The Sindh government had been working to secure a pardon for Shahrukh Jatoi, the convicted murderer of Shahzaib Khan, and had sent a pardon summary to the Presidency, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday. “An appeal to pardon Jatoi was sent to the Aiwan-e-Sadr directly instead of the Interior Ministry,” the TV channel said, adding the Presidency forwarded the appeal to the Interior Ministry. pag e 04

Zimbabwe allowed Pakistan to claw back into the match in the third session of the second Test in Harare after keeping the bowlers at bay for two-thirds of the day. The hosts had survived a treacherous morning session with only the loss of their openers before scoring 100 for 1 in a fruitful afternoon session, but they lost four wickets to the old ball and one to the second new ball to find them in a familiar position. pag e 17

QUETTA: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Quetta has once again issued production orders for former President Pervez Musharraf in the Nawab Akbar Bugti assassination case. The court has also issued arrest warrants of former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, former governor Owais Ahmad Ghani and Abdul Samad Lasi, former Dera Bugti DCO. ATC Judge Tariq Anwar Kansi took up the case for hearing on Tuesday, inquiring from investigation team about progress in the case. The counsel for Pervez Musharraf requested the court to exempt his client from attendance in the court. The court, while repeating its first order, again ordered that Musharraf and other accused should be produced before it at all costs. The court was told by the investigation team that accused Shaukat Aziz and Owais Ahmad Ghani named in this case were living abroad. The court ordered that they be brought back to Pakistan after fulfilling all legal formalities. The hearing of the case was adjourned until September 30. Talking to reporters after the hearing, Sohail Rajput, counsel for Jamil Akbar Bugti, said request made by counsel for Musharraf regarding exemption from attendance of court in respect of his client was a bid to delay proceedings, while the Balochistan High Court had already dismissed applications in this regard. altaf demands new provinces KARACHI STAFF REPORT
New provinces should be created to ensure equitable distribution of the country’s resources, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain said on Tuesday. Addressing the MQM Rabita Committee, Altaf said creation of new provinces was essential to do away with the sense of inferiority among various communities in Pakistan. Asserting that administrative units needed to be created at a war footing, the MQM chief said all parties conferences should also be called to decide on such matters, adding that if new provinces were formed, t h e y would add to the wellbeing of the
altaf’s demand for new provinces draws flak MONITORING DESK Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain’s demand of creation of new provinces has been severely criticised by political leaders. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon said the province is already facing a volatile law and order situation and it would be better to keep the focus directed to this issue. However, he added that the PPP would have no objection over Altaf’s demand if he wants more provinces carved out from the other federating units other than Sindh. Ayaz Latif Palijo, chief of Awami Tehreek, said the people of Sindh considered Altaf Hussain’s demand as an attack on themselves and they would never allow the division of Sindh at any cost.

resolve differences between various communities it was essential that “realistic” polices were developed and implemented. Shortly after the address, MQM leader Farooq Sattar said in order to resolve the challenges facing the country, “there’s no harm in creating more administrative units and no harm in creating more provinces”. He said the MQM chief had asked for one more APC to be called because “one conference was not enough”. Sattar said the next APC should focus on the day-to-day problems faced by the citizens such as an increase in prices and unemployment.

Memogate: Nawaz govt supports Zardari in SC ISLAMABAD STAFF REPORT
Responding to the Supreme Court with reference to the Memogate scandal on Tuesday, the current government defended former president Asif Ali Zardari and his decision to convene a high level meeting to probe former ambassador of Pakistan to the US, Hussain Haqqani. The questioning at the time was carried out in the presence of the Chief of Army Staff and Director General Inter Services Intelligence. Haqqani was questioned for allegedly sending a memo to a top American military official looking to avoid a military coup following the Abbottabad incident in which Osama bin Laden was gunned down. Pakistani American businessperson Mansoor Ijaz had alleged that Haqqani was sending a memo against Pakistan army generals with the consent of the former president. One of the petitioners in the current case, Shahid Orakzai had filed an application asking that Zardari’s name be put on the Exit Control List (ECL) so that the former president could not escape from investigations related to the Abbottabad incident. The federal government in the reply it submitted through the law division said that the petition was misconceived and “completely against realities”. The government requested that the application be dismissed. A two-judge bench of the court is scheduled to take this case next week.

HyBER Pakhtunkhwa (kP) Chief Minister (CM) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary-General Pervez khattak has brokered a reconciliation between PTI Chairman Imran khan and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman. khan and Fazl shook hands during the All Parties Conference (APC) on Monday and exchanged pleasantries. Both politicians had locked horns since last year and were claiming to win majority votes in kP. Both leaders have used derogatory language against each other. Fazl had accused khan of being a Jewish agent during the by-election campaign in kP. khan responded in the same language, stating that in presence of Fazl, whom he called “Mullah Diesel”, there was no reason for the Jews to install an agent in Pakistan as
Taliban mulling 10-point demand agenda for talks
Fazl was there to look after their interests. khan had also served a defamation notice on Fazl, telling him to offer a public apology for labeling him as a Jewish agent, failing which a civil suit would be filed in court under defamation law seeking damages amounting to billions of rupees. A source privy to the recent developments told Pakistan Today that on the sidelines of the recently held All Parties Conference (APC), khattak met Fazl and expressed remorse over the rift between the two leaders, saying it may reflect badly on the peace initiative with the Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP). According to the source, khattak told Fazl that khan is a sincere but simple politician whose naïve political aides had created misunderstandings between him and the JUI-F leader. khattak told Fazl that he had urged khan to reconcile with the JUI-F chairman as any tussle between the two pro-peace leaders could scuttle the peace process and the people and government of kP would have to face a Taliban backlash in case the two leaders remained at loggerheads. According to the source, khattak told Fazl that he had convinced khan that the JUI-F
chairman had immense influence within the Taliban circles, adding that he himself did not agree to khan’s doctrine on the Taliban and had asked him not to press his demand to use force against militants involved in sectarian violence. The kP CM told Fazl that khan was ill-advised by some “Lahore-based intellectuals” who wanted khan to adopt a strong stance against outfits like the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and other militants allegedly involved in sectarian violence. khattak said he convinced khan that, as kP’s ruling party, the PTI should not get involved in controversies due to which it may have to face more violence and hatred and also may have to lose the government and public backing. khattak sought Imran’s permission to tackle the
affairs of kP according to the local traditions of the province as Lahori intellectuals could not comprehend the political dynamics of kP and the country’s tribal areas. khattak told Imran not to get involved in the peace initiative with the Taliban and to allow the kP government to deal with the issue, adding that as Fazl was leading the government’s peace initiative, he might ignite the Taliban’s anger towards the kP government if khan kept infuriating him. It was learnt that khan agreed to khattak’s viewpoint and allowed him to play peacemaker between him and Fazl. khan also met Fazl during the APC and congratulated him on his speech. Fazl reciprocated the gesture, saying khan’s arguments were valid and that the PTI chairman might provide ample help in the peace talks. When contacted, JUI-F Spokesman Jan Ali Achakzai confirmed the easing out of tensions between the two parties, adding that common friends had contacted both parties for reconciliation. “We have told the negotiators that the JUI-F will only reciprocate the efforts if the PTI withdraws the defamation notice sent to Fazl,” he said adding that once the notice is withdrawn, the JUIJan ali achakzai F will publicly adopt a stance on JUI-F SPOKESPERSON the matter.

govT giveN MANdATe To eSTAbliSh wriT: ShAh Opposition leader says it is not easy to negotiate with Pakistani Taliban
ISLAMABAD: Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly on Tuesday said the opposition has given mandate to the government for talks with the militants, now it is up to government to establish its writ. Talking to reporters at the Parliament House, Khursheed Shah said that the opposition had given mandate to the government for negotiations with the Taliban and now it was the latter’s responsibility to establish its writ. He said that it is not easy to negotiate with the Pakistani Taliban. He reiterated the opposition’s commitment not to create hurdles for the government when it comes to talk with the Taliban. Expressing his opinion, Shah said that Pakistan-India relations should be normalised and both countries should improve visa procedure to help people move into each other’s countries freely. To a question, the PPP leader said he believed that the briefing given by the military authorities in the All Parties Conference was factual and based on truth. Shah added all participants in the APC were on the same page. About talks with the Taliban, he said that it was easy to negotiate with the Afghan Taliban as compared to the Pakistani Taliban. He added that the opposition had given mandate to the government to start talks with the Taliban, adding that writ of the government should not be restricted to the Taliban, but to Quetta, Karachi and against sectarianism. He said the nurseries for the terrorism would expand if not eradicated now. To another question, Shah said that it’s the 13th time the talks with the Taliban have been initiated but they did not bear fruit. Over the appointment of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, Shah suggested that the induction should be completed by September 15 or 16. AnWER ABBAS

