An important part of the State Secretary of Culture’s mission is to identify and bring the public the best of the state, the country and the world’s cultural production, opening in our cultural spaces an access channel for the city’s population. This is demonstrated by examples that reflect the commitment of the Government of Rio de Janeiro to offer a plural, broad and differentiated quality program. That’s the case with HAPPENINGS at Casa França-Brasil (CFB), a set of collective actions that results in sound performances curated by Batman Zavareze, master of establishing healthy collision routes between distinctive artists and languages, and Secretary’s partner in many other initiatives such as Rio Occupation London in 2012. This invigorating dialogue provided a sample of what is done today in contemporary art through the interaction of different artistic visions. ADRIANA SCORZELLI RATTES State Secretary of Culture
Parte importante da missão da Secretaria de Estado de Cultura é identificar e trazer para o público o melhor da produção cultural do estado, do país e do mundo, abrindo em nossos espaços culturais um canal de acesso para a população fluminense. Isso é exemplificado por mostras que refletem o compromisso do Governo do Rio de Janeiro de oferecer uma programação plural, de qualidade, ampla e diferenciada. É o caso da realização de HAPPENINGS na Casa FrançaBrasil (CFB), um conjunto de ações coletivas que resultam em performances sonoras, com curadoria de Batman Zavareze, mestre em estabelecer saudáveis rotas de colisão entre linguagens e artistas diferentes, e parceiro da Secretaria em tantas outras iniciativas como a Rio London Occupation em 2012. Esse diálogo revigorante proporcionou uma amostra do que hoje é feito na arte contemporânea, através da interação de diversos olhares artísticos. Sustaining the proposition to promote different artistic languages and expression forms, Casa França-Brasil invites producer Batman Zavareze to occupy the 1820’s neoclassical building with HAPPENINGS project - collective actions involving performances, space for dialogues, poetry and experimental sonorities. With three editions at Casa França-Brasil (2010, 2011 and 2013) probing assorted media, formats and a transversal perspective, the project presents in a spontaneous and plural way, an overview of what is most interesting and relevant in Rio de Janeiro’s contemporary art scene. As an architecture for the senses, HAPPENINGS displays itself as a movement that delivers to Casa FrançaBrasil’s audience, a dynamic and multiple concept in a pattern that convey experiences. Mantendo a proposta de divulgar diferentes formas de expressão e linguagens artísticas, a Casa França-Brasil convida o produtor Batman Zavareze para ocupar o prédio neoclássico de 1820 com o projeto HAPPENINGS - ações coletivas que envolvem performances, espaço para conversação, poesia e sonoridades experimentais. Com três edições na Casa França-Brasil (2010, 2011 e 2013), o projeto apresenta um panorama do que há de mais interessante e relevante no cenário da arte contemporânea do Rio de Janeiro de forma espontânea, plural, utilizando diversas mídias, formatos e olhares transversais. Como numa arquitetura dos sentidos, HAPPENINGS se manifesta como um movimento e leva ao público da Casa França-Brasil um conceito múltiplo e dinâmico, num ritmo que conduz experiências.

