‘The time has come’
Queen Citrianna 2019 prepares to be crowned By Jose De Leon III
With the ongoing 87th annual Texas Citrus Fiesta, a tradition is being kept alive by four young women meant to be the faces of the Festival. These individuals in the royal court, will be crowned at a ceremony on Thursday, January 24th. Among these individuals is Alexandria Victoria Canchola, a junior at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. The 21-yearold Edinburg native was named Queen Citrianna during the 2018 Texas Citrus Fiesta and said she has been preparing for her coronation ceremony for the last few months. However, she notes that she’s had previous experience with royalty at the Fiesta.
“I was named Princess Anna at the age of six,” Canchola explained, referring to the annual TCF junior pageant that prepares individuals for the annual TCF pageant for when they’re of age to compete in it. “So it literally feels like I’ve been preparing for the role of Queen Citrianna my whole life. There’s not a lot of people who are both Princess Anna and Queen Citrianna and it definitely helped me with familiarizing myself with the process.” Traditionally, the reigning queen of the Texas Citrus Fiesta is named the previous year so her reign can begin the following year. This gives them a chance to prepare their dress. “I’ve been in preparation for this for several months and getting everything together for the dress

Without them I wouldn’t have the dress or the crown I will be wearing.” As a junior in college, Canchola said she’s been able to balance her school work with her Fiesta preparation. “I’m not going to lie, I am getting a little antsy when I remember how my coronation is so soon,” she said. “I’m going through school and balancing this but I am truly excited and blessed for all of this to come up again. I hope to make something out of it and can’t wait for the festivities to begin. The time has come. I can’t believe it’s already been a year since I was named Queen Citrianna.” As Queen Citrianna, Canchola said she has plans to market the Texas Citrus Fiesta to a new audience. “Besides showing my face around and acting as a represen-
tative as Queen, I plan to attend more local community events, especially during the school year,” Canchola said. “The city of Mission is usually the one that markets the Fiesta, but this should be a Valley effort since the whole Valley participates. Having the Texas Citrus Fiesta in the public year-round helps set a standard for girls like me to continue being involved in it. My court and I are the face of the Fiesta and it will continue to involve girls like me. There are 20 duchesses from all over the Valley, and we should be unified in reminding people where we come from in the first place.” That reason, Canchola said, is why the Fiesta has been around since 1932 as it celebrates the local citrus industry. “It’s how the Valley got started in the first place as a powerhouse in the citrus industry,” Canchola said. “That’s why we continue to celebrate it, Mission was put on See QUEEN CITRIANNA 2019 Pg. 9

the map because of it and everything from the product costume show, the shoebox float competition and the Parade of Oranges reminds us of those values and tradition that we should continue.” As Queen, Canchola has a royal court that includes Princes of Grapefruit Blossom Katheryn Slusher, a senior at McAllen Memorial High School, Princess of Orange Blossom Kaitlyn Renae Ramirez, a freshman at Texas state University, and Lady in waiting Laisha Aimee Lopez, a freshman at the University of Texas – San Antonio. As a show of unity, Canchola said she has taken these three individuals under her wing and made herself available to them. “We’re all at different points in our lives right now and planning different things for the future,” Canchola said. “They’re all real sweet and we’re in close contact with each other. When I won last
year Laisha and Kaitlyn were right next to me when we got our titles and we knew we’d get along. It just wasn’t difficult to become more involved with them.” This is a similar relationship to the one Canchola has with Sarah Forthuber, the outgoing queen of the Texas Citrus Fiesta. Canchola said she’s known Forthuber since her freshman year of high school and that Forthuber made herself available to her after she received her title. “When I won last year, she left me a letter and a pin for my sash congratulating me and said I can call her whenever I have a question and need her advice,” Canchola said. “I definitely will be doing that within the next few days to get a little insight of what I need to take care of. “There’s many new opportunities here to create memories and experiences to share. This will definitely be an exciting year for me.”
Congratulations on being crowned Queen Citrianna LXXXII

