10. The Warrior of Light Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of it's dream.

But there is suffering in life, and there are defeats. No one can avoid... them. But it's better to lose some of the battles in the struggles for your dreams than to be defeated without ever knowing what you're fighting for. Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience. Art by Laura Diehl. http://ldiehl.deviantart.com/

"Two lovers went exploring inside a cave. Their village was very poor and the villagers were starving for food and water. The two lovers had heard of the lost treasures of the gods but no one had been able to find it, if these two lovers co... uld find such a treasure their village problems would be solved. The odds that they could find such a treasure was against them, since so many had tried and come out with nothing or lost their lives. As they explored the cave on the third day, they had just about given up when an earthquake occurred shaking the insides of the cave. That shakeup caused a wall of the cave to tumble! Curious they explored this now open part of the cave and discovered the treasure of the gods! Treasure was everywhere, even on the walls! At that moment another earthquake occurred causing a cave in and injuring the boyfriend. The girlfriend was uninjured, but her boyfriend became unconscious. The girlfriend soon realized that they would die if she couldn't find a way out, for hours she tried to move the rocks but they proved to heavy, she even explored further into the cave to find a way out but couldn't find one. She came back to her boyfriend and prepared to die with him, until she heard a voice coming from a lamp. She asked the lamp what it wanted from her, the lamp replied that it needed a host genie! In return it would let her use her new genie power only once to transport her boyfriend and treasure back to the village, but in return she would become the genie of the lamp, enslaved to the god that created the lamp in the first place for thousand years, and once that thousand years was up she would be released from the lamp. With tears in her eyes she accepts this offer only to rescue her boyfriend and the village, and knowing she will never see him again." Art by http://minties.deviantart.com/

96. Fact or Fiction? - You decide! GNOME in North-European mythology, a dwarfish imp inhabiting the interior parts of the earth and having special custody of mineral treasures. Bjorsen, who died in 1765, says gnomes were common enough in the so... uthern parts of Sweden in his boyhood, and he frequently saw them scampering on the hills in the evening twilight. Ludwig Binkerhoof saw three as recently as 1792, in the Black Forest, and Sneddeker avers that in 1803 they drove a party of miners out of a Silesian mine. Basing our computations upon data supplied by these statements, we find that the gnomes were probably extinct as early as 1764.” See More

100. The Banshee THE Banshee means, especially, the woman of the fairy race, from van, "the Woman--the Beautiful;" the same word from which comes Venus. Shiloh-Van was one of the names of Buddha--"the son of the woman;" and some writers aver th at in the Irish--Sullivan (Sulli-van), may be found this ancient name of Buddha. As the Leanan-Sidhe was the acknowledged spirit of life, giving inspiration to the poet and the musician, so the Ban-Sidhe was the spirit of death, the most weird and awful of all the fairy powers. But only certain families of historic lineage, or persons gifted with music and song, are attended by this spirit; for music and poetry are fairy gifts, and the possessors of them show kinship to the spirit race--therefore they are watched over by the spirit of life, which is prophecy and inspiration; and by the spirit of doom, which is the revealer of the secrets of death. Sometimes the Banshee assumes the form of some sweet singing virgin of the family who died young, and has been given the mission by the invisible powers to become the harbinger of coming doom to her mortal kindred. Or she may be seen at night as a shrouded woman, crouched beneath the trees, lamenting with veiled face; or flying past in the moonlight, crying bitterly: and the cry of thus spirit is mournful beyond all other sounds on earth, and betokens certain death to some member of the family whenever it. is heard in the silence of the night. *

