As you navigate the future uncertainties and decisions that inevitably await you, remember to draw upon the core values and morals you have developed from your family, teachers, coaches and community. You will undoubtedly make mistakes and occasionally fall. But if your choices are founded on this strong value system, I know that you will get up and decide to do better each time. On behalf of the Sharyland ISD Board of Trustees and the staff at Sharyland ISD, we wish you the best in the next stage of your life. Javier Lopez Gonzalez Senior Class President As we started this journey on our first day of high school, I could not help but be scared and nervous of all the challenges that were yet to come. I was eager to see which classmates I would have in each class and always had something to look forward to. Whether it was time for football with all my friends or biology with those I had only just met, it was always great being alongside all of you. Every faculty member has taught me valuable lessons in academics and social conventions, as everyone comes from different backgrounds. Aside from faculty, my amazing classmates have also taught me directly and indirectly as well and I have grown into a better person from all their stories and experiences. I have truly been blessed with the honor of being the senior class president for the Sharyland High School class of 2019, for as president I’ve been able to help and inspire my classmates just as much as I also have been helped and

inspired by them. This next fall I will be attending Texas A&M University at College Station where I will continue my education. I will be studying Mechanical Engineering at one of the highest ranked engineering schools in the nation, and I cannot wait to be an Aggie. I have chosen to attend Texas A&M for many reasons such as their many traditions and their brand-new state-ofthe-art engineering facility, Zachry. At A&M I feel right at home. Everywhere you go, you will find an Aggie willing to help you with anything you may need, no matter how hard the task may be because at A&M, “there’s a spirit that can ne’er be told.” In a near future, I hope to be able to help the society of engineers with future research on how to make cheaper and more accessible resources for all, as well as helping the environment by discovering greener ways to make the earth more sustainable. Sharyland Pioneer High School’s Top 3 hope to break out into the medical field Michael James Landavazo, Valedictorian of the Sharyland Pioneer High School Class of 2019, was eager to dedicate his time in the subjects of math and science throughout high school. As the son of Nora and Brian Landavazo, Michael made sure he could learn the most and experience the most out of high school during his four years. During his sophomore year he began volunteering at C.A.M.P. University, a program for special needs adults and was heavily involved in Student Council and the National Honor Society. He was also the president of both the National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America, Senior Class Secretary, Student Council Executive Commit-

tee Member, and Captain of the Track & Field Team. With these responsibilities, Michael carried and executed within each respective group an excellent understanding of time management and the importance of teamwork. Come this fall, he plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station to major in Biomedical Sciences to fulfill his dream of becoming a pediatric oral surgeon. Madison Sparks, daughter of Kevin and Rene Sparks, developed an interest in math and science throughout high school. Besides doing volunteer work at her church with the Catholic Youth Renovation Project Madison held class officer titles, such as Freshman Class President and Class Representative for

Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year. She also had the honor of being the Senior Captain for her softball team and was Saint Paul’s Youth Group Treasurer. She will be attending Texas A&M University at College Station this fall to major in business while taking the medical prerequisite courses required for entry to a physical therapy graduate program. Her goal is goal is to obtain a doctorate in physical therapy to become a physical therapist. As the daughter of Judith and Crisostomo Regunan, Kristine volunteered her time all throughout high school at the Special Olympics, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and other places while nurturing an interest in history and science.

She served as student representative for Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and was captain of her UIL Social Studies team

this past year. She says she plans to complete her major in Health and Society and attend medical school. Currently she has

no particular medical field in mind, but says she hopes to discover her particular passion in the extensive environment that is college.

Senior Class President

Congratulations class of 2019…we did it! As the year quickly came to an end, we found ourselves relishing the time we’ve made of our high school lives. Although this is merely the beginning for what is yet to come, the years we spend here are critical for not only our academic success, but for our personal success as well. As seniors, we have grown accustomed to these halls, classrooms, clubs, teams, and every other part of our daily lives at Pioneer High. Whether we’d like to admit it or not, this is our second home. We have grown under the guidance of our staff and faculty in hopes of achieving, and superseding, every expectation they have set upon us as students, and more importantly, as individuals. However, this did not come with ease, and rather took these 4 eventful years to truly conquer. Through this journey came along laughter, heartbreak, discovery, and courage – courage to excel in our classes, courage to make new friends, and courage to believe in ourselves. It is courage that inspires us all to do more and to be better. I have no doubt in my mind that this class, filled with the most talented, athletic, intellectual, and spirited students, will continue to do the most remarkable things. As we enter this next chapter of our lives, I urge the class of 2019 to remain confident, courageous, and compassionate, for it is these qualities that speak louder than words ever could. I am honored to have been a part of this journey with you all. Thank you, and once again, congratulations.

