COVER STORY
Risk Associated With Using Grade ‘F’ Belting Towards the beginning of the century, there were statements made that the South African specification for fire retardant belting were lacking. Unscrupulous importers of belting obtained ‘golden samples’ for testing by SABS, who then certified that the belts were indeed in accordance to specification ‘SABS 971’, the spec that catered for fire retardant belting. Many users fell into the trap of accepting the certificate that SABS has fairly tested the belt in accordance with the specification and that it passed. It should be noted that in the current climate, should a belt not have the SABS mark on it, it does not comply.
U
nfortunately, some of the manufacturers of the imported belting mentioned above do not have the ability to continuously manufacture belting of a quality that would pass the rigorous SABS test in a sustainable manner while maintaining a competitive price.
The perception that using fire retardant belting on the surface will make them DMR compliant prompted many users of hard rock mines and even diamond mines to start using grade ‘F’ belting Reviewing specifications
The first update to the SABS specifications started happening around 2002, when a group of highprofile users and all manufacturers affiliated to the Conveyor Manufacturer’s Association (CMA) formed a working group, in conjunction with SABS, to review the SANS series of specifications for conveyor belting. After many meetings and heated debate, in 2003 the revised version of SANS 971 was published.

For industry this was a step in the right direction, with both users and manufacturers gaining a much better understanding of the intricacies of manufacturing and testing fire retardant belting.
Still not up to international standards
Even though the 2003 version of the specification was a vast improvement in terms of being a test specification for fire retardant belting, it lacked the punch to put it in line with the best in the world. More discussion, lots more debate, and the workgroup agreed to incorporate the mid-scale gallery test. This was the enhancement of the ageing specification to put it in line with international standards. The users affected embraced this idea but the manufacturers recognised that there would be cost implications in a market that was already going south at the time. Nonetheless, the mid-scale gallery test was incorporated and at the time, and still today, South Africa has a first-class specification when it comes to fire retardant belting. Resulting from the publication of the new speci-
fication, importers of non-compliant belting were restricted in distributing their products. Unfortunately, there were some incidents where conveyor belting caught fire, resulting in the demise of some workers underground. The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) then changed the industry.
Recommendations made
The DMR, in a real effort to do good, recommended to users, all users, irrespective of whether it is a fiery mine or what material is being handled, that it would be in their interest to use fire retardant belting, and in some cases even on surface, as this will reduce the risk of fatalities caused by a conveyor belt fire. Keep in mind that it is typically not the flames of the fire that is the risk, but instead the toxins and smoke inhaled by the victims. The perception that using fire retardant belting on surface will make them DMR compliant prompted many users of hard rock mines and even diamond mines to start using grade ‘F’ belting on surface, and the demand for the product increased. Once again, the importers of products non-compliant to the SABS specification started supplying belting, competing with locally manufactured belting and some reputable importers. This in turn lead to a situation where local suppliers were shunned in favour of imported products, that failed the midscale gallery test. Furthermore, this ‘safety’ drive gave rise to a term ‘surface FR’, or ‘Old FR’ implying that a belt is manufactured to SANS 971:2003. It is said that the belt would be suitable for use on surface, but not underground. Although probably true, there is
significant risk because if such a belt would find its way underground, and a fire happens and there are injuries or worse, the DMR is likely to shut such a mine down, resulting in significant revenue losses, not to mention the trauma and legal implications of such an incident. It is thus in the interests of each user to ensure that when an order is placed for fire retardant belting that the order is placed using specification SANS 971:2013 (due for review), and nothing less. When ordering a belt from a supplier that may be doubtful, there would be little value in performing tests on samples, as those samples may be purpose-made for the test, with no assurance that such quality is sustainable, leaving the user at risk.