The Banshee even follows the old race across the ocean and to distant. lands; for space and the offer no hindrance to the mystic power which is selected and appointed to bear the prophecy of death to a family. Of this a well authenticated instance happened a few years ago, and many now living can attest the truth of the narrative. A branch of the ancient race of the O'Gradys had settled in Canada, far removed, apparently, from all the associations, traditions, and mysterious influences of the old land of their fore-fathers. But one night a strange and mournful lamentation was heard outside the house. No word was uttered, only a bitter cry, as of one in deepest agony and sorrow, floated through the air. Inquiry was made, but no one had been seen near the house at the time, though several persons distinctly heard the weird, unearthly cry, and a terror fell upon the household, as if some supernatural influence had overshadowed them. Next day it so happened that the gentleman and his eldest son went out boating. As they did not return, however, at the usual time for dinner, some alarm was excited, and messengers were sent down to the shore to look for them. But no tidings came until, precisely at the exact hour of the night when the spirit-cry had been heard the previous evening, a crowd of men were seen approaching the house, bearing with them the dead bodies of the father and the son, who had both been drowned by the accidental upsetting of the boat, within sight of land, but not near enough for any help to reach them in time. Thus the Ban-Sidhe had fulfilled her mission of doom, after which she disappeared, 'and the cry of the spirit of death was heard no more. * At times the spirit-voice is heard in low and soft lamenting, as if close to the window. Not long ago an ancient lady of noble lineage was lying near the death-hour in her stately castle. One evening, after twilight., she suddenly unclosed her eyes and pointed to the window, with a happy smile on her face. All present looked in the direction, but nothing was visible. They heard, however, the sweetest music, low, soft, and spiritual, floating round the house, and at times apparently close to the window of the sick room. Many of the attendants thought it was a trick, and went out to search the grounds; but nothing human was seen. Still the wild plaintive singing went on, wandering through the trees like the night wind--a low, beautiful music that never ceased all through the night. Next morning the noble lady lay dead; then the music ceased, and the lamentation from that hour was heard no more. * There was a gentleman also in the same country who had a beautiful daughter, strong and healthy, and a splendid horsewoman. She always followed the hounds, and her appearance at the hunt attracted unbounded admiration, as no one rode so well or looked so beautiful. One evening there was a ball after the hunt, and the young girl moved through the dance with the grace of a fairy queen.

But that same night a voice came close to the father's window, as if the face were laid close to the glass, and he heard a mournful lamentation and a cry; and the words rang out on the air--"In three weeks death; in three weeks the grave--dead--dead--dead!" Three times the voice came, and three times he heard the words; but though it. was bright moonlight, and he looked from the window over all the park, no form was to be seen. Next day, his daughter showed symptoms of fever, and exactly in three weeks, as the Ban-Sidhe had prophesied, the beautiful girl lay dead. The night before her death soft music was heard outside the house, though no word was spoken by the spirit-voice, and the family said the form of a woman crouched beneath a tree, with a mantle covering her head, was~ distinctly visible. But on approaching, the phantom disappeared, though the soft, low music of the lamentation continued till dawn. Then the angel of death entered the house with soundless feet, and he breathed upon the beautiful face of the young girl, and she rested in the sleep of the dead, beneath the dark shadows of his wings. Thus the prophecy of the Banshee came true, according to the time foretold by the spiritvoice. See More

A phone call for example is always urgent - it rings only a few times and is gone, but is often not important. If you are in the middle of something truly important playing with kids, being present with your loved one, - do not stop just because a silly phone rings. Stay present with what's important now. ♥

125. Arthur Herbert Buckland (1870-1927), "The Fairy and the Beetle", 1922. Painter of romantic landscape subjects, genre and portraits; illustrator. Born at Taunton; studied art at the Academie Julian in Paris. Exhibition 1895-1927 at the R. A. and also at the R.I., R.B.A., R.O.I. and Paris Salon. "Valley of Flowers", R. A. 1897, was one of his best known works. He had an exhibition in 1895 at the Royal Academy in London and a year later at the Paris Salon des Artistes Francis in Paris. "Mr. Arthur Buckland's "Valley of Flowers" is of the order of romantic landscape; a forest glade, in which rhododendrons, along with many colored wild flowers are conspicuous, being the background for his subject. 'She placed a crown of gold upon my head which brought forgetfulness of all things'- a richly robed knight kneels at the feet of a stately woodland nymph, and if a few discordant notes of color are struck, there is no lack of spirit and grace in the canvas". However, she greets every traveler with a smile and every animal with a hug. Although her skin is pale and frozen she has a bright heart and gives them gifts of warmth and love. "Although it is my duty to change this old season" she said, "No one shall go without the small pleasures of comfort". She passes two young, small deer and pets them softly, their heart's already growing stronger. They gave each other deer kisses and knew that everything would be alright. For

