STYLE WATCH WITH JENNY HEINZEN YORK EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, HOME ACCENTS TODAY MAGAZINE

O

ur team spoke with Jenny Heinzen York, editor-in-chief of Home Accents Today, a market-leading B2B publication that covers the home furnishings field. We thought it would be appropriate to not only ask her about décor trends – but also take the opportunity to learn from her experience in managing a successful magazine that caters to a business audience serving the home goods industry.

THREE DESIGN INFLUENCES TO KEEP AN EYE ON: Mid-century Modern continues to be extremely important within residential design. This trend may have been sparked by the popularity of the television show, Mad Men, and has displayed strong staying power over the last few years. “I don’t see it letting up any time soon.” Also, as Millennials are traditionally city dwellers, the simple nature of the design works well in smaller scale spaces.

(Candidly, we wanted to use her insight to bring news, features and updates that are relevant to OUR most important readers – YOU!) Her suggestion on how to stay current as a home furnishings editor has a parallel to how other professionals in the industry achieve continued success. One of the most important factors, Jenny cites, is traveling to the trade shows in forward-looking cities. This means going beyond the shows that are vital to the industry (think High Point and Dallas Market) and set goals to visit shows like Maison & Objet in Miami, as well as some European markets. The ability to see shows from different perspectives is a good way to see what’s happening in the industry. Also, it’s crucial to understand who you are selling to. According to Jenny, her audience isn’t looking for a lot of “trendy” products. In fact, her publication has pulled back on some of its trend coverage because home trends don’t turn as fast as fashion. Instead, Home Accents Today has opted to focus on the broader, bigger industry picture, while illustrating how it relates to more specific trends. Read on to learn other insights gleaned from our conversation with Jenny.

With charm and intrigue, new options in Progress Lighting’s Draper family inspire mid-century modern classic designs. Polished detailing and tubular forms contribute to an authentic style. (P4719-104)

New Classic is a very fresh take on traditional styling. Think of a classic urn-shaped lamp adorned with an updated finial or finish. It’s not an over-the-top fussy traditional look but, rather, an elegant and sophisticated – yet livable – look. New Classic pieces work well with antique elements that may adorn a home.

Offering upscale, traditional design – with a touch of elegance – Dazzle bath and vanity options with a Brushed Nickel finish is an example of a New Classic design that is ideal for use in today’s monochromatic and refined interiors. With a typical shade profile, a bedazzled glass frit inside creates an inviting shimmer. (P3576-09)

Natural earth organic brings “the outdoors inside” in an updated way that shouldn’t be confused as rustic. Accessories that have branch inspired accents – whether comprised of actual branches or materials made to look like branches – will be seen in home décor settings. Mixed metals continue to be prevalent. The craftsmanship of sculpted glass in this natural earth organic fixture defines the Legend Collection. Smooth on the outside, with a subtle, natureinspired pattern on the inside, this elegant fixture appears to come alive when illuminated. Slightly oversized shades complement the arching arms. (P4270-20)

FOCUS ON SMALL ACCESSORIES TO CHANGE YOUR LOOK WITH THE SEASONS To change your style throughout the year, focus on small accessories – such as throw pillows – that incorporate seasonal design accents. You can also layer several small rugs to create a unique area rug. This is less expensive than purchasing a larger rug and can also serve to bring in fall colors to your room’s design. Also, sconces are coming back as important accents, oftentimes replacing nightstand lamps. It’s a great way to maximize space, especially in more condensed room settings.

Consider changing out small accessories, such as accent pillows, to reflect the current season in your home décor. Progress Lighting’s Swing collection shown above. (P4744-20)

A LOOK AT LIGHTING Jenny emphasized the importance of LED lighting and shared how her team challenges themselves to convey what the benefits mean to consumers. The functionality and shape of the LED source can create designs that have never been possible. It’s exciting and it’s going to take people a while to understand how versatile the designs can be.