President’s Message Texas Citrus Fiesta Invites you to our fabulous 82nd Celebration of Harvest and one of the world’s finest citrus. Through the combination of Rio Grande Valley’s moderate climate and fertile soil, our grapefruits and oranges produced here in Deep South Texas are sweeter and better tasting than anywhere else in the world. The Texas Citrus Fiesta Board of Directors contributes many long hours each year organizing and planning the many Citrus Fiesta events. The success of the fiesta would not be possible without the support of Mission Mayor Dr. Armando Ocaña, City Council, City Departments and all the countless sponsors and volunteers that assist in putting this age long tradition together. It is with sincere gratitude that we graciously offer a big Thank You for making this historic event possible. President This year, the Texas Citrus Fiesta and the City of Mission will be rolling out the red carpet and making way for a spectacular premiere of our 82nd Celebration series of events and homage to the influence the citrus industry has had on the City of Mission and the Rio Grande Valley. Come witness a sequence of regal events as King Citrus, Queen Citrianna, and Princess Anna are crowned while beautiful young ladies attired in their duchess regalia are presented as they contend for the title of next year’s Royal Court. It goes without saying that one must not miss our extraordinary Parade of Oranges. Come and join our annual historic celebration with this year’s theme: Citrus Celebrates Hollywood Movies. With the parade date approaching, float builders are putting in countless hours designing their floats based on films of eas past and present. The 3½-mile parade route begins at 3:00 p.m. and will travel south on Conway, starting on 495 and ending on 1st Street During and after the parade, the public can partake in a variety of culinary treats, crafts, Fun Fair, carnival rides, musical entertainment, along with many more traditional fiesta events all prepared for the public’s enjoyment. The theme of this year’s fiesta is “Citrus Celebrates Hollywood Movies.” Tickets are $5 for general admission and $10 for reserved seating. One of the most important events of the evening is the announcement of this year’s King Citrus, who is selected by the King’s Association. His name is a closely guarded secret that is not revealed until the night of the coronation. He will be someone who has been involved with the
citrus industry in the Rio Grande Valley. Once the king has been introduced the members of the royal court and the queen will be introduced. Queen Citrianna LXXXII was selected at the 2018 coronation so she has had a year to select her gown and prepare for her coronation. The other members of the royal court selected at that time include Princess of Grapefruit Blossom, Princess of Orange Blossom and Lady-in-Waiting. The next additions to the stage are the members of the Tangerine Court, who are six-year-old girls. They include Princess Anna, Princess of Lemon Blossom, Princess of Lime Blossom, Princess of Tangerine Blossom, and Princess of Red Grapefruit Blossom. The Duchess of Ruby Red Grapefruit will be wearing red while the Duchess of Carrot will be in orange and the Duchess of Live Oak will be in green. Grand Marshal “Tito Santana” to hold meet and greet event before Parade of Oranges Merced Solis, also known as Tito Santana, was recently announced as the grand marshal for this year’s Parade of Oranges during the Texas Citrus Fiesta. Solis, a graduate of Mission High School, was invited to return to the city by Mayor Armando O’caña. Prior to the annual Citrus Parade of Oranges on Jan. 26, Solis will host a meet and greet event. Fans of Solis, who played with the National Football League for a period with the Kansas City Chiefs and went on to become the professional wrestler known as Tito Santana, will be able to meet him from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Mission Event Center. The event is free
and open to the public. Solis graduated from MHS in 1971, where he played football, basketball and ran track. Following high school, he attended and graduated from West Texas State University, where he played football with the WTSU Buffaloes. His NFL career ended due to injury, but he continued to play football for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League in 1976. Solis decided that from there, he would make the move into professional wrestling. During his professional career he wrestled under several names, but is best known as Tito Santana. He had many accomplishments in the ring, which in-