138. While many viewed dragons as a symbol of the Devil, the Western dragon, four-legged and winged, is a very common symbol on crests. This can be explained by history, for Uther Pendragon, the father of legendary King Arthur, had the symbol of... the dragon on his crest. Keen sight, power, and fearsomeness are usually connected to dragons. Treasure is also thought of when Western dragons are imagined. Thus, dragons obviously symbolized powerful, wealthy people who guarded their wealth keenly. Dragons were quite common in heraldry, only second to the wyvern. Some of these have been given to those who have slain a dragon. For instance, Sir Moris Berkeley's coat of arms was changed after he slew the Bistern Dragon. Art by Jan Patrik Krasny. See More

Sliding down the perfect hills - a children's paradise; No thought of clearing their white souffle, no thought of chopping ice. My fingers, ears and toes felt frozen as I shovelled the mountain of snow But my heart was warm and light as the laughter continued to grow. Winter is for children; I'm sure of that today. Endlessly, we die and are reborn, changed yet unchanging throughout the ages. We move f rom lifetime to lifetime, taking up bodies as garments. We are watchers and we are wanderers. We seek knowledge and understanding above all. Long ago we strove the sunder the life of our body from our roving minds, for it grounded us. It held us back. It bound us to a single span of days. Through a ritual of death and rebirth, we severed our living ties and gained immortality. Now we are freed of the life of the body, but we are irrevocably tied to the life we cut away. It sustains us and empowers us. We thirst for life and we feed upon it. It is our greatest weakness and our greatest prize.

225. Santa's Workshop or Santa's Grotto, is the workshop where Santa Claus makes the toys and presents given out at Christmas. In Santa Claus mythology, the workshop is a sprawling complex located at the North Pole. In addition to housing the fa... ctory where toys are either manufactured or distributed by the elves, the complex also houses the residence of Santa Claus, his wife, and all of the reindeer. In the 20th century it became common during December in large shops or department stores to have a "cavern" in which an actor dressed up as Santa Claus would give gifts to children. Grottos can be large-walk through fantasy cavern-like areas incorporating animatronic characters such as elfs and pantomime characters. This tradition started in Britain in 1879 and then extended in the 1890s to Australian and American department stores seeking to attract customers. The world's first Christmas grotto was in Lewis's Bon Marche Department Store in Liverpool. The grotto was opened in 1879, entitled "Christmas Fairyland". Many generations of people across Britain first visited Father Christmas here and it is a tradition which is carried on by Lewis's to this day. In 1879, Thomas Nast revealed to the world in a series of drawings that Santa's Workshop is at the North Pole (specifically the North Magnetic Pole, due to the aurora borealis being centered around it and the fact that the workshop was on land, properties that at the time described the magnetic pole [which was under the Canadian Arctic Archipelago at the time; the magnetic pole has since drifted off to sea] but not the geographic one). Each of the countries of Scandinavia also claims Santa's workshop to be located on their territories. Norway claims he lives in Drøbak. In Denmark, he is said to live in Greenland

(near Uummannaq). In Sweden, the town of Mora has a theme park named "Tomteland". The national postal terminal in Tomteboda in Stockholm receives children's letters for Santa. 231. It all began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven, to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to th... e race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern over each race. But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into this ring he poured all his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all. One by one, the free peoples of Middle Earth fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who resisted. A last alliance of men and elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword. And Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur, to his death. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, the ring ensnared a new bearer. The ring came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep into the tunnels under the Misty Mountains, and there it consumed him. The ring gave to Gollum unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned his mind; and in the gloom of Gollum's cave, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a

