Littzy Gonzalez
Brisseida Villarreal
Littzy Gonzalez is the daughter of Luis Alejandro Gonzalez and Magbelly Lopez. Gonzalez, the valedictorian for Thelma R. Salinas STEM Early College High School, is considered a mature, kind, and disciplined individual to her peers and academic leaders. Gonzalez was inspired by her teachers to become who she is today. She noted that Mrs. Sauceda showed her that she has a fire inside her that will never burn out. Sauceda helped her believe in herself. Gonzalez was also inspired by her cross country coach, who showed her it’s possible to balance multiple activities all at once. He helped her become a better student athlete. This has given her the ability to excel in her high school and college classes. Gonzalez describes herself as a hardworking individual who is willing to work hard to achieve her goals. She wants her family to be proud of her. She is a devout Christian, which sculpts her beliefs and character. She is tolerant and patient and able to work well with diverse groups of people. Gonzalez is active in the community and active in her school. She is a member in the National Honor Society, and has volunteered on the annual Cancer Awareness Walk and Suicide Prevention Run. She also volunteers at the local Boys and Girls Club. Gonzalez believes that experience has allowed her to create relationships with the kids and staff. Her fondest memory was hosting a Christmas event, where she gave gifts to the community and learned the importance of humility and experiencing the heart-warming feeling of sharing the Christmas spirit. Gonzalez volunteers with the Capable Kids Foundation. The foundation hosts basketball games and volunteers assist the players. The
participants who may have never been part of a team get to develop team-working abilities and learn socializing skills. She also helps her parents around their home auto repair shop. She has learned to organize their tools, and identify various auto parts. Gonzalez has also learned how to do an oil change and replace brake pads. She finds it exciting to be able to help her parents and learn to fix cars. Gonzalez will be graduating with 73 college hours and an associate’s degree in biology from South Texas College. She will be attending The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she will be pursuing a degree in biomedical science, while pursuing a career as an obstetrician and gynecologist. Daughter of Rafael Villarreal and Mayra Martinez, salutatorian Brisseida Villarreal is the first child of a hard working, dedicated pair of individuals who started off their marriage as migrants with aspirations of saving up for the future they dreamed of. After much effort they accomplished their goals and created the life that they wanted for themselves. Through their hardships they have encouraged their daughter from a young age to study hard and pursue success. With that in mind, Villarreal passed through elementary and middle school doing her academic best, and that became the place where she came to find her passion in math. Thus, when she heard of Salinas STEM ECHS, she knew that was the best place to further her excellence in math and challenge herself in order to get that advancement in her education. Throughout her years at STEM, Villarreal became a member of her school’s NHS organization, U.I.L. journalism team, book club,

Elmo Emmanuel Garza and Isaias Treviño will be majoring in engineering at two different campuses in the fall. Both high-ranking students at Thelma R. Salinas STEM Early College High School, the students received substantial scholarships from their prospective schools and plan to major in electrical engineering. Garza will be attending Rice University, and Treviño will be attending Case Western Reserve University. Garza and Treviño credit their parents for constant support and motivation
throughout their academic career in La Joya. “One of the main challenges that affected me and will affect everybody is procrastination,” Garza said. “That really kills you, especially in this school where the workload is so big. But this school prepares you to get the work ethic you need for college. Their friends and teachers helped them through high school and prepared them for what lies ahead. The amount of work that they did to graduate has gotten them ready for the next level. “They gave us a ton of
work, and I feel like it’s really prepared me for the harder-hitting things in college,” Treviño said. “Staying up late, knowing how to maximize my points and do everything in the correct order is something that is really going to help me for time management in college.” Treviño and Garza participated in several extracurricular activities in addition to their academics, including the school’s robotics team. Garza was in band, U.I.L., chess, the congressional app challenge, HOSA, and Treviño was in U.I.L., HOSA. Both were also members of
the National Honors Society. “Electrical engineering is something I see as the future,” Treviño said. “We’re moving away from more mechanics, everything is become more digital. Helping to better the future by advancing our electronics now is something that I would definitely love to do, because it’s helping society as a whole.” Garza actually aims to double major in electrical engineering and computer science, and Treviño aims to double major in electrical

