a shop on the front on Gympie Road, with the big classic Queensland verandah across the front. The left hand side used to be the

Kedron General Store and the right hand one had a beautician and hairdresser. The houses were joined together over time.” It took Graeme and his wife Elisa six months to restore the building to its former glory, which you now see today. Throughout the renovation, they removed the ceilings and old red carpet, unveiling the bones of a beautiful building complete with brush box timber flooring. “When I saw it I knew it would be the type of building Elisa would like because it would make a creative point of difference in the industry,” he says. “And we’re on the main Gympie Road, so it gives us tremendous visibility.”

It’s good to have variation in the rooms you CREATE and there are quite a lot of styles around, for example, even in a MODERN room you can add an old antique French chair and it looks STUNNING.”

With chandeliers, black and white accents in the doorways and bold striped lines, Elisa says people are drawn into their business, attracted to the classic and stylish appeal of this Brisbane abode, featuring decorative designer lamps, unique artwork, sofas and chairs, tables, dressers, mirrors and rugs, to fashion and giftwares. Vogelhaus is where Elisa’s creativity comes alive, having been inspired by her mother and grandmother from a young age, and now imparting her passion to her three daughters, one of whom is an artist and poet, and another is a dancer. “My grandmother lived with us and I slept in the same room as her and she always bought me beautiful things. She used to be a needle woman and would paint murals on walls, so I was always painting as a child and using my mother’s sewing machine, and have always done embroidery. I remember I used to go out into the garden and decorate it; so I’ve always been that way,” says Elisa. “I later did an interior decorating

diploma and was looking at doing something within the industry when my daughter got sick with Crohn’s disease, so I stopped all of that for a few years. In the interim I’ve been working part time in a furniture store for 15 years, so I gained a lot of knowledge.” Graeme and Elisa met in Melbourne in 1978, and thanks to Elisa’s talented touch, they have enjoyed living in beautiful homes over the years. “Elisa was always very artistic and creative and in our first house people would marvel at the way she decorated it, she had a way in which to display the house, which was a semi-modern type in Melbourne, but she made it look really stylish,” Graeme says fondly. “Then we were overseas for some time and when we came back and built a home, she did a brilliant job. We’ve moved a couple of times since then, but it’s always been a forte of hers.” While Elisa flourished in her creativity, Graeme says his expertise lay in management and retail, having spent most of his career in the supermarket industry, including seven years in the Solomon Islands where he managed a retail wholesale operation. “We have owned IGA stores over the years and 15 years ago, when we sold a store we were talking about doing something together and using Elisa’s creativity, but with the kids it wasn’t the right time, so we bought another store and had that for 13 years,” he says. “So when we sold in June last year I was past the food industry, I’d been doing it all

my life and had the fire in my belly to do something different.” Vogelhaus opened in May this year, which has been styled to reflect Elisa’s personal taste, as well as injecting trending features, a trademark she passes on to her customers when decorating their own homes. “I love the New York 5th Avenue look with a touch of French provincial and Hamptons, I don’t like one set style, so I’ve intrinsically mixed styles together,” she says. “It’s good to have variation in the rooms you create and there are quite a lot of styles around, for example, even in a modern room you can add an old antique French chair and it looks stunning.” Vogelhaus also offers an in-house stylist and interior decorating service with private consultations available, each tailored to individual requirements and conducted in the convenience of your own home. “I love helping people, a lot are confused as to how to go about it and not sure what style or look they want, so it gives them a stepping stone,” she says. “We usually do one room first and then they can see how it flows on through the whole house, rather than doing everything at once. And if they have pieces of furniture they want left there, we work around that as well, because you don’t want a designer’s home, you want your own home.” If you’re looking for interior inspo, Vogelhaus is your primary source, where you can browse at your leisure and truly make yourself at home.

This upcoming season is all about delicious velvet materials, which can turn a drab piece of furniture into a showstopping centrepiece.

What this stunning Noosaville home lacks in size, it makes up for in atmosphere, design and style. Striking features, pared back with relaxed natural materials and plenty of bright spaces, makes the architecturally designed space an inviting and modern home for its owners and their guests.

