It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this year’s production of Anything Goes on board the SS American cruise ship. The show is pure nonsense and good fun with many memorable songs from Cole Porter which I’m sure you will enjoy.

Anne Tonks - C hairman

Each year it gets more and more difficult to make ends meet as costs rise and audiences seem to dwindle. The show last year cost over £25000, with the theatre alone costing almost a third of that figure. However, thanks to prudent management and loyal support from our audiences, we actually made a profit. This meant that, along with the profit from our Junior Production and fundraising, we were able to make donations to St Paul’s Church, the Air Ambulance, Candelighters, Bradford Cancer Support and Autistic Society totalling £2500. We really depend on our audiences and value your support this year to enable us to continue performing here at St George’s Hall.

Our thanks go to our Production team of Janet, Steve and Ian who put a lot of time and effort into our shows and attend so many rehearsals no matter what the weather! We also thank our stage crew, lighting, sound, props and costume teams who give us a lot of valuable time and energy but hopefully, you never see! We look forward to seeing you at our Junior production in April at Cleckheaton Town Hall when we present Half a Sixpence, the Tommy Steele classic, and we hope to see you, your family and friends next January as we give Oliver, the Dickensian musical. I’m sure this one will leave you wanting MORE…

Enjoy this performance, let’s hope it’s all plain sailing

Bon Voyage!!

Andy Redfern - Billy Crocker

Andy Redfern (Billy Crocker) After taking a break from the stage for the past couple of years, Andy made his return last year playing the lead role of Don in our production of ‘Summer Holiday’. Andy is a regular snowboarder and all-round adrenaline junkie, and he says that that buzz of performing on stage is what draws him to take part in amateur dramatic productions. Andy has enjoyed the challenge of playing Billy, and perfecting the number of different accents Billy uses throughout the show has really tested his dramatic ability. In between balancing rehearsals with his day job as the director of a growing Elland-based business, Andy is a member of a boxing club and enjoys socialising with friends. He is also a keen food-lover and considers himself to be a dab hand in the kitchen, where he can often be found trying out new recipes.

Kathryn Tonks (Reno Sweeney) Kathryn is pleased to be back on board with the Society after last year’s bus adventure in Summer Holiday. Between the London Bus and SS American Kathryn took a step back in time earlier this year to play Catherine in “The Winslow Boy” at Keighley Playhouse. However refreshing the change to straight plays, Kathryn is always most at home in a musical. She has enjoyed finding her sea legs in learning the high energy routines this year and hopes you love watching them as much as she does performing them.

Amy Jagger (Erma)

Amy Jagger - Erma

By day, Amy works in Marketing for an international manufacturing company. By night, she is Erma – gangster’s moll and side-kick to Public Enemy Number Thirteen! For months her alias has gone undiscovered but this week Amy fears all will be revealed as the cast board this ocean liner where, frankly, Anything Goes! Amy caught the acting bug from her parents and has enjoyed playing various parts over the years since she took on her first role as young Jane Eyre with Halifax Thespians when she was 12. She played Barbara in BSP’s production of Summer Holiday last year and has recently danced (for her life!) as Graziella in Halifax Light Opera Society’s updated version of West Side Story. Amy is really looking forward to performing a fun character role in this popular musical comedy.

Harcourt

Hannah Smithies (Hope Harcourt)

Anne Tonks (Evangeline Harcourt)

‘Anything Goes’ will be Hannah’s fourth production with BSPAODS and she is really looking forward to playing the part of Hope; who is very different from characters she has played in the past. As well as performing with Buttershaw, Hannah is currently training to be a Midwife at Bradford University which she ‘absolutely loves’. However, her studies come first and after this production she is taking a back seat from ‘Am dram’ for a couple of years until she is qualified. She hopes to return to Buttershaw St. Paul’s in the future.

Anne joined Buttershaw in 1973 for Buttershaw’s World Amateur Premiere of Charlie Girl when they presented their shows in the schoolrooms at St Paul’s Church. She has since gone on to play many leading roles, co-ordinated the concert party, directed the Junior Productions, played piano for rehearsals, worked back stage and is now our Chairman. She is delighted to still be treading the boards especially with Kathryn, her daughter in the leading role of Reno this year.

Alan Hirst (Elisha Whitney)

"Rick's been away from BSP for two years, alternating between being very silly and very serious as Franz in The Producers, Mark Cohen in Rent, Le Fou in Beauty & the Beast and Peter in JC Superstar over in Halifax. He's delighted to be back home and being silly again with BSP. Tweet tweet."

After performing as a youngster with BSP Juniors for many years, Johnny’s first senior production was Kiss Me Kate. Following University and a spell working abroad, Johnny returned for the millennium production of Merry Widow and has now played many principal parts with the Society as well as taking a variety of leading roles with shows in Halifax and Huddersfield.

Alan’s first show with BSP was also the 1973 production of ‘Charlie Girl’ and he has appeared in every show except one since then. Besides playing many principal roles for the Society, Alan has been responsible for the publicity and for producing the show Programmes since the Society moved to the Library Theatre in 1978.

illy Crocker, a young love-sick Wall Street broker, stows away on the transatlantic liner S.S. American, in hope of winning the heart of his beloved Hope Harcourt. His boss, Yale graduate Elisha J. Whitney who is planning to attend an important ' business venture' in England is also on board. Hope is on her way to England to be married to her fiancÊ Lord Evelyn Oakleigh a stuffy, hapless British nobleman. Also on the boat are "Moonface" Martin, a second-rate gangster labelled "Public Enemy Number 13," disguised as a minister, and his friend Erma. They have also, mistakenly, left behind their leader, "Snake Eyes" Johnson, Public Enemy 1. On board, Crocker runs into his friend, Reno Sweeney, an evangelizing nightclub singer, who resolves to help Billy win over Hope, to the dismay of Hope's mother, the recently widowed Evangeline Harcourt, who insists she marry Evelyn. Billy simultaneously learns the true identities of Moonface and Erma, and in exchange for his silence, they join the plot to break up Hope and Evelyn. However, as Billy doesn't have a ticket or passport, Moonface lets him have Snake Eyes Johnson's, without telling him to whom they belong. But the ship’s crew figure out that Public Enemy Number 1 is on board, and Billy has to take on a number of hilarious disguises to hide from them, which at first makes Hope angry with him. As the show progresses, Hope, Evelyn, Billy, Reno, Elisha, Evangeline, Erma, and Moonface all end up in a variety of compromising positions with members of the opposite sex, with Reno seducing Evelyn Oakleigh, originally just to get seen by Hope or Mrs. Harcourt so they would reject him, but eventually she wins him over for real and they even get married. In a frantic finale, Hope and Billy also get married, Mrs. Harcourt and Mr Whitney get married, and Moonface Martin receives a notice on board that the government considers him "harmless." How’s that for a happy ending!

the co-educational school for girls & boys age 3 to 16 I study we flourish

Scholarships & Bursaries available

Security and a sense of belonging are key in promoting the happiness and success of children and young people. Huddersfield Grammar School offers these through an excellent pupil;teacher ratio and small teaching groups. We provide a high quality education for children and young people aged from three to sixteen, encouraging everyone to achieve their maximum potential, preparing them academically, socially and morally for the future. Success can be gauged from examination results, and we are very proud of the young people who achieved 97% A*-C at GCSE this year, but school life is more than this. We are about individuals; every one of whom is a success as a person not just a statistic in a league table! Many are academically very able, but we delight equally in the achievements of those who have struggled to reach their potential benefitting from the support which dedicated teachers such as ours are prepared to give. Our next Open Morning is on Saturday, 20th November. We look forward to seeing you then!