LJISD students receive 10 DREAM US Scholarships
The DREAM US Scholarship winners from Juarez-Lincoln High School. Photo courtesy of LJISD. College Advisor Cecilia Flores could not be more proud of her students at Juarez-Lincoln High School. This year, ten students from the La Joya Independent School District were named DREAM US Scholars. Each student will be awarded a total of $29,000 in scholarship money to be used in a period of four years. All the students plan to attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the fall. According to a press release from the La Joya Independent School District, the DREAM US Scholarship has been awarded to Juarez-Lincoln High School students Karen Lozano, Dulce Cisneros, Omar Izaguirre, Nicanor Hernandez, Diana Vera, Liliana Perez, Eva Aleman, Maria Aguas, Palmview High School student Sofia
Moncayo Garcia and La Joya High School student Emy Covarruvia. The release also noted that the scholarship “is designed to help students complete their education without having to worry about the financial part of it.” The program is partnered with over 70 colleges with leaders “committed to addressing the barriers and challenges DREAMers face in getting into and through college.” 200 applications were sent out to UTRGV for this scholarship, and 20 were selected. Flores was happy that many of the scholarship earners are from Juarez-Lincoln, and spoke about the application process. “It’s a two-essay application, with a lot of extra documents they have to submit, plus their basic information,
parental information and a little bit about their history,” Flores said. “They’re all students who are undocumented.” DREAMers are students who are part of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program or the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. Flores spoke with her students at length about the challenges they may be facing because of their status. “I told them from the very beginning when they started applying that unfortunately, they don’t have a lot of opportunities,” Flores said. “I told them that right off the bat because I really wanted to be honest with them.”

Jimmy Carter ECHS student earns scholarship, aims to study criminology April Bazan found her fascination with the study of the criminal mind, and is planning on pursuing that information further in the next chapter of her academic career. Bazan, one of the top-ranked students at Jimmy Carter Early College High School in La Joya, will be attending St. Edward’s University in Austin in the fall. She plans on majoring in criminology. “My sister is a criminal justice major, and

she’s been a really big inspiration for me,” Bazan said. “I guess I got her same passion and I love it so much as well.” Bazan will graduate with her associate’s degree from South Texas College in criminal justice, which led her further into the subject and ultimately into criminology. “I just liked it more than criminal justice,” Bazan said. “Criminology is the study of crime and criminals, and I’m really attracted to that. The crimes that criminals unfortunately do and their motives, I find it really interesting.” She credits her family for supporting her and encouraging her to study hard in school. Bazan participated in U.I.L., National Honors Society, student council, Mu Alpha Theta and volunteered for various organizations. She found that the college courses she took in high school to be some of her biggest challenges at Jimmy Carter. “I was never used to that, and in my junior and senior year it became a lot more challenging,” Bazan said. “I did struggle a lot, but I did pass thanks to my teachers, studying a lot, reading everything and taking notes.” Bazan, who is part of the migrant program at La Joya ISD, did not know that St. Edward’s existed until she went into a college fair and found that their CAMP (College Assistance Migrant Program) scholarship would be ideal for her. “I asked questions, and they started giving me a lot of information about it, they were very persuasive,” Bazan said. “So I really got into it, so I decided to apply and I got the scholarship, so they’re paying for my years.” She added that she was relieved to receive the scholarship from the school, and it felt good. Bazan’s teachers and friends made a major impact on her academic career at La Joya. “They’re very inspirational, and they

La Joya High School senior earns full ride to Ivy League school Salutatorian Rodolfo Peña is getting ready to move across the country on the next step of his academic journey. Peña, a soon-to-be graduate of La Joya High School, received a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He plans on majoring in mathematics and minoring in actuarial science. According to him, his mother’s continued support throughout his education
motivated him to succeed and go on to study his passion. After applying to several Ivy League schools and getting accepted into a few, Peña found his collegiate future at UPenn. He said he is looking forward to meeting the diverse array of people in the new environment he will find himself in. “I’ll find my way at Penn,” Peña said. “Going [so far] away from home, it’ll be a different type of culture.”
Peña also noted that the academics at UPenn will be a good challenge to undertake and continue in the next level of education. “It speaks volumes, and ultimately I just want to further my education, and I’m beyond excited it’s at UPenn,” Peña said. “It’s completely different, and that’s also what I’m looking forward to.”