Trent Bishop farewell letter When I was notified of my selection as 81st King Citrus, I was very surprised, humbled and excited. What greater honor is there than to be recognized by the very men that have paved the way for my career? Some of these men have mentored me throughout my career and at the very least, I hold an incredible amount of respect for all of them. As such, I received the honor with the same level of enthusiasm and respect with which it was given. Representing the Texas citrus industry over the last year has been such a rewarding experience. As it is, I live and breathe Texas citrus. Sharing the story of our industry with countless individuals at parades and events was very natural and fun for me. I was in my comfort zone. It was satisfying to see the level of excitement our float produced at all of the parades. I was also so impressed with the young ladies that served in my court. Meet the TCF 2019 Royal Court By Jose De Leon III
Queen Citrianna Alexandria Victoria Canchola will be accompanied by three princesses that will make up the Texas Citrus Fiesta Royal Court. The three individuals are from the cities of McAllen, Mission and Palmview and will begin their reign with their titles alongside their queen next week January 24, during the Texas Citrus Fiesta’s annual Coronation Ceremony. These three individuals have proven themselves to be hardworking individuals who understand the importance of Texas Citrus Fiesta. In other words, they are the perfect individuals to represent their community. Princess of Grapefruit Blossom As Princess of Grapefruit Blossom, Katheryn Slusher is the only member of the royal court who is still in high school as her fellow princesses are college students.
However, the 18-year-old senior at McAllen Memorial High School has leadership experience she says has prepared her for her role as member of the court. “I’m very involved in my school and want to focus on things where community involvement is key,” Slusher explained. As a student at McAllen Memorial, Slusher is the student council president, a district ambassador
for the McAllen school district and is a member of the city of McAllen’s Mayor Youth Association Committee, where she and other McAllen ISD students meet with the city mayor for discussions on getting the city’s youth involved in their community. Slusher is also a member of her school’s varsity track and cross-country team. “I think one of my strong suits is managing my time,” she said. “Everything I am involved in goes hand in hand with each other and better prepares me to be a leader, which is what the royal court is, a group of leaders who are the faces of the Texas Citrus Fiesta.” Community involvement is something that Slusher said she hopes to highlight after receiving her title, especially when it comes to the Texas Citrus Fiesta. “People my age are the future and since we’re in the prime of our young lives, we can make an
impact and do what we can to better our community,” Slusher said. “I want to show it’s an honor to be involved in something like the Texas Citrus Fiesta because of all the tradition and history it has here. It highlights why the Valley is so special and how our citrus industry played a role in it.” Princess of Orange Blossom For Kaitlyn Renae Ramirez, a freshman at Texas State University, it made sense for her to participate in the Texas Citrus Fiesta. After all, she explained, she is currently majoring in agriculture and has plans to become an ag teacher at the Mission school district after graduating. “I’ve studied agriculture since the 7th grade and have been attending the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges ever since I was two years old,” Ramirez, 18, said. “So to be involved in the Fiesta like I was last year and be See MEET ROYAL COURT Pg. 27

part of the Royal Court is genuinely humbling. It’s a big honor to represent my city like this.” As a student at TSU, Ramirez serves as a student body parliamentarian and is active in her college’s student council. Despite currently living in San Marcos, Ramirez said she still advocates for the Texas Citrus Fiesta. “People ask me about the pageant and I highlight how important it is to the community and that I am proud to be part of it,” Ramirez said. “These roles have
prepared me to be a leader and be more humble. Because of my upcoming title, I understand how everyone’s opinions matter and I know how to make change. It helps me know who I want to be and how I can help others.” Ultimately, Ramirez has plans to advocate for the Texas Citrus Fiesta even after her reign as a princess ends. She said she is interested in starting a project related to the citrus industry and the organization for college and, once she returns to her hometown of Mission after graduating from TSU, become a board member of the Texas Citrus Fiesta. “It’s the only way I can be more active in it even when I’m not in the royal court,” Ramirez explained. “It’s people like me who have to nurture it to make sure this tradition remains alive.” Lady -in-Waiting As the Lady-in-Waiting, 18-year old Laisha Aimee Lopez is representing her hometown of Palmview. “After I was named part of
the Royal Court, three girls from Palmview let me know that they were inspired by me to compete as a duchess this year and they did,” Lopez said. “I’m glad more people are getting involved in the Texas Citrus Fiesta and that I was a reason why.” Lopez is a freshman at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is majoring in biology. Like Ramirez, she said she advocates for the Texas Citrus Fiesta at her college. “When people find out about my title at first they zone out or

react condescendingly that it’s ‘just a pageant’ so I have to tell them it’s more than that,” Lopez said. “I fill them in on how it’s an event that takes weeks and has a lot of community involvement projects like our shoebox float competitions and the Parade of Oranges. It’s an event that the entire community participates in and I let people know that I am proud to be part of it.” Because of her involvement with the Texas Citrus Fiesta, Lopez said she will be missing school all of next week to prioritize the upcoming festivities, which include the coronation and the Parade of Oranges. “It’s devastating that I’ll miss a lot of school but this is what I signed up for,” she said. “I’ll work my way around it, I’m dedicated to the Texas Citrus Fiesta and want to continue being a part of what they are doing. I have a title to uphold. I want to be involved, it’s why I did it in the first place and I like what the Fiesta represents.”

