A PROJECT OF INFORMATION

Planning, building and operating a modern mining and refining company is an information intensive project. Keliber and Prohoc have been partners in project information management. Prohoc has helped Keliber in evaluating and selecting the current information tools. “This has been a great partnership. Keliber has been very open in what needs and capabilities they have. We sat down, reviewed their needs and helped them to find the right information solutions and partners,” says Ilkka Palola. Despite the huge amount of research and planning data, the most information intensive phase is still ahead. The construction project of various sites and finally the operation of mines and refining factory sets a new target level for information management. And requires a set of new tools and competencies. “We saw early that there was diverse set of information needs in different life cycles of the company. Selecting the right tools and partners has brought us efficiency, usability and high-quality information management with a reasonable cost level.” Ilkka continues. These are also good targets for the next phases of building the most advanced Lithium project in Europe.

WOIMA ECOSYSTEM: an integrated optimal solution Landfill

"We bring welfare to the locations where it is OIMA can find a solution with its modular wasteWOIMA power plant to most of the customer challenges; whether it is an existing landfill or a stream of waste from other sources. What has come more and more evident is the fact that customers seek an integrated full solution that solves their problem without multiple interfaces and stakeholders. “There is waste for everyone and growing number of projects available for Finnish technology” – summarizes Henri Kinnunen, CEO

of WOIMA. WOIMAs vision is to become a platform for other Finnish technology companies, who have a value adding solution in the Ecosystem. “We see similar consortiums and competition from other European countries who often use also finance instruments on their benefit to win the sales. We have so vast and

needed the most by delivering electricity, heat and potable water with the never-ending free fuel; waste. In most cases we are able to solve the customers problems by decreasing the existing waste amounts by 97–100% compared to current situation."

Henri Kinnunen CEO WOIMA CORPORATION

Waste, in all its forms, is a growing threat to people and the environment, especially in the developing countries. At the same time, it offers new business opportunities for a growing numbers of enterprises and people. Waste as a fuel is challenging and is not stable or standard as for example gas or most common liquid fuels. Therefore, the wasteWOIMA power plant was developed to become as flexible as possible to incinerate all types and qualities of waste.

deep technological advantage in Finland in this field that it should be our joint goal to win market share by working together” Henri adds. “We have noticed that in many cases more economical solution for the end customer is to maximise the waste-to-energy percentage from their waste rather than

do only waste incineration.” Henri says. The waste is pre-sorted to separate commodities such as metal and glass from the mass and direct the organic content into the bio-gas process. Remaining waste feed, called RDF, is an excellent fuel for wasteWOIMA power plant. WOIMA ecosystem solution can integrate the bio- and landfill gas and wasteWOIMA electricity production through one combined system which reduces the Capex cost significantly while still increasing the total efficiency.

AN ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMICAL SOLUTION AGAINST MASS INCINERATION

Mass incineration in huge fixed and static facilities without any pre-treatment or recycling is still a rather common W2E solution in many un-developed countries. It’s commonly thought to be the most efficient way to make energy from waste. “This is not the case as WOIMAs modular ecosystem with combined electricity production is 30-40% more efficient CONTINUES ≥

ENABLING NEW REVENUE STREAMS

THE NEW CEO OF WOIMA:

Being the eco-friendliest solution, WOIMAs plant is also the most economical and profitable one. Typical revenue stream for the landfill operator is through waste receiving amount to the landfill, called the tipping fee. This revenue stream as dollar per ton will remain and can be even increased extensively as our solution decreases the need for landfilling to almost zero. “It is often an eye-opening experience for the customer to realise that they are literally sitting on top of a gold mine what comes to the potential of revenue they can get from their waste” – says Henri. Other possible revenue streams from the WOIMA Ecosystem are combined electricity production from biogas and wasteWOIMA power plant, potable water, pure biogas, heat, high-pressure steam, bottom ash, fertilizers, metal, glass, carbon credit and biofuel. The solution can be customized for each situation and different customer / country preferences case by case.