Even though the 2003 version of the specification was an improvement it lacked the punch to put it in line with the best in the world Local manufacturers can all manufacture belting that comply to the specification and test in accordance with it. Dunlop, being a leader in the industry spends significant time and money on research and compound development. They can perform the complete suite of SABS belting tests in their fully equipped laboratory and modern mid-scale gallery test facility. Dunlop’s door would always be open to assist users and manufacturers alike to ensure compliance to specifications. Power Generation Sorts Out Conveyor Issues A cement manufacturer in the Midwestern USA has implemented a power solution at a remote conveyor location that lacked convenient electrical access. The patent-pending design uses the kinetic energy of the moving belt to generate enough electricity to drive an automated dust suppression system, a pneumatic belt cleaner tensioner and a series of air cannons.
The Roll Gen System uses the movement of the belt to produce localised power

his system is helping operators at the Illinois Cement Plant (USA) reduce fugitive dust and spillage, increase cargo flow efficiency and minimise labour costs for cleaning and maintenance. The Martin Roll Gen system is designed to create a self-contained mini power station that allows operators to run electrical monitoring systems, safety devices and a variety of other components.
“Running auxiliary power can be both complicated and costly, requiring expensive labour and oversized cables to accommodate the inevitable voltage drop over long runs, as well as transformers, conduit, junction boxes and other components,” comments Andrew Timmerman, Product Development Engineer at Martin Engineering.
The long ride
Conveyor 107-1 is the longest outdoor conveyor system on the Illinois Cement site, running 182m and discharging either onto the 107-2 stack-out conveyor or the 75 metre long belt leading directly into the plant, based upon immediate production needs
A self-contained mini power station allows operators to run electrical monitoring systems, safety devices and a variety of other components Material arriving from the quarry can be either wet, dry and dusty or anything in between, depending on the season and weather. The changing work environment presented challenges throughout the entire conveying system, with different weather conditions triggering various types of carryback. Cleanup was labour-intensive. “The primary cleaner blades we had in place wore quickly, causing spillage that required us to take personnel from other areas to clean the buildup,” explains Illinois Cement Maintenance Planner, Brian Brandner. “We were out there cleaning or adjusting the tension to minimise spillage a few times a week.” Phase one of the solution involved placing a ‘smart’ dust suppression system at the transfer point between the 153 and 107-1 conveyors. Phase two included an automated, pneumatically-tensioned belt cleaner and air cannon system at 107-1’s discharge zone. Both components are powered by the Roll Gen System. To manage the dust, technicians installed a Martin Surfactant Dust System at the transfer point between 153 and 170-1 to deliver a chemically-enhanced water spray as a topical treatment for material at the point of emission.
Cleaning the belt
Close to the mid-point of the system, conveyor 107-1 begins a gradual 6m rise and discharges into the transfer chute leading either to the stackout conveyor feeding the storage area or the main conveyor entering the plant. At that transfer point, technicians installed a Martin QC1 Primary Cleaner XHD (extra heavy duty) tensioned with an Automated Blade System (ABS). Connected to a small 24V DC air compressor and a control panel powered by the Roll Gen, the ABS pneumatic tensioner delivers precise monitoring and tensioning to reduce the labour typically required to maintain optimum blade pressure through manual adjustment. CONVEYING Upon detection of an empty belt, the system is set to run for one full belt rotation to clean the surface thoroughly before pulling away.
Transfer chute flow
While monitoring the results of the installation, Martin Engineering technicians observed that the decreased spillage resulted in a proportional increase in fines discharged down the transfer chute. Exposed to the outside environment, the chute began to form significant buildup along the sides, at the diverter gate and on the internal shelf meant to slow the flow of material. The technicians had a solution to this unexpected result, and to mitigate the buildup, they installed a Martin Hurricane air cannon. “When there’s cargo flowing, the cannon fires about every ten minutes, which keeps fines from clinging to the walls and promotes proper flow,” Brian adds.
Results
The use of multiple technologies working in tandem to control material flow and prevent fugitive particles has dramatically improved the material handling system’s efficiency. The modifications have helped Illinois Cement reduce labour and equipment expenses, considerably cutting the manpower needed to clean spillage along the conveyor path. The result is a cleaner, safer and more productive operation. Martin Engineering Rick Felde, Tel: (541) 306-4815 Email: rickf@martin-eng.com, www.martin-eng.com

T
he fast track contract covered the design, engineering, installation and commissioning of 24 trough conveyors, three Redler en-masse chain conveyors, transfer towers and related systems.
