SIMPLE LIGHTING UPDATES THAT
MAKE A BIG IMPACT If you are feeling the urge to make improvements in your home, but not ready to commit to an entire renovation, look no further than lighting. Known as “the jewelry of the home,” lighting is versatile and flexible – a great combination when making updates to your favorite spaces.
CURATION VERSUS MATCHING
A carefully curated collection of home accents that are mixed and matched create fluidness throughout a home – and tends to occur more in higher end, luxurious environments. Don’t feel the need to match lighting collections throughout each room! It’s more about making a statement in a space.

Design Tips
N
ashville-based designer Marcia Knight, ASID has enjoyed a career in the residential design community that spans several decades with client relationships that have lasted just as long. She’s worked with clients on projects during all stages of the design process, as well as projects for their children and even grandchildren! We caught up with Marcia to get her thoughts on trends, the importance of a good lighting design and her upcoming projects this year.
How do you incorporate trends into a home setting?
I very much enjoy working with clients during the planning stages of building a house and/or renovating. When we start at the beginning, we can work together to identify what they really want - what their lifestyle needs and requires.
M
My advice is to start with a good foundation – with high quality finishes, furnishings and lighting. Once a solid design has been set, it’s easy to incorporate items that emulate current “trends” through the use of smaller accessories. For examples, pillows, accent rugs and artwork work to freshen up an area – and can easily be interchanged with similar items as trends come and go.
MARCIA’S TIP NO. 1 GO BEYOND THE CEILING Many people still consider overhead lighting as the only thing to include when illuminating a room. In order to create a lighting plan, it’s important to analyze the existing space and determine the different layers of lighting that are needed – beyond close-to-ceiling fixtures. Multiple light fixtures play a role in a layered lighting design. • Chandeliers, pendants and sconces offer pretty decorative lighting options • Undercabinet lighting, bedside sconces and floor and table lamps serve as examples of task lighting • Accent lighting – such as recessed and track lighting – highlights architectural details or artwork • Recessed downlights provide ambient or general lighting

Design Tips
MARCIA’S TIP NO. 2 GET READY FOR NEW SEASONS When the seasons change, the natural light available also starts to shift. Therefore, it’s nice to find ways to bring a warm glow inside the home even after you lose daylight. Some ways you can achieve this include: • Place LED votive lights and candles throughout different rooms. • Use candle clusters to add a wonderful amber glow that is warm and inviting. Dim the lights throughout the home to provide a nice, soft ambiance that is welcoming and relaxing. This can be easily accomplished by adding dimmers in popular areas in your house. I also like to change small accessories that incorporate seasonal elements – such as decorative throws and accent pillows. Invite Collection, Image: Beazer Homes
How has lighting technology changed to enhance your design projects?
I love working with the new LED tape strips. So many of the previous options were very cumbersome, which required designers to plan far ahead to incorporate into their projects. The ease of LED tape strips accommodate a variety of applications, including under cabinets, inside cabinets, as well as lining display cases and bookshelves. Plus, they offer energy efficient benefits.
M
What is an exciting project you are currently working on?
I’m working with a family to renovate their ranch-style home – that includes opening up their kitchen floor plan and adding several bathrooms and bedrooms – to better reflect their lifestyle. While these areas are being renovated, we can incorporate layers of lighting to maximize the use of each space.
M
10
ExperienceProgress
And, because they like to cook with their four children, it’s especially important to consider the amount of task lighting that will be needed. Especially in the kitchen when the children are helping to prepare meals! What has your experience been with the Progress Lighting brand?
Progress Lighting is a very easy company to work with. They offer an excellent range of design styles and price ranges, which helps when prioritizing budgets. I also love how they are staying current with new design factors and technology, such as the amount of LED options that are available. With aesthetic and functional benefits, it’s an easier conversation for me to encourage my clients to replace lights or add LED options, while benefiting from energy savings features.

old, exotic and vibrant, Bohemian design is an enticing global movement that has heavily influenced today’s most on-trend interior settings. olors are also paired with intricate geometric designs that contribute to the exciting nature of this style. Mixing patterns is accepted and encouraged, especially with pillows, rugs and ottomans. Decorative tile work is also commonly used in Bohemian interiors, many of which embrace the quatrefoil shape. Large mirrors or reflective mirrored surfaces can complete the look.
BOLD GEOMETRIC PATTERNS A
s with any interior space, lighting plays a key role in completing your intended style. With Bohemian design, light fixtures double as distinctive sculptural works of art that serve as visual focal points even when not illuminated. Lanterns finished in bronze, copper and wrought iron are particularly popular. Hang artistic pendants at varying heights in place of a traditional chandelier for the perfect Bohemian touch to your home.