Our Endorse lantern celebrates the traditional form of a gas-powered coach light – with illumination from a modern source. A die-cast aluminum, powder coated frame creates an intriguing visual effect with clear beveled glass. (P6056-3130K9)

To add a decorative element in the lantern, a fluted frosted glass column is offered as an accessory to create a candlelike appearance. The replaceable LED source features energy savings and low-maintenance benefits. With 16 live-at-market daily editions, a web site that is updated several times daily, regular e-newsletters featuring news and hot products, as well as special market e-editions and breaking news; Home Accents Today is much more than a monthly magazine. If you aren’t currently subscribing to Home Accents Today, we recommend you consider their content. Jenny says that, in the future, they will begin to focus on peripheral categories, such as hardware, wallpaper and window coverings that also serve the home fashion industry. Decorative post, hanging and wall lanterns can be easily installed to brighten your outdoor areas. LED LIGHTING IS A HIGHLY ENERGY EFFICIENT SOLUTION THAT OFFERS MANY BENEFITS FOR OUTDOOR LIVING. Not only can installing LED fixtures lower your energy bill, but also the longevity of LED technology makes them a very lowmaintenance addition. No need to go through the hassle of changing bulbs when these sources last for decades. Plus, improved color temperature options provide a nice warm, inviting glow to illuminate exteriors.

DAY DESIGNER IN THE LIFE OF A

AN INSIDE LOOK AT OUR SENIOR DESIGNER, JAMES THOMAS

Casual Living recently took an up-close-and-personal look at the life of Progress Lighting Senior Product Designer James Thomas. And now, we get to reap the benefits of that interview by sharing all the details with you! From his morning routine to sources of inspiration to maintaining work-life balance, enjoy a behind the scenes peek into the life of a designer – and not just any designer – our very own, James Thomas. How do you get started each morning? I have always been a morning person, so I start my days early…at 5:30 am. I have a roughly 15 minute exercise routine consisting of push-ups, crunches, leg lifts, and stretches that I do before anything else. After that, I brew a cup of coffee and spend about half an hour reading, writing, or sketching while the rest of my family is sleeping and the house is still and quiet. By 6:15, everyone else in the house is getting up, and we start the daily routine of showering, packing lunches, eating breakfast and all of the other steps involved in preparing for school and work. What’s your routine as you work through the day? I am most creative in the mornings, so I like to sketch and work on new designs as soon as I arrive at the office (around 8:00). There is always a temptation to answer email first thing in the morning, but I find that I am much more productive if I focus on new designs first, and then wait until after lunch to respond to emails and follow up on my projects that are in process. My best work happens at the drawing table where I can think with a pencil in hand and freely sketch new ideas. I like to keep my drawing table and computer desk separate so that I am not tempted to check email or look up something on 6

the internet while I am in the “flow” of concept sketching. Once I have an idea that I like in the sketch stage, I can scan it and move to the computer for refinement, either quickly in Photoshop, Rhino (the 3d modeling package that we use) or AutoCAD. Sometimes I go back and forth with a design… starting with a rough thumbnail sketch, refining the size and proportions a bit in CAD, then printing and sketching by hand before refining again digitally. As much as I like computer modeling and rendering, the creative part of my brain is more engaged when I am sketching with pencil on paper compared to typing on a keyboard or moving a mouse. If I spend half of my time at work on the board drawing, I leave feeling energized, but if I spend most of the day staring at a screen, I feel mentally drained by late afternoon. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? I look for inspiration everywhere. Art, architecture, furniture, fashion, jewelry, nature…really anything can spark an idea for a new design. You never know when or where ideas will come, so I often carry a sketchbook to quickly capture them before I forget. I recently saw an interview with filmmaker David Lynch in which he referred to the incomplete ideas that pop into one’s head as “beautiful gifts”. I like that analogy. The process of

“ART, ARCHITECTURE, FURNITURE, FASHION, JEWELRY, NATURE … REALLY ANYTHING CAN SPARK AN IDEA FOR concept sketching is the way for me to compile those random A NEW DESIGN.” - JAMES THOMAS fragments of ideas that come from somewhere into new and whole designs.

