2018 HS Softball BIG7 THE
of another perfect year in 31-5A action. While Pioneer lost a strong senior class, the Lady Diamondbacks are back in the hunt for a district title. Senior Fabiola Gonzalez, a fourth-year varsity member, will lean on her experience to help lead the team with fellow Lady Diamondbacks Madison Sparks, Illiana Casanova, Alex Hernandez and Callie Bess. Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots The Mission Veterans Memorial Lady Patriots are 4-1 so far in District 315A action and are looking to keep their streak alive. The Lady Patriots most recently ran over Roma 16-1 on Tuesday as the Lady Patriots’ bats came alive. Head Coach Vivian Ray and the Lady Patriots are focused on making another trip to the playoffs in 2018. The Lady Patriots are led on the diamond by senior pitcher Iliana Contreras, junior shortstop Makenzie Gerlach and seniors Jessel Gomez, center fielder, and Natalie Cavazos, right fielder.
31-5A Sharyland Lady Rattlers The Sharyland Lady Rattlers are reloaded and looking to compete for a district championship in 2018. To do so, the Lady Rattlers will have to unseat defending champ and rival Pioneer. If there’s a team in 31-5A capable of doing so, it’s the Sharyland Lady Rattlers, coached by Paul Cruz. The Lady Rattlers are led by sophomore pitcher and shortstop Tristen Maddox, last year’s Newcomer of the Year, and seniors
Karen Gil (CF), Yesenia Alvarez (3B/ DH) and Melanie Lazos (3B/DH). Fellow sophomores Lexy Murillo (SS/3B/OF) Ariana Garcia (3B/ SS), Anastasia Cruz (OF) and junior Arianna Guzman (1B/DH) round out the group of returning starters for the Lady Rattlers. Pioneer Lady Diamondbacks Unbeaten in district play for two consecutive seasons, the Pioneer Lady Diamondbacks and Head Coach Orlando Garcia are in pursuit
30-6A Juarez-Lincoln Lady Huskies The Juarez-Lincoln Lady Huskies are 0-2 in district thus far, and could find themselves at the bottom of 30-6A all year after a 12-0 district opening loss to Rowe and a 12-2 defeat at the hands of Palmview. Head Coach Clarissa Salinas and the Lady Huskies are in the process of putting together pieces that could turn Juarez-Lincoln into a contender on the softball diamond. La Joya Lady Coyotes Head Coach Carlos Rodriguez and the Lady Coyotes qualified for the postseason again and have the same

goals in 2018 with an improved team. The Lady Coyotes are 2-0 in district play and led by a pair of standout seniors in shortstop Monica Garcia and pitcher Sabrina Salinas. Garcia was named 1st Team All-District for her play in between second and third, and also earned 2nd Team All-Area honors. Salinas, last year’s 1st Team All-District pitcher, returns for her final year after 14 wins and a 1.82 ERA in 2017. Mission Lady Eagles Long-time Mission assistant Priscilla Aparicio takes over head coaching duties for the Lady Eagles and has playoff aspirations in year one at MHS. The Lady Eagles are led on the diamond by pitcher senior Jasmine Gamino, sophomore Evelyn Navarro, senior left fielder Alexis Farias and second baseman Lexi Flores. Palmview The Palmview Lady Lobos have been a pleasant surprise in 2018 and are playing solid all-around softball led by Head Coach Jessica CardenasRussel. The youthful Lady Lobos are currently 1-1 in district and led on the field by freshman Bianca Fernandez sophomore Madalynn Vela, sophomore Destiney Acevedo and on the mound by pitchers sophomore Cassandra Santos and junior Itzanelly Cordero.

