Satrang Gallery is proud to host ’Five Connect’ a collaborative exhibition of 3 British and 2 Pakistani printmakers. Satrang is a firm believer in international and local collaboration we maintain that art and culture build the strongest and most interesting bridges linking people and countries. Hanna Lawson, Rose Davies and Kara Seaman, who are exhibiting at Satrang for the first time, have traveled to Pakistan to work with Zaira Ahmed Zaka and Atif Khan. They have all participated in the Zaira Ahmed Residency Program, which is now in its second year. Zaira initiated this successful residency program last year and Satrang held the exhibition ‘Double Vision’ to showcase the works produced during the residency. Satrang Gallery is thrilled to continue to support the Zaira Ahmed Residency Program and provide a platform from which to showcase the artworks of this talented and dynamic group of artists. The pieces presented in this exhibition are extremely strong; the partnerships between these printmakers have pushed them to perfect their craft. I would like to congratulate the artists for this fantastic ensemble of work, and Zaira Ahmed Zaka for another successful Residency. Satrang looks forward to continuing to support the Zaira Ahmed Residency Program. Asma Rashid Khan Director
Zaira Zaka Studio Residencies was established in 2013 to facilitate cross cultural exchange programs and build bridges between countries through collaborative exhibitions and the sharing of artistic practices and techniques. The studio’s program of residencies and exhibitions promotes the art and culture of Pakistan internationally while developing relationships with artists and galleries across the world. The new purpose built studio has a variety of facilities with premier quality printmaking supplies and equipment that allow artists to develop their practice in an environment that conforms to international standards of excellence, offering them studio access around the clock from the adjoining residential quarters. In 2013 together with Satrang Gallery, Zaira Zaka Studio Residencies curated ‘Double Vision’, an exhibition featuring six artists from Nepal, The Netherlands and Pakistan; Nan Mulder, Gea Karhof, Ragini Upadhyay, Atif Khan, Sophiya Khawaja and Zaira Zaka. The huge success of the exhibition strengthened bonds between Studio Director, Zaira Zaka and the Satrang Gallery Director, Asma Khan, which led to the organization of regular international shows. This current exhibition, Five Connect, features artists from the UK and Pakistan; Kara Seaman, Hannah Lawson and Rose Davies from Scotland and Wales and Pakistani artists Zaira Zaka and Atif Khan. The residency provides the participating artists with the opportunity to work together in a friendly and mutually supportive environment, exchanging ideas and building a connection between two countries that not only share a sometimes troubled history but continue to develop a positive future. This collaboration between Zaira Zaka Studio Residencies and the Satrang Gallery provides a unique cross cultural focus for printmakers both in Pakistan and the participating countries, fostering understanding and helping artists to show their work to new audiences. It is hoped that this will be the start of a long and successful relationship.

Rose Davies Scribbler & Printmaker Lives and works Swansea, Wales, UK Graduating from Art College at the end of the 70’s, Rose Davies has continued her art practice with her belief in traditional art values and particularly drawing, intact. Majoring in printmaking, she continued to draw after leaving college, but like many other struggling young artists in Britain at that time she developed a secondary career, spending many years working with drug and alcohol dependent people, the homeless and those with criminal behavior, during which time she gained a Masters in Education. During her residency in Pakistan, Rose explores the relationship between people and place, sometimes portraying humanity and at other times looking at the impact of people on the spaces they inhabit. Working primarily within the print media of monotype, drypoint and block printing, her work is underpinned by a disciplined approach to drawing that she publishes in a daily art blog at www.scribblah.wordpress.com

Zaira Ahmad Zaka Artist & Curator Lives and works in Rawalpindi Zaira Ahmad was born in 1974. A graduate from National College of Arts, majored in Printmaking. She has exhibited extensively across Pakistan, UAE, Malaysia, U.K , China and North America. She dedicated her towards art education since she graduated in 1999, exemplified by student exhibitions, workshops and projects. In 2013 Zaira Ahmad was selected among the five artists to attend Pakistani Artist Residency in China. ‘Zaira Zaka Studio Residencies’ program is established in 2013 by Zaira Ahmad to promote the medium of Printmaking through cross cultural exchange programs by inviting artists from different countries. Two successful residency programs include artists from Nepal, UK, Netherland and Pakistan followed by their work exhibited at Satrang Gallery in 2013 & 2014. Zaira’s works are in permanent collection of ‘Art Works’ Dubai, Civil Aviation Department Dubai Airport, China Cultural Ministry Beijing, Pakistan National Council of Arts and various private collections. In 2010 she co-created ‘EducateOne’ that supports the education of many and is based upon the idea that ‘No child is left behind’. Her work depicts the situations through which She is passing, which varies from time to time and place to place. It shows the phases as peace after every storm, a colorless leaf till a flower blooms. She work around the times before, through and after any certain event of life. She always tries to capture different emotions that are personal but are present in every human being without the restriction or boundaries of culture, region or language.