What’s the timeframe for development? It varies quite a bit, but I am often working on designs for products that are close to a year away from introduction. The design process from rough sketch to approved prototype can range from a few weeks to a few months, but after the bulk of my initial design work is complete, it takes time for others to finalize engineering drawings, set pricing, photograph samples for the catalog, and take care of all of the other steps required to get the fixtures in production and ready to ship to customers. Sometimes, it can be a challenge to design a fashion driven product that won’t be introduced for a year, but that is why it is important for a designer to understand market trends, and have a strong idea of where things are going. Have you been able to balance your time to make room for family and/or hobbies? Absolutely! I make time for both, and honestly, I don’t think I would be a good designer if I didn’t. If I don’t get enough exercise, or feel unhappy for any reason, the quality of my work definitely suffers. I believe that a designer must draw inspiration from positive personal experiences, so focusing on work all of the time would be counterproductive. One specific way that I am able to make time for family and hobbies is by combining them. Whether it is hiking with my kids, or mountain biking with my wife, I love to spend quality time outside with my family. Fall 2015 Experience Progress

GUEST DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

RICHARD GACEK TALKS LOCAL TIES, OPEN SPACES AND CHANGING LIGHTING WITH THE SEASONS.

R

ichard Gacek, Allied ASID, Owner and Principal Designer of Pennsylvania-based Gacek Design Group, recalls his early childhood years exploring the natural surroundings and local structures in the Boston area, while paying close attention to how building environments were constructed and designed. So it’s no surprise that he continues to realize the importance of nature-inspired details as he designs residential settings for his customer base. We asked him to share his thoughts on what we’ll see more of the home design scene for the rest of 2015 and beyond, as well as advice on how quick changes in home accents can lead to improvements for the fall season. What home design trends will be most popular for Fall 2015? We’re seeing more and more compact spaces across all styles of homes – from multifamily to single family homes to even apartments. As a space gets smaller, we use simple strategies to make the most out of these settings. Designing with clean lines, linear lights and open spaces helps achieve an inviting effect for even the smallest of areas. We will also see a reinterpreted twist of “bringing the outdoors in” by incorporating natural materials that are specific to the local environment. Bringing natural materials from the surrounding area will be tied in through the use of clean lined interiors. It’s an exciting way to differentiate home settings. How does lighting impact your fall décor?

About Gacek Design Group. Founded in 2005, Gacek Design Group is owned and operated by Richard Gacek, a 28 year veteran of interior design and architectural consulting. As Principal Designer, Richard is well known for blending natural elements with timeless and classic design. His vision resonates today with projects that range from a classic and innovative apartment design in Paris to a 22,000 square foot estate in Bucks County, PA.

Gacek Design Group is behind the lovely settings that can be seen in the Legacy of Mountain Lakes, luxurious townhome communities in Mountain Lakes, NJ. We see several examples of Richard’s trend advice, including decorating with clean lines, natureinspired materials and accent lighting in this awe-inspiring open space.

Lighting is just as important as anything else in the home, if not more than other decor items. As a decorative fixture or statement, lighting is very impactful. Light fixtures can serve as statement pieces or complimentary pieces. For example, there is recessed lighting above my conference room table, but I also have decorative sconces around the perimeter of my conference room. It’s a peripheral statement to keep your mind moving around the space. For the smaller spaces, lighting can be used to make areas feel larger. Accent lighting –especially sconces – is important and can be used as strategically placed elements in smaller settings. Finally, when dealing with an open floor plan in a kitchen, I like to select one pendant so that the sight line view can go straight to a focal point, such as the chef. So, there are fewer lights, but they are more strategically placed.