16 PHS students to graduate with PCT certification
Several students at Palmview High School will be graduating with Patient Care Technician certifications this year, allowing them to work in the medical field this summer after graduation. 16 students at PHS passed state exams and earned the certifications, all while completing their regular high school courses and remaining heavily involved with extracurricular activities. Three of those students, Lizbeth Nolan, Raul De Leon and Libertad Vera are all grateful to the district for the opportunity to gain experience in the field and make their entrance into medical work. “I’m glad I’m certified
as a technician in something I want to pursue instead of working in fast food where you’re not learning about what you want to do,” De Leon said. All three want to move even further into the field of medicine, which motivated them to join the program at the beginning of this school year. “It’s the beginning to gaining experience,” Nolan said. The Health Science Endorsement at Palmview High School allows them to earn these certifications over a student’s senior year of high school. A rigorous program, at one point in the year stu-
dents were testing daily. “It’s challenging, but if you manage your time correctly and focus on what is important, you’ll get everything done. With the PCT certification, students can either work as certified nurse’s assistant, phlebotomist or Electrocardiograph (EKG) technician. The phlebotomy portion of the program was particularly challenging according to the students, who described practicing their “pokes” on each other to gain more knowledge. “Your very first poke is the scariest thing,” Vera said.

RODOLFO PEÑA
He added that coming from one of the most economically challenged areas in the country was one of the many challenges he faced getting to graduation. “According to statistics, we’re in one of the poorest cities in the U.S.,” Peña said. “It’s really difficult to graduate, let alone be accepted into an Ivy League school.”
In addition to that, Peña’s father was incarcerated when he was 10 years old, so his mother had to take up the mantle of taking care of their household. “He was an amazing father,” Peña said. “But after that my mother had to provide for us, my older sister and my younger brother. That was one of my biggest
challenges, growing up without a father figure.” Peña’s mother was also recently diagnosed with cancer, which made the decision to leave a difficult one. He said he had to make it. “It’s just a lot,” Peña said. “When I was accepted, I had imposter syndrome, and I was wondering ‘How did I get in? Why did I get in?’”
LJHS UIL Regional Members Aaron Acevedo (Social Studies), Carlos Baltazar (Number Sense), Hugo Cantu (Number Sense), Daffne Castro (News Writing), Roy Flores Jr., (Current Issues), Valeria Garcia (Social Studies), Diego Leal (Number Sense), Joshua Loya (Current Issues), Alessandra Martinez (Current Issues), Rodolfo Pena (Calculator Apps, Mathematics), Valeria Saenz (Social Studies), Simon Salinas (Prose) and Leslie Zepeda (Number Sense).
Peña has always been on task and getting ready for college. “It began when I was a middle school student,” Peña said. “I feel La Joya High School will prepare me and has prepared me for future endeavors.” Peña was very involved during his time at La Joya High School, participating in
folklorico, National Honors Society (serving as president), U.I.L mathematics and calculators and Mu Alpha Theta. “Everything I did made me a better person and made me a more prepared student,” Peña said. “You have to find a balance. It’s tough, but I am happy I was able to be one of those students.”
Peña advises students to not just focus on the academics when in high school. “Have more fun,” Peña said. “I did have fun, but just enjoy your four years because they’re gone in the blink of an eye. I wouldn’t change a single thing about my high school experience.”
La Joya HS Senior Class Officers Kaitlyn Pequeno- Secretary, Marely Martinez- President, Annet Chacon- Treasurer, Sofia Elizondo- Historian.
Aaron Acevedo is 6A Student Athlete of the Year Aaron Acevedo is a senior at La Joya High School, and has recently been granted the honors of 6A Student Athlete of the year. Considered a strenuous endeavor to continuously balance the life of a student athlete, Acevedo would like to thank his coaches and family for embedding a hardworking personality within him. He believes that he would not be where he is today if it weren’t for their constant guidance and motivation to continuously place one hundred percent in everything he does. Acevedo would also like to thank all those involved with the selection
process, and anyone who voted for him to receive this honor. Acevedo believes that all were worthy candidates, and wishes each one of them success and luck as they continue their education. Throughout his senior year, he excelled scholastically, being selected as a member of the All State Academic football team. He also obtained successes in various extracurricular activities such as U.I.L., where he acquired over six first place trophies and a district championship in social studies, which allowed for him and his team to qualify
for the regional meet. His affiliation to the National Honor Society has also enhanced his sociological capital by allowing for him to be exposed to the needs society has, and according to him, he actively wishes to pursue community aid throughout his life. Along with these extracurricular successes, he managed to maintain a high position on the ranking hierarchy, finishing 5th amongst his senior class. His peers and school leaders regard Acevedo as a pristine representative of what La Joya High School deems as an allaround student.
After high school, Aaron will be attending St Mary’s University in San Antonio, where he will be majoring in political science and minoring in english. He wishes to pursue a graduate degree in law at Columbia University, and with this education, he will pursue a career as a criminal defense attorney. Acevedo also plans on eventually running for a House of Representatives position in order to propose and advocate for legislation in favor of societal reformation in context to basic human rights.