Increased production
Conveyors were integrated into both current and new lines to handle the increased production made possible by the expansion, with the conveyor system comprising three stockpiles fed by shuttle conveyors. With the new system, woodchips are conveyed from the existing and new chipping lines to the relevant stockpiles and then, using reclaim and associated conveyors, conveyed to existing infeed digester conveyors.
Conveyors were integrated into both current and new lines to handle the increased production made possible by the expansion Various bypass systems have been planned and provided for, including that from the stacking route to the reclaim conveyors in the event that a reclaim machine is undergoing maintenance or unplanned downtime.
Controlling the dust
A set of Redler conveyors were installed for the
conveying of fines generated by the screening system, which greatly assists in dust control. “The Redler conveyors were selected for a number of the benefits they offer, including their ability to fit in with the current layout of the screening building, as well as space constraints within the plant,” says Richard Späth, General Manager for technologies, at Takraf Africa. “The Redler conveyor also boasts multiple discharges, facilitating the building of a “cone-shell type” stockpile, while also assisting in loading a truck evenly.” Another uncommon feature designed and installed by the company is the four conveyor walk-in type gallery, with some of the conveyor gantries being required to span between 45m and 50m due to space constraints and existing infrastructure. Since this was a brownfield project, the system was required to be installed in an operational plant where certain tie-ins had to be completed during limited shutdown windows. In addition, the fasttrack nature of the contract called for precise and tight planning of the in-house engineering, which was complicated by the challenges of interfacing with new and existing services on the plant. “In total, approximately 1 700 tons of steel was required to be designed, fabricated and installed within 12 months, which included mechanical installation, commissioning and handover, without compromising on safety and the quality of the equipment provided,” Richard concludes. Job prospects
“The project will employ 175 people directly, over and above which there will be sub-contractors on site when necessary,” says Allan Widlake, Boipelo Mining Contractors executive partner and new business director at Murray & Roberts Cementation. As part of the mining services offered, Boipelo Mining Contractors will also be negotiating the geological features of three mining sections, which is likely to require drilling and blasting of dykes in the orebody when necessary. New Clydesdale Colliery, whose roots go back its initial formation in 1942, when the first exploration borehole was drilled, produces thermal coal for local consumption and the export market. The mine has been operated by Universal Coal since 2016, and is one of four in South Africa owned by the company. The FLSmidth Raptor cone crusher line has long provided industries with effective crushing solutions that meet these demands. And now, with the introduction of the new Raptor R250, R350 and R450 models, these advantages are further
reinforced with advanced smart technologies and machine optimisation software. The new Raptor cone crusher generation does not need back liner material for the liners and is designed to operate at higher capacities. In addition, the pressure resistance has been increased. This will improve the particle shape during the size reduction, something that can reduce the number of crushing stages and require smaller screen sizes in the plant.

The Raptor R250, R350 and R450 incorporate comprehensive digital connectivity allowing them to be accessed from the cloud performance and asset health monitoring metrics, which can be accessed by authorised personnel at any time, and from anywhere in the world. Protecting vital equipment is always a prime concern in aggregates. The R250, R350 and R450 cone crushers use OEM software to ensure that the machine is operating at peak performance without risking damage. This software is capable of self diagnosis, and can be easily integrated with most plant systems. Additionally, the Raptor cone crushers employ 'fail safe' hydraulics to ensure protection from mechanical overload should an accumulator bladder fail. The OEM software also helps maintain desired output through power-based control or particle size analysis, which automatically adjusts the close-side settings for increased consistency of particle size. CHUTES
A Solution For A Sticky Challenge When a Gauteng-based beverage manufacturer encountered a sticky materials handling challenge, Weba Chute Systems and Brelko Conveyor Products joined forces to deliver a customised solution.