8

What are creative ways to change up the look of your space with lighting as seasons change? For decorative fixtures, it can be as simple as just changing the shades. Alternatively, you can also remove a shade and change the bulb. By playing off the seasonal aspects and making minor changes, individuals can create warm spaces in the fall and winter with exposed bulbs. Then for the spring and summer, I’d suggest choosing a crisp shade and adding an LED lamp. Light output changes the whole tone and feel of a room. I would do this over something more specific, such as adding a tassel or other general accessory.

LAYERED LIGHTING 101 HOW TO PROPERLY LIGHT A ROOM FOR BOTH STYLE AND FUNCTION

DESIGN TIP: For recessed lighting, consider the size of your fixtures to determine appropriate spacing. A common rule is that four-inch fixtures should generally be placed at least four feet apart and six-inch fixtures about six feet apart. (A variety of recessed sizes and options available)

THE KEY TO A GOOD LIGHTING PLAN IS A LAYERED APPROACH THAT COMBINES THREE TYPES OF LIGHT: AMBIENT, TASK AND ACCENT LIGHTING. CERTAIN FIXTURES LEND THEMSELVES TO EACH CATEGORY, AND JUST THE RIGHT COMBINATION CAN BRING YOUR HOME TO LIFE. Ambient lighting provides an area with overall illumination. Also known as general lighting, it radiates a comfortable level of brightness without glare and allows you to see and walk about safely. Ambient lighting can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, as well as recessed or track lights. Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting plan.

Accent lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of an interior design scheme, it is used to draw the eye to key features such as houseplants, paintings, sculptures and other focal points of a room. Accent lighting can also be used for exterior applications to highlight the texture of a brick wall, window treatments or outdoor landscaping.

Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, cooking, or playing games. It can be provided by direct pendant lighting, low-hanging track lights and under cabinet lighting. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows, while bringing the source of light to exactly where you need it.

To be effective, accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting surrounding it. Accent lighting is usually provided by recessed and track lighting or wall-mounted picture lights.

When determining the best applications for task lighting, consider the function of the room – what activities will you be performing that require direct lighting? The rooms where task lighting is imperative are the kitchen (such as above counter lighting to enhance kitchen safety when using knives, stovetop, etc.), and the bathroom (where you need adequate light to complete everyday grooming tasks such as shaving or putting on make-up). 10

Depending on the application, the same fixture style can be a fit for all three categories of lighting. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and move away from traditional molds when it comes to creating a layered lighting plan. Try a chandelier in the bathroom, pendants in the living room or a recessed fixture in the shower. The most important thing is that you love the layout and design of your home and are able to perform everyday tasks with simplicity and ease. For more tips visit progresslighting.com/blog

DESIGN TIP: One of the most versatile fixtures, pendants, can be used for accent applications, especially to highlight favorite pieces on tables and shelves. Select a pendant style that reflects your decor. Modern pendants made of glass exude sleekness, while a shaded mini-pendant offers a more classic look. (Clayton Collection shown)

DESIGN TIP: Under cabinet fixtures are very functional additions for turning your counter tops into usable workspaces. Under cabinet lighting is available in a variety of options for different applications – including LED, puck lights, linear lights and tape lights. (Madison Collection shown)

Q&A

GUEST DESIGNER

AN INTERVIEW WITH DY LYNNE DABNEY OF DY LYNNE DÉCOR

A

fter learning more about the emphasis the Ferguson team in San Antonio places on designer-driven conversations, Progress Lighting spoke with Dy Lynne Dabney, interior design and owner of Dy Lynne Décor – to get another perspective on this exciting market. Dy Lynne Décor is a South Texas-based design firm with a high presence in model home planning and design. When asked about the importance of lighting, Dy Lynne says that it elevates the impression of a home, while making any space more sophisticated. In fact, when working with higher end clients, Dy Lynne says that she knows the design will be completely centered around lighting within a home. Dy Lynne took the time to update us on her most recent projects, with a closer look at how lighting helps her achieve her clients’ visions. Q: WHAT CONSIDERATIONS DO YOU TAKE INTO MIND WHEN SELECTING THE LIGHTING FOR A PROJECT? HOW IMPORTANT IS LIGHTING TO A PROJECT? A: Lighting is one of the top things that I ask my clients to consider at the onset of the project. I want them to see lighting in a different way – and that it plays a prominent role in design. While task and function are both important elements in design, decorative lighting fixtures – such as chandeliers or pendants – are beautiful and serve as a focal point within a room.