Sindh govt appealed to presidency for Jatoi’s pardon FATHER DENIES PARDONING SHAHZAIB’S MURDERERS FOR MONEY MONITORING DESK
T
HE Sindh government had been working to secure a pardon for Shahrukh Jatoi, the convicted murderer of Shahzaib khan, and had sent a pardon summary to the Presidency, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday. “An appeal to pardon Jatoi was sent to the Aiwan-e-Sadr directly instead of the In-
terior Ministry,” the TV channel said, adding that the Presidency forwarded the appeal to the Interior Ministry during the tenure of former president Asif Ali Zardari. Upon the receipt of the summary, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali khan raised several objections on the attached affidavits. The Sindh government had tried to pressurise the Interior Ministry to approve the summary as it wanted Shahrukh’s death sentence to be pardoned, the channel reported. Shahrukh Jatoi, Nawab Siraj Talpur, Nawab Sajjad Talpur and Ghulam Murtaza Lashari had earlier been handed down the death sentence and life imprisonment for Shahzaib’s murder, in a case that had
gripped the nation’s attention for its significance as a test case for delivering justice amidst the travesties of class difference. Meanwhile, Shahzaib’s father Aurangzaib khan has denied pardoning the murderers in return for Rs 350 million. “I cannot even think of agreeing to a deal with anyone. I have not agreed to a pardon under duress, but there are complications.” He did not indicate what the “complications” were. “I went to the court all alone for nine months. The case was nowhere near the finish lane. I have just reached a point where I want to leave everything to God,” said Aurangzaib. He claimed that Shahrukh’s
father Sikandar Jatoi had visited his house six times to ask for a pardon. Asserting that he had not pardoned the culprit to harm anyone, Aurangzaib said, ”Ibrahim Jatoi who is also an MNA of the National People’s Party (NPP) has guaranteed no one will harm the witnesses.” Responding to a query about the family leaving for Australia, he said, “We had applied for visas when everyone had suggested that we leave the country out of concern for our safety”. He said the visas had not arrived as part of any deal. Aurangzeb said, “I’m not going anywhere. Why would I leave my country? I will make sure that the witnesses of the
case are safe.” “I respect everyone’s views but I did what I had to keeping in mind everyone’s interests,” he said, adding that Shahzaib’s friends were skipping their classes to devote their attention to a case that would have taken several months to resolve.

talks with taliban apc’s unanimous decision: rashid SAYS GOVERNMENT WILL WELCOME IF IMRAN KHAN OFFERS HIMSELF FOR TALKS WITH THE TALIBAN ISLAMABAD inP
Federal Minister for Information Senator Pervez Rashid has said that holding talks with the Taliban is a unanimous decision of all the participants of the All Parties Conference (APC) and no one will be allowed to sabotage the dialogue process. Talking to newsmen at the Parlia-
ment House on Tuesday, Pervez Rashid said talks would be used as a measure to eliminate terrorism and would be held with all groups. He said the army was a part of the government and would implement its policies. “We are still suffering from past differences between the civil and the military leadership.” He said talks with the Taliban would be initiated on the basis of confidence building measures and other groups such as jirgas would also be included in the process. “The talks are not being held for the PML-N but for national interest”, he noted. Pervez Rashid expressed his satisfaction over the positive response of the Opposition to the All Parties Conference. He highly
praised the response of the Taliban leadership and welcomed the outcome of the conference. To a question regarding objection of the Afghan government against the release of Taliban leaders, he said the release means setting a prisoner free and not handing over detainees to the other country. To another question, he said no tax had been imposed on the condition of IMF, adding that the government was not levying tax on gas consumers. Replying to another query, he said the government would welcome if PTI chairman Imran khan offered himself for talks with the Taliban. Responding to yet another question regarding written or oral agreement on drone attacks in Pakistan, Rashid said he never saw any such agreement.

KABUL: Two roadside bombs killed 11 people in Afghanistan on Tuesday, including passengers on a bus that took a detour to avoid a bomb-laden road, officials said. Roadside bombs are a major threat to civilians in this country, where Taliban insurgents have escalated their activities as US-led foreign forces withdraw. A bus traveling to Kabul from southern Helmand province had to take a desert path because the road it would have normally used was closed to allow NATO troops to defuse a roadside bomb. Instead, the bus hit another such explosive along its detour in Muqur district of Ghazni province, said Assadullah Ensafi, the provincial deputy police chief. The seven dead included three children, while 17 people were wounded in the explosion, he said. Separately, in Helmand’s Musa Khela district, a car hit a roadside bomb, killing one woman and three men, said Ummar Zawaq, spokesman for the provincial governor. Eight people were hurt, including three children, he said. Also Tuesday, a suicide car bomb went off in front of an Afghan National Army security post in Logar province’s Khushi district. AGEnCiES
RINCETON University has been named as the best college in the United States by US News & World Report, followed by Harvard University and Yale University. The magazine’s annual list, published Tuesday, is based on selectivity, retention of students and graduation rates. “The ivy-covered campus of Princeton University, a private institution, is located in the quiet town of Princeton, N.J.,” according to the publication’s national rankings. “Princeton was the first university to offer a ‘no loan’ policy to financially needy students, giving grants instead of loans to accepted students who need help paying tuition.” Columbia University grabbed the fourth spot, with Stanford University and the University of Chicago tying for fifth. A three-way tie for No. 7 gave Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania spots on the list. California Institute of Technology and Dartmouth College tied for the 10th spot. nEWS dESK

A key US vote on authorizing the use of military force in Syria was delayed by the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday. Earlier in the day, the top ally to President Barack Obama in Congress had scheduled the test vote for Wednesday but then backtracked to let the US leader sell his plan on strikes against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “I want to make sure the president (makes) his case to the Senate and the American people before voting on this matter,” Reid said, according to reports from AFP news agency. “I don’t think we need to see how fast we can do this. We have to see how well we can do this.” Obama is to meet with Democratic and Republican senators on Tuesday and gives a televised address to the nation that night. Russia, which has blocked US and British efforts to gain a United Nations resolution approving international action against Syria, appeared to open a path toward a solution Monday when it suggested a plan for Damascus to hand over its chemical weapons. Obama said on Monday that the Russian plan was “potentially positive” and pledged to take it seriously. Obama warned however against any stalling tactics from Syria, and said the fact there was any talk of a plan to forestall US air strikes was only down to his administration’s threats of military action, AFP reported, quoting Obama’s interview on NBC. “I think you have to take it with a grain of salt initially,” he told “NBC Nightly News” in an interview. “This represents a potentially positive development,” he said, adding that Secretary of State John kerry would explore with Russia how serious the offer is. Obama was speaking in one of six television inter-
views he gave on Monday to make his case that Congress should grant him authority to take action against Syria in response to an alleged Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack that killed more than 1,400 people. kerry suggested earlier Monday that Syria could avoid a potential US air attack by putting its chemical weapons under international control. Syria’s ally Russia quickly took the idea to Syria’s foreign minister, who said Damascus welcomes the proposal. The State Department later said kerry had been making a rhetorical argument about the impossibility of Assad turning over chemical weapons, which Assad denies his forces used in the Aug. 21 poison gas attack, according to Reuters.
i think it’s fair to say that i haven’t decided on a next step if congress turns its back...
Obama conceded that he might lose his fight for congressional support of a military strike against Syria, and declined to say what he would do if lawmakers reject his call to back retaliation for a chemical weapons attack last month. “I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t decided” on a next step if Congress turns its back, the president said in an NBC interview, one of six he granted during the day as part of a furious lobbying campaign aimed at winning support from dubious lawmakers as well as a war-weary public.
two cops among 12 killed in karachi KARACHI: Death toll in the violencestricken city rose to 12 after five more people, including two cops, a father and son, were shot dead, a private TV channel reported. Despite ongoing target operation by the Rangers and police, the target killers are still killing people and terrorizing them with impunity. A father and his son were the latest victims of terrorists’ firing in North Nazimabad’s UP Mor, where unidentified terrorists riding a motorcycle opened fire on their rickshaw. Another person was killed by motorcycle-riding culprits in Gol Market of North Nazimabad. The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Raza. He was the Noor-ulIman Mosque chairman. Another incident of firing took place near Landikotal Chowrangi in Block-H of North
Nazimabad, where two cops were killed when the vehicle of Hyderi Police Station came under attack. Bodies of all victims have been moved to Abbassi Shaheed Hospital. delAy iN CApiTAl’S New AirporT CoNSTruCTioN To rAiSe CoST To rS 100b ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday adjourned hearing in the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) case regarding the delay in the construction of New Islamabad International Airport. The case was heard by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, Justice Jawad S khawaja and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed. During the course of proceedings, counsels for different construction companies involved in the construction of the airport appeared before the court and submitted their replies. Most of the counsels for the companies were of the view that the delay in the construction of new airport was not due to them. Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad yousaf, senior officials of the ministry, Saudi Embassy, PIA and Civil Aviation Authority were also present on the occasion. Addressing the pilgrims, yousaf said the ministry has made a special helpline (0800-77000; 0800-1166622) operational to facilitate the intending pilgrims. A total of 143,368 Pakistani pilgrims would go to Saudi Arabia for performing the sacred religious ceremony through 288 Haj flights. Due to ongoing construction of extension of khana-e-kaaba this year, the Saudi government has reduced Haj quota by 20 percent, he said. Consequently 46,000 pilgrims would not perform the sacred religious obligations. The last Hajj flight would go to Saudi Arabia on October 9. The post-Haj flights operation would commence from October 19 and conclude on November 18. AJORITy of marriage bureaus in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi reportedly use unfair tactics to extract maximum amount from the citizens, who are having problems in finding suitable matches for their children due to financial and social constraints. Citizens demanded of the government to take a stern action against such marriage bureaus which are cheating people in order to earn money. Ayesha Qasim, mother of a girl while commenting on this issue said, people are cheated in the name of social services and in getting a legitimate reference but these marriage bureaus only work to make
money. “I paid a lot of money to the so called marriage bureaus, but till today, never got any response from them. These bureaus would always tell you that these matters take time,” she added. Another citizen, Asim Qureshi said that these bureaus approach their customers with their attractively worded and well phrased ads in different newspapers. They ask to fill out registration forms, take a large amount f money and never send any one. They don’t even bother to pick up your phone when you call them after paying money. The so called marriage bureaus, operating in Islamabad, charge around Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 for local matches, Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for inter-city matches and Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 for the matches of overseas Pakistanis. “Mostly, either middle class or overseas Pakistanis contact marriage bureaus. These ingenious matchmakers
exploit such people to the hilt,” lamented a victim of a matchmaker. “I submitted Rs 5,000 registration fee with a marriage bureau and they promised to find an excellent match for my daughter. After taking the money, they even refused to recognize me. That’s quite unfair,” Mrs Mukhtar alleged. The owner claimed that fees was nonrefundable and it costs them a lot to find a match, she said. “Does it really cost Rs 10,000 or plus to make some telephonic calls? We all know local call rates very
well.” A matchmaker said that she only charges money by looking at the financial status of her customers. She further said that people and boys come to them asking for girls who look like Hollywood stars and models. These bureaus are being owned and run by sole owners, without any government registration.