“
Challenges at certain transfer points in the beverage manufacturing plant meant the customer was not able to operate at optimal levels, says Mark Baller, managing director of Weba Chute Systems. The customer had been experiencing high spillage volumes as well as ongoing blockages in chutes. This, in turn, caused numerous plant stoppages that prevented it from achieving production targets. The challenges caused costly downtime, and many issues could only be appropriately addressed during the bi-annual maintenance shutdowns.
Following an on-site assessment, it was confirmed that the proposed Brelko equipment would control the spillage, however Weba Chute Systems’ transfer point expertise was needed to address the material flow issues in the plant.
With it's traditional focus on the mining and bulk materials handling sector, its chutes are usually much larger and more robust than those required in the food and beverage industry Bigger and more robust
With Weba Chute Systems’ traditional focus on the mining and bulk materials handling sector, its chutes are usually much larger and more robust than those required in food and beverage industry applications. While chutes on mines can weigh up to 50 tons, the custom-designed transfer systems for this beverage manufacturing plant weighed in at around 300kg. “The design principles remain the same,” Mark says. “With our understanding of material flow and our in-house design capability, we could develop the most appropriate chute design for this plant.” Providing a solution for a beverage manufacturing plant meant attention was given to materials of construction. These included the use of stainless steel and foodgrade polyurethane components. Another area which received careful consideration was that the new transfer points would be installed in an existing plant. This meant engineering for an existing footprint, accommodating existing walls and walkways, and catering for space constraints.
A boost in production
Mark says that the collaborative approach between Weba Chute Systems and Brelko Conveyor Products delivered a number of benefits on the project. “Our working knowledge of Brelko products allowed us to engineer our chute solution to achieve a fit-for-purpose solution for the customer,” Mark concludes.

FEEDERS
Moving Ore at a Rapid Rate Transmin Australia has recently secured a contract with BHP WA Iron Ore for the supply of five Transmin Low Profile Feeders (LPF) each 4.0m in width, to feed ore at 4 000tph, and including product scalping screens in the ore handling plant.
T
ransmin’s LPF technology is unique in its ability to use a 4.0m wide belt, meaning material can be presented to the scalping screens at a width closer to the deck width, therefore maximising screening efficiency. This order follows on from a previous supply of a similar LPF in a reclaim hopper configuration, to handle 2 500tph.

The unit supplied to Zambia had a 2.1m belt and was designed for a feed rate of 2 000tph with material P80 of 177mm Raising awareness
Transmin has, over the past two years been working with clients and suppliers to raise awareness of the technology in Africa and identifying opportunities where this equipment could benefit customers. “Substantial effort has been made to engage with various stakeholders in the market, ultimately culminating in the manufacturing and supply of a LPF comprising about 50% South African content
to a mine on the Zambian Copperbelt last year,” says Transmin official African distributor Carmaky COO, Miguel Dos Santos. “Localisation is a key concern both for South African and Africa based operations due to factors such as legislation and lead time. Opportunities also exist for improving the cost base for the units with local fabrication.” The unit supplied to Zambia had a 2.1m belt and was designed for a feed rate of 2 000tph with material P80 of 177mm. It was fitted with an automatic lubrication system and had a unique rail system to facilitate its removal for maintenance when required.
A step above the rest
With so many different feeders in the market, one of the first questions asked is why choose a LPF
over an apron feeder or belt feeder? In essence, a LPF is a hybrid between an apron feeder and a conventional belt feeder bringing many of the benefits of both types of feeders together.
