EDITOR Where do I start? These last six months have been ridiculously fun. Beginning with this issue of Experience Progress —redesigned and reimagined! To start, let me just put it out there — I’m a magazine and fashion enthusiast. From my earliest childhood memories, I’ve been obsessed with both. So it’s only natural that when I joined Progress Lighting, I figured out a way to marry the two. I just had to, and it was crazy simple. Lights can totally transform a space. Oscar de la Renta said it best, “The most important thing? Perfect lighting at all times.” And just like fashion, if your taste changes next season…poof — so can your lights!

T
his spring, interior design professionals from around the globe came together to explore, learn and collaborate at the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world – the High Point Market. The wildly successful bi-annual event attracts the industry’s best of the best – from world famous designers and celebrities to respected manufacturers and brands. Our team was thrilled to join in on the fun as spectators at this esteemed event. We are excited to share with you all that we learned along the way.
BOLD COLOR AND PATTERN GUARANTEE VISUAL APPEAL IN TODAY’S INTERIORS. Bright pops of color decked the walls, pillows and artwork of many showrooms at High Point. A bohemian, tribal look showed up in many areas – while inviting floral patterns dominated others. Either way, color is in!

LIGHTING CONTINUES TO BE THE JEWELRY OF THE HOME. It was evident that lighting is, more often than not, the crowning glory of a space. Lighting has the ability to completely transform the look and feel of your home. Artistic elements – such as handcrafted finishes and natural materials – were pervasive in lighting designs at this year’s market. Matte metals are also increasingly popular in lighting and home appliances.

ashville-based designer Marcia Knight, ASID has enjoyed a career in the residential design community that spans several decades with client relationships that have lasted just as long. She’s worked with clients on projects during all stages of the design process, as well as projects for their children and even grandchildren! We caught up with Marcia to get her thoughts on trends, the importance of a good lighting design and upcoming projects for 2016.
How do you incorporate trends into a home setting?
I very much enjoy working with clients during the planning stages of building a house and/or renovating. When we start at the beginning, we can work together to identify what they really want - what their lifestyle needs and requires.

My advice is to start with a good foundation – with high quality finishes, furnishings and lighting. Once a solid design has been set, it’s easy to incorporate items that emulate current “trends” through the use of smaller accessories. For examples, pillows, accent rugs and artwork work to freshen up an area – and can easily be interchanged with similar items as trends come and go.
MARCIA’S TIP NO. 1 GO BEYOND THE CEILING Many people still consider overhead lighting as the only thing to include when illuminating a room. In order to create a lighting plan, it’s important to analyze the existing space and determine the different layers of lighting that are needed – beyond close-to-ceiling fixtures. Multiple light fixtures play a role in a layered lighting design. • Chandeliers, pendants and sconces offer pretty decorative lighting options • Undercabinet lighting, bedside sconces and floor and table lamps serve as examples of task lighting • Accent lighting – such as recessed and track lighting – highlights architectural details or artwork • Recessed downlights provide ambient or general lighting

MARCIA’S TIP NO. 2 GET READY FOR NEW SEASONS
INTRODUCING THE NEW AND IMPROVED PROGRESS LIGHTING BLOG LAYOUT.
When the seasons change, the natural light available also starts to shift. Therefore, it’s nice to find ways to bring a warm glow inside the home even after you lose daylight. Some ways you can achieve this include: • Place LED votive lights and candles throughout different rooms. • Use candle clusters to add a wonderful amber glow that is warm and inviting.

How has lighting technology changed to enhance your design projects?
I love working with the new LED tape strips. So many of the previous options were very cumbersome, which required designers to plan far ahead to incorporate into their projects. The ease of LED tape strips accommodate a variety of applications, including under cabinets, inside cabinets, as well as lining display cases and bookshelves. Plus, they offer energy efficient benefits.

What is an exciting project you are currently working on?
I’m working with a family to renovate their ranch-style home – that includes opening up their kitchen floor plan and adding several bathrooms and bedrooms – to better reflect their lifestyle. While these areas are being renovated, we can incorporate layers of lighting to maximize the use of each space.