T

he magnificent, architectural home with its large front lawn and gorgeous poinciana tree, welcomes you from the street. Home to Sue and John Hargreaves, the structure itself appears quite large from the curb, featuring two levels and a large entertaining and pool area on the first floor. But as they say, you should never judge a book (and in this case, a home) by its cover. What you’ll discover as you walk past the hand painted artwork at the top of the stairs, and into the heart of the home, is that it only has two bedrooms. “It gives you the illusion of a big house, but as you can see it’s not,” says Sue. These days, it’s rare to come across a brand new two bedroom home, as most

of us are opting for larger spaces and at least a few bedrooms when building. But as Sue explains, they were ready to downsize. And the final product is a massive success thanks to architect Jolyon Robinson, who originally designed the Hargreaves’ large family home in Doonan some 14 years ago. “My philosophy in using an architect is that they are the expert. I like his work. That’s what attracted me initially because I saw some of their work in a magazine,” she says. Beautiful materials like timber, glass and corrugated iron give the home that quintessentially Australian feel. High ceilings, louvers, large sliding glass doors and a wide open living space create a relaxed and breezy atmosphere, which Sue says limits the need for heating and cooling.

“Jolyon designed it so we can open it up and catch a cross breeze. It didn’t need any heating in winter because the sun streams in here in the morning,” she says. One of the home’s most striking features would have to be the all-navy kitchen. Sue had her heart set on the colour scheme from day one, and had to do a fair bit of convincing to get it over the line. While she gave Jolyon almost full creative license, this one was a non-negotiable. Once Sue had managed to get everyone on board there was the trouble of finding a material in a flat-navy colour. They tracked down a navy concrete bench, but as it had to come from the USA, they were concerned about the concrete cracking. Eventually they found the perfect material – marblo, a by-product of corian (a material that is regularly used in kitchens). And the pendant lights had to be spray painted by a local painter to get the exact colour to match the rest of the kitchen. profilemag.com.au

Another beautiful and practical feature in the home is the large, open office space. It’s situated between the two large bedrooms and has built-in shelves and plenty of natural light. “If we ever left, it could be converted into another bedroom,” says Sue, addressing the need for space if it was ever required. Perhaps the most impressive element in the abode actually came about by accident. The large sliding timber door that opens onto the front patio was supposed to be covered in white gyprock until Jolyon and Sue fell in love with the bare timber that you see today. Sue’s creative touch is evident in the styling of the home. Understated, sophisticated furniture allows the standout features like the timber door and navy the holiday issue 2017

kitchen do all the talking. The colour palette of white, navy and timber/orange are scattered throughout every room without being too overpowering. As they’d only been in the home for one month at the point of photographing, the Hargreaves were yet to pick furniture for the central outdoor area surrounded by an impressive timber frame. One detail Sue had used however, was the quirky bird made from palm fronds who sits happily on a swing from the arbor. “I bought him in Byron Bay about 16 years ago. In my other house, he stood for 14 years in the pool. Then his legs started to rot away and I couldn’t get rid of him,” Sue laughs. With its ideal design for entertaining and living, something tells me this home will witness a lot of laughs in the future.

Using a rolling pin, crush the

candy canes, while still in their plastic packaging. Once they are all crushed to a relatively fine consistency, set aside. Put the milk chocolate in a microwave-proof dish and melt in the microwave on a high heat, stirring every 30 seconds. Once completely melted, pour the chocolate into the prepared tray, smooth with the back of a spoon, and place in the fridge to set. Melt the white chocolate using the same method as mentioned earlier, and pour on top of the

milk chocolate, spreading with a spoon until smooth. Cut the ends off the candy cane packaging and sprinkle over the white chocolate. Then place in the fridge to set. Once completely set, carefully cut into squares. Keep in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. You can use regular sized candy canes or hard boiled lollies. I use the small candy canes as you can crush them in the packaging and sprinkle without creating a mess.

FESTIVE FOODIE TRADITIONS GERMANY: Stollen is fruit cake dusted with icing sugar which is eaten during the Christmas season, called Weihnachtsstollen or Christstollen. CANADA: Many families have cookie exchanging parties where everyone brings a recipe and they bake together. Everyone then goes home with a mixed batch of cookies. POLAND: Borscht (beetroot soup) is served as a starter on Christmas Eve. CHINA: People give ‘peace apples’ on Christmas Eve because the word for Christmas Eve, píng’ān yè, sounds very similar to the word for apple, píngguǒ. SWEDEN: The main feast, Julbord, happens on Christmas Eve, which is a buffet of pickled herring, gravlax (raw cured salmon), paté, knäckebröd (crispbread), ham, meatballs with beetroot salad and lutfisk (preserved cod).