The term “happening” refers to collective actions, possibly combining visual and theatrical elements with spontaneity and improvisation, and most of the time, with audience’s participation. The roots of happening goes back to the Dadaist and Futurist performances which took place from 1910 onwards, and developed into what is called the art of performance. John Cage, the musical composer who experimented with new musical perception, is responsible for the Theatre Piece # 1, or simply, “the event”, held at Black Mountain College, in North Carolina, U.S.A., in 1952, which is considered the first happening in the history of art. During “the event”, M. C. Richards and poet Charles Olson read poems on the staircase while David Tudor improvised on the piano and Merce Cunningham danced amongst the audience. Hanging from the ceiling, a painting by Robert Rauschenberg portraying an old vitriol played the music Edith Piaf. Coffees were served by four young white men. Cage, sitting, read a text that related music to Zen Buddhism, sometimes the reading was out-loud, at others, in silence. The spectacle appeals simultaneously to all the senses: seeing, hearing, tasting and touching. Besides this, it involves all the mentioned artists and other participants who quite randomly interfered in the scene. Kaprow inspired himself in the event held by Cage and conceived his first spectacle, the 18 Happenings in 6 Parts, in 1958. Cage is one of his masters, most of all because of his ideas about chance and indetermination in art. In 1963, Wesley Duke Lee held in São Paulo the first happening event known in Brasil. Besides cinema, music and dance, the action combined a sarcastic homage to the critic and an exhibition of a series of drawings entitled “Ligas”, to be seen using flashlights in the dark.
EXPERIMENT_PROVOKE_REFLECT_RISK_INSPIRE_LEARN_IMPROVE_OVERCOME_EVOLVE_PROCEED The HAPPENINGS project rises and extends itself at Casa França-Brasil, then passes through Helio Oiticica Cultural Center (2012) and seals a full synergy partnership with Panorama Festival (2012 and 2013). The HAPPENINGS project promotes synesthesia. The HAPPENINGS project occupies the present time with collective actions using assorted languages and formats to demonstrate in a spontaneous and plural way, a snippet of the contemporary art scene.

The HAPPENINGS project consists of artistic interdisciplinary collaboration. This book records the extreme route of trials in this project’s sequence of HAPPENINGS. The intention is to sow unpredictable outcomes. BATMAN ZAVAREZE Curator

O projeto HAPPENINGS ocupa o tempo presente com ações coletivas que mostram um recorte do que há no cenário da arte contemporânea de forma espontânea e plural, utilizando diversas linguagens e formatos. DISCUSSÃO_EXPOSIÇÃO_PERFORMANCE SONORA POESIA_DISCOTECAGEM O projeto HAPPENINGS se pauta por colaborações artísticas interdisciplinares. Este livro documenta a extremada trajetória de experimentações nesta sequência de HAPPENINGS.

“Rafael Cardoso: Bom, boa tarde para todos, eu sou o Rafael Cardoso. Os nossos convidados são Raul Mourão, artista plástico; Eucanaã Ferraz, poeta; e vamos discutir exatamente a questão do happening. … Qual é o sentido de fazer um happening nos dias de hoje? Onde estamos em relação ao improviso e o risco de levar o corpo das pessoas para dentro da arte e a arte para o corpo das pessoas? Vou começar com um pedido. Eu sei que estamos numa era em que as pessoas estão o tempo todo conectadas, não é? Eu tive, na semana passada, a experiência de ir a um simpósio na Ilha Grande, onde ficamos três dias sem celular, sem internet, sem televisão, sem nada a não ser as outras pessoas. É uma experiência estranha não estar conectado e estar completamente presencial. Acho que ela só foi suportável porque sabíamos que eram apenas três dias. Se fosse uma situação permanente, talvez não tivéssemos curtido tanto. Então eu vou pedir como uma primeira demonstração de boa fé, que as pessoas façam uma experiência de privação sensorial completa e desliguem seus celulares. É um primeiro gesto de imersão na presença…”

“Rafael Cardoso: Well, good afternoon to everyone, I’m Rafael Cardoso. Our guests are Raul Mourao, artist; Eucanaã Ferraz, poet; and we will exactly discuss the issue of ‘happening’. … What is the point of making a ‘happening’ these days? Where are we in relation to improvisation and the risk of bring people’s body inside art and art to people’s body? I’ll start with a request. I know we’re in an era where people are connected all the time, isn’t it? Last week, I had the experience of going to a symposium at Ilha Grande, where we stayed three days with no mobiles, no internet, no TV, nothing except other people. It’s a strange experience not to be connected and be fully face to face. I think it was bearable because we knew we would be there for just three days. If it were a permanent situation, we might have not enjoyed so much. So as a first demonstration of good faith, I’m asking people to do an experience of complete sensory deprivation and turn off their mobiles. It’s a first gesture of immersion in the presence…“
