Mission CISD Graduation Edition

2019 CAMPUS CHORONICLE “Recognizing Excellence In Education ” Progress Times - Section C - May 31, 2019

Dear Graduating Class of 2019, The 2018-19 academic year is quickly reaching its finale. May brings celebrations and recognitions that display the excellence of our students, from Kindergarten Graduation, National Honor Society Induction, Mission Excellence Banquet. The grand finale in June will be High School Graduation! Just like Kindergarten Graduation concludes the beginning stage of our kinder students’ education, high school graduation will mark the beginning of your career paths, whether you continue your education, head straight into the job market, or enter the armed forces. We know that you will enter the next chapter of your lives with confidence, as we have not only educated and provided the appropriate tools needed for your next endeavor, but also with the soft skills needed, such as communication, team work, and leadership. For some of you heading off to college, you may be the first person in your family to embark in this chapter. Still, graduates, the next phase in your life will bring on a mix of emotions, along with the questions of what, when, where, why, and how. That is perfectly normal. We at Mission CISD have been very fortunate and blessed to have committed faculty and staff who have educated and guided you in turning your dreams, desires, and interests into achievable goals. At the start of your freshman year, you met with counselors who guided you throughout your four-year journey in high school. Once you reached Junior year, you had the opportunity to take some College Readiness Courses. These courses guided you with all the details needed to pursue higher education. This includes the application process, major selection, financial aid, campus housing, SAT/ACT, and scholarship opportunities. With our high schools offering a variety of instructional pathways, you have had the opportunity to graduate having earned up to 60 college hours. Our high schools also provided industry leading Career Technical Education opportunities, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Interdisciplinary course sequences that allowed for rigorous learning for you who wished to pursue a variety of career options. To our seniors, on behalf of all Mission CISD Staff and Board of Trustees, we are very proud of you for reaching this milestone! We are anticipating hearing of the many adventures your road map will lead you on. The one thing you must never forget is soon you will have the honor of being deemed a Mission CISD Alumnus. You have played a valuable role of demonstrating what Mission CISD Pride is, and you will continue to fulfill your duty of “Changing the World!”

Mission CISD CNA students are job-ready well before graduation

56 students from Mission High School (MHS) and Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) gathered together in January to celebrate a milestone that makes them workforce-ready before they even graduate from high school. The students are part of

the Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) Health Science Academy program and have not only successfully completed the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) course of study, but have also passed their certification exams. The celebration held on

January 29 was to recognize the course completion, and to officially have a pinning ceremony for the 56 students who have earned their CNA certifications. Many of the students are actually juniors in high school and will continue their studies and earn other

health related professional certifications before they graduate from high school next year. This represents just one of many career oriented programs that students at Mission CISD can take advantage of as they not only prepare for college,

but also a career. Last year, about 2,000 professional certifications were earned by Mission CISD high school students through programs offered at the district’s high schools. In addition to the 56 CNA students who earned their pin so far, another 60 will

be eligible for certification testing by the end of the school year. Pictured are CNA students from MHS and VMHS who received their course completion certificates and those who also earned their CNA certifications.

3rd Ranking

2019 MHS Top 3 Valedictorian The 2019 Mission High School Valedictorian is Alejandro Hernandez. He is the son of Bernabe and Nelia Hernandez. This fall, he will be attending the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and will be studying civil engineering. Hernandez is looking forward to learning and taking an in-depth look into his field of interest. When he graduates from the university he is interested in working in a company to gain experience, and then later open his own civil engineering business. Hernandez will miss his friends and his ability to get around the MHS campus easily, but he is confident that he will learn his way around the UTRGV campus. Hernandez participated in U.I.L. Calculators, Business Professionals of America and the National Honor Society. He has a few words of advice for the MHS Class of 2020: if you want to strive for success, don’t quit,

even though it may be hard because eventually it pays off in the end. Salutatorian The Salutatorian for the Mission High School Class of 2019 is Vanessa Zavala. She is the daughter of Maria Melara. Zavala plans to attend the University of Texas- Austin and she will study biology. She wants to continue her education and will be attending medical school after obtaining her undergraduate degree. Zavala would like to seek a career as a Pediatric Doctor, whether in the Rio Grande Valley or in Austin. She also hopes to one day open her own clinic. Zavala participated in the school’s color guard, National Honor Society and U.I.L. Biology. She is looking forward to the diversity that she will be exposed to while in Austin. Zavala is excited to meet new people, experience the culture and visit new places. She will miss her support system (family) and although she can

contact them through phone it will be just slightly different than seeing them every day. She advises the MHS class of 2020 to apply early to universities and scholarships because that really helps, and to keep working hard because it does pay off in the end. Third Ranking The 2019 Third Ranking Student for Mission High School is Enrique Elizondo. He is the son of Enrique and Anna Elizondo. Elizondo has his sights set on attending the University of Texas at Austin, where he will be studying to obtain a degree in civil engineering. His ultimate goal is to have his own business but not before he has gained some experience working at an engineering firm. Elizondo is excited about what new opportunities this move will bring him and looks forward to living in Austin. He participated in baseball (4-year letterman) and National Honor Society.