JUAREZ LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL “I SUPPORT THE TASSEL” PROGRAM to Sponsor 86 Husky Seniors with Graduation Gear
When Juarez-Lincoln High School Graduation Specialists, Erika Salinas and Xochitl Garcia, LBSW learned that some of their students wouldn’t be able to walk across the stage at graduation back in the Spring of 2015, they wanted to know why, and help. Hundreds of graduating seniors throughout the country won’t be able to don the cap and gown at their milestone ceremony this May — simply because they can’t
afford it. Sometimes students opt out from attending graduation so as not to cause their parents an additional expense. “Our Husky students are humble and kind. They see the daily struggle their parents go through to make ends meet and do not want to add an additional cost to the already economically disadvantage household. Many students have said that the money that would be used on the purchase of the cap and
gown could be used instead to pay a water bill, an electricity bill or partial rent payment,” stated Xochitl Garcia, LBSW at Juarez-Lincoln High School. An average cost for each cap and gown set is $40. When Salinas and Garcia heard some of their students couldn’t make ends meet, they created a program called “I Support The Tassel,” where sponsors could make monetary donations to sponsor seniors that could
not afford their graduation gear. “It is our wish here at Juarez-Lincoln High School to see this act of kindness grow so that we can help our Huskies attend their graduation and don’t miss out because of the inability to purchase a cap and gown. In the future we would like to assist our sister schools to ensure that all La Joya ISD PACK students attend graduation,” added Garcia. With the help of spon-
sors for the past 5 years the “I Support The Tassel” program has grown: 2014-2015= 10 caps and gowns (Parent Volunteer Fund Raiser) 2015-2016 = 10 caps and gowns (Parent Volunteers Fund Raiser) 2016-2017= 10 caps and gowns (Parent Volunteers Fund Raiser) 2017-2018 = 30 caps and gowns (Parents & Community Fund Raiser) 2018-2019 = 86 caps and
gowns (Community & Staff Fundraiser) Special thanks to all sponsors for contributing to this year’s program that helped sponsor 86 seniors with a cap and gown! They are: Diana Lopez, RJ’S Rental & Catering Service, Esperanza Ochoa, Benito Hernandez Trucking (Mary T. Hernandez), Zayde Hernandez, Yadira

