By John Hamann Finish that question yourself. I know the usual answer is football but this time of year offers other sports too and the Fall 2019 High School Sports Preview is here to offer information on all of the happenings by the Big 7 as a new school year begins. So are you ready for some football, volleyball and cross country? Here we go! Well not quite. First let’s do a quick inventory of what our Big 7 schools accomplished in the fall of 2018. The 2018 Big 7 football teams set the bar for this year pretty high. Last season five of the Big 7 schools reached the post season led by Mission Veterans impressive run to the UIL Region IV Finals in Class 5A Div. I. La Joya Palmview made a playoff appearance in the same division. Both Sharyland and Sharyland Pioneer made the post season in Class 5A Div. II. The Mission Eagles were playoff qualifiers from Class 6A Div. I. Volleyball teams from the area also had success. Three of the Big 7 were post season participants a year ago. The

Lady Patriots of Mission Veterans made it to the third round of the playoffs while both Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer were post season qualifiers. All are from District 31-5A. In cross country, three Big 7 schools from both the girls and boys teams were participants at the 2018 UIL Region IV Meet. In Class 6A, boys’ teams from Mission and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln qualified for the regional meet along with the boys from Sharyland Pioneer in Class 5A. In Class 5A, girls’ teams from Sharyland High, Sharyland Pioneer and La Joya Palmview reached the regional level. So what should we expect this year? Of course we can’t predict that but hopefully this preview will help give you a guide as each team and athlete from the Big 7 does their best to make 2019 a great year. Remember you can keep up with all of your Big 7 teams throughout the fall in the weekly print editions of the Progress Times and Sharyland Times. Expect to see information on each paper’s websites and Facebook pages too!

FOOTBALL: DISTRICT 16-5A DIV. I

While some may have not liked the way the UIL re-organized the state’s 5A football divisions before last season you probably didn’t hear either La Joya Palmview or Mission Veterans complaining. Sure the new district had 10 schools which only allowed for one non-district game and while the new configuration may have created some tougher opening round playoff matchups too, both of the Big 7 schools made the post season in 2018. Here is how each looks coming into 2019. Palmview The Lobos finished third in the new district last season with an overall re-

cord of 6-5 and a district record of 6-3. They lost in the opening round of the playoffs to Corpus Christi Flour Bluff. Three All District second team selections return to greet coach Margarito Requenez for his sixth season. They are fullback Adrian Vasquez (Sr.), Linebacker Pablo Guerrero (Jr.), and return specialist Carlos Pena (Jr.) Coach Requendez looks forward to working with a group of players who have bought into the system. He emphasized the need to get his players conditioned and keeping them healthy prior

FOOTBALL: DISTRICT 16-5A DIV. II

Much like the Big 7 teams who were placed into the Division I class of UIL District 16-5A both the Sharyland Rattlers and Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks made the most of the new re-alignment in 2018. The Rattlers went undefeated during the district part of their season and won a bi-district title before getting ousted in the second round of the playoffs by Breham. The Diamondbacks finished second in district, losing only to the Rattlers. They were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by Port Lavaca Calhoun. Here is how 2019 shapes up for both. Sharyland Graduation took a heavy toll on the Rattlers, especially on the offensive side of the ball. They return only two starters and look to replace the District MVP, the Most Outstanding Lineman and four other first team All-District selections from 2018. The Outstanding Defensive lineman graduated too as did three other defensive first teamers but six starters return for 2019 on the defen-

sive side of the ball. Eighth year coach Ron Adame does get a few decorated players back. Center Roberto Farias (Sr.), a first team All-district selection returns to anchor the offensive line while the defense welcomes back first team All-district corner Jonathon Alanis (Sr.) and second team safety Sebastian Hinojosa (Sr.). The Rattlers used spring football to begin the replacement process and Adame was pleased with what he saw. “Spring ball gave us the opportunity to evaluate and determine who our best candidates are,” said Adame. “We like the kids that showed us what their potential is and can be.” Adame and his assistants have one scrimmage and four non-district games to continue their search. Adame says this is what they always do regardless of the number of players that graduated from the previous year. “What we look for every year is we find out what the identity of this team is going to be,” said Adame. “In the bigger

