THE PUNDITS are notorious for their prophecies of gloom and doom. Indeed there is death to think about (Being Mortal, see p.2), and if we aren’t sure how it happened we will need expert Forensics (p.3) to discover the truth. As if that wasn’t enough there is long term societal entropy to worry about, Political Order and Political Decay, (p.5) which is the second volume of Francis Fukuyama’s superlative magnum opus on the evolution and nature of politics. These are surely Testing times for everyone (p.21). And, the past was a better place wasn’t it? Trains were cleaner, more comfortable and less crowded (check in Belles and Whistles, p.7), and England’s counties were each more distinctive and less homogeneous (if in doubt read the wry, witty Engel’s England, p.13). But, Life Goes On (p.11). Mustn’t grumble, it could be so much worse. There remain plenty of opportunities for Adventures in Stationery (p.14) and we can scare ourselves for pure pleasure with Susan Hill’s perfect ghost story Printer’s Devil Court (p.10). Or we can stretch our brains with the New Scientist (p.8) or Professor Stewart’s Casebook of Mathematical Mysteries (p.9). If all that fails, we can watch a good film (p.15), or sing a rousing Christmas Carol which always lifts the spirits (p.17) particularly if washed down with alcohol (see p.20). In fact, as the books in this catalogue show, there is plenty to look forward to. Enjoy.

Being Mortal Medicine and what Matters in the End Part two of the most important book since The End of History In Being Mortal, Gawande draws on his experiences as a surgeon, as he confronts the realities of aging and dying in his patients and his family, as well as the limits of what he can do. He explores questions that range from the curious to the profound: Did human beings really commit senecide, the sacrifice of the elderly? Why do the aged so dread nursing homes and hospitals? How should someone give another person the news that they will die?

Political Order and Political Decay From the French Revolution to the Present Part two of his most important work since The End of History In The Origins of Political Order, Francis Fukuyama took us from the dawn of mankind to the French and American Revolutions. Here, he picks up the thread again in the second instalment of his definitive account of mankind's emergence as a political animal. This is the story of how state, law and democracy developed after these cataclysmic events, how the modern landscape – with its uneasy tension between dictatorships and liberal democracies – evolved and, finally, how in the United States and other developed democracies, unmistakable signs of decay have emerged. If we want to understand the political systems that dominate and order our lives, we must first consider their origins – in our own recent past as well as in the earliest systems of human government. Pinkoes and Traitors The BBC and the Nation, 1974–1987
During the Margaret Thatcher years, Britain experienced mass unemployment, trade union strikes, bloody war in Northern Ireland and the Falklands, and an existential threat to its public service broadcaster, the BBC. Pounded by a coherent free market argument, the BBC had to justify its right to the licence fee and its independent place in the ‘unwritten’ British constitution. It did so by producing memorable programmes for the whole British public (not just for the groups that advertisers liked), bolstered by a surprising amount of help from elements of the Conservative government (though not from Thatcher). Drawing on unseen state and BBC papers and a compelling range of interviewees, Jean Seaton examines the turbulent controversies (stirred up by programmes such as Maggie's Militant Tendency) and the magnificent triumphs (such as Life on Earth and Morecambe and Wise) of an institution that Britain loved and hated, and in many ways is still defined by. £30.00 384pp Royal hardback with illustrations ISBN: 978 1 84668 474 6 e-ISBN: 978 1 84765 916 3 History / Media November 2014 World Tr

Belles and Whistles Five Journeys Through Time on Britain’s Trains The bestselling author of Underground, Overground recaptures the lost age of the railways Once upon a time, you could dine on kippers and champagne aboard the Brighton Belle; smoke a post-prandial cigar as the Golden Arrow arrived in Paris, or be shaved by the Flying Scotsman's onboard barber. Everyone from schoolboys to socialites aspired to ride aboard these glamorous 'named trains'. In Belles and Whistles, Andrew Martin travels on the nearest modern-day equivalents of five famous trains, contrasting the golden age with the starker modern reality and discovering what became of porters, dining cars, mellow lighting – and even trunk murders. Together, Martin's five journeys make up an entertaining and idiosyncratic history of Britain's railways, combining reportage from the present and romantic evocations of the past.
Andrew Martin is a journalist and author. His previous book for Profile, Underground, Overground, a history of the London Underground was highly praised, the Sunday Telegraph calling it ‘an elegantly written, and witty history’. He has written for most British newspapers. His ‘Jim Stringer’ series of railway novels are published by Faber.

What the...? 124 surprising answers to 125 of science’s most intriguing questions All science begins with questions. How does that happen? What am I seeing here? Why do these birds do that? When will we have proof for this? And often the simplest questions can lead to amazing insights into our universe, our world and ourselves. Here are 125 intriguing questions and 124 answers* from all the sciences, including medicine, astronomy and psychology as well as physics, chemistry and biology. As you would expect from the New Scientist, this is top-flight science at its most head-scratching, unpredictable and plain weird. Many of the answers seem obvious when one reads them; others are more surprising; some are downright startling (can there really be that much flora in our guts?); and others are still controversial (yes, scientists get into furious arguments sometimes).