According to a research suicide rates are 60 percent higher than the official rate

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has challenged the law to hold local bodies (LB) elections on non-party basis in the Lahore High Court (LHC). Punjab PTI President Ijaz Chaudhry argued in petition that the Punjab Assembly has passed the law, which is against the constitution because the latter does not hold any such concept. The petitioner said many of provisions of new law were unconstitutional which have been introduced only to make the LB system ineffective. In the petition it has been requested that such provisions in new LB law should be declared null and orders be issued to conduct polls on party basis. STAFF REPORT

EITERATING his resolve to introduce a uniformed education policy in khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI Chairman Imran khan on Tuesday said education and health sectors topped the agenda of the kP government, which already had initiated reforms to improve literacy rate and reduce school drop-out ratio. Addressing a function in connection with the Children’s Enrolment Campaign at Govt High School No 1 Peshawar Cantonment, Imran said the introduction of a uniformed and single syllabus was a must in order to attain glory among the comity of nations. Without education, the dream of success could not be materialized, he added. He said the Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) government had already
started reforms in the education sector to provide uniformed education to all irrespective of caste and creed. He said in civilised countries, education system was the same for the poor and the rich. The PTI would try to end the class-based system of education, he added. Imran said he would persuade overseas Pakistanis to help revamp the education sector in kP. He said kP was badly affected by militancy and terrorism and his party was endeavouring to bring peace there, which would help bring foreign investments in social sector. Imran said the kP government had declared educational emergency in the
province and record allocation had been made in the budget to bring reforms. He said efforts were being made to bring maximum children to school and discourage school dropout ratio. He claimed that the maximum issues raised by his party at the All Parties Conference had been accommodated in the final communique. Dialogue was the only option to tackle militancy and it would help restore peace in the country, he added. kP CM Pervez khattak, Education Minister Muhammad Atif, Health Minister Shaukat yousafzai, PTI leaders, children and parents attended the function. On the occasion, dozens of children were enrolled.
bearing brunt of defeat in polls! LAHORE nAdEEm SyEd
While sweeping changes are on the cards in PPP-P (Parliamentary), the top officebearers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are safe and secure. As such the party officials have denied reports that Sardar Latif khosa, who is general secretary of PPP (not PPP-P) is being replaced in the reorganisational move that the outgoing president, Zardari, had promised on September 8 last during his visit to the city to mark the end of his tenure as president. Sources in the party said that reason for
wholesale shakeup in the PPP-P was simple and straight forward: former president Zardari believed it was PPP-P’s leadership that was responsible for the party’s electoral debacle in the last general elections. Hence, it was the PPP-P which had to bear the brunt of defeat, the president had made it clear in the party meetings recently. Following the party’s rout in the Punjab and elsewhere in the country, the PPP-P’s top leadership has already tendered their resignations to Zardari or Bilawal Bhutoo one after the other. Prominent among them are Raja Pervez Ashraf, yousuf Raza Gilani, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Manzoor Wattoo and others.

The sources said that Zardari would bring in new faces on the slots which fell vacant besides other top offices on central and provincial levels while the top office-bearers of PPP would not be touched. The sources also discredited the reports of Latif khosa’s sacking as general secretary of the PPP-P. It is to be noted that under the political compulsion arising out of some changes in law by the then president Musharraf, the PPP, as a political party, is not registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan. Instead, it has been registered with the name of PPP-P with Amin Fahim as its president and Bilawal patron-in-chief. Meanwhile, Aitzaz Ahsan is in the limelight in the PPP and is expected to get a lead role in the party reorganisation. Reports are there that he may get the top office of general secretary as a part of efforts to revive the party. It is also in the air that Manzoor Wattoo is being replaced with some jiala or original PPP leader. Wattoo may get an advisory role in the reshuffle.

The ppp-pMl-N bonhomie
pak-india: Misplaced focus Needless belligerence compounding economic strife
How long it lasts remains to be seen
T
HE government’s response to Shahid Orakai’s petition was in line with the general expectations. It maintained that the petitioner’s rights were not violated by the US Seals’ Abbottabad operation. Further, if the court wanted to probe into the matter, the Establishment Division and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were the relevant bodies as the law ministry had not been made a party on the issue. In other words, so far as the government was concerned Zardari was free to go out of the country, if he so desired. Zardari, however, is in no hurry to leave the scene. He has already announced that while he is not interested in running for the office of the PM, he would concentrate on reorganising the PPP. As Farhaullah Babar put it, Zardari would relocate to Lahore “to start yet another chapter in political struggle.” This is going to be an altogether different sort of political struggle though. Zardari has ruled out street agitation as it could endanger democracy, which, he thinks, has to be jealously preserved. His party would play the role of a responsible opposition, criticising the government’s wrong policies inside the parliament but extending support to it as it addresses important national issues. Zardari has opposed the recourse to violence or public protests as these could strengthen forces opposed to democracy. The PPP would extend support to the government over the next five years. This is a realistic policy as after the electoral debacle the PPP needs time to reorganise and restructure as well as launch its younger leadership. The policy suits the PML-N which needs a hassle-free tenure to be able to fulfil its electoral promises – like ending power shortages, setting the economy on an even keel and the improving law and order situation without which business and industry cannot flourish. Nawaz therefore attended the dinner hosted by Zardari while he invited the latter on a farewell luncheon where both leaders lavished praise on each other, much to the embarrassment of some PML leaders who had crossed all the red lines to demolish and demonise Zardari. At Mamnoon Hussain’s oath-taking ceremony, Zardari shared the stage with the new president and prime minister, and had a 30-minute long powwow with both after the function. This reminds one of the bonhomie during the short lived PPP-PML-N alliance in 2008. How long the present chapter lasts remains to be seen.
death by cylinder Prevention is the key
W
ITHOUT a doubt Pakistan’s roads are the world’s most dangerous place for the commuters of public transport. Travel in rickety old vehicles of unknown vintage, which are usually driven with a wild abandon, has unfortunately frequently turned into yet another sudden and unnatural mode of transportation to the hereafter. The main culprit in the recent traffic fatalities is the gas cylinder, fitted in substandard and shoddy manner, illegally packed three or four together in a single vehicle for maximum gain and used well beyond its shelf life by illiterate drivers or owners. The latest tragedy occurred on Monday, when thirteen people, including a two year old child, were burnt alive near Chiniot when their van caught fire and exploded after a fuel leak from three gas cylinders fixed on the underside of the wagon. A more horrific and ghastly death is difficult to imagine. On May 24 this year, sixteen school children and their teacher had also been killed and seven students injured in Gujrat after a van carrying 24 children caught fire when the driver reportedly attempted to switch his dual-fuel vehicle from gas to petrol. The subsequent explosion resulted in this irreparable and traumatic loss for the families of the innocent child victims. In fact, death by cylinder has become a regular feature of our public transport system, and the unfortunate commuters continue to suffer whether in Larkana, Faisalabad or elsewhere. Even otherwise, Pakistan has the world’s worst record as far as fatal road accidents are concerned, a dubious and deadly distinction. The poor state of the roads, which are often dug up and then forgotten, the ill-maintained vehicles which are squeezed to the last drop like milch cows without a dime being spent on them, the Formula One mindset of the drivers, and their sudden tendency to regard their creaking vehicle as a jet aircraft at full throttle, are also to blame for the country’s dangerous roads. But the worst culprit is sheer negligence on the part of the driver, the conductor and the commuters alike. With the shortfall in gas due to declining reserves, the menace of the gas cylinder is likely to recede as the supply to the CNG stations is gradually tapered off. But this might take some time or it may never happen in fact, as the powerful owner lobby might force the government to import gas in some other form to keep their highly profitable ventures running. It is therefore of the essence that the government enact strict laws regarding the safety of the gas cylinders being installed in the public transport vehicles and follow it up with an effective checking and monitoring mechanism to avert future mishaps. All the expressions of deep grief and sorrow expressed after the event by those in positions of power cannot assuage the deep sense of loss of the families of the victims. Prevention is the key.

