ngineers receive a broad education in the nuts and bolts of machinery, equipment and systems but not much attention is paid to the commercial aspects of running an engineering concern.
“Engineering World”, a new annual publication being produced by Promech Publishing, in co-operation with the SACEEC (SA Capital Equipment Export Council), will serve to make financial and commercial decisions easier for engineers to make. The publication will focus on the export market but also on local content as a reliable tier of suppliers and supplier industries is vital to local manufacture. SACEEC will share its experience and expertise on a variety of elements that must be taken into account to become a successful exporter, such as:
Freight forwarding Tax matters Forward cover Deciding on what to sell to whom The culture and customs of the export destination country Building a robust supply chain The financial implications of exporting Marketing internationally Building a presence in the destination country Getting the correct legal advice. The SACEEC has assisted many companies in navigating the pitfalls of going over our borders. They remain committed to growing South African exports and have generously agreed to share their knowledge with the readers, in the interests of the country and our economy.
Eric Bruggeman, MD of SACEEC: “What you didn’t think to
ask? We trust that this first-of-its-kind publication will prompt capital equipment companies, who are contemplating the export route, to ask the right questions before setting off on what can only be described as an exciting and potentially lucrative journey.”

seat on which a driver is sitting if they fall asleep.
Driver fatigue is a factor in 10 to 20% of crashes worldwide. It affects driving in various ways, including slowed reaction time and lack of concentration. If your reaction time is just half a second slower while driving only 40km per hour, it will take two car lengths longer to stop. The MD of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says, “Research conducted by the Interdisciplinary Accident Research Centre in South Africa, says driver fatigue is one of the main causes of truck crashes with 41% of accidents being fatigue related. ” If you encourage your drivers to take

It uses algorithms, sensors and cameras to track eye and face movement and consequently notify an alarm system if the driver appears to be falling asleep or if they are driving in a distracted fashion. The sensors are not only linked to alarms within the cab but to a control centre which alerts the fleet manager to take necessary steps to assess the driver’s concentration levels. Increased Lifespan Rio-Carb recently fitted R-C700 liner plates to Danoher Construction’s R3.9million Volvo 30-ton dump truck. Due to their impressive hardness, the R-C700 CrC liners were installed to prolong the life of the original truck bin – which is known to withstand approx 10 000 hours of unloading – by six times. Rio-Carb product development manager, Luis Garcia explains that during unloading, the rear section of a dump truck bin receives the greatest amount of wear from severe sliding abrasion. The R-C700 CrC liner plates, with a hardness of between 56 and 58 Rockwell C, act as a barrier to protect the truck bin from corrosion and wear due to the abrasive silica they carry. “The truck loads silica sand, which is used for a variety of industrial processes such as creating moulds and casts, glass manufacturing, water filtration or producing concrete. The mine then takes it off to the processing plants.”
This is the first time Rio-Carb has designed and fitted a truck with liners, but the company was able to finish the project within a week, which included getting approval on the actual designs, engineering and fitting them. “We had to take measurements for sizes, made drawings and suggested how the liner can be laid up and fitted. Material Upgrade Osborn has secured a R12 million export order to Angola, for robust machines that will enable the world’s fourth largest diamond mine to process the more competent material that it is now mining. Osborn will supply the Catoca diamond mine with a large vibrating grizzly feeder and a jaw crusher, says marketing director Martin Botha. The mine, which is located near Saurimo in the Lunda Sul province of Angola, is upgrading its primary tip in order to accommodate the harder material being mined. The vibrating grizzly feeder is an Osborn
gearbox driven, 3 step, 2m x 4.6m machine. A 50 x 60 jaw crusher has been ordered. Both machines have been customised for the client, with electrical control panels included at the mine’s request. The diamond mine accounts for about 6% of the world diamond production and about 70% of Angola’s diamond output. Its proven and probable diamond reserves are estimated at 130 million carats.