LPF technology is unique in its ability to use a 4.0m wide belt, meaning material can be presented to the scalping screens at a width closer to the deck width Benefits
Some of the direct benefits include a lower profile than either an apron feeder or belt feeder, no tracking issues as experienced with belt feeders, making the LPF unit particularly good at two-way feeder applications. The Transmin LPF also reduces spillage compared to an apron feeder and it is able to use belt widths of up to 4m with a capacity up to 10 000tph depending on bulk density. In addition, the installation of the LPF has the ability to save on plant building/structure height through low belt line above floor/ground level and also the ability to change direction in the same machine. This change in direction can also lead to a saving in horizontal length. These savings present additional cost savings in the form of a lower or shorter steel structure which leads to lower ancillary requirements for electrical cables, water pipes and plant air. This includes reduced power requirements to pump water and blow air. The LPF also offers reduced structural weight through shortened steel, and possibly reduced steel section sizes which in turn leads to lower requirements for concrete footings, reduced wind loading through reducing the overall structure size. Finally a reduced structure height reduces power requirements due to less drive power requirement to lift material, either as bulk material on a conveyor or as slurry in a pipe. ENVIRONMENT
Pipe Conveyor Puts a Damper on Dust In Yangquan, northern China’s Shanxi province, Continental is using a closed-trough conveyor belt system to ensure the smooth and environmentally friendly extraction of pit coal. The closed system minimises dust emissions at operator YanKan Coal’s mining site, and is also fireproof and has low rolling resistance, making it energy-efficient. The system, which is one of the longest closed-trough conveyor belt systems in China, covers a distance of 8.1 kilometres.
B
e it smartphones, tablets, gasoline and electric drives, buildings, machinery and vehicles, they all have one thing in common, they all need energy and raw materials in order to be produced and operated. For this reason, oil, natural gas and precious metals are mined around the globe.
The closed-trough conveyor belt overcomes elevation differences of up to 172 metres over its 8.1-kilometre stretch from the coal deposit to the transfer station, going through a complex route with over 39 convex, concave and 20 horizontal bends In China, coal serves as a major source for national energy production, making it the most important resource for covering the country’s vast energy

requirements. The People’s Republic currently covers about 60 percent of total energy production by mining it. This makes it one of the largest producing countries in the world. Making coal mining environmentally friendly while at the same time investing in the expansion of renewable energies are important aspects of China’s energy policy. This is where the products from Continental help.
Clean material transport for better air and added safety
“For the operators of mining facilities, the fundamental question is which technical solution is the safest, most reliable and cost-effective method of transporting coal and other raw materials from the perspective of climate protection and energy
efficiency,” says Stephan Weisgerber from Continental in China. The operator of the coal mine, YanKan Coal, is therefore relying on Continental closed-trough conveyor belts, also known as pipe conveyors. Especially with the demand of the Chinese government for climate protection in coal mining, these are increasingly becoming the means of choice. In general, conveyor belts have emerged as the financially and environmentally more advantageous transport solution within a certain distance compared with alternatives such as truck fleets, since their operation emits less CO2 and there is no need for empty trips. Closed systems like tube conveyors also offer other decisive benefits like minimising dust emissions. In addition, the transported material itself is well protected against environmental influences such as wind, snow, sun and rain. “This is done by rolling up the belt,” explains Stephan. The outside edges of the belt overlap throughout the entire duration of transportation like a protective casing for the transported material. Only when taking up and delivering material do the closed-trough belts open up and assume the shape of a conventional conveyor belt.
Meeting climate protection requirements
“We decided to use Continental’s closed-trough
conveyor belts because they fully meet the relevant requirements with regard to climate protection, safety and efficiency,” adds BiGui Chen from YanKan Coal. “The closed system from Continental is ideal, because no dust can escape. The closed-trough conveyor belts in Yangquan are also flame-retardant, adding another layer of safety,” he adds.
YanKan Coal, in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi, is relying on a closed-trough conveyor belts, also known as pipe conveyors to control any dust emissions In mining, whether above or below ground as well as in industrial applications, large inclines and tight bends with low space requirements and high mass flows must often be overcome. While the angle of incline of troughed belt conveyors is usually 20° or less and curve radii remain very large, a pipe conveyor allows curve radii and tilt angles of up to 30°. The Yangquan closed-trough conveyor belt overcomes elevation differences of up to 172 metres over its 8.1 kilometre stretch from the coal deposit to the transfer station, going through a complex route with over 39 convex, concave and 20 horizontal bends. African solutions for African challenges Pilot Crushtec International, a supplier of quarrying and mining equipment, has added the DoppiaTrac DR400 track mounted, self-driven, feeding, crushing and stockpiling machine for medium to hard bituminous coal crushing applications.