scheme of things we hope to get better from week to week and peak at the right time.” The Rattlers open their season at Brownsville Pace on Thursday, August 29 and open district play at Laredo Cigarroa on Thursday, September 26. Sharyland Pioneer A much different situation greets second year coach Tom Lee when the Diamondbacks take the field in 2019. Seven offensive and seven defensive starters are back from 2018 many of whom garnered All District awards for their efforts last year. Tight end Lavar Lindo (Sr.) and tackle Sandalio Garcia (Sr.) made first team All-District and running back Tristan Castillo (Jr.) made the second team. In addition, quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger (Jr.) was the district Offensive Newcomer of the Year. On defense, Ryan Bulthuis (Jr.) was a unanimous selection to the first team as a safety. Corner Marco Oviedo (Jr.) made the second team as did defensive

tackle Erik Torres (Sr.). Senior safety Chris’mere Mallard was a District 306A second team selection who joins the team as a transfer from McAllen High. All that experience means Lee can focus on getting his team in shape since they are already familiar with what he wants done offensively and defensively. “We have a good group of seniors and we played quite a few sophomores last year so we’ve got a good group of juniors who played a lot of football for us last year,” said Lee. “It’s a good mix of kids.” The school is still chasing after their first post season victory having lost in the first round on their previous three trips. Lee thinks that could change this year. “We feel we have a good enough team to make a good run if we stay healthy.” The Diamondbacks open their season Friday, August 30 when they host Harlingen. They open district play at Mercedes on Friday, October 4.

The 2018 UIL realignment brought two new schools into District 30-6A and both put the other teams on notice that things were about to get tougher. PSJA High and PSJA North both secured playoff spots over teams that had previously been used to the post season. Of the three Big 7 schools in District 306A only Mission High advanced to the postseason last year. Neither La Joya, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln nor Mission High had spring practice at the end of the 2018-19 school year. That means an extra week of preparation in August and an extra scrimmage to get ready for the regular season. In addition each school has three non-district games and a bye week to get ready for district games. Each is scheduled to start district games the last weekend of September. Here is a look at each of the Big 7 football teams from District 30-6A. La Joya The Coyotes were one of the teams edged out of the postseason by the presence of PSJA and PSJA North, finishing fifth in district last year. Overall the Coyotes were 6-4 on the season in 2018

FOOTBALL: DISTRICT 30-6A and return about half of their starters from last year on both offense and defense. District 30-6A Co – Offensive Player of the Year Eddie Villarreal (Sr.) returns to lead the offense at running back for his senior year as do first team All-District linemen Alex Rodriguez (Sr.) and Remi Duran (Sr.). Senior Linebacker Daniel Salinas was one of three players

chosen as Defensive Newcomer of the Year for the district. Coach Reuben Farias enters his fourth season as the leader of the Coyotes and was very clear about what he wanted the team to do this season. “Play Coyote football,” said Farias. “That means being physical, fast, and tough.” Farias also stressed the importance

2019 Fall Edition

of making sure the team improves every day and taking care of the wins they needed to take care of to have success in the competitive district. “If we stay healthy it should be a good run for us,” added Farias. The Coyotes open their season Friday, August 30 hosting La Joya Palmview at La Joya ISD Stadium. They open district play on Friday, September 27 hosting PSJA at La Joya ISD Stadium. La Joya Juarez-Lincoln District 30-6A was not kind to the Huskies last season by virtue of their 0-7 record within the district. However, the fact that they were in several close games and had injuries to overcome gives coach Tomas Garcia hope for better results in 2019; his eighth year in charge of the program. “We have six starters coming back on offense,” said Garcia, “four who are on the offensive line, so we are very excited about that.” “Our quarterback (Josh Briones – Sr.) got some good playing time last year and we have a new Offensive Coordi-

nator,” added Garcia. “We’re going to change things up a little bit.” All District second team linebacker Kenth Hernandez (Sr.) returns to lead the defense. The Huskies open their season at Rio Hondo on Friday, August 30. They open district play at PSJA North on Thursday, September 26. Mission High Coach Koy Detmer returns for his fourth season at Mission after getting the Eagles to the playoffs last year. Overall the Eagles were 8-3 on the season and their 5-2 mark in district play was good for second place. Laredo United eliminated the Eagles in the first round of the playoffs to end their season. A large group of returning players who received All District honors last year could make this season even better than 2018. The vast majority of those players are on the offensive side of the ball. Sophomore quarterback Jeremy Duran was the district Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Fullback Andrew Maldonado (Jr.), tight end Rey Garcia (Sr.), and guard Steven Alvarez (Sr.) were first team selections. Receiver Steve Villarreal (Sr.), running back Horacio Moronta (Sr.) and