FRANCE: Families have their Christmas meal, le réveillon de Noël, on Christmas Eve after the late Christmas mass service and for dessert they eat Bûche de Noël (chocolate log). DENMARK: Ris á la mande (rice pudding) is served for dessert on Christmas Day. One whole almond is hidden in the pudding and whoever finds it receives a present. RUSSIA: Some people choose to fast for 40 days before Christmas, which they celebrate on 7 January. To end the fast, they eat sochivo (porridge), which symbolises unity. They also throw a spoonful of the porridge onto the ceiling and if it sticks, it means good luck and a good harvest for the family. SPAIN: Jamón (dry-cured ham) is traditionally served for dinner and turrón (nougat) is served for dessert.

FLAVOUR TRENDS FOR 2018 • It will be more common to enjoy the most important meal of the day, at any time of day – bacon and eggs for dinner and waffles for dessert? Sounds like a crowd-pleaser to me • Dehydrated fruits will make a big comeback • Fermented foods will become even more popular, as people pay more attention to their digestive system, gut health and good bacteria

AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Caught in a whirlwind of fad diets and quick fixes, only to find they were doing more damage to their bodies and self esteem, Emma and Carla Papas knew there had to be a better way – a healthier and more joyous journey through food.

E

mma and Carla Papas are beautiful souls who truly practice what they preach. With boundless energy and smiles that never fade, the sisters have found a way to bring a more realistic approach to leading a healthy and happy life – holistically. “We both loved cooking as kids,” says Carla, “We can remember heading down to the grocery store to pick up ingredients during school holidays. They were packet mixes, mind you, but we still loved baking and cooking. We always loved to help Mum in the kitchen, grating the cheese,

helping coat the schnitzels and of course, licking the bowl!” Then, during early adulthood, Emma and Carla found themselves in a place so many of us have been before – fed up with counting calories, tired of the guilt they felt after eating and plagued with low self-esteem. “We were in this obsessive whirlwind of fad diets, quick fixes and negative body image, and when we looked around, this seemed completely normal, everyone was spinning,” says Emma. “We’d both just completed a 12-week

diet and exercise plan, which was not designed for health but to lose weight. We were over the moon, we’d reached our goal weights but with our ‘perfect bodies’ we found we were tired, moody and cold all the time, and our periods completely disappeared. “This unhealthy way of living needed to stop, so we searched for something that would work.” Real food was the answer, and became the catalyst for creating The Merrymaker Sisters. “Being the food lovers we always have been, we started to share photos of our healthy foodie creations to our personal social media accounts and our followers started to grow organically,” says Emma. Having both worked in the communication industry and bursting with a desire to inspire through health and happiness, in 2013, Emma and Carla decided to start a blog, where they could document their recipes and help many others who were craving the answers. “Our overall mission for The Merrymaker Sisters is to create a healthy, happy, more magic-filled world. We do that by creating a safe and fun community where everyone is welcome to come, learn and get inspired to make positive changes to their lives,” says Emma. Their audience has since flourished to 250,000 internationally, they have published two cookbooks and even launched their own app, which reached number one in just nine hours. Emma and Carla have also partnered profilemag.com.au

Eating REAL FOOD brought us so much joy, when we started our blog we Googled synonyms for the word ‘joy’, up popped merrymake – which means to bring JOY to. We’re real life sisters so we decided on The Merrymaker Sisters. Everyone can be a Merrymaker when they choose to EAT HEALTHY, think happy and create their own magic.” – CARLA With a new year, comes a fresh start, a clean slate, and I ask Emma and Carla what their advice is for anyone wanting to turn their life around, to live a happier, merrymaker life. “Remember that all it takes is one small step to begin. Then another and another. The secret to getting anything done is to start. Make a decision, declare you’re going to do it and begin. Whether it’s starting with your food choices, mindset, movement, relationships or career, choose one and see the ripple effect start to take place across other areas of your life.” Sage advice for 2018!