Dim the lights throughout the home to provide a nice, soft ambiance that is welcoming and relaxing. This can be easily accomplished by adding dimmers in popular areas in your house. I also like to change small accessories that incorporate seasonal elements – such as decorative throws and accent pillows.
And, because they like to cook with their four children, it’s especially important to consider the amount of task lighting that will be needed. Especially in the kitchen when the children are helping to prepare meals!

n our Designer interview with Marcia Knight (for the full article, see page 10), she addressed one of the most common mistakes people make when lighting a room. According to Marcia, many people still consider overhead lighting as the only thing to include when illuminating a room.
“Multiple light fixtures play a role in a layered lighting design,” she added. Our lighting solutions specialist, Anne Suggs, also recently addressed some “do’s and don’ts” to consider when it comes to lighting at a special “Be Bright” event at the Hubbell Lighting headquarters.

There are special things to consider when approaching the lighting in every room of your home. And with a little knowledge, the right lighting can make any design project less intimidating and more impactful. Let’s take a tour of the average home for some easy-to-remember advice for your next remodel or design project.

DINING ROOM ROOKIE MOVE // Don’t feel like you are limited in using just one pendant as a focal point for the dining room.
PRO TIP // Try multiple pendant groupings over a large dining room table. Mount the pendants 32” to 36” above the table height, so that guests can still see everyone while having enough light. Anne also suggests using recessed downlights or wall sconces to add more vertical light – to contrast the horizontal light of the pendant.
PRO TIP // Consider overcabinet lighting if you have at least 12 inches above your cabinets. Also, be sure to position directional spotlights in line with the edge of your countertop. Finally, Anne stresses the importance of selecting the right pendant to complement your kitchen.

Anne also reminded us that showers should have a recessed or surface mount fixture near the back wall – or corner of the shower.

ROOKIE MOVE // Don’t install any type of light that could give off glare in the bedroom. A very important factor to providing a calming atmosphere is that the room is free of glare. Also, avoid placing a downlight directly over the bed.
PRO TIP // Remember, a little light outdoors can go a long way, so be sure not to over light. Also, consider how the lighting will look from all vantage points in the yard. Anne suggests approaching lighting the back yard as you would the living room – and choose two to three focal features, such as a sculpture or trees, to light.
PRO TIP // Select a diffused light where you can’t see the source – so it’s not as difficult for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. “For the main overhead lighting in a bedroom, use an indirect fixture. Indirect lighting is inherently non-glary because it uses the ceiling as the main fixture,” said Anne. Prestwick Outdoor Collection

Lighting is no longer the secondary player in the room. It can serve as a focal point or functional work of art. According to David Peek, homeowners are recognizing that lighting is a beautiful way to add personality to their home to make it more distinctive. It offers something you can’t achieve with other accessories – through light, contrast and reflection.

David Peek also shared that the use of pendants in lieu of chandeliers is a fun trend popping up in residential interiors. Positioning multiple pendants above a dining table adds drama to a space. Decorators are also using pendants in bedrooms over nightstands as an alternative to a table lamp to light the room.

S
ure, a homeowner still technically needed a formal dining room as part of their house plan for re-sale value. However, the average family seemed to be only using this space during a few special occasions – such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and a handful of other holidays or times for celebration – and then ignoring it for the rest of the year. Additionally, with the popularity of breakfast nooks and kitchen islands, more families were happy to repurpose dining rooms to use for other activities – playrooms, home offices and libraries.
THE RETURN
But it seems that the dining room could be making a comeback in homes across America. As we continue to incorporate access to social media channels, entire television seasons and 24hour news cycles into our daily lives, there’s an increasing desire for us to have a space where we can just use to “unplug” and connect with friends and family on an intimate level. ccording to the US DOE’s Energy Information Administration, health care facilities account for 7% of electricity use by all commercial and institutional buildings. Additionally, lighting equipment represents as much as 42% of total electricity used in health care facilities. Despite the extraordinary costs associated with lighting systems, health care applications provide a unique set of challenges and opportunities, which given the lack of research funding, leaves a large separation between research and applied design. Despite the obvious benefits and in many cases unique, lighting practices implemented by health care providers and facility managers,
these efforts and their related benefits largely go unmeasured. This has resulted in the general deficiency of quantified benefits of “good lighting” and limited design guidance with respect to both common and specialized health care environments. For patient and health care professionals alike, patient experience, observation accuracy, procedure success, patient recovery and patient safety (slips, trips and falls, etc.) are of the utmost concern. Given the range in age of patients (newborn to geriatric), varying degree of patient mobility and duration of treatment and observation, lighting requirements vary greatly.