WOIMA AS INTEGRATOR TOGETHER WITH PROHOC

WOIMA is currently working on several development projects in several countries. These waste-to-energy opportunities draw on our decades of project delivery experience across the globe, vast cooperation network with our Finnish partner companies and our own modular waste-to-energy power plant. With our cooperation partners and the EPC capability we can generate the most out of waste by implementing also material recovery and biogas solutions. Prohocs vast experience from EPC projects globally enables WOIMA to offer projects to various locations with complex scopes. “It’s a perfect symbiosis,” says Henri Kinnunen. “We are very glad to be able to help WOIMA in their mission to save the world!” Says Iiro Wesslin from Prohoc.

Henri Kinnunen

What fascinates you the most in doing projects? Projects are always unique and have different characteristics and each project varies from another. Project manager is the person who has to cope with the different stakeholders and put together a masterpiece in agreed budget, scope and schedule with the given resources. I see it as an art form of its kind. What is the global challenge that WOIMA solves? We aim to make the world a better place with our best-in-class circular economy solutions. We bring welfare to the locations where it is needed the most by delivering electricity, heat and potable water with the never-ending free fuel; waste. In most cases we are able to solve the customers problems by decreasing the existing waste amounts by 97–100% compared to current situation. What are the main target markets for WOIMA? We are seeking growth primarily from developing countries where our most active markets at this point are in Africa, South East Asia and Latin America. Who is your customer? It varies, we are often operating with landfill operators or companies who can secure the waste feed for a long period of time. We are also negotiating about deliveries with direct investors, energy companies (IPPs) and municipalities. What kind of core team does Woima have at the moment? For now we are a small team and each person has a large variety of task on their desk, me included. We have to be agile and flexible at this stage of development of the company. This is both the beauty and challenge in start-ups, the key is to focus on right things on each day of the week. We are a quite a dynamic group consisting of COO, CTO and CPO + myself making the core team. Our COB plays also a key role in our strategic planning and decision making. How will Prohoc support you with the deliveries of the plants? Prohoc will support us with the project EPC / EPCM delivery with resourcing and project management support. Prohoc has a critical role in our growth journey. Greetings for the readers: Saving the planet is a tough job so it’s much easier if everyone plays a role and joins the movement. You can start that by following what we do in LinkedIn and other channels. I also wish You all a nice summer holiday whether it will be in sunny Finland or abroad.

NEW JOINT VENTURE: recomill

PROFITABLE RECYCLING OF WASTE STREAMS 11

Modern societies produce all kinds of wastes of municipal, industrial and animal origin. Traditionally most of these have been placed in landfills, but that road is coming to an end. We can no longer afford to squander valuable resources and rely on virgin materials instead. THE ECOSYSTEM

The RECOMILL Ecosystem combines several technical solutions to accept all the different wastes and side-streams; animal by-product rendering plant for slaughterhouse sidestreams, biogas and incineration plants for municipal and industrial waste, water treatment plant for sewage water, electricity generation from landfill gas, wind farms and solar panels etc. Not only are these solutions utilizing outside waste streams, but they also benefit from internally generated refuse. In

fact, much of the economic viability of the ecosystem is dependent on the solutions’ capability to utilize each other’s “waste”. The Ecosystem generates raw materials for e.g. animal feed, pet foods, cosmetics industry and biofuel production, but also electricity, thermal energy and clean potable water that developing societies consume in abundance.

THE COMPANY

RECOMILL has been founded as a joint venture company by two key players in the field of sustainable waste management; Honkajoki Oy and WOIMA Finland Oy. The companies have over 20 years of experience working in energy-related projects in over 100 countries across the globe, especially in the developing world. RECOMILL holds, through its owners, two of the key components in the Ecosystem solution; power generation and animal by-product rendering. This expertise and ability to deliver turn-key projects around the globe offer also other Finnish environmentally aware companies a channel towards growth via exports.