When the scholarship application was made available, Flores urged several students to go for it. “I told them they only have these few opportunities, so they have to take advantage of them,” Flores said. “There isn’t a lot of money out there for them, and the state of Texas only provides them with $5,000 to go to school, which is technically not enough for a four year university.” Not having to worry about tuition, dorm costs and books is an incredible chance for these students, according to Flores. She was overjoyed when so many names from her school were announced
as recipients. “This is an incredible opportunity, it’s basically their one shot to that degree,” Flores said. “I’m super proud of them, and I’m glad they took the opportunity.” “A lot of students tend to just not want to do this or write essays because they think it’s a lot of work,” Flores said. “And these kids, took advantage of it.” In previous years, other LJISD students have won DREAM US Scholarships, but not to this degree. “This has been the most [receiving] we’ve ever had,” Flores said. “It’s incredible, I couldn’t believe it. The number just kept going up, and
we’re all super proud. It’s a huge accomplishment.” Flores said that the students all have varying goals and career paths they want to take in the future, and this scholarship will give them that first step. Among them, they will be majoring in music, education, engineering and business. “I hope they succeed in whatever they want to do,” Flores said. “I told them that once they have this, don’t let it go to waste. Make sure you take advantage of it fully. They have everything to change the world, they can do that.”

JUAREZ-LINCOLN TOP 2
born in Elkhart, Indiana. Since early childhood, he and his family have immigrated as a necessity, eventually settling in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Carrillo describes his stay there as anything but elegant as he and her family struggled with poverty and other economic shortcomings such as the lack of food and limited water and electricity at home. By the time Carrillo started attending high school, he was forced to ultimately drop out due to a lack of transportation. Then, Carrillo’s parents moved to the Rio Grande Valley and enrolled him to Juarez-Lincoln High School where he got the news that he was going to have to be held back by two years and
start as a freshman. Though he debated dropping out of school to start working full time, Carrillo was encouraged to continue pursuing an education by his parents. Despite being at a disadvantage from his peers, Carrillo was able to make the A honor roll. During his junior year, he became a recreational powerlifter, which he credits for teaching him time management skills and the art of perseverance to have the drive and confidence to reach his goals. As a powerlifter, Carrillo totaled 1,005 pounds at an unofficial meet. He is also an AP scholar with honors, a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar, a QuestBridge Finalist, and a Texas Science and Engineering Fair state finalist. Carrillo is president of
Student Council, vice president of the Science National Honor Society, a member of the National Honor Society, and the treasurer for the Robotics club that organized the underwater robotics competition. Carrillo has also completed 120 community service hours by assisting at the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, Operation Lone Star, and as a UIL judge for elementary competitions. Carrillo will be part of the first graduating class of the Academy for Health Science Professions & STEM. At this point, he has completed 22 college hours and at nearly 20 years old, and will be attending Texas A&M University at College Station where he will major in chemical engineering.

PCT CERTIFICATION
“They tell you ‘Okay, you’ve already learned how to position the needle, now go ahead,’” De Leon said. “And suddenly you’re hands-on, doing it.” The students had several chances for hands-on learning, and also spent time practicing and learning at local nursing homes to gain even more insight. The program has been part of this school for five years, and grown over time. PCT Teacher Terri Kozar said students are prepared, and passing the final state exam shows their readiness to get out there.
from pg. 2B
“I hope they enjoy the experience and continue to go further,” Kozar said. “It gives them a sense of not only dignity, but self-worth, especially since they’ve passed the state exam.” Kozar finds that these programs are vital for a well-rounded and successful school district and student population. “It gives them the opportunity to work within the medical field, a lot of students are undecided whether or not to get into the medical profession,” Kozar said. “So this gives them an idea of what they will experience
out there, and if they want to advance further, they can.” The PCT certification is not a stepping stone necessarily, as it is not a prerequisite for becoming a nurse or doctor, but it allows them to see the process from actual experience and gauge if they want to pursue it more. This program also includes medical billing and coding experience. When asked if they would recommend other students to pursue this certification if given the option, they all responded with a resounding “yes.”

Rivas plans to attend Texas A&M University College Station. The reason she chose this university was that colleges close to home didn’t offer her major, and she wanted to experience college outside the valley to expand her opportunities. The major Rivas wants to pursue is biomedical engineering because it would allow her to help those who can’t live life to the fullest due to a physical impairment via the development of prosthetics and artificial organs. Rivas is the first in her
family to go to college. Throughout her high school years, Rivas has been a part of organizations such as Mu Alpha Theta, Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, and U.I.L. Academics. She was secretary of Mu Alpha Theta her junior year and vice president her senior year, as well as treasurer of Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica her junior year. In U.I.L. academics she took part in the mathematics, number sense, and ready writing events. Rivas earned several trophies and ribbons along the way, but her ma-
jor accomplishments were advancing to regionals for ready writing and mathematics and to the state competition for mathematics. There were several people who had a significant influence on Rivas, those of which include her U.I.L. math coach Ms. Alfonso. Ms. Alfonso became a second mom to Melissa and helped shape her into the person she is today. She pushed her to work hard and to be confident in her knowledge and abilities.