A
S the Indian government, media and its extremist political parties needlessly up the ante in their rhetoric against Pakistan, tempers on both sides have been running high. Accusations relating to the line of control violations are being freely tossed at Pakistan by India and more dangerously, the threat of war now being hurled (both countries are equipped with nuclear arsenal) simply borders on the insane. With the Indian elections fast approaching, in first half of 2014, one can somewhat understand the high pitch of the anti-Pakistan record being played by the Indian politicians – for strangely a negative fixation with Pakistan still finds traction with the Indian public. But with no such compulsions or complexes at home the Pakistani leadership has to avoid the bait by showing more maturity. So far, it has done well by displaying a good deal of restraint. Ironically, the standoff could not have come at a worse time for India and Pakistan. Both countries are struggling economically and in order to serve the ‘real’ interests of their people should instead be focusing on enhancing economic linkages and bilateral trade and not war hysteria. Pakistan’s economy as we know has been consistently slowing down since the last six years, presenting some serious challenges relating to high inflation, low investment, rising current account deficit, declining reserves, an eroding Pak Rupee, high unemployment and persistent energy and security issues that continue to hold ‘economic growth’ hostage. In order to spur the economy what the country needs is investment and trade, and for this its natural priority should be its neighbourhood. India on the other hand also seems to be going through one of its lowest economic periods since the early 1990s. For the past 10 years, India seemed poised to take off, for a place alongside China as one of the dominant economic powerhouses of Asia. Its economy was strengthening and its corporate leadership was striding across the world stage. The last eight months however have not only dented India’s confidence in itself,

but a growing chorus by critics (outside of India) is also starting to ask whether India’s quick rise was merely an illusion without any sound or a sustainable footing. Last week India’s rupee completed its biggest monthly loss since 1992 – the world’s worst currency performance – on concerns of its further deepening economic slowdown and exiting of investors from India, amidst a global recessionary backdrop where the USA is making its intentions clear to pare its stimulus at home. This weakness of the Indian dupee largely stems from its large current account deficit, caused by its huge imports of gold and higher costs of its crude oil and coal imports. Further, the Indian stock market has dropped value by more than 10 per cent in the past quarter alone and its economy has expanded just 4.4 percent compared with the same period in the previous year (and from 4.8 percent in the preceding three months). These figures are well below expectations, making it India’s worst performance since 2009. Even more alarmingly, BNP Paribas Asia’s department of equity strategy is viewing India’s growth problems to in fact escalate in the coming months ( growth at only 3.7 percent, which would be its weakest since 1992) unless of course it quickly takes some bold initiatives. Recent economic history is full of examples where countries have achieved higher growth through enhanced economic and trade linkages. In fact the world economy itself over the last decade has mostly grown on the back of enhanced global trade. In stark contrast, the eight member countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) though account for around a quarter of humanity (a total population of nearly 1.7 billion), its combined share of the world’s GDP is a meager 3 per cent, followed by a tiny 2 per cent of world exports and a lowly 1.7 per cent of the total global FDI. Sadly, this poor showing of SAARC is mostly due to the fact that its two largest members, India and Pakistan, tend to stifle each other’s economic potential instead of complementing it. In a setting where India represents 75 per cent of the
population of the region, 63 per cent of its land area and 81 per cent of its combined GDP, intra-regional trade as a percentage of GDP was recorded at only 30 per cent in 2010. Compare this with other regions, East Asia (58 per cent) and Europe (66 per cent) and one can easily understand why both India and Pakistan suffer from such a high and unhealthy dependence on global economic developments cum shocks. The region also exhibits a similar tepid performance when it comes to investment integration within the region. According to an Asian Development Bank study conducted in 2010, SAARC is the least integrated region in the world. If Pakistan and India have to achieve meaningful and sustained economic growth and development this negativity has to change. And which two leaders better suited to this than Nawaz Sharif and Manmohan Singh – Sharif was the architect of the first real economic reforms in Pakistan (and perhaps also the first within the SAARC region) back in the early 1990s and Manmohan Singh took a leaf from his book by emulating similar measures in India when he was the Indian finance minister around the same period in time. What these leaders need to remember is that economic dynamism through mutual economic reliance creates its own peace dynamics. In an entirely different setting altogether the second round of talks between China, Japan and South korea for a trilateral free trade agreement (FTA) ended on August 16, 2013, in Shanghai. As expected, the three nations made virtually no progress worth reporting during these talks, but it does not mean that the talks achieved nothing. The three nations are scheduled to hold a third round of talks in Japan by the end of this year, which in itself indicates the strong willingness to connect the three nations by cementing their mutual trade and economic inter-linkages. The post talks joint communiqué simply stated: “China-Japan-South korea Free Trade Agreement is irreversible”. Pakistan and India ought to learn from their resolve!
Ironically, the standoff could not have come at a worse time. Both countries are struggling economically and in order to serve the ‘real’ interests of their people should instead be focusing on enhancing economic linkages and bilateral trade and not war hysteria.

Countering terrorism Pakistan has two basic problems; the menace of terrorism and the resultant shattering economy. The terrorism we are facing belongs to our own land and our own people; we never heard of any Hindu or Christian or the Buddhist exploding himself as a suicide bomber; here, a suicide bomber is never from any other religion. First of all we will have to trace the origin of these suicide attackers; we will have to talk to their patrons and convince them to review their approach and opinions. Be it the suicide bombers or their patrons; they all must be dealt as the people who have lost their direction, not as terrorists. We are
lucky enough that we have so many respectable and honourable Pakistani politicians and religious scholars who have a very strong influence on different Muslim militant groups. Recently Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, a very popular religious scholar with a lot of devoted followers, has offered his services to the government of Pakistan to work as a bridge between the militants and the government of Pakistan. The government of Pakistan must take benefit of his offer and utilise his expertise and influence for the betterment of situation. In short things will have to be treated very carefully and very wisely. Any negligence or laxity in this regard would simply complicate the situation. PROFESSOR ALI SUKHANVER Multan

Tectonic shift in party politics The states of the nation will determine the state of India
C
HANGE is a mist which floats through events, often obscured by the daily cloudburst of facts. It is noticed least by those it affects most. Politicians have a sharper eye than they are given credit for, but they can miss the obvious. A tectonic shift is taking place in the structure of party politics. After a m J AKBAR long and dominant reign, the high command is dead. It has become a dinosaur, a museum piece whose skeletal jaw hints at the massive bite it once possessed. Sonia Gandhi and Lk Advani are the last inheritors of a concept that has exhausted its moment in history. After them, there will be command, but it will not be very high. As in so much else, Mahatma Gandhi institutionalised the idea. In 1919, when he took control, he reinvented a topheavy Congress with some radical engineering. He created a pyramid without slopes. Gandhi sat, or strode, at the apex. Across the wide base were the masses, busy building crypts in which Gandhi intended to bury the British Empire. The relationship between people and leader was direct, without intermediaries, nourished by mutual sacrifice and commitment. Gandhi was transparent about his methods. He called himself a dictator before anyone could accuse him of being one. Ascent between base and summit was by nomination, as Subhas Bose was to discover when he claimed an independent share of the mantle. Of course Gandhi never imagined that Congress would become family property merely one generation after his martyrdom, but his pyramid-without-sides was perfectly suited for a dynastic module in which a different set of Gandhis claimed the first word and had the last one. The seal of authority is with the family, not the prime minister, whether the issue be a minor nominee for any position or partition of a state like Andhra Pradesh. Non-Congress parties devised variations peculiar to individual culture. Communists imported their command structure from the Soviet Union; it lasted about as long as the Soviet Union. The Marxist politburo is a pale shadow of what it was even under Harkishen Singh Surjit. Today, the Bengal and kerala parties shrug and take their own decisions. India’s melee of socialists, who were more democratic than Congress but not necessarily more egalitarian, despised the idea of command so much that they went the extra mile and destroyed their leaders. The movement, paradoxically, could only survive by splitting. It has quietly abandoned ideology for caste, and inducted some stability through family rule in smaller but more homogenous units. The BJP created a high command, RSS, which served primarily as a guardian of ideology. This involved some contradictions. When the BJP was too weak to protect the Indian state in a national crisis, RSS gave nation priority over party and readily allied with Congress PM Lal Bahadur Shastri during the 1965 war with Pakistan, lauded Mrs Indira Gandhi as a goddess after the formation of Bangladesh in 1971 and helped her during the seminal challenges from secessionist forces in the 1980s despite the fact that she had banned RSS during the Emergency. On a parallel course, RSS interacted with BJP through a small set of Delhi leaders, who thereby also became pre-eminent figures in the party. A rising federal impulse has also changed the character of parties. If chief ministers now bring in the votes, they will also take the decisions. The central government does not manage any geography; CMs administer the country. Delhi is almost quasi-colonial. It collects taxes, shapes legislation and takes some responsibility for security, but any policy relevant to the people, including food security, is the business of states. Delhi might, for electoral reasons, usurp advertising rights, but the real annadata is the chief minister. This phenomenon has strengthened regional formations, but also exposed their limitations, for none of them is in a position to provide the strong kernel without which a national alliance becomes too flimsy to survive. The solution to this conundrum? National parties with strong regional spokes. Indian politics will mirror India. The balance of power within BJP has shifted. Its CMs are not beholden to Delhi; if anything, it is the other way round. The leadership tensions we report today are part of the transition process. Congress is less tense only because its provincial leadership has been emasculated. And yet, even a weakling like kiran Reddy can threaten to split over Telengana; while in Assam a confident Tarun Gogoi swats away local ambition promoted by Delhi. Gogoi has measured the high command and knows it has potency issues. Rahul Gandhi will not be able to run Congress as his mother has done, let alone his grandmother, Indira Gandhi. If he had a stronger personality he might have postponed the inevitable, but not prevented it. Change took its time, but it has arrived. The states of the nation will determine the state of India.