LIGHTING TRENDS IN 3 MINUTES! An interview with Better Homes & Gardens and Progress Lighting
I
n a recent interview conducted by Better Homes and Gardens editor Samantha Hart, David Peek, Progress Lighting’s Director of Product Development, shared insight on three lighting trends that are hitting the residential design scene. Tune in!

1
Lighting as a Functional Work of Art
Lighting is no longer the secondary player in the room. It can serve as a focal point or functional work of art. According to David Peek, homeowners are recognizing that lighting is a beautiful way to add personality to their home to make it more distinctive. It offers something you can’t achieve with other accessories – through light, contrast and reflection.
Interview
2
Lighting Used in Unexpected Ways
David Peek also shared that the use of pendants in lieu of chandeliers is a fun trend popping up in residential interiors. Positioning multiple pendants above a dining table adds drama to a space. Decorators are also using pendants in bedrooms over nightstands as an alternative to a table lamp to light the room.

Bold Designs That Make a Statement
When asked what his number one piece of advice for homeowners who are new to the lighting space, David Peek said “be bold.” Lighting is one of the easiest ways to infuse your space with personality. And luckily, lighting isn’t a decision that you have to live with for the rest of your life. Your tastes will change in a few years – and your lighting can change right along with you!

hen Lee and Liz Lowry learned they were pregnant after just a few short months of marriage, they knew it was time to kick their home remodel plans into high gear.
The couple had recently purchased a quiet 1920s bungalow style home in the heart of a young, trendy neighborhood in Charlotte, N.C. - which they were also sharing with Liz’s two stepchildren and mother. While the community-driven area is what caused the couple to pull the trigger on the home buy, with just two bedrooms, one small “scary” bathroom (with a pull chain jelly jar light) and the Lowry’s expanding family – the couple needed to make some changes. THE JEWELRY OF THE HOME An open-concept dining area, positioned just off the kitchen, was convincingly one of the most outstanding areas of the home. “The Flourish chandelier has these soft amber shades, crystals and a warm hand rubbed bronze. It ties in the dark colors in the fireplace and really unites the space,” commented Vicki. “It’s the jewelry,” added Liz. “I don’t always think of Progress as a brand with such detailed or designer oriented pieces, but this is one of my favorite focal points of the home.”

The kitchen displays a beautiful layered lighting design with LED recessed cans and the Fresnel pendants above the island. “I was surprised at how seamlessly the LED and incandescent lights coordinated with one another,” said Liz. “The color and quality makes it easy to incorporate more energy efficient lights in your home.”
THE BLENDING OF ELEMENTS The master bath took on a classic, original style with modern updates. The black and white tile floor speaks to the home’s traditional charm. Big, bold
mosaics in the shower and the Fortune chandelier bring in a contemporary feel. Contrasting pale apple green walls mimic the vibrant color scheme carried throughout the house. The laundry room greets you with a bright coral hue, a black washer and dryer and Progress Lighting’s eye-catching Bingo collection. “I wanted to do something crazy. No one likes doing laundry, but the Bingo light makes it fun,” said Liz. While certain areas are more contemporary, the exterior of the home maintains the old, charming style that defines the

THE RETURN
For the last several years, the dining room seemed to be one of the least popular areas of the home. 34