La Joya ISD Jimmy Carter Early College High School Named a U.S. Department of Education 2018 National Blue Ribbon School
The U.S. Secretary of Education released the names of 349 schools, from across the country, as National Blue Ribbon School for 2018. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Submitted to the USDE: “Jimmy Carter Early
from pg. 3B
College High School was founded upon the belief that all students, regardless of socio-economic background, can achieve college success. We guide students through a thoughtfully chosen area of study, accurate course placement, and ultimately an associate’s degree. The process is organized, informative, and supportive, designed to fo-
cus students on their ultimate goal: to prepare for college, career, and life. Administrators, teachers, and support staff commit to this vision, as do students. To prepare students academically, The Common Instructional Framework is implemented in all courses, a guide that provides teacher and student flexibility, origi-

motivate me a lot,” Bazan said. “And I think that’s very important because students need that.” While she sometimes found herself insecure about her abilities, Bazan said her teachers motivated and pushed her to find that confidence. “I’ve really gotten through my years because of them,” Bazan said. Her biggest message to future LJISD students is to never give up when things get difficult.
“Push harder, everything is going to be okay,” Bazan said. “Forget what’s going on and really focus on yourself. Get any opportunity that comes your way and forget about the challenges.” Her family will still be in the RGV when she moves, so Bazan is somewhat nervous to leave for that reason. “My family is here, and I don’t know anybody in Austin,” Bazan said. “It’s my first time going to Austin, and I’m nervous especially because it’s a bigger city. But
I’m actually very excited.” Bazan looks forward to the college experience, and the opportunity to study something she is passionate about. “I’m excited to meet new people, see new faces,” Bazan said. “Just getting to know what’s out there in the field of criminology, getting to study it and get some hands-on experience, maybe get an internship along the way… I’m really excited for that.”
nality, and rigor. Our teachers are life-long learners and collaborators, dedicated to the belief students learn when provided an academic environment that is rigorous yet supportive. All teachers are highly accessible, and students frequently use classrooms to study, collaborate, or tutor. Our campus is united through shared values of inclusivity, respect, and commitment to a common goal. Students feel part of an institution dedicated to their academic and social well-being. First to attend college in their family, our students are educational pioneers building a legacy of excellence for themselves, their family, and their community, well into the 21st century. “I’m pleased to celebrate with you as your school is named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “We recognize
and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives. Congratulations on your students’ accomplishments and for your extraordinary commitment to meeting their unique needs.” All schools are honored in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates: • –Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students over the past five years. LJISD Jimmy Carter ECHS earned EXEMPLARY HIGH PERFORMING
SCHOOL status. Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites National Blue Ribbon School nominations from the top education official in all states. Private schools are nominated by The Council for American Private Education (CAPE). The coveted National Blue-Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 36th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 8,800 schools. On November 7-8, the Secretary and the Department of Education will celebrate with 300 public and 49 private school honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

received from her principal, teachers, and fellow students, she is completely ready to attend The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley this Fall of 2019 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

