Issue no.1, August 2009 - Prejmer Summer School
Welcome
Wake Up, PREJMER! Summer is a time for fun and play, a time for kids to be kids and enjoy the pleasures of warm weather and free time. Summer can also be a time for reflection and exploration. As Projects Abroad volunteers working with the students in Prejmer, we had an opportunity to experience both the fun and excitement of the children as well as their more thoughtful adventures. With our positions as journalists, we understand the importance of being able to reflect on our thoughts and ideas. Working with the children of Prejmer has been a wonderful privilege and we have greatly enjoyed watching them craft their ideas into imaginative stories and deep reflections of their thoughts. We hope you will share our appreciation for their creative writing and join us in our inaugural issue of Wake Up, Prejmer! by Jialin Guo
Meet the Team My name is Rafael Apafi. I am fourteen years old and I am a friendly, chill boy. I like to play football and listen to rock and reggae music. That’s me! My name is Alex Rucareanu. I’m twelve years old and I like graffiti because it’s creative. In the magazine I will write an article which shows I am passionate about graffiti. My name is Andreea Dobrinas and I am thirteen years old. I like football and dancing. I also like photography. I chose to be a part of this project because I like writing stories. My name is Codrut Nicolae Stelea and I am ten years old. I like sports, but my favorite sport is swimming. I also wrote an article about it. I really enjoyed the Journalism project. My name is Ioana Calnegru, and I am 13 years old. I like reading adventure books, that’s why I chose to write my own story together with Andreea.
The Dream Far away in a village called Clairee, lived a boy named Billy. He was raised by his grandparents, since his parents died in a car accident. Billy was worried because his grandparents were poor. One day in winter, Billy decided to run away because his grandparents did not have enough money for him. The next evening, Billy took food and water and went into the woods. The woods were dark and cold. Billy could not see anything, but he could hear the howl of a wolf. He was scared so he ran into the heart of the forest. Billy fell down because he was tired. He dragged himself to a tree and fell asleep there. The next day, Billy was found by an old man. This old man took him home to his grandparents and told them what happened. Then, Billy woke up and realized everything was just a dream. by Andreea Dobrinas and Ioana Calnegru
Graffiti I discovered my passion for graffiti when I switched from Prejmer’s school to a school in Brasov. In Brasov I met a graffiti artist who told me how things were. He taught me how to draw with spray paint and he taught me which spray paints were better to use and how to sketch and many other things. Some people don’t understand the graffiti art, but for me graffiti is simply just that - an art form. by Alex Raducanu
by Codrut Nicolae Stelea I was four years old when I learned to swim. I taught myself to swim. I like to swim under the water. I usually goto the pool, and I would like to do it everyday. I dream to one day be able to swim with a shark, but not just any shark, I will swim with a Great White. I interviewed a friend about swimming: Question: How old were you when you learned to swim? Answer: I was five years old when I learned to swim. Question: Why do you like it? Answer: I like to swim but I feel like a dolphin.
Five Steps to Learning How to Swim 1) When you are in deep water you must stay calm so that you don’t go under. 2) To swim you must bring your arms up over your head. 3) Then you must bring your arms down into the water with your fingers cupped. 4) When you swim you must kick your legs. 5) When you are swimming you must breathe calmly. Have Fun!
I Like Hiking! by Rafael Apafi In this world, stress affects everyone. Too much stress can make people forget to have fun. A good way to relieve stress is to go hiking. You can simply go out for a walk in the park, or you can go outside on your bicycle. You can go hiking alone, but what I would recommend is that you go hiking with your friends or your family (or both). In my town Prejmer, the adults don’t get out very much, and I think this is a bad thing! For example, when I am hiking with my friends, or when I am riding on my bicycle, after I come home, I feel much more relaxed and I fall asleep more easily. I have read that it is good for your heath to walk in the park when you have the time. If you walk in the park regularly you can become an athlete. My favourite time to go hiking is during sunset, at around 7 to 8 p.m. This is my favourite time because the sky is very beautiful when the sun sets. A place that I like to hike is a park that is near my home. I do not know what the park is called, because it has no name. I like to hike there because there are a lot of children that play there and it is a meeting place for me and my friends. So, if you want to relax or have fun, then please go hiking or even just take a walk. You can forget about your job and your problems. Be free!
Joke! Why did the blonde pour water on the keyboard? She wanted to surf the internet.