nameless fear, and the Ring of Power perceived. Its time had now come. It abandoned Gollum. But then something happened that the Ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable. A hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, of the Shire. For the time will soon come when hobbits will shape the fortunes of all... Art by Raoul Vitale. 251. Dragonsblood (Pern) In Dragon’s Kin, bestselling author Anne McCaffrey did the unthinkable: for the first time ever, she invited another writer to join her in the skies of her most famous fictional creation. That writer was her son, Todd Mc... Caffrey. Together, they penned a triumphant new chapter in the annals of the extraordinarily popular Dragonriders of Pern. Now, for the first time, Todd McCaffrey flies alone. And Dragonsblood is proof that the future of Pern is in good hands. After all, dragons are in his blood. . . . Never in the dramatic history of Pern has there been a more dire emergency than that which faces the young dragonrider Lorana. A mysterious fatal illness is striking dragons. The epidemic is spreading like wildfire . . . and the next deadly cycle of Threadfall is only days away. Somehow, Lorana must find a cure before the dragons–including her own beloved Arith–succumb to the sickness, leaving Pern undefended. The lyrics of an all-but-forgotten song seem to point toward an answer from nearly five hundred years in the past, when Kitti Ping and her daughter Wind Blossom bred the first dragons from their smaller cousins, the fire-lizards. No doubt the first colonists possessed the advanced technology to find the cure for which Lorana seeks, but over the centuries, that knowledge has been lost. Or has it? For in the distant past, an aged Wind Blossom worries that the germs that affect the firelizards may one day turn on larger prey–and unleash a plague that will destroy the

dragons, Pern’s only defenders against Thread. But as her people struggle to survive, Wind Blossom has neither the time nor the resources to expend on a future that may never arrive–until suddenly she uncovers evidence that her worst fears will come true. Now two brave women, separated by hundreds of years but joined by bonds transcending time, will become unknowing allies in a desperate race against sickness and Threadfall, with nothing less than the survival of all life on Pern at stake. To open your heart to the fairies, you must nurture these feelings of wonder, reverence and love for every detail of your garden, for the airs which blow about it, the musical rain which falls gently upon it, the moon and the stars which silently look down on it, the great sun which is the source of its being and for the clouds and changing skies which provide it with a canopy. When you truly feel the sweetness of this magic, you will begin to discover the fairies, for they will make themselves know to you.

60. They hold their great balls in the open air, in what is called a fairy-ring. For weeks afterward you can see the ring on the grass. However, they have nothing in common. Fauns and s... atyrs were originally quite different creatures. Now, both have horns and both resemble goats below the waist, humans above; but originally satyrs had human feet, fauns goatlike hooves. The Romans also had a god named Faunus and goddess Bona Dea(female faun), who, like the fauns, were goat-people. The faun loves to dance and play the flute. Their habitats are forests and caves. 197. J.W. Waterhouse A Mermaid

Date: 1900 Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 98 x 67 cm Location: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK This painting was Waterhouse's diploma work for the Royal Academy. A mermaid (masculine Merman) was a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a human being and the tail of a fish. Similar divine or semidivine beings appear in ancient mythologies (e.g., the Chaldean sea god Ea, or Oannes). In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) and mermen were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and prophetic powers. They loved music and often sang. Though very long-lived, they were mortal and had no souls. Many folktales record marriages between mermaids (who might assume human form) and men. In most, the man steals the mermaid's cap or belt, her comb or mirror. While the objects are hidden she lives with him; if she finds them she returns at once to the sea. In some variants the marriage lasts while certain agreed-upon conditions are fulfilled, and it ends when the conditions are broken. Though sometimes kindly, mermaids and mermen were usually dangerous to man. Their gifts brought misfortune, and, if offended, the beings caused floods or other disasters. To see one on a voyage was an omen of shipwreck. They sometimes lured mortals to death by drowning, as did the Lorelei of the Rhine, or enticed young people to live with them underwater, as did the mermaid whose image is carved on a bench in the church of Zennor, Cornwall, Eng. 201. Troll Trolls are monsters that come from Scandinavian myths and Nordic fantasy. Trolls are called Trows in myths from the Shetlands. Trolls are not especially intelligent and are

often associated with an element. The most common description... of Trolls is a tough ugly creature with tough rock like skin. Trolls have the powers to regenerate even if hacked apart. The only way to stop a Troll regenerating is burning the monster. Trolls diet is unusual, as they will eat anything including metal, bone, wood and rocks. The stomachs of trolls contain very powerful digestive acids. This has led Trolls to an unpleasant form of attack of vomiting over their target; this is an extremely painful attack. Sometimes Trolls use basic hand weapons such as clubs or large stones. Art by Mattias Fahlberg. See More