engineering and chemical engineering. Treviño said the diversity they will see in their new schools will be exciting, and Garza agreed. “Where I’m going, I already visited, and every time I hear people they’re saying all these things and I’m thinking ‘Wow, over here [back home] I think I’m one of the top ones, but over there I’m like nobody,’” Garza said. “So I want to hang around other students over there, learn new things, get new experience.” While they are nervous to undertake a new level of
academics in places far away from their families, Treviño and Garza are eager to excel and gain more knowledge in their fields. “The world can all be mathematically placed, a majority of math and science and physics classes require math, and it’s really nice to see how all of this fits into the real world,” Treviño said. “It’s how everything around you works.” Not having to worry about the majority, if not all of their college expenses covered by their schools thanks to scholarships they earned, has been
a relief for Garza and Treviño, and they plan on putting their focus on what matters in the future. They encouraged students to prioritize what is necessary to get into a good school if college is their choice upon graduation, and get things done on time. “Don’t get mixed up with the wrong group of people, because they’re going to bring you down with them,” Garza said. “If you can, try to motivate others to study hard.”
Thelma R. Salinas STEM ECHS Celebrates 2019 College Decision Day Thelma Salinas STEM Early College High School’s class of 2019 celebrated May 3rd Generation Texas College Decision Day with a variety of activities and an opportunity to reflect on the important events of the last four years. Principal DaLee Garcia kicked off the event by explaining that high school seniors from all over Texas recognize this date as the day to declare the college/ university they will attend in the fall. Mrs. Garcia also explained what the students were expected to do at each of the stations. Students had the opportunity to pin a mini personalized graduation cap on a giant map indicating the location of their chosen colleges, write thank you notes to those that offered them support throughout their high school years, leave words of advice to the upcoming class of 2020, and take pictures with classmates/staff/college recruiters at the photo booth. UTRGV recruiter Albert Garcia commented, “I feel a
great sense of pride and responsibility interacting with these future students mostly because they are trust us with their education and ultimately with their futures. Senior Deana Salinas appreciated the time the campus gave the class to celebrate Decision Day, “The activities served to congratulate us with a chance to mingle with our classmates before we all go our separate ways. Arturo Garza said, “The day served to prepare me for the reality of what’s to come.” Event organizers Jesus Vasquez, counselor, and Jennifer Garza, college readiness clerk wanted to celebrate the day with meaningful activities that allowed students to reflect on everything they have done to prepare for college. “The students’ responses to the activities were more than I expected. We’ve gotten so attached to this class, and I know they will all be very successful college students,” observed Ms. Garza.
The seniors of 2018 have achieved another important milestone. 90% of the class will graduate with Associate Degrees from South Texas College on May 17, 2019. “ I cannot be any prouder of this class, “ states Principal Garcia, “Not only did they stay focused on their academic goals, but they have been extremely caring with one another offering assistance and words of encouragement to classmates.” But perhaps senior Tylor Gonzalez might have summed it up the best, “today was exactly what we needed. A day to reflect and take in the last four years and appreciate how far we have come. The class of 2019 would like to thank all the event organizers, Mrs. Garcia for her support, and the office staff for all their hard work to make this day special for all.

LJISD Senior Class Presidents’ Farewell Message La Joya HS Senior Class President Marely Martinez
Marely Martinez
La Joya HS Senior Class President
Graduation marks the end of our high school journey, and the start of the rest of our lives. We entered high school as children and leaving as young, accomplished adults. The memories we made at La Joya High School will last a lifetime. There have been
many ups and downs along the way. We are a lucky group, we got through all four years of high school. There are many of you that I have never spoken to, but I wish you as much luck as I would wish my friends. I hope you all achieve greatness in life.
I know many of you are probably watching the clock so you can leave with either your family or friends to celebrate, but I want all of us to take this sight in. This is it. The moment has arrived. This is going to be the last time that we are all going to be in the same
room together. It’s going to be the last time you sit next to the person on your left and right. It may be the last time you see the person who broke your heart. Today is full of last moments, and it is time to move on to creating firsts: the first time you get your own apartment
and walk onto the college campus and the first time you find a job in the career you worked for. We have strived tremendously to get to this moment and it’s finally here. The world isn’t ready for the class of 2019.
Juarez-Lincoln HS Senior Class President Samantha Villarreal As we walk out into the real world, keep in mind everything you have accomplished to this day. For years we’ve all been saying, “I cannot wait for senior year,” until the time actually came. Each day is a day closer to graduation. It might have not sunk in yet, but we’re already experiencing many “lasts.”
Next time you’re in a game, a competition, or any other event, cherish and soak up every single moment with the people around you. Time is limited, it’s all going to be over in a few weeks. By the time we know it, its graduation day! Once we receive that piece of paper, that diploma, our high school
days are over and long gone. Savor every moment until then. Appreciate your teachers, coaches, parents and anyone else who has helped you along your journey. Study for the big test, laugh with your friends, cry a frustration over difficult classes you have, but above all, do not
waste your time here by wishing you were somewhere else. We’re about to enter the real world in a couple of weeks. And when we do, some of us are going to wish we could go back to being freshmen to experience everything one last time. Focus on experiencing what the world has to offer; other cultures, the
wonders of the world, more knowledge. Strive to experience something new everyday. Enjoy every moment of it, no matter what that moment is. Time flies, so fill every second of the remainder of weeks we have with happiness, ambition, and determination. We are the best class, the Class of 2019!