But what I find most inspiring about these two, is the bond they have – they are not only sisters, but best friends and business partners, and have found great success in their magic. “The secret is having open communication with each other,” says Emma. “Work when you work and rest when you rest, it’s all about balance – not hustle. And the biggest factor is alignment; doing work that actually sets your heart on fire the holiday issue 2017

and having the courage to stop projects and work that doesn’t align with your true nature/purpose/passion.” Now, their food philosophy is centered on finding what works for you and doing what makes you feel good, they call it ‘bio-individuality’; the idea that everyone’s view of being healthy is different and every body thrives on different fuel. Carla says that then extends to other parts of our lives, including movement, mindfulness and bliss. “When you live a merrymaker lifestyle, you eat real food. We cut out the processed crap and instead fill our plates with ridiculously yummy food like veggies, fruit, good quality meat, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and good fats, and small amounts of dairy,” she says.

HEALTHY, WEALTHY & WISE ... WORDS INGRID NELSON PHOTOS MISTER MISTRESS VENUE CHOW

Good health, financial security and the wisdom that comes with experience all play an important role when it comes to leading a balanced lifestyle. But which of the three virtues is most important and why?

T

o discover more, I posed the question to our lunching ladies over a delicious meal at Chow, Maroochydore. The result was a lively and enlightening conversation, where we discovered more about each other and the incredible and varied life journeys we have all experienced.

PROFILE: WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU, HEALTH, WEALTH OR WISDOM? KRISTEN: Definitely health,

In between the many laughs and connections that were made, what became most apparent was the special bond we share as women and perhaps unsurprisingly, the unanimous conclusion that health, wealth and wisdom mean different things to different people, depending on their own life journey and what’s important to them. Joining me for lunch was Lorraine Martin, corporate sales manager with Mercedes-Benz, Maroochydore; Barbara Ann Butler, public affairs consultant; Katherine Allen, operations manager with Henzells Real Estate, Caloundra; Alexa Faros-Dowling, owner of Fernwood Gym, Morayfield and Kristen Shields, operations manager with Profile Magazine.

because without good health you can’t have anything else. As I get older it becomes even more important. When I was younger I thought I was invincible and now that I’m feeling my age a little bit more and I have two children, everything in my life is health-focused. It is my number one priority these days. LORRAINE: I think it’s important

to work out for yourself, what each of these things mean to you. I’ve always been healthy, so that is a real priority to me. And if I was to say wealth is important to me, I don’t necessarily mean money. Wealth profilemag.com.au

is more about experience. A while ago, I was working in a job I didn’t love, and I woke up one morning and thought this is not working. I moved to the Sunshine Coast, didn’t have a job and a week later I was driving a company Mercedes car to a corporate golf day and thought, ‘I don’t even know how I got here,’ but it was the wisdom of trusting my instinct. ALEXA: I’m in the

business of health, so it’s obviously number one for me. As a young child growing up it was always a priority, we always embraced being healthy. I see all my members the holiday issue 2017

it’s health, but not just your physical health. When I got cancer I was healthy. My food intake and exercise were always great. It’s also about having a healthy business, a healthy mindset and healthy relationships, that is what gives you wisdom. You also have to have a healthy relationship with yourself, which is often the hardest one because there is so much judgement. I believe what gave me cancer was stress, being too busy and not breathing deeply enough. Getting that breath deep down into our body is so important for good health. BARBARA: I think work/life

balance is a wonderful ideal but it’s not easy to achieve. Health is obviously critical, wealth is what many of us would like to have but we have to make do. I have just turned 70 and I’m coming to accept I’m old, even though I don’t want to believe it, but I still feel sexy! I’ve had an

interesting and somewhat unconventional life. Wisdom doesn’t descent on you like you put on a shawl, it comes from hard earned experience. I find the biggest driver in my life though, is relationships. KATHERINE: I think all three are

equally important and I look to my dad as an example. I hope I am blessed with his genes because he is healthy, wealthy and wise! He started his own business and built it up over the years so that all of his six children were financially independent for life. He doesn’t drink or smoke, he still runs every day and he is incredibly wise. Even though he drives me mad sometimes!