what we are debating And what we are not

S a result of President Barack Obama’s decision to ask the US Congress to support his call for “limited” strikes against the Assad regime, we find ourselves in the throes of a much needed, but still incomplete national debate on the wisdom of the US policy toward Syria. During the past week, several themes have emerged in this discussion over the course of American policy toward the conflict that has ravaged that country and its people. What we know is that well over 100,000 have died at the hands of both the regime and the various groups fighting against it. More than two million refugees have fled the fighting, living in miserable conditions – in some instances, threatening the stability of their host countries. Another four million have been internally displaced. As it has evolved, the conflict has taken on a worrisome sectarian dimension fracturing not only Syrian society, but the region, as well. It is an enormous tragedy, not unlike last decade’s horror in Iraq, and it is tearing at the heart of the Arab World. And now, there is clear evidence of the use of chemical weapons resulting in the deaths of over 1,000 innocent civilians, bringing the US to the point of intervention. It is at this point, that the US debate begins. There are a few themes that have become central to the arguments supporting the president’s position for military action. First and foremost among these is the fact that this horrible crime of using of chemical weapons should not go unpunished. In making the US case, Secretary of State John kerry has presented evidence tying this attack to the Assad regime, making the administration’s argument that there must be accountability for this heinous act. The president and his supporters in Congress have argued that should the US stand by and allow this crime to go unpunished, there would be several negative consequences: the Assad regime would feel no restraint and could continue to use such weapons in the future with impunity; and the “international norm” against the use of chemical weapons would
be breached, allowing other “rogue” states and nonstate actors to feel that they too could act in such an unacceptable manner. Finally, the White House has argued that if the US were not to act forcefully against this violation, after having declared the use of chemical weapons to be a “red line” that must not be crossed, the credibility and leadership of US would be seriously compromised. In making its case for action, the White House argued for “limited strikes” designed to “deter and degrade” the regime’s capacity to carry out such attacks in the future. Initially the president described his intent to deliver “a shot across the bow” to send a message that would “deter” the Syrian regime from any further use of chemical weapons. But as the debate evolved, one detects the Administration placing more emphasis on their intent to “degrade” the capacity of the regime to deliver such weapons Such is the argument made by those who are supporting the White House call for military action against Syria. Opponents to the use of force have raised several issues, which they note have not been fully factored into the Administration’s consideration. Both hawks and doves have questioned, each from their own vantage point, the advisability of “limited” strikes. Hawks have criticised the president for not doing enough, pressing their case for more decisive action. As framed by one member of Congress, “doing more” would mean “ending the Assad regime and replacing it with a secular moderate democracy”. A leading voice among those who have been pressing the White House to do more, Senator John McCain succeeded in inserting language into the Senate bill authorising the use of force calling for a more robust use of force (short of “boots on the ground”) that would “change the momentum on the battlefield” in favour of the Syrian opposition. For their part, doves have warned of the dangers of another US military engagement in the Arab world. They argue that the proposed limited strike would place the US on a “slippery slope” with today’s calls “to do something” being followed by tomorrow’s calls “to do more”. They point to the “Powell Doctrine” enunciated by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell. In 1990, Powell laid out conditions he stipulated must be met before the US should ever consider committing to military action – in essence asking that the costs, consequences, terms of engagement, and degree of support (internationally and domestically) be clearly understood. Those arguing against the strikes say
that the Administration has not yet provided clear answers to Powell’s terms for military engagement. One item in Powell’s list of conditions has proved especially troublesome for the Administration, and that is the need for broad international and domestic support. Public opinion polls and town meetings with members of Congress have demonstrated that a vocal majority of Americans are profoundly weary of war. And while the administration blames the Russians for “holding the UN hostage” with regard to Syria (a charge which Arabs might say also describes the way the US handles issues involving Israel that come before the world body), the reality is that many other nations, including some close European allies, are either sceptical or outright opposed to the use of force in Syria. Other issues that have been considered, but not always given sufficient attention, include: the consequence to diplomacy of the US becoming a combatant in this war; the impact that even the anticipation of military action has already had on accelerating the outflow of refugees – it is now estimated, for example, that one-half of Syria’s Christians have fled the country; how Syria’s allies will respond—not just Iran and Hizbullah, but Iraq, as well; and how, despite their antipathy for the Assad regime, Arab public opinion will react to any US military action. Some opponents of the use of military force propose alternatives like: securing a broad-based UN General Assembly resolution referring the Syrian leadership to the International Criminal Court for war crimes; and demanding that the Assad government join the 189 nations who have endorsed the Chemical Weapons Convention and destroy its stockpile of these banned materials. Ideas, such as these, they argue, would isolate the regime and humiliate it, without compromising the US role or further exacerbating the conflict. In any case, the debate is on and will be decided in the coming weeks. What should be a concern is that lost in this entire conversation is the impact US military action would have on the final resolution of this two and one-half year old conflict. Both hawks and doves, alike, pay insufficient attention to the reality that the only resolution to the conflict is a negotiated settlement. This is where the emphasis should be. It is toward realisation of this goal, that our pressure and diplomacy should be focused. And this is what we should be debating.
Both hawks and doves, alike, pay insufficient attention to the reality that the only resolution to the conflict is a negotiated settlement. This is where the emphasis should be.

when Shah rukh lost boman irani on plane
S
UPERSTAR Shah Rukh Khan loves the calm and ‘alone-time’ that he gets to experience while flying. “Love the solitude in a plane cabin. Makes me feel extremely cosy and restful. Need to catch up on some much needed sleep. Love you all,” SRK posted on Twitter. However, he was later surprised when his “Happy New Year” co-star Boman Irani disappeared on the plane. “My extremely distinguished friend Boman is a class act. It’s the first time I have lost someone on a plane. Nobody could find him!!! How?” he posted on the microblogging site. Shah Rukh did not elaborate where Boman had disappeared to. Directed by Farah Khan, “Happy New Year” also stars Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan. COURTESy TOi

promising actresses: why did they disappear?
T
HEy came into the industry with a bang and the entire industry vouched for their talent. However, their stardom fizzled out just like a bottle of coke right after a film or two. Here’s a look at some of the Bollywood beauties who at one point seemed to be the most promising actresses of B- Town, but soon faded into oblivion.
bhagyashree
Bhagyashree rose to overnight stardom with the super hit movie ‘Maine Pyar kiya’. Blockbuster of the year, MPk had announced the arrival of the next big thing in B- town. Her childlike voice and infectious smile left her fans yearning for more. But Bhagyashree being a demure beauty refused to work with anyone other than her husband. A few ‘blink-ofan-eye’ roles here and there and she gradually faded into oblivion.
The TV starlet created a rage among the audience with her dynamic performance as ‘Gauri’ in ‘Lagaan’. Right when she entered the league of ‘top Bollywood actresses’, her next movie ‘Armaan’ as the lead, bumped badly at the box office. Her reluctance towards glamorous roles and more prominence towards regional movies gradually led her way out of Bollywood.

mahima chaudhary
Subhash Ghai’s protege, Mahima wooed the audience with her iconic role of a village belle in ‘Pardes’. Her simple look and innocence in the movie won numerous hearts, but none of her movies could cast the same spell on the audience after ‘Pardes’.
The green eyed beauty could send shivers down the spine with just one look. Her sensuous body language and intense intimate scenes in ‘kasoor’ proclaimed her as one of the most promising actresses in the industry. Listed among the ‘Most Beautiful Women of the Millennium’, Lisa received accolades for her critically acclaimed role in Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ but failed to re-create the ‘kasoor’ magic among the audience again.
Ameesha Patel made huge waves with her cute looks and bubbly character in kaho Na Pyar Hai. She also delivered an all time hit ‘Gadar’ with Sunny Deol. Though the movie gave her an edge over all other actresses of the year, her choice of scripts like kya yahi Pyar Hai, ye Zindagi ka Safar added her name to the list of forgettable actresses of Bollywood. With her home production ‘Desi Magic’ set to release soon, we hope she manages to rule hearts again.