I started high school brand new to this district, and did not know anyone on this campus. But that quickly changed, and I immediately felt welcome. I came out of my shell and started talking to more people and started making a ton of new friends. One thing I will
always carry with me forever is how my class allowed me to be their president for two consecutive years during my junior and senior year. Although many of us did not agree on the same thing, I would always try my best to find a solution to keep everyone happy and on good terms
with one another. My class taught me conflict resolution, and together we found ways to work closely together. I love how close we have become as a class and not to sound cliché, but I feel like we have truly become a family. It feels as if just yesterday we were freshmen
and now we are seniors, about to graduate high school and pursue greater things. Some of us are leaving to college, serving our country, or leaving for work, and I am so proud of us. I speak not just for myself, but for the entire class of 2019, when I say we appreciate everything
La Joya ISD has given us. Because of our amazing district, we have had the chance to take college classes and participate in UIL activities, which gave us the opportunity to interact with one another and create a stronger bond.
Jimmy Carter Early College High School Senior Class President Sebastian Solis It all started about four years ago in a small room in the upstairs library of Jimmy Carter where we first realized what it meant to be a “cohort,” as preached to us by our then principal Ms. Sepulveda. We faced adversity in changes to our programs, teachers, and even our administration,
but through it all we persevered as a class. Through the guidance of our teachers and support from each other, we shaped what it meant to be a red wolf. We were the first class to establish many traditions in Jimmy Carter Early College High School and we’ve shaped a legacy to be
proud of. Everyone understood the risk and sacrifice we faced in the upcoming four years in high school. These sacrifices shaped us from a bunch of middle school, unique personalities, to one special family of seniors. We accepted the challenge and now we stand
at the edge of success and we grow eager every day to see the next mountain of opportunities that awaits us. So, our time at Jimmy Carter won’t be defined by our grades, the awards we have achieved, or by the popularity, but by the relationships we have cultivated with the people
around us. Although to the outsiders we may look like an average group of high school seniors, there is no doubt we have left our mark on this school as anything but average.

Thelma R. Salinas ECHS Senior Class President
As the Thelma R. Salinas STEM Early College High School Senior Class President of 2019, I, Brenda Villarreal, can say emphatically that this year was one for the ages. This class has grown and matured to become the fine graduates that we are today. I would like to say that
I am the most proud of what this class has accomplished throughout our four academic years. With a 90% achievement rate in completing our associate’s degree, and acquiring over one million dollars in scholarships, we, the Class of 2019, have left an indelible mark on our campus
and provided a model for future generations to follow. Although there were bumps in the road, we as a class overcame them and set our differences aside to achieve what many believed was the impossible. Attending Thelma R. Salinas STEM Early College High School was
a struggle and a sacrifice we all endured, and I believe that we had no idea the amount of challenges and obstacles we would face along the way. However, the important part is that we made it through the storm. Having the opportunity to lead this class, along with my fellow senior
class officers and sponsors, was a privilege and I would dare to say an absolute blessing. I wish the class of 2019 good luck on their future goals, and to always remember the unforgettable memories we made together.
LA JOYA ISD WE’RE KIND OF A B19 DEAL.. SENIORS 2019! • A time for looking back on lessons learned, adventures shared, bright moments filled with special meaning. • A time for saying goodbye to old friends, to good times you’ve known..a time for packing away memories and treasures for tomorrow. • A time for looking forward, a time to set new goals, to dream new dreams and to try your wings and see what lies beyond.