12

Lighting is a big deal. I have a chandelier in my own living room and not a ceiling fan – even in the San Antonio heat. I’ll suffer for the beauty and put the fan in the corner! Q: DESCRIBE THOUGHTS ON HOW YOU APPROACH IDENTIFYING WHERE LIGHTING NEEDS TO GO IN A HOME. One of the first things I’ll do is an electrical walk through a home. I’ll think about lighting when I enter a room or while going down a hallway and ask questions, such as “Is this space too dark?” You want to get it right in the beginning. Sometimes there will be a conversation about an area – for example over an island – where we just don’t know whether or not to hang one large linear light or maybe opt for two pendants or five mini-pendants. That’s when I will ask the electrical contractor to run some wire for me and leave it loose until we settle on a solution. Sometimes, it’s a balancing act. For example, if a breakfast nook has elaborate lighting, then you’ll need to scale back for the kitchen island – or vice versa. There is so much versatility when designing with light fixtures, particularly pendants. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON LED? I love LED. It really is the truest light we have to work with and is amazingly close to being as natural as possible. If I didn’t have my LED undercabinet lighting, I wouldn’t be able to see the crumbs on my counter!

Image courtesy of Sara White Photography

LED technology is easier to sell than it used to be because my customers have heard more abut the benefits and they see the value in it. The color output also provides a variety of aesthetics to design with – you can offer a pure white LED output or a range of LED amber tones. Here in San Antonio, we still have many homes with a Tuscan Old World style (featuring warm tones) so they’d have to choose an LED that produces a little softer light output. Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE PROGRESS LIGHTING PRODUCTS?

2

I also love a classic cage design and use the Piedmont (2) family frequently. For a more transitional look, I like to design with Ashbury (3). I also love Kiss (4) and Fresnel (5). They offer a casual elegance but with a certain amount of fun. The newer collections Progress Lighting has introduced have helped us accommodate a variety of home styles… I’m pretty much a junkie for all things design!

I work on a lot of renovation projects for older homes. My clients are trying to update their spaces, while still achieving a livable lifestyle.

LIGHTING TRENDS THAT ENHANCE

OUTDOOR LIVING

T

he 2015 Houzz and Home survey reported that three in five Houzz homeowners who renovated in 2014 upgraded their outdoor spaces or structures (62%). There’s no shortage of data that shows the increasing desire for homeowners to have beautiful exterior areas with high livability. One way to bring your outdoor spaces to life – and extend them over multiple seasons – is to beautifully illuminate the outside of your home.

Once I was given blue prints for a home and had free reign on what to offer for the home. The only requirement was that it had to look unique. With that, a new way of presenting a lighting package was born and the mix & match look has just taken off among several other projects - and the customers love it! That’s very rewarding. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF YOUR POSITION? My favorite thing is that one day is never like the other. There’s never a dull moment and I am encouraged to think on my own to handle the several tasks presented. WHAT HIDDEN TALENT ARE YOU ABLE TO USE IN YOUR JOB? So much has to be accomplished daily for the channels of business I work with, meeting the time frames of shipments and closing of orders on a day to day basis. WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? At the end of a day knowing I did what was best for our company but also the companies we do business with makes me feel satisfied. It is a great partnership that rewards me daily. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ABOUT PROGRESS LIGHTING? Progress Lighting invests in their employees.