Pictured is senior, Jaron Rodriguez, with his portrait of John F. Kennedy. The assignment was to paint a historical figure with a representative color scheme that had some sort of personal meaning. Jaron shares his inspiration for the painting by stating, “My grandfather worked under JFK in the 60’s and was part of the movement to help Mexican American farm workers earn their rights and equal pay. My art teacher, Mrs. Garcia, submitted sutdents’ works for an art showcase at the “McAllen Incubator”, a local church/creative space for artists and musicians throughout the RGV. The experience was interesting and exciting, as I got multiple offers for my art work, which I would’ve never expected. I’m proud of how I’ve grown as an artist because of this event, and I’m glad that this piece, which means so much to me, was on display for the public to enjoy as well.” Several art pieces from PHS students will also be on display at the IMAS Museum until October for our fellow artists to have similar experiences just as Jaron did.

Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy’s Top 3 Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy seniors reflect on high school achievements

Destiny Closner Valedictorian

As graduation day approaches, graduating seniors are able to take a deep breath and soak in all that they have achieved throughout their four-life-changing-years. Destiny Closner, Nayely Cardenas, and Karla Banda Juarez inhaled a lung full when they realized they had secured their spots as the top three ranking students for Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy’s class of 2019. “I was very surprised be-

Nayely Cardenas Salutatorian

cause my goal was never to be top of my class. I just told myself to do my best and see what comes of it,” said, Valedictorian, Destiny Closner (daughter of Leonel and Melissa Closner). The unassailable diligence and dedication these ladies brought forth has driven them to the height of academic excellence leading each of them to their greatest achievement yet. “As cliche as it may sound, I became successful by trying to put in 100% of

Karla Banda Juarez 3rd Ranking

my effort into every exam, assignment, and project I ever had to do,” said Nayelly (daughter of of Juan Martin and Diana Cardenas.) “Although it was hard to manage both high school and college assignments at first, I developed a study skill that worked best for me. I would try to do as much work as possible in the afternoon and go to sleep early, so I could wake up at 5 a.m. to finish my work and study. This skill helped me excel aca-

demically and, ultimately, lead me to be the salutatorian of my class.” The experiences students have throughout their four testing years ultimately reveals their ability to overcome adversity. Our third ranking student, Karla Banda (daughter of Roberto Fernando Banda Garza and Norma Eugenio Juarez Becerra), said she learned a lot about herself including the importance of having a positive attitude throughout hardships and her passion for the business world. The words of the infamously wise Aristotle echo as these young leaders come to mind: “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” Destiny, Nayely, and Karla have each proven their habitual acts of excellence, and we are proud to recognize them as the top three achieving students of Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy.

Farewell Class of 2019

Goodbye my fellow seniors. As fun as it’s been, it’s time to let go. It has been an amazing past four years of excitement, fear, doubt and true joy, but it’s time to look ahead to the future. As we screen what the world will toss in our direction, I want to wish each of you good luck. May you get everything you have ever wished for, and remember, anything is possible. As kids, Dr. Seuss told us, “Today you are you. And that is truer than true. There is no one alone that is youer than you!” Thus, never lose sight of who you are because you are perfectly you; please never forget that. Should you find yourself in need of a reminder, take a step back, breath, and reminisce about the mark you left on each one of your peers. I hope that will remind you that you are everything to someone. Always remember your roots and know we are still here for you, and that will never change. Goodbye, I hope you are blessed with all the love in the world. Thank you for all that you’ve given me, Raúl Maldonado

Upon graduation, Mariajose plans to attend A&M College Station where she will major in biology and, later, become a dentist.

As members of the Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy Social Studies UIL team, Valedictorian Victoria Bazan and 5th ranking student Destiny Closner qualified to complete in the social studies regional UIL competition along with their teammates.

Congratulations to the Pioneer Varsity Winter Guard for earning 2nd Place in the Scholastic National A Class and the Pioneer JV Winter Guard being named the Scholastic Regional AA Class Champions at the TECA South Zone State Championships at Brownsville Rivera HS . Pioneer High School was the ONLY school that had two groups in the top 2 of their class and earn a medal.

Congratulations to Junior, Joshua Gaytan, Senior, Emmanuel Acevedo, and sophomore, Christopher Flores who have earned the highest music honor a Texas band member can receive which is being named a Texas All-State Band Member. These three students performed with the best high school musicians in the state of Texas at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