VMHS student is state precision machining champ

Veterans Memorial High School student Andrew Vela returned from the Texas SkillsUSA competitions with some serious bragging rights. He earned first place in the Precision Machining contest. This competition requires the students to complete mill work, lathe work, and machine shop mathematics. While he did not place in the top three, fellow VMHS student, Diego C. Gonzalez

also competed at the state level. The competitions were held in Corpus Christi, Texas. This is the second time in recent years that the first place state finisher in this competition has come from VMHS. Pictured from left to right are: Rene Pena, instructor; Andrew Vela; Diego C. Gonzalez.

Valedictorian Michael A. Iglesias is the 2019 Veterans Memorial High School Valedictorian. He is the son of Hector and Leticia Iglesias. This fall, Iglesias will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and studying electrical engineering along with computer science. After graduating with his undergraduate degree, he is still debating whether he wants to join the workforce to gain experience his field, or continue his education to obtain a graduate degree. For now, he knows he still has some time to decide. Iglesias participated in U.I.L. (Math, Calculators, and Computer Science), National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Robotics, SeaPearch, Business Professionals of America and Destination Imagination. Iglesias says he is really looking forward to new experiences in a new place. However, this fall, he knows he will miss his family, friends and the food. He advises the VMHS class of 2020 to follow their passion, whatever it may be as long as it makes them happy. Salutatorian The Salutatorian for the Veterans Memorial High School class of 2019 is Miguel A. Ayala. He is the son of Pedro and Melba Ayala. Ayala will be attending Texas A&MCollege Station this fall to study bio-

medical engineering or aerospace engineering. He is just waiting to see which field he will be most interested in, once he takes a couple of classes. As far as what Ayala will do after obtaining his undergraduate degree, he states it depends. He will make a choice at that time on whether to go to graduate school or get a job in his field to gain experience. Ayala participated in National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, Robotics and Mu Alpha Theta. He looks forward to meeting new people and taking part of college life. His advice for next year’s seniors is; just because it is your senior year doesn’t mean you can slack off. Stay on task, know what you want to do, know what college you want to attend, which scholarships you want to apply for, but most of all just set goals and follow them. Ayala is excited about his new journey and can’t wait to attend Texas A&M. As classes begin this fall, he will miss his family and friends the most as well as the comfort of knowing his surroundings. Living in a new place means learning and getting to know where everything is, but he says that he will be using the GPS quite a bit. Third Ranking The Third Ranking student for the

VMHS class of 2019 is Melanie Peña. She is the daughter of Noe Alberto and Esmeralda Peña. Peña has her sights set on a degree in biology from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She has her plan laid out for what comes after her undergraduate degree. She states that she will be attending Texas A&M to obtain her doctorate degree in pharmacy, and then she wants to return to the Rio Grande Valley. Peña wants to be a pharmacist at one of the hospitals here. It is extremely important for her to return and give back to her people here in the place she calls home. Peña will miss her friends the most, she states that at school they would get together to laugh and have fun. To Peña those were extremely memorable moments that she will have forever in her memories. She is looking forward to making new friends at the university and getting more in depth in her field of study. Peña participated in Mariachi Torros de Plata (violinist and singer), National Honor Society, church youth group member and church nursery volunteer. Her advice for next year’s seniors is: don’t stress out too much, a bad grade is not the end of world, have fun, enjoy your senior year, just work hard and you will get to where you want to go.

Carina Y. Martinez Valedictorian

Valedictorian Carina Y. Martinez is the 2019 Mission Collegiate High School Valedictorian. She is the daughter of Yadira Segura. She has been working towards being Valedictorian since she was in elementary. Martinez constantly pushed herself to get excellent grades but admits she does tend to procrastinate occasionally. She is planning to attend the University of Texas-Austin but that could change if she hears back from either one of the two top tier universities where she is currently on a waitlist. She says that once at the university, she would like to explore her options on a possible major and future career. Martinez is certain and has made very clear is that she

Melina Rivas Salutatorian

wants to positively impact the world and help people. Martinez participated in swimming, Literary Club, National Honor Society and Senior Class President, Destination Imagination team and received her associate’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. She leaves a few words of wisdom for next year’s seniors: if you are really stressed and you feel it is not going well then take a step back and just breathe. Don’t feel like the world will end. You will eventually get through it. Salutatorian The Salutatorian for Mission Collegiate High School class of 2019 is Melina Rivas. She is the daughter of Jose Salinas and Angela Torres.