Dining Room
S
ure, a homeowner still technically needed a formal dining room as part of their house plan for re-sale value. However, the average family seemed to be only using this space during a few special occasions – such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and a handful of other holidays or times for celebration – and then ignoring it for the rest of the year. Additionally, with the popularity of breakfast nooks and kitchen islands, more families were happy to repurpose dining rooms to use for other activities – playrooms, home offices and libraries.
But it seems that the dining room could be making a comeback in homes across America. As we continue to incorporate access to social media channels, entire television seasons and 24hour news cycles into our daily lives, there’s an increasing desire for us to have a space where we can just use to “unplug” and connect with friends and family on an intimate level. Could a dining room offer a place that sparks conversation, while temporary shielding us from accessing our smart phones? We think so!
Caress Collection, Image: West Point Homes
Use colors that you naturally gravitate towards. Hues that make you happy, calm or energized will allow you to spend several hours enjoying different topics of discussion.
TIP
A neutral color palette is gaining momentum in the residential design world – especially in dining room spaces. Most people feel comfortable in neutral settings and find it easy to live with.

A confluence of materials – forged iron, polished wood, pottery and glass – can reside in harmony. The range also provides desirable contrast in texture and finish.
Take note of the room’s natural framework. The proportions of the space will create a frame for your furniture and accessories – and, ultimately, for your guests’ experiences.
TIP

PENDANTS
Clayton Collection
Available in a plethora of shapes, sizes and styles, pendants offer endless design options, while providing all-purpose illumination, task lighting and accent lighting. Not only are pendants a classy style accent, but they also contribute to a functional and inviting layered lighting design. Keep these purposes in mind when using pendants to light a variety of rooms in your home:
All-purpose Lighting
Task Lighting
Space pendants throughout the room for overall lighting. The larger the area, the bigger the pendant light should be.
Focus pendant lights on a specific work area, such as over a sink or desk area. One small pendant may be sufficient.

Accent Lighting Highlight specific areas or accent pieces with pendants to create interest and depth to your design.
TIP The pendants lined over the kitchen are not only dreamy – they are functional, too. The even illumination they provide prevents dark spots over the work space to prevent accidents in the kitchen.
Additionally, pendants can help further your unique design taste. Select a pendant style that reflects your home’s characteristic decor. For example, modern pendants made of glass exude sleekness, while glass orbs present a retro look. Choose a style that matches your home design and meets your lighting needs. The appeal of pendant lighting is that there is a style, size and price point for every design plan. Explore options by Progress Lighting to update your space with pendant lighting.

MEET MARQUE / a statement fixture from Progress Lighting’s Design Series
The main source of inspiration for this stunning fixture was structural steel architecture - think skyscrapers, towers, and bridges! In addition to built structures, the Marque design was influenced by the faceted and geometric patterns that is increasingly seen in today’s art, interiors, fashion, and graphic design.
03
But how do you get from inspiration to being featured in The New American Home? The initial sketch for this fixture featured an X pattern frame with an apex at the cross point. The basic outer truss idea was the core of the design, but it quickly evolved into an elongated tapered form with a vertically asymmetrical cross pattern.
From rough product thumbnail sketches, the designer builds the frame’s elements using 3D software. A computer model served as a rotatable dynamic “sketch that allowed the product designer, James Thomas, to work out the proportions and refine the intersection details.
The end result: A fixture that features an open feel, with a functional center core and a lighter truss-like outer frame to define the shape.

WHY CHOOSE OUTDOOR LED? THEY’RE SAFE. Because LEDs do not produce an exceptional amount of heat like other landscape and outdoor options, homeowners can be at ease knowing their outdoor LED lights will illuminate their property with minimum fire risk. Additionally, children playing in the yard are not at risk for burns due to the low temperature compared to other light sources that can get very hot.
THEY SAVE ENERGY. The energy saving benefits are even more applicable to exterior settings since outdoor lights are often left on for hours at a time.
THEY’RE LOW-MAINTENANCE. Outdoor lights can be difficult (and time consuming) to replace, especially for lights on a roof. An LED lamp can last up to 20 years, making LEDs an extremely low maintenance solution.

2 DOWN LIGHTS Shine LED down lights on areas ideal for outdoor entertaining. Recessed LED fixtures create a comfortable environment and add to your home’s safety and security.
3 SPOTLIGHTS LED spotlights can be used to highlight architecture, gardens and key focal points of your landscape design. Spotlights also add visual intrigue to exterior areas, boosting curb appeal.