Hannah Lawson
My qualifications centre around literature; I achieved a Distinction for my MA in Creative and Media Writing in 2006, and I was awarded an unpublished writers’ bursary from Literature Wales in 2012. My visual and literary work are constantly influencing and informing one another, such as prints containing Viking iconography which I found during my bursary research in Denmark, and the Dylan Thomas Dialogues print which was a visual response to American author Maggie Shipstead’s novel Seating Arrangements. I was delighted to discover that Maggie Shipstead herself wants to buy a copy of this print before the exhibition has even opened. My preferred printmaking techniques are currently three colour monotype and screenprinting, but I have also worked in monoprinting, etching and relief printing. Although I am fairly new to printmaking I have explored a large number of techniques and had a very intense learning and creating period, allowing me to exhibit prints nationally and internationally in 2013. I will be exhibiting in Swansea Print Workshop’s Dylan Thomas Dialogues exhibition opening in February, and my editioned work is also featuring in the project’s limited edition boxed set. I have also developed bookbinding skills as part of the project, making artist books. Prior to my interest in printmaking I exhibited and sold photographic and multi-media work in a variety of exhibitions including The Emblem of my Work at http://www.emblemofmywork169.blogspot.co.uk/ , and exhibited an installation piece. Exhibitions (Group) Upcoming: Dylan Thomas Dialogues, touring exhibition opening Ceri Richards Gallery 2013/14 Public Gesture:2nd Rocky Mountain Printing Symposium Alliance, Boise, Idaho 2013 The Industrial Valley: Annual Members’ Exhibition, Cynon Valley 2011 The Emblem of My Work, Shandy Hall, Coxwold, Yorkshire 2010 After the End, Elysium Gallery, Swansea 2009 Facing the Future, Elysium Gallery, Swansea 2009 Women Centre Stage, Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea 2009 Summer Open, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea As well as contributing as an artist, I also worked for the project in Events and Administration; organizing events and speakers to inspire the artists and help them interpret its theme. I have been working in the heritage and arts sector for seven years with a variety of responsibilities, including freelance projects both in Wales and internationally, and enjoy being an ambassador of Welsh arts, literature and heritage which I’m also involved with as a member of National Museum Wales’ Advocacy Forum and the Swansea Arts Marketing Network. I am fascinated by other cultures and love to visit new countries. As a child I grew up in Botswana, Africa, and as an adult I am a keen traveler and have visited Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Malaysia, Tunisia, Ukraine and travelled interrailing alone across Western and Central Europe. I have also developed many international working partnerships in arts and heritage through my literary, artistic, archaeological and museum-based work. In 2010 I became involved with an international project called Promoting Early European Photography, or PEEP, whose aim was to explore and exhibit early photographic collections across three countries; Iceland, Slovakia and the UK. I had been approached through the workshops and celebrations I had done about the photography of John Dillwyn Llewelyn and about my knowledge of his work, and began working on the project. As part of my work I visited the other participating countries, learning about their photographic heritage and sharing my own areas of interest from Wales. I then assisted in assembling the final exhibition of the project in Swansea, hosting the curators and learners from Iceland and Slovakia during their visit, and curating a display to narrate my surprise finding of the project - a portrait of my own great-grandfather which had unexpectedly turned up during our visit to Iceland! I have also worked with a number of experts and curators during my literary research trip to Denmark as part of my bursary, and recently was a guest of the NEMO festival at Le Cube gallery in Paris with my partner, whose short film had been chosen for a project with the Paris Conservatoire to compose a new soundtrack and perform it live at the festival alongside the film-maker.

