Capital Expansion Programme

Mobile crane hire company Johnson Crane Hire has taken delivery of a Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 750 ton mobile hydraulic crane — the biggest mobile hydraulic crane in its fleet and one of only two cranes of this size to be put into operation in South Africa to date. The new crane is part of a multi-million rand expansion programme that has seen new cranes being purchased and older units within the company’s crane fleet being replaced and upgraded over the past few years. Today Johnson Crane Hire offers a full range of crane equipment from 8 ton to 750 ton hydraulic capacity and crawler cranes from 110 to 750 tons, as well as mobile tower and compact city cranes. Other recent additions to the heavy lift fleet include two 275 tonners to boost capacity in the country’s more outlying areas and a new 220 tonner deployed to Rustenburg to replace an older 275 tonner. Several 140 tonners have been purchased to replace older 120 ton cranes as well as a whole range of 100, 70 and 60 tonners, totalling about 60 new units.

of the fast growing local wind energy industry. Typically, a 550 ton hydraulic crane is limited in terms of what types of turbines are likely to be erected in South Africa. The new 750 tonner will allow us to handle certain wind turbine generators and meet the requirement to move relatively quickly between hard stands, as it can be stripped and reassembled fairly quickly. “In today’s crane industry, the cheapest solution does not necessarily deliver the best value for money. Our commitment is to provide a value added solution to customers’ lifting requirements that includes the latest technology, as well as all the necessary risk assessments and rigging studies, with lifts carried out by fully-qualified operators. World’s Largest Telehandler

Eazi Sales & Service has introduced the new Magni Telescopic Handlers range of telehandlers, which includes the largest telehandler in the world. Featuring a 30-ton capacity, a 12-metre lifting height and a 16-ton tyre handler attachment, the range’s biggest machine – the Magni HTH30.12 – is set to become a major game-changer in local industry, providing the capability to lift, manoeuvre and handle unprecedented load capacities. The introductory range also includes a 5-ton capacity, 26-metre lifting height, rotating telehandler, comprising unique and patented technology. Says Eazi Sales & Service’s managing director, Larry Smith, “We are confident that the range will offer mining and heavy industrial customers a unique handling solution that includes a variety of mining attachments, such as tyre and cylinder handlers.” One of the most innovative features of the range is its unique RFID system which helps the telehandler to instantly recognise the attachment being connected. This allows the on-board computer to automatically calculate and enable the relevant load chart, which limits the boom to within safe working envelopes. The telehandler also automatically weighs any load, which automatically prevents overloading or extending the telehandler outside of the recommended envelopes – substantially reducing the responsibility of the operator. Eazi Sales & Service, Larry Smith Tel: 086 100 5540, Email: larry@eazi.co.za www.eazisales.co.za

“Our expansion programme ensures that our fleet remains fit for purpose, reliable and safe in order to meet our customers’ high safety standards and required turnaround times,” Peter Yaman, general manager of Johnson Crane Hire’s Heavy Lift Division says. “We’re also investing in the bigger equipment to meet the requirements

Self Retracting Lanyard MSA Africa’s fall protection product manager Emmanuel Manaka notes that the MSA Workman SRL is ideally suited to improve worker comfort and safety in numerous applications, including oil and gas, petrochemical, construction and general industry. According to Emmanuel, the MSA Workman SRL boasts a 181 kg working capacity for increased versatility. "An integral, ergonomic carrying handle allows for easier transport and installation, while radio frequency identification (RFID) technology ensures simplified product tracking and inspection at all times." The housing is manufactured from impact-resistant thermoplastic, while the bumpers are comprised of impactabsorbing thermoplastic rubber. The lifeline is manufactured from a 5mm galvanised steel or stainless steel cable, with tension starting at 6.7 N. "The MSA Workman SRL weighs less than 5kg, and has a standard line length of 10m, with a minimum breaking strength of 13.3 kN." What's more, it has a maximum arresting distance of 1.4 m for workers weighing between 142 kg and 181 kg. "Comprehensive tests have also proven that the average arresting force of the product is 4 kN for workers weighing between 34 kg and 141 kg, and under 8 kN for workers that weigh between 142kg and 181kg." Purpose-built Cabling

A new breed of cables for earthworks and mining operations is able to withstand harsh outdoor conditions and tough mechanical conditions while delivering ultra-reliable performance. Manufactured in Germany by Helukabel, the range includes a variety of purposebuilt cables that have been specially manufactured for various tasks on the mines, from the mine face, to the main operation and beyond. According to Helukabel South Africa MD, Doug Gunnewegh, some of the latest advances in cables for mines include

extreme torsionally stiff cables. These are used for reeling medium voltage power supply to heavy equipment such as cranes or large mobile equipment, as well as excavators in the mining industry. It allows faster reeling speeds for better production output, while the purposebuilt construction improves reliability and minimises downtime as a result of breakages or damage. Tough and Powerful Designed and tested rigorously to Caterpillar specifications, Cat Premium High Output (PHO) batteries are built for the toughest jobs and the harshest climates, delivering dependable and consistent start-up. “PHO applications cover Cat earthmoving and power generation systems, meeting demanding specifications to provide a Cold Cranking Amp (CCA) capability up to 1500 CCA, and maximum vibration resistance,” explains Barloworld Equipment group product specialist, Reuben Phasha. Due to their high CCAs and reserve capacities, Cat PHO batteries claim the highest performance ratings in the industry. That equates to vibration resistance levels that are five times the industry standard and easier starts because less capacity is used.

to simulate the most demanding field conditions, which requires batteries to recover to 25 charging amps within 20 minutes and meet industry electrical performance standards. The associated 30 day complete discharge test demands batteries recover to 25 charging amps within 60 minutes, after being completely discharged for 30-days.