CHOW

They may be the new kid on the block, but Chow restaurant on Ocean Street, Maroochydore is causing quite a stir among the locals, for all the right reasons. Serving an array of delicious south-east Asian-inspired dishes in a relaxed, cool setting, owners Jeremy Kennedy and Jordan Lund, together with venue manager Luke O’Keefe have created a delectable menu that’s varied and exciting. Inside, the concrete floors, timber walls and ambient pendant lights create a hip, welcoming vibe, which lends itself perfectly to a long leisurely lunch with friends. Boasting an impressive, well-stocked bar, the lunching ladies couldn’t resist sampling one of the many delicious signature cocktails on offer. I can highly recommend the Lychee Ikimasu – the mix of lychee liqueur, Cointreau, fig liqueur, fresh lime, mint and aloe really hit the spot. If you are dining with a group, ordering several plates to share is the way to go. CHUNKY STICKY DATE PUDDING GRANOLA with banana nice cream BANANA NICE CREAM is my secret kitchen trick - due to its high pectin content.

Blend 4 ripe frozen bananas (peeled and roughly chopped) and purée until smooth.

RECIPE ANNA LISLE • GLUTEN FREE • DAIRY FREE • VEGETARIAN • VEGAN • REFINED SUGAR FREE • SERVES 4

GRANOLA

TOPPINGS

Begin this recipe the day before by placing the peeled bananas into a container or zip lock bag to freeze overnight. Preheat oven to 160°C and line a tray with baking (parchment) paper. In a large bowl combine all the dry ingredients; oats, cashews, macadamias, dates, coconut, cinnamon, mixed spice and salt. Heat maple syrup and coconut oil in a small saucepan over a gentle temperature. Once the coconut oil has melted, add vanilla and pour over the dry ingredients. Toss to combine. Spread mixture evenly onto the lined tray, and bake for 30 minutes, stirring once about halfway through. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely—do not stir at this stage. When ready to eat, make the banana nice cream. Divide nice cream between bowls and scatter with granola, fresh fruit and edible flowers (if using).

• 1 punnet fresh blueberries • 1 punnet strawberries, halved • 2 passionfruit, pulp scooped out • 2 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced • 1 mandarin, peeled into segments • edible flowers (optional)

NOTE: This makes about 600g of granola. A quick hint on the dates: if you’re using fresh dates, they’re easier to chop cold, so pop them in the refrigerator or freezer for 15 minutes before chopping.

• 200g gluten free rolled oats • 75g whole raw cashews • 75g raw macadamias, roughly chopped • 120g fresh (or dried) dates, pitted and roughly chopped • 40g shredded coconut • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ground mixed spice • pinch of sea salt • 3-4 tablespoons pure maple syrup • 100ml coconut (or olive) oil • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

SALTED CARAMEL MACADAMIA TART RECIPE THE MERRYMAKER SISTERS • SERVES 12 • PREP TIME 1 HR • FREEZER TIME 2 HRS

This tart will rock your world. It’s our all time favourite sweet treat recipe from our Get Merry cookbook! Oh yum. Oh so good. Oh salted caramel...

TOPPING • 1 cup macadamia nuts • 2 tbs maple syrup • pinch of salt

FILLING

BASE

• 100g pitted medjool dates • ½ cup coconut milk (canned) • ½ cup coconut oil • ¼ cup tahini • 1 tbs 100% maple syrup (optional) • 1 tsp 100% vanilla extract • pinch of salt

• 100g pitted medjool dates • 2 cups desiccated coconut • 1 cup macadamia nuts • ¼ cup coconut oil • 1 tsp 100% vanilla extract • pinch of salt

Start with the topping! Preheat oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Place the macadamia nuts onto the tray, drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle with salt. Place into the oven for 10 minutes or until just golden, allow to cool completely (don’t taste test them all!). Let’s get onto the tart! Line or grease a 24cm tart tin. Start with the base. Place the dates, coconut oil and vanilla into a blender or food processor, whiz until a smooth paste forms. Add the macadamias, coconut, salt and whiz again until just smooth. Press the base into the tart tin evenly. Don’t forget the sides! BONUS TART TIP: To make your base really strong, be sure to build up the base where the bottom and sides meet. Place into the freezer. Now onto the filling! Place all the ingredients into your blender (no need to rinse) and whiz until smooth. This will take around 5 minutes. Take the base out of the freezer and pour the filling into the base, shake carefully to even out. Evenly place cooled caramel macadamia nuts on top of the filling. Place into the freezer for 2 hours or until set. Once the tart is set, carefully lift out of the tin, slice and enjoy! MERRYMAKER TIP Be sure to freeze leftovers, because eating an entire salted caramel tart sounds like a good idea, but it isn’t (we promise, it isn’t). the holiday issue 2017

All those 30 degree green CHRISTMASES by the pool with lashings of seafood and ham are now CHALLENGED by smores and sleigh rides!”