INGER Elton John is set to perform live at the Emmy Awards for the first time. The 66-year-old `Rocket Man` singer would be paying tribute to the American pianist and vocalist Liberace, whose life was told in the recent biopic, ‘Behind the Candelabra’, reported Daily Star. ‘Behind the Candelabra’ is an HBO film and is up for 15 Emmy nominations. Michael Douglas plays Liberace in the biopic and his lover Scott Thorson is portrayed by Matt Damon. They have both been nominated in the lead actor in a miniseries or movie category. The duo would also present a trophy to a winner at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards. Salman’s protege, Bhumika Chawla carved a niche with her acting skills right with her first movie, ‘Tere Naam’. The movie bagged her many awards for her hard hitting debut performance. But like the rest of Salman’s heroines, she too failed to sizzle on the big screen again. Happily married to yoga guru Bharat Thakur, Bhumika is making it big in Tollywood.
aditi rao hydari, John abraham, ameesha patel: has skin show helped these actors?
b
OLLyWOOD has changed drastically over the last decade. Today it’s not just good acting skills that matters in B-town. A little skin goes a long way when it comes to attracting attention and bringing the masses in to the theatres. Here are some beauties – and a hunk – that entered B-town fairly successfully, but went for a makeover on and off screen to sustain their careers. Did taking the skimpy route work for them? you tell us… Aditi Rao Hydari – This lady made her debut in 2007 with Delhi-6, playing Abhishek Bachchan’s aunt. She soon realised that it required more than acting skills to make a mark in B-town. She quickly went for a makeover and chose to show off a bold and sassy avatar in her second film yeh Saali Zindagi. Steamy scenes and a lip lock with herLondon Paris New york co-star Ali Zafar didn’t really bring the much needed boost to her career. She then stepped into the Murder franchise and displayed her sensual side in Murder 3. And now this pretty and petite actor will be seen in Akshay kumar’s Boss, upping the glam quotient as she walks out of the water in a pink and orange bikini. That’s not all – the actor recently shot a spread for a men’s magazine and got temperatures soaring. Posing in lingerie, flashing her immaculate skin and showing off those luscious curves, Aditi was a sexy siren. Nobody could say that she was once the quintessential girl next door, can they? And so far,
the skimpy style has worked for this lass! Rani Mukerji – Not many could have expected Rani Mukerji to resort to skin show after having done such challenging roles – and winning awards a-plenty – but the actor seemed to have no other way out of the doldrums that her career had sunk in to. She appeared in a bikini bra in a sequence in Dil Bole Hadippa, but did it pay off? Considering the box-office collections of the film, no. The film failed to impress anyone, not the critics, not the masses. Her supersexy bareness in Aiyyaa didn’t give the required boost to her career either. After that came Talaash, where Rani was draped in simple sarees and… guess what! The audiences just couldn’t stop applauding her fabulous acting in the film. We think that Rani should concentrate on impressing with her talent instead of her curves. Ameesha Patel – Despite her fashionforward wardrobe in her super-successful debut film kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, the petite Ameesha Patel came across as a girl next door. And the ‘cute’ tag stuck to her for many films thereafter. All covered up in Gadar opposite Sunny Deol, AP managed to win over the audience once again. And then the road sloped steeply downhill for her filmi life. And after a break for getting into shape and revamping her love life, Ameesha bounced back in a sexy avatar with a special appearance in the
Rani Mukerji-Saif Ali khan starrer Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. While Lazy lamhe got her eyeballs, it didn’t really fuel her fast-failing career. She went on to play the perfect blonde in Race 2, but was completely eclipsed by Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandes’ combined star presence. Ameesha has now decided to go ultra-glam for her debut production venture featuring herself – Desi Magic. In fact, at the launch event she posed in lacy lingerie! Will she manage to bring back the desi magic she had in her debut or will it be yet another dive? Minissha Lamba – She wanted to be a journalist, but destiny and ambition had other plans for her, Minissha made her Btown debut in yahaan, which was a sensitive and well-crafted film. She managed to cultivate a girl-next-door image until the film kidnap, in which she went all sexy and sassy with an allegedly…err…enhanced figure. But her new avatar didn’t really go down well with the audiences and, like her bikiniclad self, sank. So to win the hearts of her fans again, she reportedly underwent reverse surgery to get back to her cute girlnext-door image. However, she denied all these reports. Be that as it may, neither her girl-next-door image nor her sexy avatar helped her to make a mark in Bollywood. COURTESy BOllyWOOdliFE
Supermodel Diana Penty became an instant star with her ‘to die for’ looks and natural acting skills. While sleeper hit ‘Cocktail’ gave her instant fame all across and it was expected that she would be bombarded with offers, nothing of that sort seems to have happened till now. And the latest we hear is, Sooraj Barjatya’s untitled next starring Salman khan, has also slipped out of her hands. Well, we just hope Diana continues to be in fight! COURTESy TOi
Miley gets naked for ‘wrecking ball’ ride
For the three people who haven’t seen a close-up of Miley Cyrus’ rear (probably because they were stuck under rocks), her new music video offers another chance. The 20-year-old singer has released the clip for “Wrecking Ball,” an emotional ballad so raw that Cyrus gets stark naked to get her point across. The video starts off innocently enough, with MTV correctly pegging Cyrus as pulling off a sadder, new era Sinead O’Connor from “Nothing Compares 2U.” But Cyrus’ inspiration quickly shifts from Sinead to strip club: Before long, the star has shed a cropped white tank top and white underwear in favour of nothing at all, and sits atop a gigantic wrecking ball, swinging away in the nude. “Don’t you ever say I just walked away/I will always want you... All I wanted was to break your walls/All you ever did was wreck me,” Cyrus wails as she fondles (and then licks) a sledgehammer. But on the plus side for her critics: Look, no twerking! nEWS dESK

WO different artists from two different countries but one agenda — pop singer Shehzad Roy and band Guns N’ Roses will be seen performing together at the Peace through Music Gala in Los Angeles, for improving and promoting quality education. Pakistani artists often travel abroad either on a cultural tour or simply to export their talent and settle down. However, philanthropist and pop artist Shehzad Roy has always been a true patriot, trying his best to contribute towards society — Zindagi Trust being his most significant effort. The trust works to reform public schools, educate working children, and lobby the government to improve the education policy in Pakistan. Simultaneously, Guns N’ Roses’ drummer Matt Sorum has been working towards the promotion of arts education in the US. Adopt the Arts is a foundation that unites public figures and celebrities to help in fostering creativity in public schools. In the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), 50% of elementary schools are not receiving arts education due to budget cuts. Also, 80% of its students live at or below the poverty line, so they do not have access to arts outside the school either. Hence, Adopt the Arts came to the fore with the mission of saving arts education. Considering the renowned artists have a similar aim, what could be better than a musical collaboration? “Separated by 8,000 miles — Adopt the Arts and Zindagi Trust — are two non-profit organisations with similar missions founded by musicians [Sorum and Roy]. This led Adopt the Arts co-founder, Abby Berman, and me to collaborate on the Gala to build bridges between different
cultures,” says Sadia Ashraf, senior publicist of the Prenner Group, which is managing event. “We are more alike than different. Our present and future generations are becoming a global village due to a universal culture of social media and communications. They need to be shown that regardless of race, religion and culture, how alike we are and that we need to respect other cultures to march towards peace,” asserts Ashraf. “Having entertainers and celebrities are an end to a means — it attracts people’s attention to the plight of children in Pakistan who deserve quality education and also many parts of America where children are poverty-stricken.” Clearly, it is an exciting venture for fans of both the artists and surely an exciting one for Roy as well. “It’s a big honour to perform with such names. Guns N’ Roses is the number one band in US.
[Sadly], Pakistan is known internationally to export other items however, this is something different and way beyond it,” says Roy, adding that music is a powerful medium for driving change. While for a Pakistani artist, it is a huge opportunity, Storum, too, feels that is a great, peaceful effort to bridge the gap between the two countries. “I feel this collaboration is a solid step towards building bridges of peace between the East and West. Music is the universal language of humanity. If Shehzad and I can join hands to help children, then maybe others will join us in a global effort to educate younger generations about each other’s cultures,” says Storum. Roy’s line-up consists of songs like Apney Ulloo and kangna. However, he will also be performing on a new song called Land of Pure, in collaboration with the band called.

salman never rehearses, often forgets: abhinav kashyap A BHINAV kashyap talks about the contrasting personalities of Salman and Ranbir and his rumoured relationship with Pallavi
WHAT IS RANBIR KAPooR DoING IN A FILM LIKE BESHARAM? Apart from Rishi and Neetuji coming together, Ranbir is the biggest selling point of my film. There’s no substitute to him. It wasn’t too big a task to convince Ranbir. I sent him a message, and he showed interest in meeting me. This was in September 2011, when he was shooting Barfi! When we met, he didn’t ask for a narration, but kept the script. He read it overnight and the next day sent me a confirmation saying he wants to do the film. There was no persuasion required. oPPoSITE RK, yoU CoULD HAvE

I wanted someone who would have exclusive time for the film, as the shooting of Besharam was slated between yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Bombay Velvet. At that point of time, none of the lead actresses had that kind of time. Which is why, we decided to go ahead with a fresh face. Rumour has it that your proximity with Pallavi got her the role. Somehow, they didn’t question me about Sonakshi. Why are they linking me with Pallavi? Were they scared that Shatrughanji would come after them? These rumours happen for a reason; they are created for a
reason. And in totality it benefits the film. However, Pallavi and I have become close friends. CoMPARE SALMAN AND RANBIR... They are two different people. Salman
never rehearses and often forgets his lines. He is very spontaneous, though. A lot of times, even the director is in the dark - we don’t know what he’d say in a particular scene until he goes ahead and says it. But that works for him. On the other hand, Ranbir is the most hardworking actor I have seen. He rehearses meticulously, sometimes days in advance. HoW DID yoU MANAGE To CoNvINCE THE SENIoR KAPooRS To BE A PART oF THE FILM? They had one demand—they wanted to read the scripts individually, and even if one had a problem, then it wouldn’t work out. They told me they had received innumerable offers, and would do Besharam only if they were entirely convinced. Thankfully, it worked in my favour.

IMBABWE allowed Pakistan to claw back into the match in the third session of the second Test in Harare after keeping the bowlers at bay for two-thirds of the day. The hosts had survived a treacherous morning session with only the loss of their openers before scoring 100 for 1 in a fruitful afternoon session, but they lost four wickets to the old ball and one to the second new ball to find them in a familiar position. Junaid khan provided the first of the five breakthroughs when he had Malcolm Waller caught behind soon after tea, but it was Abdur Rehman who made the crucial breakthrough when he trapped Brendan Taylor lbw while on the sweep. Taylor, who had been dropped at mid-off by Rahat Ali in Rehman’s previous over, was a touch unlucky though as the ball hit him marginally outside the line of off stump. But there wasn’t much resistance from Elton Chigumbura and Richmond Mutumbami, the last of the recognised batsmen, and Zimbabwe’s innings was caught in the downward spiral. The pitch, which was thought to be underprepared, mostly stayed true on the first day. The final score was much less than what seemed possible at one stage. The nature of the pitch still unknown, it could be a good first-innings total. For Zimbabwe though, apart from Hamilton Masakadza and Taylor, none of the batsmen were able to apply themselves against Pakistan’s tenacious bowling. Masakadza and Taylor had come together at the dismissal of Vusi Sibanda with the score on 31, but added 110 runs together to settle the nerves after initial jitters. The century partnership between the two was a story of two halves; first, dominated by
Masakadza and second, by Taylor. In the initial phase, Masakadza looked to score freely while Taylor soaked up the deliveries. Masakadza stayed back against the spinners, but was quick to pounce on anything tossed up, preferring to hit over the infield. One such shot took him to his first half-century against Pakistan. Two overs later, Masakadza punched a quicker one to the cover boundary to bring up the fifty of the partnership, with Taylor scoring only 7. In the next half though, Taylor assumed the role of the aggressor, announcing his intentions with aerial boundaries off Saeed Ajmal and Rehman. The run-rate hovered around 2.5, but when the opportunities came, Taylor
made sure he was ready. He reverse-swept an Ajmal doosra, then creamed a full delivery from Rahat Ali to the cover
boundary. As the two batsmen crossed the 100 of the stand, Taylor had taken over the scoring, with 32 runs in the second fifty.

