Dearest Mission CISD 2017 Superstar Graduates:
When you entered our doors over 12 years ago, our district made a vow to you and your parents: Mission CISD would ensure you were prepared for College, Careers, and Life. Your efforts and distinctions have made it another banner year for our district, as we reflect on the foundation we have helped you establish for your future success. This graduating class has students accepted to MIT, Princeton, Johns Hopkins University, top tier universities like Duke University, Baylor University, Rice University, St. Edward’s University, St. Mary’s University, UT Austin, and Texas A&M, as well as our local champions of educational opportunity for all: UTRGV and STC. Many of you have also chosen to serve our great Nation by entering our military, while earning college funds for your future. We salute you all! In Mission CISD we are devoted to “Unlocking Your Dreams”. Your academic preparedness for college, careers, and life gives you the needed training and tools to compete with anyone in the nation at the highest levels. Although you have the foundation to succeed in every endeavor, I want to challenge to “Keep the Fire Burning” and to fully engage in all the opportunities that a university, college, employment, or the military provides. You have already set a new standard for excellence! The class of 2017 earned 12,322 Dual Enrollment college credit hours during their high school careers. The College Board reports the average annual tuition for a four-year public college is $9,410 with an average cost per college credit hour of $313. Based upon this, the Mission CISD Class of 2017 saved $3,856,786 in college tuition costs. Your college hours, combined with your numerous awards in academic/athletic/fine arts competitions at the state and national levels, demonstrate to all that you are ready for your next challenge in any endeavor you choose. Our vision for you is to be a leader and a “successful citizen in your community.” Taking classes in a university or entering a career will not sharpen your skills as the next leader of our community. You are called to do more. Find organizations, clubs, fraternities, sororities, or nonprofit organizations that fit your interest - and become an active member. Once you join, work to learn all the intricacies of the organization, utilize what we have taught you to enhance the organization, and learn to lead others to reach their potential. Focusing beyond just schoolwork will enrich your entire university experience and allow you to transfer your learned skills to the workforce. Every employer wants a smart, committed, and trustworthy employee, who is committed to the community. By engaging with organizations, you will not only be changing the world for the better, you will have a leg up to attain the job of your dreams. You are the best and we want you to shine! MHS TOP THREE Mission High School class of 2017 is Roxanna Cortes. Rosanna is the daughter of Vicente and Maria Del Rosario Cortes. She has her sights set on medical school and hopes to become a pediatrician. This fall, Cortes will be attending the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, majoring in biology. She said she hopes to get in some family travel and camping over the summer. Cortes’ senior year has included participation in National Honor Society, HOSA. She has also completed her Certified Nurse Assistant certification. While Roxanna is looking forward to the increasing independence that comes with college life, and meeting new people, she said she will miss many friends after this year as everyone starts to go different directions. Cortes indicated she will also miss many of her teachers and counselors. Her advice to next year’s MHS senior class is to take advantage of all the opportunities they get and find time to en-
VMHS TOP THREE Texas A&M, starting with the new branch opening in McAllen and then transferring to College Station as his studies in Chemical Engineering proceed. One of his main goals for the summer is to complete what is needed to get his driver’s license. Shults says he is looking forward to the growth and change that comes with colege. His senior year has included: National Honor Society, UIL, Mu Alpha Theta, Masterminds, SeaPearch, and Science Bowl. His advice for next year’s seniors is not to procrastinate, and make sure to get all college and scholarship applications in on time. As classes begin this fall, Shults says he will miss many of the people from his high school activities and hopes those friendships continue into the future. The Third Ranking Student for the VMHS class of 2017 is Isaac Aguilera Martinez. He is the son of Juventi-
MCHS TOP THREE Book Club, and church. She sees her summer being filled with church related activities and allowing herself to take a break. Vanessa says she is looking forward to being able to focus on just college courses and not both college and high school courses that she has been at MCHS. She also indicated she is looking forward to more freedoms and the chance to see her brother on campus. Guerra says MCHS is such a small and tight-knit school that she knows she will miss the close, one-on-one relationships that come with that. She warns the class of 2018 against procrastination, and to never lose sight of the prize even if things seem to pile up on you. She says it is all worth it at the end. from pg 1 joy the special moments of their senior years. Rizalyn Joy Mestrallas Dela Torre is the Third Ranking Student for the Mission High School Class of 2017. She is the daughter of Wayne and Emilia Steinkuehler. The nursing program at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley is where Dela Torre is heading this fall. Her goal is to become a nurse practitioner. National Honor Society and the art club have been a part of her senior year. She also attained a Certified Nurse Assistant certification. A possible relocation and preparing for college will likely fill much of her summer. As she prepares for college, Dela Torre says she is looking forward to the additional freedoms that accompany becoming an adult. She says she will miss teachers and friends, and high school life in general. She says next year’s seniors should not slack off but enjoy their final year of high school as it goes by quickly.
from pg 1 no and Amalia Martinez. Martinez has his sights set on a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then possibly a Master’s Degree. His summer plans include a special summer program with MIT. Martinez’s senior year activities have included: National Honor Society, HOSA, BPA, Mu Alpha Theta, speech and debate, student council, SeaPerch, robotics, and Destination Imagination. Martinez says he is looking forward to the changing seasons associated with living in the northeastern part of the country and exploring the different cultures that come with college life. However, he knows he will miss everyone from his years at VMHS, both students and faculty. His advice to next year’s seniors includes not to stress too much, but to make sure they don’t drop the ball on the things that matter.
from pg 1 2017 is Citlali Hernandez. Citlali is the daughter of Maria Hernandez. This fall, she plans to continue studies at South Texas College, working towards Pre-Med. A phlebotomist or occupational therapist are both careers that sound interesting to her. Activities from church, National Honor Society, and the Book Club have kept her busy outside of studies. Hernandez said she plans to get some rest and also get more involved in church activities/ work over the summer. She said she is really looking forward to the whole experience of college life. The help and guidance of Mrs. Nogueras are what she said she will miss most this fall. Her advice for next year’s seniors is to try and find a good balance between school and life outside of school.

Mission Collegiate High School (MCHS) has received word that they earned a Bronze Medal from U.S. News & World Report in its annual ranking of high schools in the country. That places MCHS among the top 30 percent of public high schools eligible for ranking by the publication, states an school district press release that also said it marks the third year in a row that MCHS has earned this recognition. MCHS is also included in rankings for recognition among Texas high schools for the first time. The MCHS U.S. News & World Report data is available online, https://www.
usnews.com/education/besthigh-schools/texas/districts/ mission-cisd/mission-collegiate-high-school-146143. “We are extremely proud of this recognition,” Dr. Ricardo López, superintendent for Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) was quoted in the release as saying. “The faculty, staff, and administration at MCHS have come a long way from the campus’ humble beginning in portable classrooms.” The release states that according to U.S. News, the rankings use data from the 2014-2015 school year is through a partnership with RTI International. The re-
lease states the national publication uses a four-step process in determining the Best High Schools lists. The first three steps are designed to ensure that the schools serve all students well, using performance on math and reading parts of state exams and graduation rates as benchmarks. Step one statistical performance expected for students in the state. Step two, for schools passing the first step, looks at performance of disadvantaged students as compared to their counterparts in the state. Steps three and four look at graduation rates. Step four looks at college-readiness performance based on
Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate test data. As a state-designated early college high school, MCHS students are allowed to take college courses as early as their freshmen year in high school, according to the press release which said students also receive a rigorous curriculum through dual credit and AP courses. Students who apply themselves can graduate from MCHS with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree from South Texas College, the release said.