‘This document is strictly private. All that is written herein being the exact thoughts, feelings, deeds and words of Miss JL Pratt and not to be read thereby by anyone whatsoever until after the said Miss JLP’s death, be she married or single at the date of that event.’ (1925) For more than half of the twentieth century, an uncelebrated but brilliant writer called Jean Lucey Pratt recorded, in her diaries and her contributions to the Mass Observation project, the life of a thoroughly modern woman coming to terms with a rapidly changing world. An independent thinker, voracious reader, inveterate smoker and devoted cat owner, she chronicles her struggles with work – from architectural student to bookshop owner – male friends, girlfriends, and a variety of eccentric lodgers. We observe her triumphs and anxieties, and through her eyes we obtain a moving and entertaining insight into British life during the Second World War and its aftermath.

Engel’s England One man, one capital and thirty-nine counties An alternative (and very funny) guidebook to every side of England England, says Matthew Engel, is the most complicated place in the world. And, as he travels through each of the historic English counties, he discovers that's just the beginning. Every county is fascinating, the product of a millennium or more of history: a unique slice of a nation that has not quite lost its ancient diversity. He finds the well-dressers of Derbyshire and the pyromaniacs of Sussex; the Hindus and huntsmen of Leicestershire; the goddessworshippers of Somerset. He tracks down the real Lancashire, hedonistic Essex, and the most mysterious house in Middlesex. In Durham he goes straight from choral evensong to the dog track. As he seeks out the essence of each county – Engel always finds the unexpected. Engel’s England is a totally original look at an often unknown country: quirky, sometimes poignant and often extremely funny.
Matthew Engel has been a Financial Times columnist since 2004, and previously spent twenty-five years at the Guardian, covering everything from terrorism to tiddlywinks. He edited Wisden Cricketers' Almanack for twelve years. His last book was Eleven Minutes Late: A Train Journey to the Soul of Britain.

How to Watch a Movie An insightful guide for all film-lovers from ‘the greatest living film historian’
You've been watching movies for most of your life. But often you're not quite sure what you think, or why. Should you see a movie in company or alone? How many times can you see it? What's the difference between watching and seeing? What is a shot, and what is a cut? Are we watching people, characters or actors – or is it all of them at the same time? Now David Thomson has written a primer with the answers. He refers to hundreds of films, and many of them are models for moviegoing – Rear Window, Citizen Kane, Rebel Without a Cause, Blow Up, Casino. How to Watch a Movie is deeply informed and often comic and, with asides on subjects from Velazquez's Las Meninas to taking a photograph of someone you love, it is a reminder that seeing isn't just for the dark – it is our essential link with life.
David Thomson ‘without doubt, the greatest living film historian’ (L. A. Times), is the author of the seminal New Biographical Dictionary of Film, now in its 5th edition, Have You Seen ..? and The Big Screen. Born in London, Thomson now lives in San Francisco.

Christmas Carols A Celebration Here’s something to set you singing this Christmas A fittingly joyous account of one of our bestloved musical traditions, Christmas Carols reveals the history behind our favourites along with some rarer gems. Andrew Gant tells the story of some twenty carols, each accompanied by lyrics and music and, in the process, unravels a captivating tale of saints, pagans, parsons, poets and musicians. Among many other things we discover that the many tunes for ‘While Shepherds watched’ include ‘On Ilkley Moor b’ah tat’, and how Ralph Vaughan Williams bolted the tune of an English folk song about a dead ox to a poem by an American pilgrim to make ‘O little town of Bethlehem’. The history of the Christmas carol is close to the story of Christmas itself: beginning in Ancient Rome, developed through medieval traditions, and perfected during the last two centuries, carols illuminate our shared culture and history across millennia. Christmas Carols: A celebration brims with expert knowledge, anecdote and Christmas spirit.
Andrew Gant is a composer, choirmaster, church musician, university teacher and writer. MARTIN, GOLDSTEIN AND CIALDINI
the small BIG The Small Changes that can make a Big Difference when Persuading Others The follow-up to the bestselling sensation Yes! At some point today you will have to influence or persuade someone – perhaps ask a colleague a favour, negotiate with a contractor or get your spouse to put out the recycling. In the small BIG, three heavyweights from the world of persuasion science and practice – Steve Martin, Noah Goldstein and Robert Cialdini – describe how, in today’s information-overloaded world, it is now the smallest changes that lead to the biggest differences in results. Offering deceptively simple suggestions and explaining the extensive scientific research behind them, the small BIG presents over fifty small changes – from the little adjustments that make meetings more effective to the costless alteration to correspondence that saved a government millions. the small BIG is full of surprising, powerful – and above all, tiny – changes that could mean the difference between failure and success.

The Economist Guide to Country Risk Country Risk explains the things that can go wrong when business is conducted across borders. Whether it’s a multinational with factories worldwide, or small firm looking to expand sales abroad or work with a foreign supplier, all companies must understand the dangers. But when the debt crisis struck, the flaws in the currency brought the EU close to breaking point after decades of postwar integration. Deep fault-lines have opened up, between north and south, between European institutions and nation-states, and between rulers and ruled, raising profound questions about Europe's democratic deficit. Belief in European institutions and national governments alike is waning, while radicals of both the left and the right are gaining power and influence. If the euro is to survive and thrive, leaders will have to confront some difficult questions: How much national sovereignty are they willing to give up? How much of the debt burden and banking risk will they share? And what role will the EU and euro play in the wider world? John Peet is Europe editor and a former Brussels correspondent of The Economist. He was previously Washington correspondent and Business Affairs editor. Anton La Guardia is Brussels correspondent of The Economist, and writes its ‘Charlemagne’ column. He was previously foreign correspondent in the Middle East and Africa, and is the author of Holy Land, Unholy War: Israelis and Palestinians.