WORDS JACINTA BLUNDELL PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

Everlasting fans of downhill, snowy escapades and, of course, the soothing après-ski that follows, my family and I fell for the beauty and exhilaration of winter travel long ago. From the adrenalin-packed days to snuggling up in front of a log fire with a local glass of red; if you haven’t yet dared to luxuriate in a winter escape, I may just change your mind.

Y

ou needn’t squeeze into a pair of rigid ski boots and hurl down a glistening trail for the perfect snowcation; winter journeys are as much about hot tubs, dreamy scenery, superb dining, fine wine and making snow men and angels – the champagne powder skiing and boarding is just a bonus! The lure of a white Christmas is undeniable. Once Sinatra or Bublé’s crooning has enchanted you along a twinkling village boardwalk decked in festive trim, or you’ve sipped Glühwein (mulled wine) at a Christmas market in Germany or Austria, it’s difficult to imagine December any other way. Aside from peak Christmas (mid December – mid January), winter travel is generally low season, and travelling on the cusp of premium Northern Hemisphere travel periods puts you in the thick of twinkling lights, blue bird days and snow ghosts, while offering great value and a few surprises. Magical creations such as Lake Louise’s Ice Castle or the Hotel de Glace in Quebec City are crafted in January; with famous ice festivals and winter carnivals erupting in February and beyond. With Japan ticking off the desires of deep powder, friendly people and unique cuisine, no wonder more and more resorts are catering for the Western market, and North American resorts are serving up legendary spring skiing during March/April, often aligning with Easter and school holiday dates. Next month, my husband Brad and I depart for an amazing destination in British Columbia, home to Canada’s highest five-star dining and lodging experience. When last run of the day is called and skiers return to the resort below, a gondola will whisk us to the summit (2300m) where a log chalet retreat for two awaits, complete with private chef and butler. Reminiscent of a James Bond film, the luxury lair has an eagle’s eye view of the greater Columbia Mountains and is guaranteed first tracks to over 2500 acres of powder. Any winter worshipper’s dream! Following Canada, it’s off to incredible Iceland for a research expedition for our upcoming Northern Lights Small Group Journey, in search of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), exploring the ice caves and thermal wonderlands of the Golden Circle and south coast, and floating in the famed Blue Lagoon. profilemag.com.au

WORDS INGRID NELSON PHOTOS KATIE TAKES A PICTURE

Sunshine Coast singer/songwriter Jason Daniels started making music at just four years of age and he hasn’t stopped since. The talented 21-year-old from Nambour recently cracked the top 10 on iTunes with his new EP and is fast becoming a name to watch.

“I

think I might have been only eight or 10 months old when Mum first noticed I was tapping along to music,” says Jason Daniels. “Music just really made sense in my mind. I started piano lessons when I was four, drums when I was six and then I picked up the guitar and started singing when I was about eight. It seemed to be about every two years that I would pick up a new instrument.” Growing up on a cattle farm in western New South Wales, Jason was home schooled during his primary years before landing a music scholarship at Blue Mountains Grammar School where he attended until Grade 11. “Being farmers, we weren’t super well off but my music opened doors for me and allowed me to go to a pretty cool school. But by the end of Year 10 I knew music was what I wanted to do with my life, so when the opportunity came up to apply to music college it was a no brainer and I jumped right on it,” he says. “It was kind of scary, being a 16-year-old kid at a music college. Creatives can be a bit out there, it was pretty eye opening but very inspiring at the same time.” Surrounded by a diverse range of music throughout his childhood, Jason says some of his fondest memories include singing along to the likes of The Beach Boys and Earth Wind and Fire.