SPORTS PREVIEW - 2018 SPRING EDITION
31-5A & 30-6A Baseball Preview 31-5A Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots Ben Gonzales enters his first year as Head Coach at Mission Veterans Memorial with a solid group leftover from last year’s district championship team. Returning to lead the Patriots is a trio of seniors who earned alldistrict honors last season in Anthony Gonzalez (3B/SS/P), Gio Grimaldo (OF) and Ricky Llanas (3B/DH), along with junior second baseman and pitcher Alex Guajardo. After opening up 31-5A play with wins over Laredo Martin and Roma by a combined score of 20-8, the Patriots fell against Laredo Cigarroa to move to 2-1 in district action. With Gonzales and a team with district championship experience, Mission Veterans Memorial is looking to compete for another 315A title in 2018. Pioneer Diamondbacks It’s the beginning of a new era on the diamond at Pioneer High School as Head Coach Casey Smith takes over the program after winning five district championships at Mission Veterans Memorial. It hasn’t taken long for the team to feel the effect as the Pioneer Diamondbacks are off to its best start since opening its doors four years ago. The Diamondbacks won the Sharyland ISD Hardball Classic last weekend and
boasts a 10-3 record overall and 1-1 in district play. After finishing 6th in district last season, the Patriots return five starters in senior Kike Valdivia (P), junior Jacob Rosales (SS/P), sophomore Evan Maldonado (P), senior Albert Garza (1B/3B/P), junior Johnny Lugo (OF/1B) and junior Fabio Valdivia (OF/2B/P). Sharyland Rattlers Head Coach Barton Bickerton and the Sharyland Rattlers are looking to get back into the postseason after a two year drought for the traditionally dominant team. After a 5th place finish in 2017 and a 2-16 district record in 2016, the Rattlers are back on the right track and in shape to contend for a playoff spot in 2018. Currently 9-3, 1-1 in district, the Rattlers return five starters led by 1st Team All-District selections Juan Lopez, a junior third baseman/catcher, and Abiel Garza, a junior first baseman/pitcher. The Rattlers are a young team but one on the rise as sophomore Case Gerlach (2B/P), junior Eduardo Salinas (1B/P) and junior Omar Martinez (OF) round out the group of returning Rattles. 30-6A Juarez-Lincoln Huskies The Juarez-Lincoln Huskies finished at the bottom of district 30-6A a season ago, winning just two district games. The arrow is pointing up for the Huskies, however, as Head Coach Michael Segovia and his nine key returners are focused on turning things around. Senior Eric Elizondo earned 2nd Team AllDistrict honors last season as a pitcher and an honorable mention as a shortstop, while fellow senior Manny Guzman was named an honorable
THE
BIG7 SCHOOLS
mention for his play at second base. La Joya Coyotes The La Joya Coyotes have become a playoff team year in and year out, and after finishing tied for second in district with an 8-4 record in 2017, are looking for more of the same in 2018. Head Coach Mario Flores is in his second year leading the Coyotes and has two key pieces La Joya is built around. Senior Ray Alaniz was named District 30-6A’s Defensive Player of the Year last season for his play at second base, while the Coyotes also have last year’s District 30-6A Newcomer of the Year in sophomore pitcher and third baseman Jonathan Martinez. That pair, along with senior catcher Ryan Lopez and senior first baseman/ pitcher Julian Castillo, have the Coyotes out to a 1-0 start in district and chasing a district championship. Mission Eagles The Mission Eagles and Head Coach Rick Lozano return a loaded group in 2018, one that has its eyes on the playoffs. The Eagles roster returns seven starters from a season ago, and all seven earned All-District honors, including 1st Team All-District members Andy Martinez, a junior second baseman/pitcher, and Steve Villarreal, a sophomore shortstop/ pitcher. Ricky Elizondo (3B/P), Juan Garza (3B), Mario Alaniz (1B/P/DH), Gerardo “Yayo” Cardoza (C/3B) and Jacob Salinas (Outfielder), round out the returners looking to put Mission back in the postseason.
Palmview Lobos The Palmview Lobos posted an 8-4 record in 2017, good enough to tie for second place in 30-6A, but have lost a strong senior class. Head Coach Manuel Garcia, 161 career-wins, and the Lobos aren’t letting that faze them and looking to keep Palmview in the playoff picture. The Lobos are led on the field by juniors Albino Villarreal, an honorable mention at catcher in 2017, and Erbey Polanco, the team’s first baseman.

A Sneak Peek into the Playoffs 30-6A Juarez-Lincoln
Mission High
The Juarez-Lincoln Huskies were one of four 6A teams left standing last season. After falling short in penalty kicks, the Huskies and Head Coach Victor Ramos are determined to get over that hump and contend for a state championship. Led by seniors Manuel Castrejon and Gerardo Reyes, the Huskies (9-1, 27 points) clinched another district title with two games left in the regular season. With matchups against La Joya and Memorial left on the slate, the JuarezLincoln Huskies look primed to make another run at a state championship.
The Mission Eagles are firmly locked into the number two spot in District 30-6A after splitting the season series with district champion Juarez-Lincoln. Head Coach Christos Barouhas has the Eagles sitting at 21-10-2 on the year and 6-4 in district play with 19 points. The Eagles are led by junior forwards Alan Palafox and John Cortez.
La Joya Soccer The La Joya Coyotes have been solid in 2018. Coached by Alexandro Davila, the Coyotes are 5-4 in District 30-6A with 16 points, three behind Mission.
THE
BIG7
The Coyotes are led on the field by the play of Johnny Gutierrez and Edgar Palomares, while goalkeeper Andre Ramirez protects the net for La Joya.
31-5A Sharyland Rattlers The Sharyland Rattlers were the only team to qualify for the postseason last year and look to have a firm hold on second place in District 315A. Currently 10-3 with 31 points, the Rattlers have created distance between themselves and the third seed Pioneer after a 1-0 victory on Tuesday. The Rattlers are coached by
SCHOOLS
Reveriano Hernandez and ranked top 10 in the Valley.