The theme for the Texas Citrus Fiesta this year is “Citrus Celebrates Hollywood Movies,” so all the costumes and shoebox floats stuck to that idea in a variety of ways. Several categories were part of the show, including the children, teen and adult divisions in costumes and a hat competition. Keeping this particular part of the Texas Citrus Fiesta going is one of the top priorities of Sylvia Vick, who is a member of the TCF board and the Product Costume Chairwoman. “It’s a one-of-a-kind art,” Vick said. “And unfortunately, it’s a See TCF TRADITIONS Pg. 30

According to her, it is one of the last put on annually in the country. “A lot of the designers are either all repeats [who have competed and crafted costumes before], or they done it in the past and have come back,” Vick said. “We have one new designer, but her family used to do it years ago, so they’re pretty much all familiar with the show.” Costumes, shoes and accessories are covered in citrus, flowers, leaves and vegetables native to the RGV. Any part of the costume shown must be covered in dried product, and judges made their
decisions based on the overall design, use of Valley citrus product, creativity, workmanship, fit, construction of the costume, and the runway walk. Eight total costumes and four hats were entered this year, with models emulating characters and people such as Mickey Mouse, Shirley Temple, Peter Pan, Princess Tiana, Medusa, Cleopatra, Glinda the Good Witch, Ben Hur, Lightning McQueen, My Fair Lady, Little Women and Mary Poppins. Queen Citrianna LXXXI Sarah Forthuber farewell letter I remember when I was 13 years old and saw my grandad’s [Joe Metz] coronation as 77th King Citrus. I was in awe of the beauty and pageantry of the coronation – rows of duchesses in these incredible gowns, the Tangerine court, the Royal Court, and of course Queen Citrianna. That night I would have never guessed that I would be up there on that same stage years later being crowned as Queen Citrianna 81st. This past year has been an amazing experience and I am honored to be a part of Valley history. There are so many people to thank who supported me throughout the year. Thank you to the incredible Bibi Pena for my beautiful crown, handmade scepter and dedication to this won-
derful organization. Thank you to Missy Martinez for your words of wisdom and guidance along the way. Thank you to the amazing staff, volunteers and participants. Mr. Trent Bishop, King Citrus, thank you for sitting beside me and keeping me company through the heat of the Texas sun at our parades and under the stage lights at last year’s coronation. There could never be a dull moment with you girls, and I thank you for keeping a smile on my face for hours on end. During this experience I both grew as a person and strengthened ties with my childhood experiences, bringing me closer to much of my family that pours its heart and soul into the citrus industry and allowing me to better appreciate and share these values. I am incredibly grateful for this entire experience as the Duchess of Rio Red Grapefruit and Queen Citrianna 81st. Julian Alvarez III to be special guest speaker at Mayor’s International Brunch
Julian Alvarez III
The annual Mayor’s International Brunch, which will be held the morning of Jan. 26, will include a special guest speaker who has made a major impact on the Rio Grande Valley as a whole. Julian Alvarez III, who currently serves as the Commissioner Representing Labor of the Texas Workforce Commission, was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in March 2017. cation from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. Before his appointment to the labor commission, Alvarez served as president and Chief Executive Officer of the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, where he fostered relationships and coordinated programs to advance regional economic development and employment opportunities. A native of the RGV, Alvarez additionally served as a Texas regional director for U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, advising on legislative and policy issues related to South Texas. as product-making with the Texas Citrus Fiesta. This year, Irma Dillard Solis, Betty Ramirez and Nora C. Farias judged the show. “They can distinguish what the product is, they can distinguish the detail of the gowns,” Vick said. “They can tell the difference between onion and citrus. There is a criteria, they’re all familiarized with the show.” Costumes, according to the Texas Citrus Fiesta, have been featured in several other cities and the Texas State Capitol, Kennedy Center and the Cotton Bowl Parade. They have also been highlighted in the Texas Monthly and Texas Hi-ways publications, as well as other national magazines. The TCF Shoebox Float competition was set for fourth and fifth grade students from the Mission Consolidated Independent School District, La Joya Independent School District and Sharyland School District. Their criteria was Disney Spectacular Charac-
ters. Shoebox floats, made from cardboard shoe boxes and covered completely with Valley product, were presented at the Speer Memorial Library prior to their display at the Mission Community Center. They were judged on design, workmanship, use of RGV products including citrus, and the overall appeal. Chairwoman Amanda O’caña was in charge of running the Shoebox Float competition, and said she was impressed with the level of creativity from the students who participated. Both the Product Costume Show and the Shoebox Float competitions open up the Texas Citrus Fiesta traditions for families in the Mission and La Joya areas to participate in the historic event. Vick hopes they are able to inspire everyone in the area to keep the legacy of TCF alive. “I hope people find an appreciation for this art,” Vick said. “They really need to see all this work,
