OUR DIRECTOR The biggest film musical blockbuster of the 1930's was The Wizard of OZ, the most expensive production in MGM history at that time, costing $3,200,000. It has never been off release since, and for many people it is an all time favourite. However few people know that The Wizard of Oz was the premiere attraction at the Majestic Theatre (on the west side of Columbus Circle) in 1901. In the spectacular production, which L. Frank Baum adapted from his own fairy tale, the cyclone blew Dorothy and her pet cow all the way from Kansas to the country of the Munchkins. After meeting the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion, Dorothy takes her three new friends on a number of adventures until they finally meet the Wizard in the Emerald City. One of the most charming aspects of the 1939 film was, of course, the songs you will hear tonight as well as the marvellous yellow brick road, the witch's green face and particularly the musical sequences - Garland singing Over the Rainbow, Bolger dancing at his eccentric best as the Scarecrow and Lahr's whimpering as the cowardly Lion.

David Kirk

It was all the stuff of magic, and it worked critical and commercial magic for MGM. The Wizard of Oz, however, had the misfortune to come out in the same year as Gone With The Wind and so did not pick up the Academy Award for best picture of 1939, an honour that most likely would have come to it in any other year. The Wizard of Oz begins in black and white in a bitterly real America of stern faces and endless plains. Dorothy, the innocent dreamer, is then swirled to a technicolour dreamland "somewhere over the rainbow ....". Here of course, she eludes evil, overcomes enemies and finds loving friends. The Wizard of Oz is one of those films on which people are brought up and which they never forget. Children and parents who see it year after year on television never seem to tire of it. The film still stands today as one of the legendary pictures of all time. When Terry Hands, Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company wanted a new musical for the Barbican Theatre there was no hesitation. It had to be The Wizard of Oz, adapted from the motion picture screenplay and staged in 1987. This new adaptation was hailed a huge success -I am sure after tonight you will agree.

NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Welcome once again to our annual show in this wonderful theatre. We have had a busy time since we last met! Last September the company went to Ireland to take part in the Waterford Festival and give our production of My Fair Lady. Against all odds we set off with cast, scenery, costumes and props. The competition was tough but I am very pleased to say that we received 7 nominations and 2 awards. My husband, Brian, and I were very pleased to be part of the great event and we thank our friends from NODA who accompanied us on the trip. As President of this very talented company I congratulate all who took part and give a special thank you to our sub committee for their hard work in getting the show on the road. So now to this year's show. We have something different as we go 'over the rainbow' and trip down the 'yellow brick road' with our super cast and chorus - not forgetting our loveable Munchkins. Watch out for moving trees, crows, monkeys and witches (good and bad) a straw man, a tin man and that lion.

Best wishes, Clare Ashley. T HOR A E

We wish to thank all those who have assisted in any way with the production of "The Wizard of Oz". Unfortunately there are too many to mention by name. However, we must thank our Patrons, Subscribers and the visiting public to the Alhambra theatre. As a result of their support and the efforts of our members at these events over the years, the Company has been able to make many cash donations to local charities. Regrettably the increasing cost of our productions prevents us from supporting as many causes as we would wish. A special word of thanks must be given to:The Management and staff of the Alhambra Theatre and Bradford Ticket Centre. Jim Greenhalf and the Bradford Telegraph and Argus for advanced publicity. Dewsbury Arts Group, for the loan of properties. St Winefride's Church for providing rehearsal facilities. Allerton Congregational Church for the loan of a rehearsal piano. Students from Bradford College who assisted with the make up Finally we must mention the Advertisers in our programme: please give them your patronage.

IN MEMORIAM C. E. Peter Walker Known as the 'Lawrence Olivier' of the amateur theatre in this area, Peter brought pleasure to thousands over the years through his talents as an actor and raconteur. For many years he was chairman of Heaton Amateurs and also had a life long connection with Bingley Little Theatre. Peter became a member of Great Horton Theatre Company for our 1995 production of Gigi which he said gave him a new lease of life. He was always supportive and enthusiastic. Peter will be sadly missed by all.

Wilf Hanson Was a chorus member and stalwart of the society for many years. Wilf together with his wife Muriel were great supporters of GHTC. We remember Wilf with great affection.

THE WATERFORD EXPERIENCE It was hectic, it was hard work, but it was rewarding and fun. When the Company agreed to enter its production of "My Fair Lady", a show which many of you enjoyed here last February, in the Waterford festival of Light Opera no one really understood the amount of effort that this involved. After transporting the set, costumes and properties, plus the production team, back stage staff and the entire cast to Ireland, within twenty four hours the pantechnichon was unloaded, the orchestra rehearsed, the set constructed, the lights rigged, a dress rehearsal held, a performance given and the theatre cleared! It sounds unbelievable - but we, and fourteen other societies did this on fifteen consecutive days last autumn. Was it worth it? Most certainly. It was a wonderful experience to perform to a packed Theatre Royal, Waterford, to such a warm and appreciative audience. Their reaction and the friendly welcome we received from the Festival Committee, were sufficient reward, but to win two trophies put the icing on the cake. We congratulate Tony Cross , who was awarded a beautiful rose bowl as the best comedian, and the Company received a shield and a ship's decanter for the best concerted item, "Get me to the Church on time". Both of these awards were well deserved. The company, backed by a superb orchestra, gave a brilliant performance - of course not only were they performing for Great Horton and Bradford, but also for Yorkshire and England! None of this could have happened without the willing support of all our members, the entire cast, the production team and technical staff, and all of whom not only helped to fund the trip but also gave their time to rehearse through the Summer. We thank them all and our sponsors, Consort Homes, C L Dyson Esq, Mrs P Halliday, Mr and Mrs N A Stubbs, Whitaker & Sons and Direct Line for their support. It was an incredible experience. TW