I-pad Project in Schools, Lead Artist. I was one of Several Artists to take part in a pilot project in schools in Swansea, developing ipad drawings with high school pupils-in Pentrehafod high school, which were then made into screens and screenprinted by the young people into sets of prints. Kaleidoscope ‘I, Me, Mine Project’. Project Co-ordinator.
he Kaleidoscope group came about from Gwil Vol’s last set of young volunteers. They were a very enthusiastic group and formed themselves into the arts group ‘Kaleidoscope’ As a group they applied for and received funding to run a print-Collagraph project for other young people looking at self and identity. Kaleidoscope provides them with training in the technique and encouragement to organise their own exhibition and opening event. I co-ordinated the group’s projects and meetings, providing them with support and advice about projects and printmaking, administration, exhibition set up and everything else in between! 2010-11 Gwirl Vol: Young Volunteers Print Project. Lead Artist. worked alongside another artist and administrator putting together a project encouraging young people to become involved in volunteering within the arts in Wales. We encouraged a small group of young people, four community artists and two artist administrators to develop a printmaking art project. As well as learning printmaking techniques and administrative procedures the young people taught these techniques on to other groups in a community setting. All work produced was exhibited at Swansea Print Workshop in February 2011. 2010 New Creative Dialogues, Swansea Print Workshop. Workshop Leader. I worked alongside a team of outreach printmakers taking the ‘New Creative Dialogues’ project into schools, teaching children and young people about colour mixing and drawing from life which culminated in screen printing their drawings and colours which were bound into a book. 2008-09 Printmaking Internship Project. Workshop Leader. Rose Davies My art practice Scribbling – a compulsion to draw I have been drawing since I was a tiny child; a sketchbook is my constant companion. I have never wavered from my conviction that several thousand years of European artistic tradition cannot be wrong. Far from just being practice pieces, drawings are works of art in their own right. Throughout a long tradition from Leonardo da Vinci, through Egon Schiele and onto the comic book renaissance of the 1980’s and 1990’s, drawings have expressed artists at their most raw and uninhibited. I draw directly from the world around me, taking inspiration from the fast-moving cityscape and the teeming life within it and I am heavily influenced by my work with marginalised groups, looking at the extraordinary within the ordinary. I keep up my professional practice and development in drawing, recently completing three year’s part-time study of life drawing with established artists in order to force myself out of my comfort zone. I also draw regularly with the ‘Thursday Night Life Drawing group’ at Swansea Print Workshop.
Printmaking My drawings form the basis for my work in fine art printmaking. I specialise in the three colour separation monotype technique, a drawing-based approach favoured by the Impressionists, particularly Degas and Monet. Renaissance drawing technique underpins my ongoing series of photopolymer plate etchings. I explore maniere noire and chiaroscuro in my block printing where I usually use discarded materials - various wood products and recycled signwriters’ foamboard. My drawing practice is also central to the development of large scale mixed media pieces, building layers of monotypes, screenprint and drawing to produce unique pieces.
The human form There is a long tradition in Western art of representing the human figure, but the way in which the body is viewed has changed through the ages, sometimes venerated, sometimes reviled. Currently, the nude appears to be out of favour in Western art and seems to have the capacity to shock. Traditionally, male artists have taken the lead in representing the human body, but in the early 21st century, there is an opportunity for a female interpretation and a feminine / feminist viewpoint, interpreted through intense personal and cultural influences of the past three decades. In an age where many seek
to alter their looks artificially, wiping the hard-won marks of their lifelong endeavours from their faces and bodies, I revel in scrutinising the human figure and reflecting the experiences written all over it.
Social engagement I am committed to making art available to people who would not normally participate and am involved with 12:thirty four, a group of socially engaged artists, working with young homeless people and I am a part-time tutor with Swansea University, delivering art-based interventions to substance misusers . I am also a member of 15hundred lives, a group of artists committed to bringing art to city centre venues to engage with a wider public. As Rosie Scribblah, I am an active blogger with an international readership, writing a daily illustrated blog, using my sketchbook drawings as source material. In the recent past, I curated exhibitions at The Brunswick, Swansea’s original arts pub, bringing quality contemporary art to a new audience.