THE BENEFITS

The RECOMILL Ecosystem offers a revolutionary perspective into circular economy. Instead of being a continuous cost and a burden to both tax payers and the environment, it can turn into a wealth generating machine; an economic “perpetuum mobile”. The investment will pay for itself in a few years, while protecting the environment in the process. The Ecosystem offers a multitude of benefits on several levels. These environmental, social and economic benefits include e.g. • saving virgin raw materials • creating cleaner and healthier environment • offering excellent return on investment • creating jobs and bringing energy and clean water to the people • saving fossil fuels and reducing emissions • generating new revenue streams • increasing agricultural productivity • reducing illegally dumped waste streams

JAKAMO

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUPPLIER PORTAL AND JAKAMO? We often introduce Jakamo as a unique software solution for manufacturing companies to manage their supply chain collaboration. But what exactly is the difference with the traditional supplier portals which have been there for over twenty years? Here are the four main differences.

12

CONNECTING COMPANIES

WIDE SCOPE OF INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES

Supplier portals, often additional modules of ERP, are company-specific solutions designed for a single company, even though a mass of people from supplier companies is using it daily. External users from suppliers are logging in to the supplier portal to make actions or search information. So, supplier portals can’t establish a connection between customer and supplier because the use is based on suppliers’ individual persons. Evenmore, suppliers’ personnel may have 20 portals of their different customers which they need to login each day. Jakamo is designed for the manufacturing ecosystem – it means that any company in the ecosystem can use the solution for their own purposes. Companies are able to connect with each other by establishing a digital relationship in Jakamo. With Jakamo’s patented* networking logic, the information between customer and supplier becomes transparent, traceable, visible and real-time. Jakamo creates corporate memory between companies – if people change their jobs, information remains and won’t leave with the people.

Supplier portals are typically designed to share purchase order transactions. Customers can make their purchase orders available to ERP’s supplier portal. Suppliers can login to the portal and fill in the order confirmation and download the PO for their own use. That’s it. We know that the companies who are producing a complex industrial solution need to take care lots of more collaboration in addition to the purchase orders. Something is requested, offered, agreed, changed, claimed, audited and developed. And there is always a process behind these actions. These cross-company processes are available in Jakamo as dedicated applications. All applications are free to use for all companies who are using the platform. The wide scope of industrial processes is designed for manufacturing companies by supply chain professionals in the field of manufacturing industry. Every company using Jakamo gets the benefit from the joint system and process development made by professionals using Jakamo.

* Jakamo’s system, method and apparatus for network management based on business relationship information is granted with US Patent in 2016.

ANSSI KUMPULA

ON-GOING COMMUNICATION

SCALABLE INTEGRATION

The supply chain professionals all know that there is a strong human effect between customer and supplier. Even though the major volume of transactions would be automated, there always exist needs for changes that require communication. Especially when talking about complex delivery projects or common product development. When using supplier portal, the communication is nevertheless tackled by sending emails. It separates the data and communication in (at least) two different places, which makes change processing slow because the information is not available in one common place for all who need it. When using Jakamo you can forget the emails – the communication is covered. In Jakamo, every single PO, claim and change request have their own discussion feature. It makes the communication fast, accurate and traceable allowing the companies a hassle-free collaboration. Instead of writing electronic letters, an on-going communication makes the collaboration a way more effective.

Besides manual use of traditional supplier portals, the efforts to automatize the cross-company processes have leaned heavily to EDI type of solutions. In addition to lacking the wide scope of industrial processes and separated discussions in emails, the EDI solutions have been point-to-point investments. It’s been appropriate solution only to business relations with high volume transactions. Therefore, EDI’s are not an optimal solution for modern ever-changing agile manufacturing networks. When company integrates its ERP with Jakamo Order application, they can send POs directly from ERP to Jakamo. Supplier confirms POs as requested or with changes in Jakamo, and all confirmed order rows are updated automatically in customer’s ERP. Jakamo’s unique networking logic makes it possible to connect and utilize one, single integration with the whole supplier ecosystem. The supplier can also pull the PO’s automatically from Jakamo to their ERP through similar one-time integration. There is no need for point-to-point integrations anymore. There is no need for big investments. Jakamo provides clear API documentation, which allows a quick and smooth technical integration setup – only minor resource needed from customer company.