Music just really MADE SENSE in my mind. I started piano lessons when I was four, drums when I was six and then I picked up the guitar and STARTED SINGING when I was about eight. It seemed to be about every two years that I would pick up a new instrument.” “I grew up listening to all those groovy bands,” says Jason. “My parents both love music, it was there when we were waking up, when we were going asleep and when we were in the car.” Naming Jason Mraz and John Mayer among his biggest influences, Jason describes his music as a mix of funk, reggae and easy listening. And when it comes to his favourite instrument, he’s just as comfortable on the piano as he is on the drums and guitar. “It really depends on my mood,” says Jason. “I love having a good hit on the drums, I also love being by myself on the piano, I find it’s a beautiful creative outlet and guitar and singing is great for gigs because it’s so involved and I can move around and really connect with the audience.” Passionate about the live music scene, and connecting people through music,

Jason was one of the performers at the Caloundra Music Festival 2017 and says it was one of the highlights of his career so far. “It had to be one of the most encouraging experiences I have had as a musician. It’s a real mix of local artists who are well known and local underdogs who are up and coming and it was such an honour to be there. I remember thinking, ‘How am I in the green room with Ronan Keating’? “I love connecting with a live audience. We played a couple of gigs on the weekend, one was an acoustic set in a teepee. Myself and my band thought we would have a jam by ourselves and then all of a sudden the whole place filled up and everyone was singing along to our songs, it was just so humbling.” Not only has Jason enjoyed success on the live circuit, his first album, When I’m Lost, recently debuted at number nine on the iTunes Australian music charts. “I almost fell off my chair, that doesn’t really happen, it was very surreal,” he says. “Bringing out my first album was really scary because as a musician nothing is ever finished in your own mind. I could have held onto the songs because I thought they weren’t perfect but at the end of the day, it’s better to get it out there so people can start coming on the journey with you and start putting those songs into their own world. “Since the album debuted, the amount of people who have gone out of their way to message me and repost stuff has been so encouraging and a bit overwhelming actually.” Refreshingly modest and down to earth, Jason openly admits that apart from talent

and sheer hard work, there is still an element of luck required to make it in the music industry. “I got to open for Russell Morris recently and we got chatting in the green room. He said to me, ‘It’s obvious you have the talent and you’ve put the time in with songwriting and performing, now all you need is an absolute truckload of luck,’ it’s how this industry works.” When he’s not performing or writing and recording new music, Jason shares his knowledge and passion with his music students at his Nambour studio and is looking forward to his first Australian tour in January. “I can’t wait, it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Watch this space.

LAST WORD THE

WITH PAUL TAYLOR When he’s not enjoying the beautiful Sunshine Coast beaches with his wife Gina, Paul Taylor is working on his old V8 car or cooking up a storm. The hilarious sports fanatic took time away from his post as Nine News’ Regional Queensland Sports presenter to give us the Last Word. I WAS BORN IN… the morning.

MY FAVOURITE SPORT IS… Gimme a break, I'm a sports journo! Despite being born in Brisbane, my first experience with organised sport was playing Aussie Rules as an eight-year-old in Victoria. I'm also a huge rugby league fan and am now lucky enough to work alongside The King Wally Lewis. If you asked me what sporting event I would want to attend, it'd be the Monaco F1 Grand Prix with all the trimmings. I LOOK UP TO… older people - and those taller than 180cm. MY FIRST JOB WAS… as an ice cream shop worker at the "brand new"

Kawana Shopping World (circa 1979). IF I COULD MEET ANYONE, ALIVE OR DEAD, IT WOULD BE… Gough Whitlam. Love him or loathe him (and I am firmly in the camp of the former), he made a significant contribution to our society. I'm also intrigued by his polarising nature. MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT WAS… as a 17-year-old novice driver, rear-ending two other cars while waving to a girl (who became my wife). MY HIDDEN TALENT IS… cooking. The cheaper the ingredients the more

enthusiastic I get. I enjoy buying "specials" at the shops and basing a meal off off that, that, rather rather thanthan following following a recipe. a recipe. THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY CAREER WAS… I object to the past tense used in this sentence! But, 19.3 years at my previous job without being sacked was pretty impressive. Calling a season of Cowboys (NRL) matches and another season of Taipans (NBL) matches was a thrill. MY NEXT HOLIDAY WILL BE TO… Italy. My wife Gina has a long held dream of cruising the Amalfi Coastline in a 1960s Mercedes Benz convertible, a la Grace Kelly. Who am I to stand in her way? MY FAVOURITE TYPE OF MUSIC IS… from story tellers - think Paul Kelly,

Bill Chambers, David Flower. 98