center Lyvan Rodriguez (Sr.) made the second team. The Eagles will also have a new Offensive Coordinator this season. Defensively, the Eagles return two district second team selections in defensive end Fabian Ahumada (Sr.) and safety Ivan Chavez (Jr.). Linebacker Justin Soto (Jr.) was one of three players chosen as Defensive Newcomer of the Year. While it may seem like district play is a long way away coach Detmer talked about the mindset that he tries to instill in his players no matter the type of game or opponent. “Whenever you take the field you want to go perform well,” said Detmer. “You want to get off to a good start.” Detmer went on to emphasize how the success of last season would factor into this one. “We want to build on that,” he said. “We want to take it further. We have a lot more out there we want to shoot for and try to accomplish.” The Eagles open their season at Mission Veterans on Friday, August 30 and open district play on Friday, September 27 when they play host to McAllen Memorial.

VOLLEYBALL: DISTRICT 30-6A

Getting to the post season was clearly on the minds of the three Big 7 volleyball coaches from District 30-5A who I spoke to a few days before each was about to welcome back their teams for the 2019 campaign. In a district that includes perennial powers like McAllen, McAllen Memorial and McAllen Rowe such a task is not an easy one. However, each of the three coaches expressed enthusiasm and optimism about their chances this year. Here is a quick look at each squad. La Joya Coach Diamantia Martinez begins her third year at the helm of the Lady Coyotes. She just missed a playoff spot in 2017 and while the team struggled to get wins last year, a large number of players with varsity experience are back for 2019. “I have a real, real positive outlook for this year,” said Martinez. “Our goal is to come into that fourth place spot. Since I have a lot of girls returning and a lot of girls with experience, hopefully this will be our year to make it.” Martinez added how that experience

will allow them to make some changes in player positioning and team defense. Two of the returning players coach Martinez singled out were setter Angie Rodas (Sr.) and outside hitter Daisy Villarreal (Sr.). Rodas made the All-District second team in 2018. The Lady Coyotes open district play on Saturday, September 14 at home against PSJA. La Joya Juarez-Lincoln The Lady Huskies are hoping to re-

bound from a tough year too. Having eight returning players should help give fifth year coach Silvia Rodriguez a chance for that elusive play-off spot. “I’m looking for my returners to really come back and tie it up,” said Rodriguez. “A lot of them weren’t starters last year but in the spring they were together and looking pretty good.” Rodriguez emphasized the start of the season as important for placing her players where they belonged to start

getting the team to work together. Rodriguez singled out senior libero Natalie Garcia as one of her key players. The Lady Huskies open district play at PSJA North on Saturday, September 14. Mission The Lady Eagles just missed out on a playoff spot last year, finishing fifth in the district. Edna Clemons is starting her 10th year as coach of the team and has a group of five returning players to start the season with. With a large number of graduated players Clemons was glad that a new UIL rule was implemented that allowed coaches time with their team over the summer. “It’s going to be a rebuilding year for us,” said Clemons. “Luckily I’ve got my setter and two middle blockers returning.” The blockers are Leslee Northcutt (Sr.) and Mayala Cantu (Jr.). Setter Alinah Hernandez (So.) was district Co – Newcomer of the Year in 2018. District play for the Lady Eagles begins at home on Saturday, September 14 when they host McAllen Memorial.

The 2018 volleyball season was a good one for the Big 7 schools from District 31-5A. Three of the four teams made the post season last year. The Mission Veterans Lady Patriots claimed the district championship followed by Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer. Here is how all four of the Big 7 schools stack up this year. Palmview Margo Iglesias – Cantu enters her third year as coach of the Lady Lobos and is hoping to make history by getting her team to the post season for the first time in school history. Seven returning players consisting mostly of seniors and juniors should give her a good core to work with. “This season I’m really excited about because they (her players) are truly my athletes.” said Iglesias. “I picked up a program from someone else but these girls are the ones that are truly mine. They are already used to me.” Iglesias added that this team knows the expectations and have been working hard over the summer. “I feel this is the year we make the playoffs,” said

Iglesias. Iglesias noted setter Briana Hernandez (Sr.), outside hitter Daniella Juarez (Sr.) and libero Melissa Menchaca (Sr.) as key members of the team as the season begins. District play for the Lady Lobos begins Saturday, September 14 at home against Sharyland High.