202. During middle ages, especially from 15th to 17th century, Europe was under the dark shadow of ignorance and superstitions. Towns were underdeveloped and people lived near woods. The fear of wolves was like a nightmare. Their attacks were so... frequent and atrocious in nature that people even feared to travel from one place to another. Every morning, countryside people would find half-eaten human limbs scattered on their fields. The first recorded Werewolf sighting took place around the countryside of German town Colongne and Bedburg in 1591. An age-old pamphlet describes those shivering moments vividly. Few people cornered a large wolf and set their dogs upon it. They started to pierce it with sharp sticks and spears. Surprisingly the ferocious wolf did not run away or tried to protect itself, rather it stood up and turned out to be a middle-aged man he was Peter

Stubbe from the same village. Stubbe was put on a torture wheel where he confessed sixteen murders including two pregnant women and thirteen children. The history behind his downfall was rather bizarre. He had started to practice sorcery when he was only 12 and was so obsessed with it that even tried to make a pact with the Devil. Wearing a magic girdle he started to attack his enemies, real or imaginary. After several months, he would take the guise of a wolf and continued with his evil acts with more brutality. In the wolf form he used to tear up victims’ throats and suck warm blood from veins. Gradually his thirst for blood grew and he roamed around fields in search of prey. The savagery of his crimes was beyond imagination. The trial record motioned few of them. Once two men and a woman were walking along a road that went through the forest Stubbe used to hide in. He called one of them into the forest. When the man did not return for a long time the second one followed his trail and also disappeared into the forest. When both the man didn't return for a long time the woman ran for her life. Later, two mangled male corpses were recovered from the forest, but the woman’s body never reappeared. It was believed that Stubbe had devoured it all. Young girls playing together or milking the cows in the fields were his frequent victims. He used to chase them like a hound, catch the slowest one, rape and kill her. Then he would drink hot blood and eat tender flesh from her body. However; the most gruesome sin he committed was upon his own son. He took him to a nearby forest, cracked the poor child’s skull open and ate brain from it. No punishment could match the magnitude of Stubbe’s crime. His flesh was pulled off with red-hot pincer, his arms and legs were broken and he was finally decapitated. His carcass was burned to ashes. The Magistrate of Bedburg built a grim monument remembering the ghastly incident. Workmen put the torture wheel atop a tall pole with Stubbe’s head above it structured with the likeliness of a wolf. Sixteen pieces of yard long wood cuts were hung from the rim of the wheel commemorating poor souls of the victims. The words of Stubbe’s trial and execution spread across the lands in no time. His brutality, atrocity and savagery were beyond human comprehension and was readily related with the behavior of a wolf. People started to believe that such individuals with the shadow of wolves were living among them. They named them Werewolves. Art by http://dschunai.deviantart.com/

211. It's late and we are sleepy, The air is cold and still. Our jack-o-lantern grins at us Upon the window sill. We're stuffed with cake and candy And we've had a lot of fun, ... But now it's time to go to bed And dream of all we've done. We'll dream of ghosts and goblins And of witches that we've seen, And we'll dream of trick-or-treating On this happy Halloween. The skeletons are out tonight, they march about the street, With bony bodies, bony heads and bony hands and feet. Bony bony bony bones with nothing in between, Up and down and all around they march on Halloween.

216. Tonight is the night When dead leaves fly Like witches on switches Across the sky, When elf and sprite Flit through the night ... On a moony sheen. Tonight is the night When leaves make a sound Like a gnome in his home Under the ground, When spooks and trolls Creep out of holes