Former greats threaten protest over hockey slump SPORTS DESK Retired Pakistani stars on Tuesday threatened to burn their medals and protest publicly unless the government steps in to reverse a spectacular decline in the national game, field hockey. Pakistan, four-times world champions with three Olympic golds, failed to win the Asia Cup earlier this month and so failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup to be held in The Netherlands. The failure sparked a nation-wide
protest by fans and a group of Olympians demanded that the prime minister remove incumbent officials at the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF). “Prime minister Nawaz Sharif is the patron of the PHF and he must take some time out of his busy schedule to address the serious and fatal slump in our national sport,” former captain and coach Islahuddin Siddiqui told a news conference. “The current federation has failed to produce results in the last five years and
we now have nothing left in our hockey, this federation must go or else we will protest,” demanded Islah. Another Olympian, Ayaz Mahmood, threatened to burn his medals. “For us hockey is our pride, life and everything and if nothing is done to improve our hockey, I will burn my Olympic gold medal,” said Mahmood, a member of Pakistan’s last Olympic gold winning team in 1984. Pakistan’s nose-dive slump saw them finish last in the 2010 World Cup in India.

bAsHIr All seT To eArn HIs spUrs SPORTS DESK To put it in the simplest sense, Bashir Ahmad is a fledgling MMA fighter. He’s been celebrated around the Muay Thai circuits; however he’s only had two professional MMA bouts to date – both wins. But he’s already accomplished more for the MMA scene at home, in Asia, and globally than many fighters have in their entire careers with the sport. Ahmad started out his ambitious plan by giving back to the community in the form of opening up Pakistan’s first actual MMA gym. Through daily rolling brownouts of electricity, he kept classes rolling in 40-degree plus temperatures. He funneled his personal savings into the venture and rapidly increased the scale to include Pakistan’s first MMA promotion and the development of an amateur athletics league. And then, he took his first pro fight. Now Ahmad is about to go toe to toe with his second foe at ONE FC 10 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It’s no small matter, as it will (again) be in front of a huge crowd, and his opponent has a highly-touted skill set, being a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt who is a coach at Evolve MMA. But he sees Bruno Pucci as more than the sum of his accolades, and he has been preparing well for the challenge. During fight week, Ahmad had some time on his hands to relax, and we had a nice conversation. He was very open with MMAin-ASIA about his upcoming fight, his efforts in Pakistan, and how the ONE FC network has enabled his life to completely change. MMA-in-ASIA: When I first met you, you were just a humble guy trying to make a go of it at opening an MMA gym in Pakistan. Now you’re internationally known and people actually tell me, “Oh, I got to meet Bashir.” Ahmad: Seriously? That’s weird. MMA-in-ASIA: But true! What has being involved with ONE FC as a network before actually becoming a pro fighter done for you? Ahmad: I was signed to ONEFC before being a pro actually but being part of the network has made the Asian scene very real. It’s made everyone feel like they mean something. Before I was just a random guy and there were other randoms like me throughout Asia just following their hearts and having fun. The ONEFC network made everyone sit up and really think about the impact they have had in the scene.

MMA-in-ASIA: Do you think they are setting the trend in Asia? Ahmad: I think the individuals are setting the trends. They are harnessing that energy and turning it into something tangible a real Asian MMA scene. MMA-in-ASIA: you’ve become sort of “THE” Pakistani guy in MMA. What do you want to be your greatest impact from this? Ahmad: As THE guy as you put it, I hope to serve as a good representative of the country. I hoped can set the standard for the other fighters to come. There will be other fighters who are much better than me to come in te future. That bar will will be raised as that standard crosses. But I hope that each fighter can try to create the positive vibes that I am tryin to put out for the country. MMA-in-ASIA: No pressure? Ahmad: No pressure. I know I work
hard and I will give my best each fight. If I do that then winning and losing is simply a matter of fate in my opinion. MMA-in-ASIA: Who will be in your corner for this fight? Ahmad: My corner is to be Bill Easlick, a Division 1 wrestler. Former MMA champ in Ohio, US. Family of boxers and an awesome coach who is my First hands in MMA mentor in my MMA career. MMA-in-ASIA: So does that mean you’re planning on playing a wrestling game? Ahmad: I’m going to be playing an MMA game. MMA-in-ASIA: What do you expect from your opponent? China grudgingly congratulated Japan on Monday on its successful bid to host the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, after the government had initially refused to offer any praise over the supposedly non-political event. Ties between the world’s second- and thirdlargest economies have been shadowed for years by what Beijing says has been Tokyo’s refusal to properly atone for wartime atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in China between 1931 and 1945. “We have noted the decision by the International Olympic Committee,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news briefing.Asked specifically whether China had offered congratulations, Hong said such a question should be directed to the Chinese Olympic Committee. China hosted a highly successful Olympics in 2008, and Hong said this was an experience China could share with Japan.“We are willing to share the experience of hosting the Olympics with Japan,” he added.
know when he gets hit he will revert to his instincts and bread and butter. This is a good match up for both of our development as fighters. MMA-in-ASIA: you showed a lot of heart in your first fight. Now that there’s distance between that and now, how do you look back upon that fight and think about it? Ahmad: I appreciate everyone saying I showed heart. But I really think I just did what anyone would do if they actually come to this sport for the right reasons. If someone wants to get into MMA for glory, maybe a cut would deflate their will. But I think anyone who came to the sport to test themselves would have done the same as me. I appreciate the praise and it’s given me confidence that people have that impression of me because I hope it makes me even tougher for the next fight – because I now
have a standard to uphold. All around coming back the fight was a great first fight. 3 rounds. Tested my cardio and gave me ring time. It was the perfect first fight for me and a great way to start my career. MMA-in-ASIA: It sounds like that based on your introspection alone, you’ve probably already created a mental plan for your next fight. Is that the case? Ahmad: Mentally preparing yourself is half the fight in my opinion. Training 90% physical 10% mental. Fighting is 10% physical 90% mental. MMA-in-ASIA: Very interesting outlook. Does this analytical approach become your strength? Could you also be over analyzing? Do you “think too much” or is this just Bashir? Ahmad: I get told I think too much all the time. So I guess it’s just me. MMA-in-ASIA: How’s your diet going? I know you eat pretty healthy anyway. Ahmad: Diet is good. I was eating super healthy back in the USA but I also had a lot more distractions. I bought two boxes of little Debbie fatty cakes to eat after my fight. I have a big sweet tooth and I indulge while eating healthy but when I get super strict with my diet and cut it all out I have serious cravings. Singapore was easy since I was alone in the mosque. This time it was quite frustrating but I made it MMA-in-ASIA: What was it like, staying in the mosque? Ahmad: Peaceful. I will try and do something similar for my next fight. The experience was so profound that I felt something was missing during this fight camp and I realise that I need that isolation. And I will try to incorporate it for every possible fight from now on. MMA-in-ASIA: It sounds like when there are fight movies made, and they show the fighter entering the arena, and from the fighter’s point of view, everything is silent. Calm before the storm. Is it like that? Ahmad: It was for me. MMA-in-ASIA: There will be plenty of people looking forward to that storm on Friday, enjoy it. Do you have any sponsors you wish to note? Ahmad: I want to thank Stone Age Jeans. They are my biggest sponsor right now. They are one of the biggest clothing brands in Pakistan. For the first time in a decade Roger Federer went into a major as an outsider a couple of weeks ago. His results this year in majors read: SF, QF and R2; and many felt that going into the US Open the Swiss maestro would maybe spring a surprise sans the cumbersome burden of expectation. Well, no one can deny that Federer did surprise us all. With the sort of year he’s had, a fourth round exit wouldn’t exactly have been dubbed a catastrophe, but a straight sets defeat against Tommy Robredo is arguably an even bigger shock than his second round loss against Sergiy Stakhovsky at Wimbledon. It wasn’t as if he’d lost to one of his younger top 10 competitors, the loss was against a man as old as Federer – someone the Swiss hadn’t lost to in their previous 10 meetings. This means Federer has now only won a single major since January 2010
and has fallen down the pecking order, with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray forming the Big Three and a group of usual suspects for majors in the foreseeable future. When you’re 32 and have won a record 17 majors, not being among the favourites for the biggest accolades shouldn’t exactly give you sleepless nights. But what is a cause of concern is that Federer’s decline hasn’t got anything to do with aging legs or a decline in his game, which would’ve been understandable; it’s been a case of a plunge in confidence. Despite having the most glittering tennis repertoire that the game has ever seen, Federer’s biggest strength has always been confidence. When he feels he can beat someone, he will beat him. But when doubts begin to creep in, Federer has a tendency of capitulating like a house of cards, something one doesn’t associate with all-time greats. Between 2003 and 2007, when Federer was virtually unbeatable and won 12 of his 17 majors, his toughest competition was one Andy Roddick, an inconsistent Lleyton Hewitt, an erratic Marat Safin, an aging Andre Agassi and an adolescent Rafael Nadal who hadn’t found his feet on surfaces outside of clay. This was arguably the weakest era tennis has seen since the open era began. Federer’s confidence originated from the disparity between his game and that of his competitors carried him to invincibility, until Nadal reached his prime. That and the emergence of Djokovic and Murray has meant since
2007, when Federer was 26 and was at the peak of his powers, he has managed to win only five more majors. “Only”, under the context of “17”, otherwise five majors alone would catapult most to alltime greatness. While Nadal’s forehand crosscourt to Federer’s single-handed backhand has been dubbed the Swiss’ tormentor-inchief, what actually beats him is having Rafa in his head. Nadal’s 21-10 record against Federer owes more than anything else to the mental edge that the Spaniard has. Murray’s mental strength has meant that he too has a winning head-to-head against Federer, while Djokovic has also beaten Federer in most of their meaningful matches since he’s reached his prime. Granted, the Big Three have elevated their respective games to counter Federer’s repertoire, but where they actually beat him is mental fortitude. This is precisely why despite winning almost everything that tennis has to offer and owning most all-time records, one can’t find too many occasions where Federer has staged a spectacular comeback against a top class opponent to win a match – something Nadal and Djokovic have based their successes on. The fact that Federer isn’t among the main contenders for majors anymore is not owing to his age or a dip in his game, which is as good as it has ever been. It’s basically because he no longer believes he can beat the top three at majors. This lack of confidence has meant that Federer hasn’t beaten Nadal in a major for the past six years on all three surfaces. yet,
he still carved out the occasional major when he avoided Nadal in the draw. But now with Djokovic and Murray also coming of age in the last three years or so, the Swiss maestro’s confidence has plummeted further. Almost everyone considers Federer the greatest player of all time, but few take a moment to acknowledge the fact that the lion’s share of his achievements came when he had a cakewalk in the name of competition (2003-2007). Despite his unparalleled stroke-play, Federer has never been a fighter and capitalised on the dearth of tennis prowess to bolster his own numbers. It’s not Federer’s fault that his competition wasn’t great, but it’s definitely the “tennis pundits’” fault for not acknowledging it when they deliberate over ranking all-time greats. Had Federer been five years younger, or five years older, he wouldn’t have had 17 majors or over 300 weeks as the World Number One. Probably not even close. Now with his confidence being shaky against players outside the top three as well, it would be difficult for him to conjure one more major triumph. Many wonder if Federer can have a Sampras moment, like the one American had in the 2002 US Open, when the draw opened up nicely for him en route to his 14th major. One believes Federer’s “Sampras moment” was the Wimbledon title in 2012, which should be considered one of his greatest triumphs; considering the competition at the time, and the fact that he beat Djokovic and Murray in back to back matches to win it.

