A
sk designers and they will tell you: lighting is a key element in any well-designed space. How we choose to light a space relates to how we view all the elements within – so taking the time to decide how to place light in a room is definitely time well spent.
Chandeliers can make a statement in a room, as long as they are placed at the right height! We’ve learned from some of the best interior designers that there are general rules for how tall and wide a lighting fixture should be for its location.
6
ExperienceProgress
In this article, we’ll address several room settings and general rules for how to best install a chandelier.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES & SIZING GUIDELINES DINING • The table under the fixture should serve as a guide for selecting the right fixture for your space.
8' Ceiling
• Based on an 8’ ceiling, your fixture should hang between 30-34” above the table.
Less than 72" Table width minus 12"
• To calculate the correct width, start with the width of your table and subtract 12 inches. (For example, if your table is 42 inches wide, your chandelier should not be more than 30 inches wide.)
30 - 34"
84"
BEDROOM • Hang the chandelier over the center of the bed.
8' Ceiling
• Shorten the chain, so the bottom of the chandelier hangs seven feet above the floor.
7' Center
• For ceilings higher than nine feet, consider hanging a two-tier chandelier, so the room doesn’t overpower the chandelier. 01: Inspire Chandelier, Image: Micamy Design Studio 02: Invite Chandelier, Image: Mary DeWalt Design Group

Decorating with Chandeliers
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES & SIZING GUIDELINES CONT.
27.5" Tall Fixture
11' Ceiling
11' Ceiling x 2.5" = 27.5"
Minimum 84"
FOYERS • Ensure your chandelier is not lower than 84 inches from the floor as to not interfere with the door or people passing underneath. • For higher ceilings, consider a taller chandelier or select a more linear fixture design.
8
ExperienceProgress
• The rule of thumb is to accommodate 2.5 - 3 inches of chandelier height for each foot of ceiling height. For example, a standard 8-foot ceiling requires a chandelier that is 20-24 inches in height.

This yellow-green hue will soon be found in every item you can imagine, from fashion and graphic design to wedding colors and home décor. Although your house may already be festive with a different type of greenery for the summer season, we wanted to share our tips for using the new 2017 Pantone color of the year in your home and décor in celebration of the new year ahead!
“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
One easy way to use Greenery in your home is to break out the paint! Choose a whole room or accent wall to bring color to your spaces. Mix with other natural materials, like wood, to give an organic feel. 18

oes the thought of working from home get you down? Not with these beautiful and functional home office spaces! Try some of these quick tips to create a room of your own – and also learn from our friends at Micamy Design on how they approach home office designs. TIP 1 - Get a chair that is upholstered and comfortable to sit in instead of the typical office chair. TIP 2 - I always have fresh flowers on my desk. It brightens the spirit and makes me feel not as cooped up inside. If you don’t want to worry about always getting fresh flowers, get an orchid that will last.
– Vicki Payne, DIY Expert and Host of PBS’ For Your Home TIP 3 - Make use of the walls as workspaces – try adding whiteboard or chalkboard walls. – Robin Wilson, Robin Wilson Home
TIP 4 - My favorite tip for a home office is to paint the trim dark or black. It really changes the whole feel of the room and is easy and inexpensive to do. Plus it sets the study off as something different than a bedroom. TIP 5 - If building, don’t forget the floor plugs in the home offices! It looks great to place a desk in the middle of the room but doesn’t look so nice to have to run wires from a computer out to the wall. – Becky Cantrell, West Point Homes

Q&A WITH MICAMY DESIGN STUDIO ON DESIGNING HOME OFFICES
WALL PANELS “The wall trim details give the foyer that energetic, transitional feel. Without this feature, it would be a much more formal, traditional space.”
How do you create a productive, inspiring work space for home offices? First, we focus on the desk to provide a functional working surface and second is storage. We love designing built-ins as a backdrop of the office, which provides additional storage and surface space for printers and such. What fabrics, colors, or textures are popular to incorporate in a home office? Micamy Design Studio’s principal has been a commercial Interior Designer for over 20 years and has designed thousands of square feet for office tenants. This helps us design out of the box home offices. We like specifying reflective surfaces, which helps make the space feel larger. Continued on next page.

We usually angle the desk towards the natural light from the windows for optimal lighting.”
Q&A CONTINUED What about lighting for the home office? How do you make sure the space looks great – but there is enough light where you need it for computer time, sketching, reading, etc.? We love using a statement chandelier in the office above a stately desk. Designer tip: we usually angle the desk towards the natural light from the windows for optimal lighting. What are some ways you can quickly update a home office? Adding a built in is the quickest way to really elevate your home office, whether it’s a built in desk, or free standing shelves.