of the 2019 season pretty clearly when asked about it. “Our motto this year is ‘We don’t get ready, we stay ready’.” That could be a problem for the rest of -the District 31-5A and others considerzing the fact that the Lady Patriots have )not lost a district game in the last four -years. Lerma says the key to that success is the time her players are willing to put einto their game. “It’s exciting that these girls give up their summers to be committed to something they believe in,” said Lerma. “They don’t want to go four years undefeated (in district). They want to go further in the playoffs.” That may seem like a tall task considering the Lady Patriots advanced to the third round last year but Coach Lerma feels like she has the players to do it. The team returns eight players from last year including three seniors who have lettered for the varsity every year. 2018 All-District Outstanding Blocker Kassandra Lerma leads that group along with Bella Dominguez (first team All-District) and Ronnie Cantu (second team All-District). District play for Mission Veterans begins Saturday, September 14 at Rio tGrande City.

to the start of the long district campaign. “We’ll be young again,” said Requendez, “but with a lot of experience.” Requendez is hoping that the results of last season carry over to 2019. “I’m banking on that,” said Requendez. “We were a sophomore team last year and hopefully it (last season’s success) will pay off.” The Lobos open their season on Friday, August 30 at La Joya and open district play on Friday, September 6 at home against Rio Grande City. Mission Veterans No Valley football team had more success than the Patriots last season, advancing to the fourth round of the playoffs. Duplicating that will be no easy task. The Patriots need to replace a number of key components from last year’s 12-2 team that went undefeated during district play. That being said, tenth year coach David Gilpin is looking forward to 2019. “We had a great spring; we had a great summer,” said Gilpin. “We still got a couple of holes to fill; still some positions up for grabs; but we feel like we got the pieces.” There are a few returning players who received recognition for their ef-

forts last year. Receiver AJ Gonzaque (Jr.) was the district Co-Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Running back Danny Cantu (Sr.) made the first team and Freddy Trujillo (Jr.) shared second team honors at kicker. The Patriots will, however, be able to draw from a group of players who had 14 games worth of varsity experience last year along with those from the JV and Freshmen teams; both who were undefeated district champions last year too. “We’ve got a very, very good sophomore class and some really good players on that JV team that will take on roles,” said Gilpin. One of those sophomores is Ricky Reyna. He is slated to take over the quarterback duties with the graduation of Landry Gilpin. Coach Gilpin concluded that a key to this season would be how those players respond to an increase in playing time. “We had a lot of returning varsity players who weren’t starters (last year) but they are now.” said Gilpin. The Patriots open their season hosting Mission High on Friday, August 30 and open district play on Friday, September 6 at home against PSJA Memorial.

from the 2018 squad. He has six returning players to begin the process of staying in the top half of the district and, at the same time, show the rest of the league they are not content to be a second place team either. “It is a rebuilding year,” said Castillo. “We graduated good group of girls . . . a good chunk of our experience left.” “We’re hoping the six players and my new bunch that we’re able to mold them and get them ready for district,” added Castillo. “We’ve got a lot of time to get them ready and I think we’ll do a good job with them.” Castillo recognized Tristen Maddox (Sr. – first team All-District) and Ximena Chapa (Jr.) as two of the players he says will lead the team. As for playing in such a tough district with the likes of Mission Veterans and Sharyland Pioneer, Castillo said his team wouldn’t settle. “We want to show (everyone) that we can play,” said Castillo. “Our girls come in every day; they put in just as much work.” “It’s (a district title) our goal. We’re going to aim high.” Sharyland begins district play on Saturday, September 14 at La Joya Palm-

view.

Sharyland Pioneer The Lady Diamondbacks enter the 2019 season with eight returning players from a squad that finished third in the district last year and fell in the first round of the playoffs to Brownsville Veterans. Laura Cavazos begins her sixth year as coach of the team and will use the teams’ three August tournaments to fill in positions opened by graduation and to get ready for district play. “There are some positions that need to be put in,” said Cavazos. “We need to make sure we put people in the right position.” “By the end of tournament play we are hoping to have a set six (starters),” she added. “Somebody who is going to gel together; somebody who is going to push each other. People who are going to put us in a good position for district.” Pioneer does return a few notable players. Daniela Alvarez (Sr.) is a returning first team All-District middle and setter Natalie Reyes (So.) was the district Newcomer of the Year last year. The Lady Diamondbacks open district play on Saturday, September 14 at PSJA Southwest.