Since the degree of difficulty and resulting implications of visual tasks performed by patients are in sharp contrast to those performed by health care professionals, an extreme level of flexibility. The shift away from monolithic hospital centric campuses to an outpatient population-centric model is becoming evident. Some sources indicate that inpatient volumes are predicted to fall 5%, vs. 30% growth in outpatient volume. In recent years, the shift in the healthcare facility archetype has driven facility design away from predictable sterility and towards residential and hotel-like
interiors for an increased degree of patient comfort. This not only provides an atmosphere of recovery for the patient, but promotes a greater degree of family member and caretaker comfort and involvement throughout the recovery process. This has not only been shown to improve patient recovery but also to reduce the demand on overextended health care practitioners and staff.

Additionally, providing patients the ability to control or adapt patient room lighting through accessible lighting controls, many times directly from the patient’s bed, has been shown to provide positive benefits to the health and wellbeing of patients and foster a sense of independence. It is important to point out that for some patients, the simple act of flipping a switch or pressing a button may be an immensely complicated endeavor.
This makes the development of more advanced control systems using integrated technologies such as voice and gesture recognition very promising for disadvantaged patients. However, despite the understandable desire to promote patient-friendly interiors and access to lighting controls, these technologies can lead to reduced visual performance and visual fatigue for health practitioners if not implemented correctly.

hen Lee and Liz Lowry learned they were pregnant after just a few short months of marriage, they knew it was time to kick their home remodel plans into high gear.
The couple had recently purchased a quiet 1920s bungalow style home in the heart of a young, trendy neighborhood in Charlotte, N.C. - which they were also sharing with Liz’s two stepchildren and mother. “It’s all about admiring the beauty and glow of the filament.” Edison bulbs naturally bring forth a unique design appeal due to the attractive nature of the bulb’s filament or wire element within the lamp. Unlike incandescent sources that can produce a distracting glare, an Edison bulb operates at a lower Kelvin temperature that creates an inviting amber glow. Stefanie noted that today’s bulbs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to complement a range of fixture designs. According to Stefanie, the trend really took hold among designers and homeowners nearly a decade ago due to the attractive look of the bulb. As a result, manufacturers (like Progress Lighting)
began creating fixtures that are designed to highlight the uniqueness of Edison lamps. “LED Edison bulbs are growing in popularity.” Edison sources are also available in LED options for an energy efficient alternative that provides that same vintage look that homeowners desire. These sources operate at a cooler temperature for less energy consumption.

Because LEDs do not produce an exceptional amount of heat like other landscape and outdoor options, homeowners can be at ease knowing their outdoor LED lights will illuminate their property with minimum fire risk. An extravagant coffered ceiling adds dimension, volume and architectural interest – all while contributing to a greater perceived value – in the master bedroom. The dark taupe walls and columns further the room’s rich and elegant appeal. Progress Lighting’s chandelier is a key focal point. “The most central part of this room is the Nissé chandelier hanging over the foot of the
bed,” said Doris. “If you look at the room without the fixture, it’s not nearly as exciting.” According to Doris, if outfitting your bedroom with a chandelier, dimension is hugely important. “The Nissé chandelier is perfect because it’s pretty wide, covering the vertical space, but it’s not very deep. You can use it with a nine or ten foot ceiling comfortably.”