The concept for the DoppiaTrac was born, from a client requirement to which there was no ready solution. “We were called out to a client, who gets paid per ton for processing coal, who needed a mobile crusher,” explains Jorge Abelho, Technical Director at Pilot Crushtec. “He had experimented with various solutions, but nothing quite solved the problem.” "It was with this in mind that we decided to start from scratch, conceptualise, design, and build our own fully mobile rollcrusher and the DoppiaTrac was born. It is a fully mobile machine that you can get onto site and be up and running
within 30 minutes.
"We understand that this unit is mobile and needs to be moved often, and easily. Therefore we found the best possible engine to run the rig, which is reliable, fuel efficient, and easily maintained. Finally, we simplified the operation as much as possible meaning that we don’t have a programmable logic controller (PLC), and buttons are kept to a minimum. This machine is specifically built to survive the rigors of the African environment where sites are remote, conditions are harsh, and work is hard." Software suite takes the weight off logistics Ensuring that the correct driver and vehicle is permitted to deliver and gain access to your premises is an important safety and security consideration. This is now possible with AccessX, which forms part of the next-generation WBX receiving and dispatch software. The suite of software products is aimed at optimising and automating the entire weighbridge-centric product movement process.
Dariel software solutions executive director, Greg Vercellotti
Comprising a complete end-to-end solution, the weighbridge software suite includes CaseX for planning, SPX for bulk inventory, stockpile and quality management, AccessX for identification and access, and WBX for fulfilment. Hence the entire process of receiving and dispatching products over a weighbridge can be easily managed, Dariel Software Solutions Executive Director, Greg Vercellotti, comments. Apart from the software suite itself, WBX
offers a range of professional services, from business analysis to architecture and design, development, integration, testing, and support and maintenance. This means that solutions can be tailored for specific requirements in industries as diverse as mining, manufacturing, logistics, waste management, agriculture, food and beverage, and road management. Current blue-chip clients include the likes of Anglo American, African Rainbow Minerals, Road Development Agency, Foodcorp, National Foods, Eskom, Mbuyelo Coal, FPT, and the Boulder Group. 4x4 forklifts for any application Shamrock Handling Concepts has extended its range of forklift trucks to include the Agrimac all-terrain 4x4 forklift. The trucks have been designed for efficient operation, enhanced safety and low maintenance in diverse sectors. Typical applications are in agriculture and forestry, mining, industrial sites, building and construction, as well as outdoor warehousing and military applications. “The main advantage of these tough off-road forklift trucks is one machine has the capability to move stock in all environments, without the need for the use of other vehicles. For example, one Agrimac forklift truck is able to move stock from a yard or field, safely to a warehouse,” says Marius Schutte, divisional managing director, Shamrock Handling Concepts. “Our Agrimac range, which encompasses TH-160, TH-210, TH-250 TH-300, TH-300 and TH-350 machines, is able to drive on rough, unpaved surfaces, where conventional vehicles are unable to travel." These 4x4 forklifts are fitted with large heavy-duty pneumatic tyres, which add stability and traction when operating in wet conditions and on uneven terrain.

Saving screens with high-quality motors
Harsh operating conditions on vibrating screens demand high quality engineering and the strictest tolerances for unbalanced motors and gearboxes, or they simply do not last. Kenny Mayhew-Ridgers, chief operating officer at Kwatani says, “We design our own motors with local conditions in mind, giving the customer a high performance and long lasting product.” This includes optimal sealing arrangements for keeping electrical components dry and clean. The design must consider various orientations of the motor, depending on the angle of installation. Dusty conditions on mines also present a challenge. “Dust ingress can compromise the sealing configuration of the lid,” he says. “Our design is therefore like a top-hat, so the O-ring is not on a flat surface but rather on a cylindrical, vertical surface.” He also highlights the massive centripetal forces that are exerted on the screening machine by the unbalanced motor and gearbox. This makes it vital to secure them well to the screen. “To achieve this, we specify our own fabricated bolts, nuts and washers,” he says. “If sub-standard fasteners are used, components can come loose and cause extensive damage,” concludes Kenny.