UNIQUELY SWEET STYLE
Tech Insight
In a children’s bedroom, the feature of the room is the lighting. The bubble-like Bingo fixture by Progress Lighting inspired Doris to create a candythemed room, complete with hanging DIY candy pieces and candy-painted stripes on the ceiling for a fun, vibrant twist. The overall white spaces of the room allow for simplicity, while the accents of orange and pink punctuate the room creating a highly memorable space.

DINING ROOM For the luxury homeowner, the dining room has real appeal. “Entertaining and dinner parties are important in this sized home – so the dining room is a must. We went with a table that very comfortably seats 10 guests,” said Doris.

MAKING A GRAND ENTRANCE “When a potential buyer walks into a home, they decide if they have a love affair with the property within the first minute. The entry is the first meeting between the buyer and the home, so the design is critically important,” explained Doris. Boasting a two-story foyer with stunning double turned staircases, the visitor’s first impression of the Dutchess model is one of luxury and extravagance from floor to ceiling.
This home was styled specifically for an affluent buyer deciding to upgrade to a larger residence, and settle on a home that is their ultimate purchase. The design must tap into their mind’s eye and bring their dream home vision to life. 58

WALL PANELS “The wall trim details give the foyer that energetic, transitional feel. Without this feature, it would be a much more formal, traditional space.”

LIGHTING “The lighting is like the arrow that draws your eye up in the space. You wouldn’t recognize the high volume of the space without the multiple lanterns because they are so cool and unusual.”
FLOORING “The marble and wood floor runs from the entryway until it breaks into the family room. The combination of materials is unusual and intriguing. Treating the entire floor – and not just a part of it with a small inlay – creates a larger, more impactful look.”

The pendants are the jewelry for the space. They bring in a contemporary element that creates excitement because the combination is so unexpected.
THE HEART OF THE HOME A stunning gourmet kitchen with generous counter space, a large island and expansive breakfast area serves as the heart of the home. The design takes on a less is more approach, using fewer materials over a larger space to build contrast and intrigue. Mixed finishes contribute to the impactful nature of the kitchen. A dark island is juxtaposed with light, perimeter cabinets that create a bright atmosphere. The stone wall treatment and backsplash provide added texture, while the farmhouse sink contributes to a casual style. “The pendants are the jewelry for the space. They bring in a contemporary element that creates excitement because the combination is so unexpected, said Doris.

A MASTER BEDROOM RETREAT
An extravagant coffered ceiling adds dimension, volume and architectural interest – all while contributing to a greater perceived value – in the master bedroom. The dark taupe walls and columns further the room’s rich and elegant appeal. Progress Lighting’s chandelier is a key focal point. “The most central part of this room is the Nissé chandelier hanging over the foot of the
bed,” said Doris. “If you look at the room without the fixture, it’s not nearly as exciting.” According to Doris, if outfitting your bedroom with a chandelier, dimension is hugely important. “The Nissé chandelier is perfect because it’s pretty wide, covering the vertical space, but it’s not very deep. You can use it with a nine or ten foot ceiling comfortably.”

WINE TASTING ROOM & SITTING AREA Every dream home needs areas that are perfect for entertaining – which is why Doris converted the conservatory space along the side of the house, typically used as a sunroom, into a special area for sharing drinks and memories with friends and family. “The room is very long, so we divided it into two areas using the Equinox fixtures to give the room a “center” and put a modern twist on a traditional room,” explained Doris. “The first area
is finished with big, cushy chairs and a leather ottoman to drink coffee, watch television or read. The second area features a table, eight bar stools and wine storage cabinets ideal for an intimate cocktail party.” Doris selected a neutral color palette, incorporating beiges, taupes and grays. She explained a neutral color scheme is very important for this target buyer, as it is very accepted in the most luxurious home designs. Doris
complements the neutrals with a lot of texture on surfaces and contrasting pops of accent colors, through furniture and accessories. According to Doris, the light fixtures are key to creating a comfortable, intimate setting. “The pendants take a very large room and create groupings that are cozy,” she said.