The most central part of this room is the Nissé chandelier...If you look at the room without the fixture, it’s not nearly as exciting.
Every dream home needs areas that are perfect for entertaining – which is why Doris converted the conservatory space along the side of the house, typically used as a sunroom, into a special area for sharing drinks and memories with friends and family. “The room is very long, so we divided it into two areas using the Equinox fixtures to give the room a “center” and put a modern twist on a traditional room,” explained Doris. “The first area
is finished with big, cushy chairs and a leather ottoman to drink coffee, watch television or read. The second area features a table, eight bar stools and wine storage cabinets ideal for an intimate cocktail party.” Doris selected a neutral color palette, incorporating beiges, taupes and grays. She explained a neutral color scheme is very important for this target buyer, as it is very accepted in the most luxurious home designs. Doris
complements the neutrals with a lot of texture on surfaces and contrasting pops of accent colors, through furniture and accessories. According to Doris, the light fixtures are key to creating a comfortable, intimate setting. “The pendants take a very large room and create groupings that are cozy,” she said.

t is very rare to find an employee who has been as loyal to their company as Rich D’Andrea. This year, he celebrates 50 years with Progress Lighting.
A normal day as Model Shop Supervisor means Rich manages brand modifications to fixtures the team is designing. He can fabricate and prototype just about anything. So what’s the biggest industry change that Rich has experienced over the last five decades? Like the rest of us, he’s seen a drastic shift toward LED sources, as a major accomplishment for the lighting industry. “For the brand, the biggest change I’ve experienced is what we are doing right now. All the talent we are adding. All the momentum we are building for new products and collections,” he said. “It’s an exciting time to be with Progress Lighting.”

What made you apply for a job at Progress Lighting more than 50 years ago?
I wanted to get into Progress Lighting because they are a big company—and even to this day they are doing amazing things. I started working in the assembly lines in Philadelphia but was always looking for a job in the model shop area. As soon as a job opened up, I applied for it and got it.

What keeps you motivated to come to work every day?
I enjoy doing what I’m doing. It’s different every day. Plus, I get to work with just about everyone—from people in the marketing department to the design team. It’s fun to work with so many talented people.

Do you make changes to your own lighting design in your home?
I have Progress Lighting all throughout my home, and I’m always looking for different fixtures to put in my house to make things look better. Of course, I have to confirm with my wife before I make any updates!

All my cruises have been great. But my favorite would have to be the cruise to Alaska.

What did you want to be when you were a child? L When I was a child I wanted

C I constantly strive to stay abreast of technology advancements in lighting as well as the ever-changing governmental regulations. As we endeavor to be good stewards of the environment, we want to offer the most energyefficient products possible. a wonderful group of people! Our design team is so creative and easy to get along with and the engineering and sales/marketing team is knowledgeable and on top of their game. Everyone is happy and more than willing to help with anything you may need. It makes all the difference to come into work each day knowing that each person in our company is doing their part to make Progress Lighting successful as a whole. What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?
hearing that a piece of marketing collateral I helped put together for a presentation won over a new business against one of our competitors. What did you want to be when you were a child? L I wanted to be a veterinarian
because I loved animals. Then I figured out I had a bad allergy to cats and dogs, so that dream quickly came to an end. I have always been creative and crafty and loved being on the computer, so as I got older I combined those two talents and decided to go to school to be a graphic designer. I have loved it ever since!

D The most rewarding aspect of my position is solving problems for our customers and account managers. I really enjoy being able to bring a new set of ideas to a problem, and creating a solution that satisfies everyone. It is very gratifying to be able to reach out to the customer and let them know that you have solved their problem. What is the hardest part of your job? D The hardest part of my job
is the constant reprioritizing of my work. There is always something that comes in marked as urgent, and I have to drop what I am doing and take
care of that issue immediately. Going down a to-do-list isn’t possible in this position because you rarely get to spend more than 30 uninterrupted minutes on any one thing. It definitely keeps you on your toes. How do you add value within your role? D I think my sense of urgency
is something that adds value. This is an incredibly fast paced industry where time is of the essence, so I do my best to get everything done as quickly as possible without making mistakes. I don’t believe in pushing things off or making people wait a minute longer than they have to, and I think people appreciate that.