The AP Scholars with Honor Award was earned by Jeremy Soto (senior) and Chelsie M. Barrientos (a member of the Class of 2018). Another student qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction. This is earned by receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams. The AP Scholar with Distinction was earned by Carina Y. Martinez (senior). Six students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. Isacc Adame (senior), Sylvia E. Cardenas (senior), Julian G. Garcia-Hernandez (senior), Mario A. Marin (senior), and Jasmine D. Martinez (senior). There was one member of the Class 2018 who earned this honor as well: Leslie A. Hernandez.

Rivas will be attending Texas A & M-College Station this fall and will study mathematics. She is excited about picking her class schedule and states that she wants to attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As for the future, Rivas hopes to become a professor one day and teach at a university in the state of Texas. The one thing she will miss the most when she leaves is her mother’s cooking, and is writing down the recipes (especially for her favorite lasagna dish). She looks forward to meeting new people at Texas A&M. Rivas participated in the National Honor Society and Senior Class. Rivas leaves next year’s seniors a few words of advice: don’t procrastinate in doing your

3rd Ranking

homework or filling out your forms to attend college. Third Ranking The Third Ranking student for MCHS class of 2019 is Adriana A. Gonzalez. She is the daughter of Gerardo and Adela Gonzalez. Her university of choice is Texas State University, where she plans to get a degree in education with a certification in English as a Second Language (ESL). Gonzalez would like to teach in her hometown of Mission. Gonzalez participated in National Honor Society as President and a Destination Imagination team. She looks forward to living in a different city and participating in community/university organizations.

MCHS students earn AP Scholar recognition

Mission Collegiate High School had a total of nine students earn AP Scholar recognition for their exceptional achievement on AP (Advanced Placement) exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous, college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement, based on students’ performance on AP exams. Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award. This is earned by receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.

Adriana Gonzalez

Mission Collegiate High School students had a special treat on Thursday, October 11, 2018, when they had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by Francisco X. Stork. He is an award-winning author that has written seven novels, one of which is The Memory of Light, that MCHS students are fond of. Stork started writing after he retired from his law career of over thirty years. “Mr. Stork shared personal anecdotes that were powerful and that resonated with many of our students. He came from humble beginnings and managed to work his way to the top by graduating from Harvard and Columbia Law School,” said Ms. Virginia Barnhart, MCHS Librarian. “He practiced law for 33 years before retiring, but his passion was always writing fiction.” According to Stork, he shared that not becoming a writer immediately after college is not something he regrets because all his experiences have helped him write his fiction today. He also in-

spired them to never assume it’s too late in life to pursue something they have always been passionate about. “I found him to be very insightful…specifically, when he shared how he would create and develop a character,” said senior Carina Martinez. “All the people he came across in his life truly did inspire so many of his characters and their attributes.” The students were excited to meet Stork since they had already been introduced to his novel, The Memory of Light, during a book talk that the library hosted and they were huge fans of the author. Stork’s book was published in 2016 and was inspired by his own experience with depression. “Meeting him was one of my highlights not only for the school year, but my entire high school experience,” said senior Jude Rodriguez. “He is one of my favorite authors and the fact that he was so real about sharing how he first became an attorney to make a living and provide

for his family then became an author much later in life, made me respect him even more.” The book which many of the students already own, starts out with Vicky Cruz waking up in a mental hospital and realizing that her attempt at suicide was not successful. She meets several people while at the facility and gets to know their stories. She realizes that these individuals are honest, kind and hardworking and they

even offer her an acceptance that she has never known before. A crisis forces the group to split up and leaves Vicky not knowing what to do. Mission Collegiate High School library collaborates with other departments within the district in order to bring in authors such as Stork at least twice a year. This allows students to meet the authors and to listen to their personal backgrounds first hand.

MCHS student earn medals at art contest

Mission Collegiate High School (MCHS) took six students to compete at the recent Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). The group returned with five gold medals for their entries. Participants included: Galilea Castro, Alondra Gutierrez, Jasmine Martinez, Jeremy Mendoza, Mariana Molina, Salem Rodriguez.