"Every company using Jakamo gets the benefit from the joint system and process development made by professionals using Jakamo." Jarl Matti Anttila CMO & CO-FOUNDER OF JAKAMO mob. +358 41 439 2581 matti.anttila@thejakamo.com

As a conclusion, in ecosystem economy, the value is created in business relationships between customer and supplier. The requirements for information transparency, symmetric real-time data, on-going communication and action traceability are different than 25 years ago. Supplier portals were born before there was a clear picture of these crucial requirements – that’s why they lack these crucial capabilities. Jakamo is a modern solution, which has been designed to fulfill all the requirements to execute business effectively in ecosystem economy.

NEW SUCCESS METHODS

PROHOC EMPOWERING PROJECTS 14

A vigorous delivery strategy typically drives the project’s success. Project owners can improve the success of the investment by performing an early assessment of the key objectives for the project and analyse the delivery strategies available to execute it. Project delivery is not only about the form of contract used to shift or share risks inherent in a large capital project. Project delivery is about getting a quality project done meeting the requirements of the business case and taking a lifecycle approach to make sure that the built asset continues to create value over the long-term. The challenge is that the needs base is not stagnant over the development of the complex plant investment, but those are rather redefining themselves over the development of the investment. The industry has defined various delivery strategies to deliver a project on time, quality and cost. Such strategies are grouped to A) Traditional, B) Collaborative, C) Integrative and D) Partnering. The traditional model of project delivery assumes the project owner has assigned a consulting engineer to define completely and accurately the scope and contractor(s) is hired to construct the work. Such typical project delivery methodologies are: Design-Bid-Build and Multiple Primes. Collaborative project delivery strategy involves construction professionals in the early planning and design phases of the project. Such typical project delivery methodologies are: Agency CM, CM at risk, Design and Build, EPC, and Turn key. The integrative model of project delivery is a relatively new approach with risk sharing features unlike either the traditional or collaborative models. Such typical project delivery methodologies are: Alliancing, Partnering, and Integrated Project Delivery. The partnership model incorporates design, construction and operation of a facility and is completed by one of the contracting parties for the benefit and use of another, including the general public. Such typical project delivery methodologies are: Build-Operate-Transfer, Build-Own-Operate, Build-Own-Operate-Transfer, Concession, Design-Build-Finance-Operate, Private

Finance Initiative and Public Private Partnership. The desire to understand and limit its risk by taking the project ‘one step at a time’ might lead the project owner to select a more traditional approach. An active project owner with a ‘hands-on’ approach, who doesn’t mind sharing project risk in a transparent and open manner, is likely to be more comfortable with the collaborative and integrative models of project delivery. Each project delivery method has advantages and disadvantages, some to mention, for example traditional and collaborative strategies provides sense of one-stop-shop while integrative and partnership strategies require more Owner involvement and Owner’s resources, while the latter allows Owner to control the delivery. Thus, the skill and experience of the owner’s project management resources and capabilities or lack of such resources are the factor in the owner’s selection of as suitable project delivery strategy. In order to harvest “the goodies” of the integrative strategies, could this be differently? – Yes, it could be, with Prohoc Empowering Projects. Current study issued by VTT, Pertti Lahdenperä 2017, is representing number of innovative project delivery methodologies, which are sort of “hybrids” between conventional project delivery methodologies and competitively innovative investment development phase.

FID The study introduces eight such hybrid project delivery methodologies: • Two Stage Open Book • Cost Led Procurement • Early Contractor Involvement • Early Tenderer Involvement • Novation Contract • Bridging Method • Innovative Contractor Engagement • Partial Price Selection Common nominator for all these methods is that project construction phase can be implemented with one of the traditional or collaborative project delivery methodologies. While the innovative part of these hybrid methodologies is how the development phase is managed by the Owner in collaboration with competitive setting of designer-contractor “alliances”. The advantages of the hybrid project delivery methodologies are the possibility of the Owner to refine his business requirements to the perfection and embed them to the project requirements for incentivized designer and contractor “alliance” in the realization of the project most cost efficiently and innovatively.