AFAEL Nadal claimed his second US Open title and 13th Grand Slam crown on Monday. Nadal, 27, added the 2013 trophy to his 2010 triumph, when he completed a career Grand Slam, and capped a year that has seen him claim 10 titles and stretch his season record to 60 wins and just three losses. him a double break for 5-2. With a host of show-business glitterati looking on — including Sean Connery, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake — Nadal claimed the first set with ease after 42 minutes. The omens were looking good for the Spaniard, who had only lost three out of 154 career Grand Slam matches when winning the first set. But 26-year-old Djokovic stormed out of his slumbers and broke for 4-2 in the second set after a 54-shot rally, Nadal dumping an approach into the net. It was only the second time Nadal had dropped serve in the tournament and the setback fired him into an immediate response, hitting back at 3-4, before Djokovic broke again for 5-3 on a modest 28-shot exchange. This time, the world number one backed up it up to level the final, taking the 58-minute set with a down the line winner. Djokovic broke to love in the opening game of the third and had a point for a double break in the third before Nadal clung on to avoid dropping serve for the fourth game in a row.
HelTer sKelTer Teachers and parents often bemoan a common student habit of not bothering with their studies until the night before the exam. All hell breaks loose at that point and frantic attempts are made to understand or learn by rote a year’s worth of curriculum. Apply this to football and you have the transfer window or more specifically the transfer deadline day. It is quite remarkable how multi-million dollar entities, stay asleep for three months, are seemingly not bothered by the start of the season but are then suddenly awakened on deadline day, possibly by the annoying voice of Jim White, to complete their shopping for the first half of the football season. England, home to the self-proclaimed best league in the world was no different and it was the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid that kick started the transfer activity which then went into what David Moyes would have been praying was Fergie Time.

Bale’s record breaking albeit massively overpriced transfer fee has meant that Spurs have basically bought half a new team and a quite decent one at that although they have neglected their defence somewhat. The downside to this though was apparent at the weekend when a disjointed Spurs line up struggled to break down a far more cohesive Gunners outfit. Speaking of Arsenal, their fans were left rubbing their eyes and/or wetting their pants after the club announced the signing of Mesut Ozil. After a summer of chasing goal scorers, Wenger goes ahead and buys a goal creator. But Arsene knows or so we are told. Ozil is a quite brilliant player and the type of player that Arsenal have been selling over the last couple of years rather than buying and in that sense does send out a statement that the club can still attract and afford A-listers. That being said, did Arsenal really need another creator, when backup to Giroud is the mighty yaya Sanogo and defensive reinforcements would have probably helped the team more in an overall sense?
While Arsenal was the major source of disbelief, Manchester United provided the laughs. Their activity or lack thereof in the summer had attracted plenty of criticism and jokes in equal measure and it only got worse on deadline day. United paid close to 4 million pounds extra for a midfielder that may not have been their first choice, failed to land Fabio Coentrao on loan and had impostors running around trying to sign supposed target Ander Herrera. United’s scatter gun approach apparently saw them bid for every person under the sun who had ever kicked a ball in central midfield. The central midfielder quandary is not something that was suddenly thrust upon the club; they have been facing this conundrum for a couple of years now and while Sir Alex managed to deflect some of the attention with positive results on the pitch, one suspects that Moyes might struggle to do the same. Liverpool, who found themselves in a similar position to United’s last year learnt from their mistakes and acted swiftly in rounding up their targets this time round.
The Anfield club failed to land their ‘marquee’ targets over the course of summer but having kept Suarez and strengthened the squad in almost all areas which needed reinforcing, the Merseysiders can be quite content with their efforts in the transfer market this year. Title favourites Chelsea and City had a relatively quieter deadline day which loosely translates to Chelsea not signing another attacking midfielder and City signing a central defender. City had conducted most of their transfer business very early in the window but defensive frailties emerged after injuries to kompany and Nastasic so it was no surprise that the Manchester club looked towards defensive cover in the shape of Martin Demichelis. What was surprising though was Chelsea’s decision to send Romelu Lukaku on loan to Everton -who by the way made some decent additions to their squadconsidering the Belgian’s prolific last season, Chelsea’s striking options this season and Lukaku’s likeness to Drogba, a favourite of Mourinho.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has barred Pakistan’s illegitimate Olympic pretenders Akram Sahi, Zaffar Abbas Lak, and Ghulam Ali from taking part in any activity under the ambit of the supreme continental sporting body – meaning thereby that Pakistan under them shall not be able to participate in any Asian event in any sporting discipline. Further, khawaja Farooq Saeed and Major (Retd) Muhammad Afzal prestigious membership of the OCA committees too has been suspended. The indictment itself sounds like a damning verdict: Harming the Olympic Movement, formation of an illegal parallel body, which is “an unprecedented” act, total disregard for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the OCA instructions and finally storming the office of the legitimate and international recognized NOC. In a letter dated September 10, 2013, signed by the President of the OCA, His Royal Highness Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad AlSabah and circulated through the Pakistan Olympic Association and with copies to the POA President Lt. Gen. (Retd) Syed Arif and the IOC member from Pakistan Syed Shahid Ali reads like a riot act.
CApTAiN eTo’o QuiTS CAMerooN CHELSEA STRIKER ETO’O IS QUITTING THE NATIONAL TEAM AHEAD OF WORLD CUP QUALIFYING PLAY-OFFS JOHANNESBURG AGEnCiES
Eto’o, record four-time winner of the African Footballer of the year award, broke the news after a 1-0 win over Libya at the weekend. A Cameroon football official told AFP in yaounde that Eto’o, 32, announced his retirement to team-mates in the dressing-room after the match. “He did not give reasons why he is retiring from the national team,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Samuel thanked his team-mates for all the efforts they have made to allow him to become a better player. They prayed together and he left.” An Eto’o corner led to Aurelien Chedjou heading the winner and enabling Cameroon to top Group I after struggling for much of the campaign. The recent Chelsea recruit from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala limped off injured on the hour mark. A draw in Cairo on September 16 will reveal who six-time World Cup qualifiers Cameroon face over two legs for a place at the 2014 finals in Brazil. Possible opponents include top-five ranked countries Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria and African champions Nigeria. Eto’o has regularly disagreed with Cameroon coaches and his retirement may be linked to the selections of incumbent Volker Finke. The German reportedly ignored calls from Eto’o to start with goalkeeper Carlos kameni and striker Achille Webo against the Libyans. Eto’o was banned from the ‘Indomitable Lions’ last year after inciting a bonus-related boycott of a friendly in Algeria.
